Why Hardly Anyone In Israel Is Allergic To Peanuts
Following is a transcript of the video:
The U.S. has an epidemic on its hands. Peanut allergies. Between 1997 and 2008, the number of American children with a peanut allergy has tripled. And today, an estimated 1.8 million kids in the U.S. have one. That's larger than the entire population of Philadelphia. And the U.S. is not alone. The UK, Canada, and Australia have seen a similar rise in child peanut allergies. But, that's not the case for other countries like China, Thailand, Korea, the Philippines, and Israel.
So, what do these countries have that the U.S. doesn't? In Israel, there is a joke that the first three words out of every toddler's mouth are: abba, which means dad, ima, which means mom, and Bamba. Bamba is a popular peanuty snack. An estimated 90% of Israeli families buy it on a regular basis. And guess what? The peanut allergy rate in Israel is 1/10 the rate that it is in the UK. And in China and Thailand, many children eat peanut rice porridge for breakfast. And wouldn't you know it? Peanut allergies are relatively low there too.
But this could be a coincidence, right? Thank goodness we have the researchers at King's College London. They recruited 640 infants 4 to 10 months old who were at risk of developing a peanut allergy. Half of the kids in the study ate peanut snacks regularly. Whereas the other half were told to avoid peanuts entirely.
Then when the kids were 5 years old, they were brought in for one final experiment. All of them were instructed to eat some type of peanut protein. Of the kids who ate peanut snacks regularly since infancy, 3.2% had developed a peanut allergy. But the kids who avoided peanuts altogether, were much worse off. More than 17% of them had developed an allergy to a nut that they had never consumed. That means they were six times more likely to develop a peanut allergy than kids who regularly ate peanuts. Of course, this is just one study. But if you know how allergies work, it begins to make sense.
When someone with a peanut allergy encounters a peanut for the first time, their immune system kicks into overdrive. In this case, it sees the peanut as a threat. And it produces antibodies in anticipation for a future encounter. So the next time this person eats a peanut, antibodies activate an immune response which the person experiences as an allergic reaction.
Scientists aren't sure why some people experience reactions and others don't. But they think that early exposure can certainly help at-risk infants. And luckily, allergies aren't always set in stone. In a clinical trial earlier this year, doctors recruited children with peanut allergies. They gave them a small dose of peanut powder and slowly increased the dose over time. Sure enough, the children's immune systems became accustomed to the powder and nearly all of them were able to build up a tolerance to it.
This process, called desensitization, is a way of tricking your immune system. And it could, if used correctly and safely, become a way to treat children who have a mild reaction to peanuts. And although results have been promising so far, these treatments are not a cure. What's more, scientists suspect that genetics may also play a role in allergy development.
So, before you take matters into your own hands and start feeding your babies peanuts, talk to a doctor and make sure that you're in the clear. After all, like everything in life, peanuts should be enjoyed in moderation.

A lot of favorite dishes/desserts contain dairy. It’s also a huge popular myth that milk makes kids tall so everyone really makes their kids drink milk. Boba tea has dairy ffs and we drink that stuff since toddler age. Celiacs disease is pretty much unheard of. The only allergy I’ve heard of kiiiinda frequently is shellfish.

Like the video said, talk to a doctor first. I feel like they should've brought up the severe kinds of allergies in this video too. I only knew about the kind that causes anaphylactic shocks (causes choking and stuff, literally lethal like they said, needs immediate treatment) in regards to nut allergies, though luckily I'm not allergic to them myself, but that's probably something simple exposure couldn't fix even in babies. As a rule though, especially for less (or non-)lethal things like dog allergies, letting your little kids experience the allergens (particles causing the allergy) early on should reduce the risk.

As a teenager I started hating peanuts and nuts in general because my shit head stepdad became a body builder and all he'd eat and drink was peanut butter shit. Peanut butter cliff bars, peanut butter shakes, peanut butter cups, etc. And guess who got to clean his putrid peanut butter protein shake bottles at the end of the hot summer days? Me. So I recently started trying to eat more nuts for my health and suddenly my tongue and throat start burning and going numb, and the more I ate the worse it got. I guess avoiding nuts for almost a decade makes you allergic? I've started trying to eat peanut butter crackers, cookies, and things to get used to it again. But, the only nuts I can stand anymore are pistachio, almond, -human- , and hazel, and they don't make my throat numb. Still, I'd rather not be one of those dumb asses that die from breathing in peanut mist particles because somebody burped after eating a pbj.

Exposure does help prevent allergies, but some unlucky people still get them, like the 3.2% in the peanut exposed group in this study. My mother developed an allergy to most raw/unprocessed fruit at age 21 despite regularly eating fruit her whole life. Genetics can stink like that. Exposure for those at risk should definitely be used, though, because it could save many of those people a lot trouble, even if it won't help all of them.

@@arfym2581 the study was not a study done on a general child population - it was done on children AT RISK of developing a peanut allergy (babies/children with egg allergies or severe eczema are a lot more likely to develop a peanut allergy). I’m Israeli and I ate peanuts from the moment I could eat solid food . In fact , my favorite snack as a kid was bamba ! When I was five I went into anaphylactic shock because of peanuts , and seemingly overnight became deadly allergic to peanuts and still am to this day. At least in my case , I regularly ate peanuts and still became allergic . In Israel people are way less cleanly then in the states , people don’t have a problem eating things that fell on the floor / don’t always wash their hands before eating etc . I truly believe the allergies have more to do with the cleanliness rather than being exposed to peanuts ... at least in my case !

I think this explanation is way too simplistic to account for all the different ways the allergies can suddenly appear and just as mysteriously disappear some time later for the same foods, regardless of the introduction age. And this explanation for the US is particularly questionable, since peanuts are a part of the staple diet in either original nut form or processed as peanut butter. The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is one of American's favorite snacks and obviously the peanut processed into butter form makes it easy to consume even before the development of teeth. So the fact that this food is withheld from children now, seems to me like an effect (a precaution) than a cause. There are many countries where peanuts are not processed into butter or cooking oil and so the child would have no way of consuming it until becoming older and capable of chewing nuts and yet the problem of peanut allergy is not manifested on the scale as in United States.

Some people have said that the hygiene hypothesis can be the reason for increasing allergies, but that's usually applied to being exposed to a dirtier environment and not necessarily to food because if something is too clean, the body doesn't get accustomed to it. Some allergies, however seem to just be an error in the body and almost unavoidable. There could also be a genetic component as well.

I’m allergic to all tree nuts. I used to be mildly allergic to peanuts as a kid, and was rarely exposed to it because NYC schools (like other schools in US) have a strict “no peanut” policy in their cafeterias, for kids who have allergies. But as I got older I’d start to eat PB&J sandwiches etc, would experience mild itching but the symptoms would subside over the years until a few years ago when I just stopped having a reaction. So I’m not allergic to peanuts anymore! I theorized that if I tried that with the other nuts too in early childhood years (I was equally as allergic to tree nuts as I was to peanuts) I might’ve been able to diminish my reaction to them, too. (Might’ve)

I can 100% confirm this. So when me and my brother (we both have severe peanut allergies) were infants, the general idea was to prevent giving your kids allergens. Five years later, when my sister was born, the idea was to give them the allergens at a young age. It's been almost seven years and both me and my brother developed our allergies at around age three--so my sister is pretty much guaranteed safe. Kinda wish medicine had advanced a bit when I was born, but oh well :/

This seems strange to me because peanuts and other nuts have been around for thousands of years. I’m trying to figure out why would your body reject certain foods. I would understand if you dislike certain foods because you dislike the taste or other reasons, but not because of allergies or health issues. For example, When I was growing up, I was eating foods such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, peanut brittles, and other foods that have contained nuts. The people lived in B. C, A. D, seems to not had a problem in history dealing with food allergies and health until the late 1800s to early 1900s. It was slowly rising because of eating certain foods. For example, a farmer who lives in a country that eats bacon, pork chops, beef and fried chicken. Never had developed illness such as high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, gastrointestinal issues, allergies, and diabetes. It was non existence. These people lived to be close to 100 or over 100 years of age. Today’s time. It does not matter if you live in the country or the city. You cannot even eat a hamburger. Suddenly we developed all these health issues. Like mmm scratching my head. These livestock's, fruits, nuts and other foods have been around since the beginning of time. Suddenly. These foods become our enemy. Can you say deadly foods? It sounds like a horror! Your food supposed to be a blessing. Still scratching my head. I’m thinking it seems to be more manipulation is going on. Two, Downsize population, because everyone knows food is a must and can be a weakness. People will eat regardless, What better way to get to you? Food, water, and air. This gives you something to think about. The bible said my people will perish without a vision (Proverbs 29:18); We need to pray to our most high God to give us direction because the enemy is out to steal, kill, and destroy. Take these things to the Lord in prayer In Jesus’ name!

My nutrition textbook I had last year said otherwise. It claimed that allergies have a higher likelihood of development if a food if given to an infant before they are experienced enough with simpler foods to properly digest them. I can't remember the exact details about the order they recommended foods be introduced, but I do remember it saying each food that presents a food allergy risk should be introduced by the time the baby is 1 1/2 years old (as in the each food should be introduced gradually over a period of months extending to 16 months). Infants should start off with standard baby food for their first few months, then I think softer cereals can be introduced in addition to the baby food, then hard cereals, then select foods not presenting an allergy risks, and then introduced each risk-presenting foods incrementally by age 1 1/2. Would have to do my research again to make sure this is right, but I think I got the main idea for when I have a child of my own.
