Why Has Sony Never Made This Lens?

How has Sony not made this lens yet? E mount has so many great options for every focal length, but they trail the industry in wildlife photography lenses. Sigma and Tamron lenses don't sync with Sony IBIS so they are worthless for video. Sony literally only has the super expensive 400mm f2.8 and 600mm f4 professional lenses. Where are the consumer wildlife primes? We only have the 200-600mm. Give us an 800mm f8, lightest weight widlife lens ever made!

Switched from the Fuji X-H2 + Tamron 150-500 to the Nikon Z8 + 800 PF, and I absolutely love it. Such a brilliant setup, the stabilization is incredible, perfect for handheld video, and totally good for getting sharp shots at 1/100th of a second.

Thank you for teaching me appreciation for cinematography without toneh. I've watched recently a couple of seasons of The X-files and this Sean Penn' movie Into The Wild. I never noticed before how good is cinematography in The X-files without overusing bokeh and blur. long shots, long sequences tell a story in a couple of seconds. But this cheating by making an impressionistic stew of colorful lights - at some point you're asking yourself "what am I supposed to get out of this shot? what am I looking at?"

Olympus did the 300mm f4 and it was so good they had to divest the company. Still saving money for that lens, hopefully I can buy it whenever my kids get a job.

@@slam_down I think that’s the only sensible choice. Need to buy this before the system dies after all. In seriousness, I have tried many poor people alternatives, and at this point I’m convinced that wide aperture sharpness with autofocus on mft is only available thru debt.

Just bought the Sony 600, it is not that much heavier then the 200-600, but it's enough that I've switched to being mostly monopod based. The lack of TC with the sigma was the showstopper. And having to have the 2x on the 300mm to get to birding range meant that wasn't ever going to cut it. The nikon telephotos look great until you see a bad example of the toneh. Olympus/OMS should have put a permanent 1.25x TC on the sigma. I'll get a 1.4x next payday and then be happy with 800 5.6.

Nikon knows their customer base so they released the long lenses first. I just started shooting Nikon and joined their facebook groups. Its like 90% wildlife photographers.

Exactly why I sold my Fuji gear (plus horrible af tracking)… XF 150-600 f5.6-8 on APSC is a joke. Nikon 400 f4.5 + 180-600 f5.6-6.3 makes a great affordable kit. Even the 800 f6.3 is within reach… maybe sell some crack for a day instead of selling a kidney… or adapt one of the legacy 300, 400, 600 F mount primes for half the price. Zf subject detect / af tracking was excellent (maybe not on par with Canon or Sony but more than good enough) however the retro ergonomics aren’t suitable for daily use; my hand was cramped after a week of light daily use. Waiting on z6iii, hopefully soon…

But, but, but haven't you heard? Sony is coming out with a "wow" wildlife lens. The 24-70mm f/2.0. Now you can take video of bears rooting through the trash at night because you'll have a faster lens. Just be sure to have your track shoes on in case you need to run.

I am a Canon user, I used the 100-500 but as you say the range is not sufficient so I bought the 200-800 for my own use. The stabilization works fantastic, the range is adequate. The only downside is that you have to wind up from 200 to 800, but otherwise the shots are magic. I also mainly film wildlife. Of course, the body I use is Canon R5. And the prime 800mm lens will not be very convenient because it is difficult to initially find animals, especially small ones.

The new way to almost please the camera user with a long telephoto is to get them almost exactly what they want. Nice and long, maybe 800mm. Pretty sharp for the price. And f11. Have fun on a cloudy day trying to sharpen those eagle wings from a blurry mess into a less blurry mess. Just a thought to brighten your day.

What is weird is that the Sigma 150-600 contemporary for EF mount adapted to Sony A7IV is more steady than Sigma 100-400 made for emount. I don’t get it. It focuses faster, too.

Still pursuing the perfect camera I see. The endless quest. I'm from the future and my brain implanted camera system sucks. Even my implanted Eagle's Eye lens in my forehead has insufficient "pop". 😄

Have you had a chance to play with a Z9 or Z8 yet? The Af tracking on that/those is significantly better than other Nikon's. "Z6III" may be equal, but likely not. Honestly I think the Z80 (D500 replacement) is likely going to be a very tempting camera for you. It should be announced this year and it's hard to imagine it having anything less than 240p 1080 (4K 240p would not surprise me). Sh$t, you may want to see if you can get a cheap D500 just to play with. It's a beast and pretty affordable these days. Slap a PF 500mm on it and you will basically have your 800mm. Video specs are not amazing, and I know you like to pretend you only care about video.. but for photos you will have a blast.

Who said Nikon's AF isn't as good or better than Sony's or Canon's? We need to leave that myth behind, it is a myth by now, the Z8 and Z8 and ZF have great AF.

Sigma OIS alone in their recent lenses like the 60-600, 70-200 and 500mm seem to perform better than Sony's sync stabilization lenses.

@@cameraconspiracies the 150-500 tamron teached me not to trust reviews. Sure, it is sharp(ish) if you're shooting mating testcharts or something, but in the real world it just didn't hold up and I didn't understand why until I tried a 200600G and literally shot the same subjects (moving cars on a highway) alternating between a Tamron 150-500, 100-400GM and 200-600G. You could easily pick which photos were taken by the Tamron. It was just never sharp on anything that moves. It's too bad, because I didn't mind the 500mm reach and really liked how compact it was compared to the 200600G. I sold it and I'll be a loyal Sony buyer now. Also, that 500mm sigma... I just don't get it. Why would anyone pay more for a third-party 500mm prime when you can buy the 100400GM with a crop or 1.4TC or just use the 200600G.

Volume. The Sigma 500mm f/5.6 is darn expensive compared to the 200-600mm despite roughly similar speed. A long, slow prime will be quite expensive unless it's a weirdo a la Canon.

I originally ordered that Tamron 500mm lens until I saw how shaky it was so I canceled and got a good deal on a Fuji 600mm. Sure it may be out of focus but it’s steady handheld for static shots. I did learn not to attempt video after 2 hours of taking pictures of an Eagle. Like I handed the camera to Michael J Fox

4:51 The downside to prime is trying to find the subject quickly. You can't. Going from 200-600 makes finding the subject about 100 times faster.
