Demand for bicycles in Singapore hit a fever pitch during the pandemic, but sales have fallen by up to 70% in 2024, mirroring a global trend as some retailers resort to store closures and cutting prices to stay afloat.

Customer service is the key. As an avid cyclist for years, some singapore shops are arrogant and not helpful with bad customer service. If i buy my bike from you or pay for servicing, i expect that you treat me politely and exceed my expectations when it comes to servicing and mechanical skills. Too many shops dont treat their customers well and mechanics are shoddy with their work or leave the bikes dirty after servicing. Treat us like your friends and we will be loyal to your business.

Bicycle life span is quite long. Singapore is a small island, not too many places to cycle. Bicycles are not like underwear, how many can one buy and also have the space to keep? Places like Korea and Indonesia would see bike sales more stable. I see a lot of old unused bicyles in void decks everywhere.

Very true, I'm seeing less people acquiring LBS (Local bike shops) for service & maintenance. Alternatives out there, home mechanic for example, cause it feels more trusted, but when original parts are needed for the bike then they would go back to a LBS.

@Danderman888

I can’t speak for others, but I have my reasons for not cycling my bicycle these days. True, there are more cycling infrastructures being intentionally developed by the government these days. But, not all of the infrastructure is the same all over. I used to live down on the East Coast for more than 60 years. I saw cycling infrastructure from a non-existent one to the great East Coast Parkway PCN, a boon to the recreational cycling fraternity. But I didn’t appreciate the more practical side of cycling until I moved up north to the Sembawang-Woodlands area. Here, I realised that the number of bicycles rivalled that of motor vehicles, plainly because cycling was more a necessity than recreational. As a result, I noticed the government accelerating cycling infrastructure development in this and other high density populated areas, which naturally would include most HDB districts, especially also because they were planned with the governments intentions of integrating residential and commercial-industrial developments together to facilitate more convenience, less commuting long distance, hence conserving on energy and motor vehicle congestions, among other prudent reasons. Lately though, I have noticed that more cycling infrastructures have also started coming up in the more affluent East Coast area, most obviously to facilitate cyclist in pockets of higher density private residential areas to get to the recreational East Coast PCN. This, however, made the sub-optimal condition of cycling infrastructure in the HDB estates appear more obvious. Some examples are the badly planned routes that require cyclists to slow down excessively or even dismount to get from one section to another. This, I noticed discouraged cyclists from using these tracks, opting to return to the roads for motor-vehicles, which I notice are even wider than in areas of less densely populated areas where there are naturally more car owners due to economic reasons. To add fuel to discouragement of cycling in these parts, now the government is planning on restricting cycling as a result of the misuse of motorised conveyances like PMDs on cycling and pedestrian paths, which cyclists in these areas need to use as a result of inadequate cycling facilities in places where they are really more needed for practical reasons. Granted, infrastructure developments are being created to improve conditions for cycling, like the future North South Corridor, which will take longer distant commute on bicycles to a new level. But for now, I would rather drive my car while I can still afford it rather than brave the roads and even the overcrowded PCNs. The government’s intentions of creating a less motor vehicle reliant society and more healthy cycling one is a really good one. Even bringing intentions to reality makes me proud I am a Singaporean. But for now, I am afraid it is still falling far short of the mark, especially in places where it is needed, and not just nice to have.
@SingaporeUntold
@SingaporeUntold 2 дня назад
The PCN are not even cycling paths. Big speed differences between the users. I would love if there were cycling highways to get people from one place to the next. Like take out a lane that could be used by pmd, cyclists etc Fat chance! Haha For example the the Green corridor is sort of a cycling highway that can get you from one area to the next faster. I asked before if they could finish off so it’s not half cycling and half mountain bike path. Npark refuse. Anyway it’s all politics. Fragmented PCN so that the government can say hey we have so and so amount of cycling network when it’s just a wide sidewalk and that it’s so fragmented. I think if you could wipe a clean slate and redo the network, i think building a cycling network under MRT paths would be the best solution.

There are 2 group of cyclist: 1) the rich that cycle for fun, don't mind few $1k of bike, live near long green cycling path....... 2) in town, some because of leg problem (cycling the weight on bike and not onto legs). 1) .......new rules that traffic light had to push.....do anyone even count how many traffic light to cross in singapore even for a short distance? Do anyone else experience getting on and off a bike is not that easy, especially for those with leg problem?
@brotherhu51hu68
@brotherhu51hu68 9 дней назад
2) in Town if having leg problem, usually going out means needed to settle something, and usually is where bicycle is forbidden to ride, like shops with in blocks etc. you're only allow outter ring to ride. Most of the times, more than half of the travel ( actually longer compare to walking, due to the allowed route on bike, therefore you need to go around further distance just to push the bike to where you're going, or where to lock your bike and walk.) still have to walk.
@brotherhu51hu68
@brotherhu51hu68 9 дней назад
3) cycle path probably are build for fun and those young people, there're hills and valleys all over, and mostly away from "business"(shops, collection points, ntuc etc), usually greenery far from others. Try having leg problem cycling in such path. 🤦🏼 Therefore I agree Singapore is best for rich and heathier people.
@brotherhu51hu68
@brotherhu51hu68 9 дней назад
4). In town you know how narrow the allowed cycling path(/shared-pedestrain) is? Unless you're so controllable that the bike was travel very straight (note that most of the concrete are NOT perfect,if anyone had even cycle, you know needed to turn left and right most of the time to keeps your balance), everytime there's in coming cyclist (especially delivery bike with big food box behind), it's a adrenaline rush, really feel wear out for old people.
