Wilhelm Steinitz was the first official World Chess Champion to grace the chess world. He is known for inventing 27 openings or variations and credited with developing the art of positional play.
When needed, he was a fierce attacker, even earning the nickname The Austrian Morphy, after the legendary chess player Paul Morphy who was known for stupendous attacks.
Today, we take a look at Steinitz-Pilhal, 1860. A relatively unknown gem of his before he became World Champion.
