Whichever field today's high school student want to pursue, computer science and computational thinking will be a critical part of their future success. This talk will discuss why is it important for high school students everywhere to take a computer science class. Kevin has an undergrad in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley and a graduate degree in Education from Harvard University.  He built and taught a CS program for three years at a San Francisco Bay Area high school. He was a member of the MIT Teacher Education Program‘s StarLogo programming language team, a Teaching Fellow for Harvard CS 1, and held engineering fellow positions at Lockheed Martin and Toyota.  Kevin was a software engineer in the Microsoft Office 365 group when he founded TEALS in 2009.  He now runs TEALS full time generously supported by Microsoft Philanthropies.  Kevin spends what little of his free time trying to not be outsmarted by his dog while watching British panel quiz shows. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I wish High Schools use to be the way they were when they actually had practical classes.

I'm not sure how applicable my advice is because I went to a high school that's ranked 4th in the country but in my school, we had a multitude of paths we could take through classes in both the natural and social sciences like nanotech, marinebiology, intro to anthropology, differential equations, ap research stats, and many more so just take classes that are centered around the field of comp sci. Every class that is not mandatory ought to be II intro to tech design or other classes like that. Also, take place in as many programming contests as you can. You don't even need to win, just the sight of all those competitions you took part in will entice MIT. Make sure to focus on extra curricular like that more than trying to have a 5.0 gpa, MIT and other universities like MIT stop caring about gpa once it reaches a certain level. You want to stand out in your one field, no need to dabble in others unless you're really interested.

If you can add, subtract, multiply and divide then you should be fine.

@@ThinkFree3 do you use a calculator in computer science ?I'm asking because I'm taking computer science and repair at my hs but I had no idea it involved so much math.

No need to learn all of those other useless mathematics equations... the main factor that you should be learning in the branch of math is algorithms.

Or in other words, love sitting at a computer for hours problem solving, which some do, but that's really what it is

The only problem I see in High School students studying Computer Science is that they just can't. By my understanding Computer Science is a Master degree and there fore it requires a bachelor which you only get after studying at university. wille after highschool you only have a diploma

Who says you need a masters degree to study a topic..?

So I guess Literature and Math should also be off the table because those require degrees as well.
