Well, I hope you missed me. - Because we've got a lot to see! For those of you who didn't see my previous posts in the past weeks across numerous social media, I decided to take a break after the cycle and filming due to being at the brink of a mental and physical breakdown. (I mean, look at all the stuff we did in the bloody trailer in the last two minutes of this video!). As amazing as Journey Across Japan has been, 45 days on the road left me in a state of ruin. And after resting in January properly for the first time since August, I now feel fully recharged. With at least a dozen episodes to go, I'm in the right frame of mind to do the series justice, with the videos being posted throughout February! Thanks for your patience folks and enjoy the video!
Missed you so much! Loved watching your journey, and can’t wait to see the rest of it. So glad you were able to prioritise your health, and happy to hear that you’re on the mend. Congratulations on completing the cycle - that in and of itself is an incredible achievement, and I really do hope that you’re truly proud of what you’ve achieved.
"some even say Himeji castle looks like a heron taking flight, which is bollocks... because its a castle" is the kind of deep and meaningful cultural insight I come here to see. Fantastic video!
@@Emppu_T. Me too. I literally turned on the subtitles to make sure. What the hell is a "heron"? Okay, it looks like its German name is "Reiher". I've heard of that bird species before, but "reihern" is a way to say "throwing up".
"Ryotaro's face aside, this is one of the nicest views i've had on the trip so far in the morning." Its not Chris if he doesnt throw shade at Ryotaro in every video HAHAHHAH
6:57 Risottoro breaking one of the rules of "dont do this in japan"! Taking a business card and immediately putting it in his pocket without carefully examining it first! How rude! I know my japanese do' s and don'ts by now, thanks to abroad in japan
Rafael White they are already friends so it’s less of an issue. Ryotaro also apologies for not having his business cards, which implies that he doesn’t have his card holder. Good spot though!
@@euanmorse my thoughts exactly! The guy handing him the card looked away almost immediately lmao. That and the fact that they're already friends took away some of the need for such strict tradition to be enforced ✌️
The Journey Across Japan series is the best travel documentary series I have seen, up there with Anthony Bourdain. I return to this again and again when life is difficult. It's a remarkable achievement where facts about culture, cuisine, geography is mixed with humor and really well written commentary. A small masterpiece.
I can't express how much I enjoy this channel, honestly the highlight of my day. Chris with his friends makes me feel like I'm right there shit talking with them
i'm just in awe of how great chris's cinematography and shots are. that final sequence especially just really highlighted the incredible quality he brings with each of his videos. thank you chris for all the hard work you put into your channel, it makes every video such a delight to watch!
When the video started I instantly rubbed my hands together and said "Inspiration" out loud :'D You really do inspire me though to become a better RU-vidr and person in general! Thanks dude! Looking fitter each day btw!
Nice! A new video! I admit that the first time I clicked on one of your videos it was because I read your title as A Broad in Japan. I was initially very disappointed. However our communal distain for the artist Pitbull and your love of beef and biscuits won me over and now am looking forward to more videos after your much needed rest.
@@markwong7915 ah, forgive me. A "broad" is also a north American informal term for a woman. So, I read it as a woman in Japan, and I got Chris Broad. While he is a very fun and entertaining individual, he is not in fact a woman in Japan.
If Himeji Castle was a secret Ninja training base of course they’re not going to admit that they are... /also... are you sure your bike just “broke” or is this a little payback by Sharla for the rollercoaster?
Yeah and the front only has 1 small gear. Mine just broke the rear derailleur as well while i was out in the street its annoying. You "could" technically still switch the gear by hand, but you'd have to stop turn the bike upside down and do it with your hands, keep the tension set straight and off you go. Now who they gave it to that couldn't fix it? that's the problem. In Tokyo you can't walk a block without seeing either a bicycle shop or bicycle repair shop, i seriously doubt they didn't see one on this trip. In my biased opinion Japan has the highest bicycle per capita population on earth (and Tokyo the most rail per capita as well). Also i want to mention, yeah its true the off road tires need a bit more effort, but like he correctly said in the first episode, they tend to puncture less. Maybe Japan has cleaner streets but over here with the asphalt tires the tires would go flat almost every day. Also that accident when he hit the pole, i have suffered those as well, i know the feel :-) Good cycling!
"Hey, can you fix my bike?" "Sure!" *cuts gear wire" " You won't have any problem with changing gears now!" I like how they decided to just irreparably break the bike and took the money though instead of telling them that they couldn't fix it and giving them a chance to find a specialist or just save themselves the money 😂
I was in Japan when this series started & I was really excited to watch it everyday but then I would check and there weren't videos. At first I thought I was missing them somehow but when it came to light what was happening, I was more than happy to wait. Watching these videos now, I am more excited than I was at the beginning to see the trip. クリス君はありがとうございました
You gotta love a friend like mr. Ryotaro that has so much patience with a friend like you. Kudos to him! Now as soon as possible you throw him a barbeque. With a lot of beer...
OMG!!! When I first clicked on this vid I was hoping you would mention You Only Live Twice!!! It’s also my fav bond film and I really want to visit Himeji.
7:24 Ah, so confectionery is the Japanese secret to immortality. It is fortuitous that I watched this video, since it holds such a glorious nugget of wisdom that shall surely do me well during my six months in Japan.
It went great, I will have a couple more intrrviews and I believe they'll give me a couple tasks I'll have to do so they can see how good of a programmer I am.
This series really is incredibly good. I'm just blown away at your journey over the years from amateur RU-vidr to actual goddamn filmmaker. Thank you for all your hard work, it really shows!
Thanks a lot for this series. My wife and I were supposed to travel to Japan this year, and of course this pandemic changed all that. We had a couple of great experiences doing bike trips in different places of the US, and watching you do the same in Japan is such a perfect combination of the familiar and the new... It has been a way to get a taste of what it would have been like, and a great motivator to go next year.
Im also cunfused.....but this has me super confused..... and i dont do super confused....that has me über confused....look at that, i have even crossed the language barrier......thats even more confusing....i am well on my way on becoming a true confuscian.....just not in the correct sort a way.....more like just plain confusion.....(pun intended)
The evolution of your channel is absolutely inspiring. You should be very proud of what you're doing now compared to what you were doing just a couple of years ago. Excellent stuff!
I love seeing structures that embody the ancient world. Ginormous European castles from the Middle ages to Japanese castles from the waring states period. So much beauty.
IDK why you're apologizing. You still upload more frequently than Jun with the same quality... Don't tell him I said that... But I'm still waiting for him to cook in his new kitchen with his insanely well behaved cats.
I seriously thought you are going to leave this series behind, it made me fall in love with my heritage all over again, as a son of a japanese immigrant i was constantly taught to assimilate well with the society, but deep down i wanted to know what it is like to be in Japan and travel across the country and your videos have helped reinvigorate my curiosity, thank you. Mental health is important i'm glad you took your time to have proper rest before continuing on uploading the series.
I've been watching Abroad in Japan since the very early days and the editing and video quality just keeps getting better and better. The whole journey across Japan series here and the spin offs from Tokyo Creative and Sharla etc have become one of my fav series on youtube.
Chris I'm so glad you didn't rush this one out. Your content is just plainly really good. It's way better than a lot of the documentaries on Netflix and I'm astonished that RU-vid is the only media platform with you on it. I actually caught myself being really excited that the video was more than 20 minutes long this time. This is easily my favourite series of videos on RU-vid.
I went to Himeji Castle 2 days after it reopened fully back in 2015 during the Sakura season and the crowds were heaving!!! Very beautiful though. And a lot of cats as well!
Instructor: We are ninja, working from the shadows, stealth is our creed, come on students show them! Students: "RAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!: Instructor: ... they're adopted.
So glad to have you back! This is my favorite series on RU-vid right now and I honestly missed you everyday. Hope you're feeling better and you're taking good care of yourself!
I always feel super motivated after watching you’re videos. You’ve done so well for yourself. The quality of your content is insaaaaane and you are so entertaining and relatable.
I lived in Kobe for 2 years. Perfect location. I spent tons on time in Kyoto (1 hour away). I actually had the opportunity to tour and go to the top of the Akashi Kaikyo bridge (amazing experience). Visited the Himeji castle many times. I miss Japan and might return.
