Werner von Braun wanted to explore space. He was the most well known rocket expert. When the Nazis came to power, they put him to work for them building a usable rocket. He was brought here after the war and went to work for the US Military and NACA. NACA became NASA and he headed up every thing from Vanguard to the Apollo Project. He was a National Hero during the late 1950s to the 1970s. I am not old enough to remember Vanguard and the Chimpanzees launches. I remember the Alan Shepard and John Glenn's flights. If we were home everyone watched the launches. The Astronauts and Von Braun were constantly talked about, by kids, teachers and other adults. It was a wonderful era seeing the first steps into space. Even kids felt National pride

Are you guys allowed to use them defensively in a unexpected emergacy like a potential invasion? I know alot of countries are forbidden from using enemy tech even if it's so simple it can't be abused by another enemy, but I don't know if that applied to ww2 shelters or even ww2 stuff in general

I know iv been wishing we can build underground cities with greenhouses above them and farms built around them here in alaska with how things with our Russian neighbors keep escalating, but their neither cheap or easy to establish. The big problem is anything we build has too be sort of vacuum sealed into the soil so nothing falls away overtime, and anything sturdy enough to protect us from airstrikes will cause the ground itself too collapse if we don't do it slowly over a few decades

@Matthew Baker Yup and one of my ancestors was that state's last governor general....Fun fact, New Jersey is known as the garden state and if you know Jersey, you'll know it's famous for it's flower show but yup, it did make it slightly cringey. They put so much effort into it too.

the french spelling is "guernesey", and as someone who lives here, we used to be a french-speaking island. its not uncommon to look up "channel islands" and find "guernesey"

I believe that's the correct term (anglo-Norman right; kinda a mix of French and old Norse since they're the last hold out for the old dukes of Normandy) I have no doubt it is spelled like that; it's more the pronounciation I'm thinking of and since, being in Southampton, I've never heard Matt Le Tissier (I'm sure you know who he is, Vale rec old boy, world class soccer player) pronounce it as "guern-es-ey" just gurnsey.

I am also from the island and i have found this is one of the biggest channels to mention guernsey and the channel about ww2. Instead of skipping over it and focusing on Jersey on most of the documentorys on youtube about the channel

The 30.5cm gun barrels were from a Russian WW1 battleship. Germany basically had wanted 38cm guns, but none were available, thus instead those four Russian WW1 barrels that Germany had captured in Norway were used.
