Thanks everyone for trying so hard to prove the title of this video wrong! A few additional thoughts: to be clear I definitely don’t think fame should be pursued as a goal in and of itself, it may be a by-product of success, and that’s okay, especially if that success comes from doing something you’re truly passionate about. I don’t think I’d enjoy being famous to the point of being recognized everywhere I go and am under no illusion that fame (or even success) is the key to happiness. But I do think it’s healthy to aim for success in whatever you do, even if it’s a hard road or you never truly get there. Obviously making art for the sake of art is a very wise mindset to have, even if you still daydream about hitting it big. Lastly, I think this video sort of implies that I am frustrated by a lack of success on RU-vid or desperate to finally get my talent recognized. That’s not true, I’ve been uploading to this channel for a few years but it was only about a year ago I started to make content that was more focused and polished, and even in the last year haven’t had time to upload as consistently as I’d like to. Hope to see you back here on the next one!

As someone who's been on this platform for a decade, one of the best pieces of advice I can give for new RU-vidrs is to NOT go in with astronomically high expectations. You should start making videos because you want to, and then if you gather an audience with that, awesome! But if not, you should still enjoy the act of creation and not regret the work you've put in to all the videos.

As an old time viewer of you I have to disagree. The key things to success is what kind of success you want and consistency. This guy isn't very consistent and his videos don't cover topics that can gain you views. Regardless his videos have a lot of quality and he is a good narrator. If he was more consistent then he will have a bigger channel. This is my first channel I've put effort into. It takes me a lot of time to make videos and I still go to school. The main thing for me is to figure out what will get you views within the range of what you are able to create and what you want. I want to this kind of content because I know how to do it, and it teaches me skills that's ill use in university. But basically I'm just saying it isn't all luck. Take Mr beast for example, I know his content isn't the recreatable type per se but he has consistently doubled his subscriber count over the past years. If he was just posting what he was posting like 3 years ago then that would be impossible.

I used to be really resentful about "not making it as a creative" (on RU-vid or otherwise) but then I started thinking of it the other way around: - to make as much as money as I make with my 37.5h/w day job as a RU-vid musician I'd need AT LEAST 500k subs - to accrue and maintain this level of success I would need to invest way more than 37.5h/week in non-creative chores (marketing, accounting, brand management, etc.) - in all actuality even if I did manage 500k subs at the end of the day I'd have no job security, no 401k, no insurance... meaning in all actuality I'd need more like close to a million subs to make up the difference which means I would spend even MORE of my time caught in non-creative chores - I spend the remaining 130.5h/w (minus sleep and other relaxation) working on creative outlets like producing RU-vid videos and playing live gigs who generate 100% chore-free income We can thusly conclude that I make more money of being creative on my own time while being employed full-time elsewhere than I would being a full-time creator dealing with all the associated hassles. I have therefore not given up on my dreams or pissed my life away and I can sleep soundly.

At a certain point "love of the craft" is a necessary mindset, because dear god why the hell else would I do this. I don't think it's a matter of humility or appealing to some virtue, I genuinely think that if I couldn't find some way to enjoy this for its own sake I'd have a meltdown. Telling someone just starting out "you've got to do it because you love it" is tough because they're going to hear "wanting money is bad" which isn't quite it. It's more like "Hey, stay playful, keep learning, don't put a lot of pressure on yourself. You are under no obligation to be miserable because the numbers aren't going up fast enough."

I love that your wife teaches music! I´m a musician as well. On RU-vid. And thats already when things start to get weird. You do not just have to deal with that one "Music" tag that Eric Clapton as welll as Slipknot fans use both, because it literally is the only tag and RU-vid does not make a difference. You also have to deal with AI competitors that 100% only post copy & paste videos they download from Tiktok. By that they gain like 9 Million views while your Studio Track is cut from the feed at 2000~, because the Clapton Fans did not like your Slipknot Riff. I could continue now, but I think it explains where I´m going to.

Don't forget that being a RU-vidr is like running your own business. You have to give people the content they want or need in their lives. Just like businessman should offer product/service that people need. And when the growth becomes real, you can consider hiring people to help you run your channel more efficiently. The most difficult part is starting and growing of course, but consistency and hard work (with a little bit of Famester) is key to success and pays off very fast.

3:04 checking in 👋 I spent about 8 years wondering why my best efforts at uploading my music on RU-vid resulted in what felt like a collective shrug. I was used to the idea of putting in as much effort as possible and not really seeing what you'd call "success". As an example of how I felt: 2 weeks after Skyrim came out, I uploaded a video of me playing the theme on piano. It didn't get much attention. Someone else uploaded his piano video of the same thing and got hundreds of thousands of views. Why was someone else able to make the same thing as me and it did great, yet my version was comparatively ignored? It didn't make sense and it felt like maybe I was just doomed to failure "just because". After this grind, why would I expect that uploading piano visualiser videos, *lower effort content*, would work? My best friend and I set out to make a library of piano sheet music, publishing a video every day (because Pewdiepie uploaded every day). We thought that if it was still a failure after 3 years, we'd abandon the project. 9 months in: 100,000 subscribers. WHAT I thought everything I worked on would fail, just like my 8 years of trying to get somewhere and experiencing mostly frustration, like that Skyrim video. So in the most literal sense, I never imagined this level of success. It was outside the realm of possibility in my mind. So was getting 1 million views on a single video. It felt like only people with some magic BS blessing got that, because my best efforts to make the highest-quality videos I could didn't work. I'm sure you can sense my deep frustration from that experience. So yeah. I never imagined this level of success. I'm still kinda incredulous. I just make piano stuff and yet here we are??!!??!????????? Because I'm making stuff for other people primarily, not for my own enjoyment, it's a little bit like when you mentioned your graphic design work (but without dealing with clients). Admittedly this channel is not so much about "the love of the craft", which I save for other personal projects where I don't expect to have the same level of broad appeal. I noticed you said "algorithm" a lot in this video, and it felt like you were talking about some nebulous thing. But it's the same thing that serves your home page videos personally, and It continually updates according to what you watch. You can essentially replace the word "algorithm" with "audience" and it becomes a lot more useful. If you can make something good for an audience, more viewers will be invited to watch the video. Clearly that's happening with this one, and clearly you've hit the mark. No reason your channel can't "make it". Anyway, I'll stop writing this novel there. If I see you walking down the street, Corey, I'll say hi. I'm sure you're in Australia on a regular basis, so very high likelihood 👍
@coreyjcampbell
@coreyjcampbell 8 месяцев назад
Yo thanks for sharing your perspective! Your channel is super cool for that genre. I love piano music and someday still want to put more effort into that instrument. A lot of people have pointed out that it’s better to think of the algorithm as an audience than some mysterious machine and I totally agree. But I do think there is a way that algorithm is just shorthand for “how we consume content online” it may in large part be driven by human nature and psychology but there is still an element of influence from how the programming interacts with that. Would be a good topic to explore in a future video. And yeah I think your channels is a great example of something that offers a ton of value to people even though each upload isn’t a super creative endeavor or work of passion for you. I understand why you were caught off guard by the success but it definitely proves that consistency and quality pays off!

How about even 100 people in your home? I finally reached 100K and now I'm already working on the next milestone XD Great video! I like how you made the distinction between famous and successful because there are many channels under 100K subscribers that earn a living because of their niche and sales funnel. Considering that I've been making videos for around 8 years now... it doesn't ever feel like I'll reach that milestone... which unmotivates me and doesn't really make me wanna create anymore...and once I even make a video for anything now...I feel like I take too long and it becomes irrelevant to the public...I'd still like to have a little success at some point....but....nowadays...I'm not even sure if it's worth it since everyone's supposedly leaving the platform...

You know, RU-vid has been something that I have been wanting to do for a long time. And it wasn’t until about two years ago when I was ready for that. As far as I know, as much as it’s great for getting the glory of being famous. It has and WILL have it’s consequences. And that means getting criticized by others who would want to knock you down. For me personally it would be nice to have some more recognition as well as having some pocket change from that. But I don’t ever see myself becoming a massive name on RU-vid, sometimes I don’t think it’s really worth it. However that doesn’t mean that I don’t like the idea of entertaining everyone with my content. Sometimes being someone’s best 15 minutes/seconds to someone’s day is absolutely enough for me. ☺️

A friend who is a realtor once told me “Every morning when you wake up as a realtor you’re unemployed!” You could really say the same thing as a RU-vidr - each video you upload is a new “job application” which may or may not succeed. In some ways this simplifies the focus to your next video, nothing more, nothing less!!!

This was very relateable, it felt like I was talking eye to eye with a person that faces the same problem. I loved it. All we can do is just create, there is a reason why big channels don't have the biggest advice when you ask them directly.

We get recognized every couple months in our area. It's surreal. One was a guy in his truck holding up traffic at the supermarket. Another was a guy visiting family from out of town at Costco. Several more inside our local Publix, just blocks from our house. We take photos and share them on our community tab :)

I relate to this so much, I love art and creating, got into game development, still am dabbling in it. Post it on RU-vid, got some traction, but I just want to do more. And to be honest game development is ridiculously expensive, especially when you're living off of retails minimum wage. I recently bought a nice camera in hopes to make some neat films and film my face that isn't less than 10 pixels wide. Like you said all we can do is keep creating. Keep up the work and keep the hopes high!

Not that it happens a lot, but I remember my first time being spotted in public. I was with my family and the kid came at me with a lot of enthusiasm, but it caught me off guard. Like, if I saw my favorite RU-vidr, I would be doing the exact same thing, but it never really crossed my mind that it would happen to me. I've been working this BBQ content channel for the last 4 years and I have grown over 80,000 subscribers and can say I enjoy doing this RU-vid thing full time, but you definitely need brand deals and partnerships to go along with it. Find your niche, be yourself, and your channel will grow, just got to keep grinding and be patient. Best of luck Corey! I subscribed!

G’day Corey. I must say that I uploaded a song or two on my piano on Facebook for a few old friends and thought that I’d “store” it on RU-vid!!! I thought it was just in a kind of storage place as I gathered it was set to private unless I said it could be shared. Hence to say I inadvertently ended up with a channel on RU-vid lol 🎶✌️I didn’t want to have a channel, it is challenging and takes discipline to practice, arrange and learn songs on the piano at a fast rate for me. I love 💕 the piano and playing, so I’m going to keep playing and hope others enjoy the interpretations too. But definitely not and wasn’t here to make money haha. 380 subs is 380 more than I imagined as I didn’t realise I even had a channel at first. Thanks for your videos 😘

One of the biggest secrets I believe I have discovered is to not be bland and to instead be engaging. Have your videos, and your brand, vibrant and pop out! (Something I myself am still working on :D ) Maybe you just need a burst of energy here or there to really grab some attention/views :) At 35 years young, please keep making videos. Don't lose heart! (Edit) Your videos are also great btw. I could only ever think of suggesting to perhaps follow in the footsteps of the other greatest RU-vidr's down to the tee to see where there transitions take place, what kind of music they use, etc... Then, put your own spin on it! Your personality will surely be enough to captivate your audience through your genuine experiences and insights 💪 Here's to collabing sometime if you would like to! 🔥

I've been thinking about starting a channel. But I'm *terrified* of "fame" ! 0:47 You've just described my nightmare scenario here! I DO NOT want random *strangers* recognizing me in real life!!! I'd like to document my extensive collections and the happy lives of my cats. But I DO NOT want "fame". Unfortunately, I think my content requires an on camera presence. Hence, I'm still "thinking about" starting a YT channel.

I used to run a software developer group and give talks from time to time. Once I was in the mall having lunch and someone recognised me. The guy started asking me questions while I just wanted to finish my lunch. So, without being famous I already experienced part of the problem.

You're not famous just yet. The part about finding your niche is something I can resonate with. And personally, I'm currently at a point where I'm not sure where I even want to continue myself. But maybe I shouldn't even worry about such things? Just continue with ideas on videos I have, especially the ones I enjoy to create. Consistency and improving over months and years. Maybe this is simply the key to success? But I suppose I'll see it eventually haha. Who knows. I enjoyed the video, thank you for that!

I watched the video for about a minute before realizing how small the channel was, the quality of the setup is great but some signifiers are lacking to make it to the greater step. Get your face cam plan a bit further so we can appreciate your hand gestures that will make your talks more persuasive, make a side plan where you can get in very close up when you go to say the info you want people to remember the most, don't be afraid to use more B-roll and also to make the B-roll yourself even if it takes significant effort, it will be acknowledged and worth it. As well as zoom and dezoom to emphasize the emotions. The differences in adding all these kinds of details are what make the difference because ultimately anyone would watch anything if it's good enough. : ) get to those 0.2% by being a 0.2% most optimized

7:12 OH MY GOD I thought I was the only human being on the planet that thinks this way LMAO, Me personally being a video editor for other youtubers really made me question myself "why am I using my energy for others when I could be using it on my own content?" Like what you said, it doesn't feel like art. making stuff for other people and our own channels being our creative escape. Thanks to my artistic ego (I guess you could say that) turned down a lot of potential clients in attempt to buy myself time for me to work on my own content. Despite the fact that I make absolutely ZERO financial benefit on my own content, it still drives hope that it would help lead me to doing better on this site LOL.

Love the video and the channel. We are somewhat similar as RU-vidrs. We both make perfectly good videos (at least I think I do and I am sure you do) but we've only had the odd video which has had a tickle at success. My best guess is that we have a very similar problem: thumbnails and titles. This video has an excellent title and an excellent thumbnail. It has therefore been a relative success. If they ain't clicking then they ain't watching. The problem for me is that I have no idea how to improve my thumbnails. I do what I think will work and I am wrong about 99% of the time. Just a thought from one RU-vidr who will never be famous to another. Have a great week

RU-vid is so weird, it feels like nowadays people need to plase the algorithm with fast paced videos and strong hooks, but at the same time I think there's an older audience that likes this type of content, a more laid-back aproach to content, kind of like youtube was 10+ years ago. Anyways, I like you, keep up the good work!

Main thing that motivates me to move forward is that even a few people would like what i make, then it is success for me. Because that means that someone's life for a moment became better, in a way happier. But yeah, creative people have that storong feeling to make something valuable through their art. And as i understand, pursuit for a numbers kills creativeness and RU-vid can become just another boring job. So be careful not to fool yourself new RU-vidrs. To be famous is of course great idea, bit i think main reason to be Happy is make other people happier through art.
