Why I (Almost Completely) Stopped Shopping | Ingrid Nilsen

2019 will mark 10 years on RU-vid for me and over those years, I’ve made A LOT of videos. Specifically, A LOT of hauls/shopping related videos. 2019 will also be the year I turn 30, something I view as a pretty significant personal milestone. As I’ve reflected on the past, I’ve been able to see how old habits no longer serve me and I’ve become more curious about the habits that do. This year, I decided to almost completely stop shopping. The older I get, the more I care about how my actions affect other people, the world and my own personal well-being. The fashion industry is wasteful (that’s no secret) and it also has a complex consumerist power over us that keeps us wanting more. I love beautiful things but I don’t want my life to be ruled by them. I want the things that I own to be reflections of myself, not the other way around. I want to present and express myself in a way that makes me feel like me without obsession or pressure. I want to dedicate my headspace to the work and people I care about. If you’re reading this, you are part of that group. I never, ever imagined that I would have a career that allows me to even think about these things, let alone pursue them and I know it’s a profound privilege. I started making videos because watching RU-vid helped me survive some of the most painful years of my life. I keep making videos because the healing I’ve found is meant to be shared.❤️

This is something I've been giving a lot of thought towards and definitely have plans for a part two (or more). Let me know if you'd like to see something focusing on privilege as it relates to minimalism, how to cultivate a healthy relationship with owning things, or how to use the time and energy that had previously been occupied by shopping in more productive ways. These are all topics I'm talking about in my personal life and would love to open up and share with you all. Thank you for sharing books, other channels and resources for myself and everyone else to check out!

Ingrid, I love that you did a video on this as it's something that I've been thinking about lately as well. I would love to see a part 2 and was also curious how you manage this when it comes to gift giving. I tend to spend a lot in this area, but it makes me really happy to go shopping and pick out things that I think someone else will like. How do you manage gift-giving with a minimalist shopping lifestyle?

@@jennjenn5678 I would like to give my thoughts... You can still give gifts. Gifts are also about the thought and love you put in it, not just the thing. Certainly when the people receiving them enjoy your gifts. If you would like to give different things, give experiences! That way you don't 'waste' things and get great memories!

I started noticing how much food my family was wasting. We wouldn’t save leftovers, we had food sitting in the pantry forever untouched, and produce going bad before in the fridge. I committed to a 30 day no grocery challenge where I bought no groceries other than basic perishables (bread, milk, fresh fruits/veggies, and some routine toddler snacks) it was so hard the first week to break the habit but by the end I was so glad I did it because it gave me my passion for cooking back and helped me break my “buy whatever I want” mentality

we need to revert back to spending money on reliable, resourceful and humane products that will last years. Like how it used to be. A $120 dress to last 15 years, for example, rather than a $20 one to last just 1. It will encourage retailers to make better, higher quality products that don't abuse people or nature. We need to start calling out those 'haul' youtubers that spend $500 at H&M or Fashion Nova. Start acknowledging that the only reason youtubers are recommending us to buy products is so that THEY get paid, not because they care about promoting good brands.

Totally agree, one of the minimalists that I watch suggested only buying clothes that you will wear at least 30 times, so now when I go shopping I always gave that thought in the back if my mind. I can't tell you how many times I have decided against purchases of fast fashion as u know they won't last 10 washes let alone 30! It has also meant I am buying fewer higher quality items

What about weight changes and style? Shouldn't those be factors? Style from 15 years ago looks very outdated today back then everything had an elastic right under the bust and a flare and not that is very unflattering so yeah these just immediately popped into my head there are so many other changes 15 yrs is a very long time
@tipsycat27
@tipsycat27 5 лет назад
@@ninjaturtles12121 style and trends shouldn't be a major factor in your life. Sure, a little, like one statement piece a year, but not like buying loads of asos or cheap clothing all year. It's just common sense to know where your personal limits are, but to still be aware of the environment and human welfare. Weight loss/gain shouldn't be a major factor either unless pregnancy is a thing. Most people stay within a dress size or so for most of the time unless they have unhealthy diets.
@ninjaturtles12121
@ninjaturtles12121 5 лет назад
@@tipsycat27 I constantly fluctuate in size year in and out based on a medical condition and medication I'm taking so it's definitely impossible for the average person to stay in the same size for 15 years studies have shown women gain an average around 7 pounds an year and men around 5 so yeah I get it shouldn't have to constantly keep buying but same dress for 15 years is absolutely impractical unless one is okay wearing faded colors (due to continously washing) ill-fitting and outdated silhouettes....

Boredom and loneliness have slowly but surely created a dangerous spending habit in me that has started to cause me massive anxiety. Kira Sharp I have turned to reading instead of Online shopping. I am even planning on not renewing my Amazon Prime membership when it expires in a couple of months. It’s just too easy to click and have it magically show up. Now when I feel like shopping I pick up my Kindle and distract myself with reading. I by and download books that are about 99 cents to $1.99 so I don’t mind that. Also, I have noticed that I have definitely changed my RU-vid watching habits. Recently I unfollowed about a dozen RU-vidrs who were solely fashion and makeup pushers. I now follow several money managers, mommy bloggers, and recipe RU-vidrs instead. I am too easily swayed by what I see and had to remove the temptation.

To all those complaining that she's making a video about shopping less when you (the viewers) are broke and can't afford to shop: 1. It's STILL a good thing that she shops less than before, no need to shame her for having more money than you 2.There are many middle-class people who will be able to relate to this video so it's a useful video even if not everyone can relate 3. even people who are technically broke still spend money and are addicted to shopping very often - good for you if you don't but this video is ALSO helpful to people who have credit-card debt because of shopping. Instead of mocking or shaming her for spending a lot BEFORE, maybe give her credit for spending less NOW. AND for making this video. Not every idea is relatable for every single person.

I'm not a massive shopper anyway but still... Buying clothes from flee markets, carboot sales and second-hand shops is SO MUCH BETTER for the environment. Bye bye planet-destroying materialism supportive hauls and hello environmentally friendly thrifting! vilmabrownie I agree. Beyondretro is a great site where you can buy good quality second hand clothing that goes as far back through the years to the 60s. I've bought coats, sweaters, tshirts from there which are totally unique of amazing quality at great prices and that you won't find on the highstreet. If I need something, I'll buy from there - I don't only get to be individual but I help the planet too. 🌎❤️❤️

Hey Ingrid! Not to seem like I've missed the whole point of this video, but I'd love to see what items in your closet have been high quality enough to last you so long! I've been realizing that the large quantity of clothing I do have has been stressing me out because the vast majority of the items has something wrong with it - whether it's wear and tear, strange fit, or just not suiting my style. It also is stressful having so many options and seemingly endless laundry. I love your style and would love to see what items have lasted you and how you recommend whittling things down to avoid so much wasted money and clothing.

Alexandra Kharas About a year ago I embraced “cozy minimalism”. This is not a strict minimalistic doctrine where you aren’t allowed to own anything, but a more relaxed philosophy where I allow myself to own just enough and I fight clutter viciously. I live in Michigan so I need seasonal wardrobes just for survival, so I limit myself to about 25 pieces total for Spring/Summer and about 25 pieces of clothing for Fall/Winter. I try to stick to the one in one out rule, and to be bought I must absolutely LOVE the item. I used to just buy whatever fit, not anymore. I have forced myself to become super picky! I will say I have changed the way I do laundry now as a result. I no longer just throw items in the wash and hope for the best. I buy washable fabrics, spot treat immediately, use the gentle cycle more, and lay sweaters flat to dry and then fluff in the dryer on no heat once they are. It is a little more time consuming to do laundry in a way that prevents wear and tear but my clothes are definitely lasting longer. Also, I do most of my shopping from Kohl’s because I am not made of money.

I love this type of content since I have also been on a journey of spending less. I was addicted to shopping, to the point where I was spending money I didn’t have. I finally realized that it was lowering my quality of life and my credit score, so I removed the temptations as much as I could. I quit going to websites just to browse and deleted most of my clothing apps. When I got bored and was tempted to shop, I replaced it with art. I took up painting and learned to draw. Now, I realize that art brings me so much joy, and it doesn’t cost me nearly as much as my shopping addiction did. I’m like you. I will shop occasionally, but I definitely set boundaries. I have found that I don’t desire it as much since I removed many of the temptations and replaced it with other activities. I would love to see more videos on this type of content. It is really helpful as I continue on my journey, and I’m sure that it would be helpful to so many others as well. 😀

To me, stopping to shop wasn’t even an active decision. It was more a shift of interest. I realized one day that i hadn’t bought any new clothes except for socks or underwear in over a year. I was still happy with my wardrobe though. I have since started to actively invest in items that will last me for ages and are often second hand or by sustainable brands. But that’s pure luxury for me. I rebuy worn out jumpers that I’ve loved until they’ve fallen apart. I one day decided I would only ever wear the same ten outfits to work and never worry about what to wear to work again. It was supposed to be a test but I’ve done it for almost two years now. It wasn’t an anti shopping decision, it was just a time management thing. Maybe once you’ve found a style you’re happy with, you don’t need to explore anymore.

I slowly started to realize I should tackle where my stress, boredom, sadness, etc. is coming from and improve those areas of my life (for example spending time with my friends to destress or even just meditate instead of going on a shopping spree). Once I began ONLY keeping things I genuinely wear, love, and use on a daily basis I felt so much lighter and happier because I knew I put a lot of time and love into every piece in my home and it's not just JUNK. I now love the majority of what I wake up to and it's really mentally freeing & allows me to be more productive/happier every day. I would recommend watching Minimalism on Netflix :) they really go in depth about it

This is such a well timed video for me. I’ve been having so many conversations with women recently - friends, colleagues, literally a career coach last night - about not punishing myself for simply growing, evolving, and changing my perspective on something to better suit who I am now, not who I have been in the past. Acknowledging that has been the biggest catalyst for growth for me in this past year.

I can relate 100% to shopping when I am feeling sad or lonely or if I want to escape from what I'm going through at the moment. I see something I like I feel like buying it will make me happy but the truth is, 99% of the time, that happy feeling is only temporary and I'm right back to feeling whatever it is I was trying to escape from.

It’s so easy to drink the koolaid. When you look at stores and all the stuff that’s in them one can see how you can get caught up in it. I think it’s so healthy to question what we buy like : is this a need or a want ? And it’s great to use things as a reward too and for me if I have saved up for something it feels so good to buy it ! I’m also someone who picks up something walks around the store with it and then decides “do I really need this “ . And even in the media in regards to the Royals it’s like “ omg she is re wearing that dress she wore at this persons birthday “ it’s so goofy 🙃. And watching these RU-vid creators spend spend and get all these clothes it’s truly mentally exhausting like I honestly sometimes have to mute the person because I need a break . Anyway Ingrid thank for this video! It’s refreshing and real.

I can really identify with this! Since some weeks i also have the "rule" (can't think of a softer word....) when it comes to shopping: 1. Do i really need it? 2. Can i get 2nd hand it in a good condition (i live in germany and we have a great 2nd hand platform "Kleiderkreisel")? Only if i really need it OR REALLY want it for several weeks and cannot find it 2nd hand, then i will buy it from a store. I never would have thought that you try to shop less, but i am so pleasantly surprised! Would LOVE more re-styling videos and more videos about the staples in your closet (oh and also with skincare!).

People actually died during the collapse of one of these factories and the brands said “well we didn’t know” No way! I cannot live with that. So now I ONLY. buy from companies who care about their people, the planet and being a force for good. I don’t throw away my old stuff because that’s not good for the planet but I am not getting anything fast fashion anymore. I care about my brothers and sisters on the other side of the globe. @annam9840
@annam9840 5 лет назад
It depends why you're feeling lonely. Personally, as an independent introvert, I have felt lonely almost all my life. I feel lonely when I think no one shares my thoughts and feelings, when I think nobody has my back, when I don't have someone to share experiences with, and when I think I don't have many people who love and care about me, etc. I have been in two long-term relationships, and in one of them I felt worse than when I wasn't in a relationship. Sure, you have someone to experience things with, but as in any relationship, there will be arguments when you can feel he doesn't understand or love you. And if the partner is not right for you, there will be the expectation, and no one to meet it. What helps me is to stay busy, be with my family and learning psychology. Sometimes, the mind can play some awful trick on you. P.S. Sorry for the long reply.

I think you are completely on point when it comes to taking pause and really thinking about what in us makes us go shopping, because most of the time we really don’t need anything. There was a large part in my life where I would shop to keep up with trends and feel worthy. I realize now that I don’t need to have the newest things to feel great about myself and feel worthy. I shop rarely now, and when I do I get something I really like and mostly at thrift stores (underwear and shoes excluded). I learned a lot about myself and the internal things I needed and still am learning to work on. It was also shocking how much time I have now that I’m not online or wondering around the mall. Most people have to live like this anyway....must be so hard for you to find somewhere else to spend your thousands of dollars...smh.

Many people have shopping addiction who CAN'T afford it, either. Think about how people get into credit card debt.

This video was so beautiful and important. I've been watching you i think since I was like 16 or less and I am 21 now , and to think back at your videos then and your videos now I'm just blown away by how you have grown into this really mature insightful youtuber. I feel like I've grown with you through the years and I find that so great. Love what you're promoting and I hope other youtubers will also be inspired by it.

Thank you so much for this!! So few influencers would talk about buying LESS, but your constant search for meaningful life lessons and how to better impact the world around you is so inspiring and encouraging. I’m really considering doing this in 2019 and you make it feel so much more possible. Thanking you for putting empowering people over selling to people. You’re most definitely my favorite online influencer. Keep it up girl!!! ❤️

Had a very similar journey! I can't believe how not purposefully I was living before and how I could never go back! It's a lot of emotional work but you start to feel good and follow that wave. I feel so happy with my life now and am happy you've gone through this too!

Thank you, Ingrid for this video. I'm glad to see a big RU-vidr finally talking about this. I agree that we don't need to stop our shopping desires completely but be mindful of why we are buying. Thank you for turning your channel into a platform for teaching self-care and being environmentally and being a better human being. You are awesome!
