I started watching your videos a few months ago and I completed FreeCodeCamp, and CS50. It was a lot of late nights and grinding and I’m still grinding but I have my first developer job interview next week!! I’m so nervous and probably going to bomb but I’m so excited.

I currently working on freeCodeCamp. So far it has worked good for me. I haven’t given the Odin Project a shot yet but I plan to. It sometimes feels like a bummer when people look down on self-taught learners (for whatever field) I am one that others don’t believe will amount to anything that what I am doing now. I do have my wife that believes in me. I know that the time is now and I will succeed. I have been studying code for 2 months and I feel like I have made significant progress. I don’t plan on giving up. I hope anyone who reads this feels the same. It’s a tough road and I am well aware that it’s not easy but I love it.

I'm not comparing them to anything else, but as an App Academy Open student, I can attest that it is a fantastic curriculum and I never felt pushed to pay. Their Discord is wonderful for a community feel and for support.

I agree, but in the middle stage, I don't mind codecademy as a freemium option. They give you an intro to discrete math, which is the basis of data structures and algorithms. I personally appreciate that because sometimes DS&A online courses make it seem like you just have to memorize that when there is a rhyme and reason to it. It's math after all! But there's no reason why someone can't get that first job with entry level skills, then drill into knowledge gaps to pass harder interviews for a next job, if they want.

since nobody mentioned it yet, OSSU is also a nice completely free CS curriculum that focuses more on overall knowledge and problem solving rather than specifically web development. A good place to start if you desire to have the knowledge of a CS university graduate

OSSU seems a bit overkill in certain areas. I think Teach Yourself CS is a better more focused resource that if you finished you would then know what you would want to branch out into.

I started both The Odin Project and Free Code Camp back when they both started. I would recommend doing The Odin Project first and then do Free Code Camp for further learning. The Odin Project covers much of the basics I skipped over, and that's why I'm going back to complete their curriculum. I'm sure I can finish it before 2024 gets here, as long as I'm not too busy with my web development volunteer work and freelance projects.

Yes! I've been using freeCodeCamp and The Odin Project in tandem with Team Treehouse. I found, that with my personal learning habits, that The Odin Project was so text heavy and isolating, videos from Team Treehouse were helpful in having someone in my ear. I know TOP recommends to stick with one track, but using them together has been great. One with the text notes and one for video explanations.

I didn't like TOP because of the text heavy lessons. I recommend using a text to speech extension. Helps me absorb the material.

@@maximorodriguez6849 just shows that there's no "one" right way. I love the fact that it's text heavy and tried running it through a text2speech extension but it annoyed me. It just depends on your preferred style of studying. You can also switch it up and combine it. What matters is to learn the relevant skills and be competent in your field.

There's many options for the different learning styles. I personally prefer text heavy because I like to set my own mood with lightning and background music. I'm unable to learn properly just from videos, or even in real life someone talking. I will get distracted and not pay much attention haha

I’ll add Harvard cs50, DSA RU-vid courses, and maybe MDN docs. Oh and get into a habit of going through framework or libraries docs first then branch out to other learning resources. Combine all of these and don’t worry about time, just learn and start building and you’ll be straight in no time

I just stumbled upon the odin project a few weeks ago, I'm a software engineering student at a professional insitute in my country and tho I know how to code mainly in python, lua an java, by my own professor's advice, complementing your knowledge is required, and with resources like this or cs50, some books and documentation, I've been learning a lot and the results are I'm probably gonna get a job coding next year while I still finish my degree. So yeah, excelent resources. Especially if you're not a begginer anymore and you have some experience coding.

couldn't agree more , am currently stuck in a code cademy which was supposed to be beginner friendly and about front end and backend introduction but we've been learning C to the point where everyone is exhausted to the point where people are dropping out, c was fun up to pointers then everything started sounding way too theoretical for something we don't plan on using . they don't offer a brief video with detailed example of topics like freecodecamp does and the worst part is that most of these projects are time sensitive and their code checker is a black box , they made us write a simple shell fro this big project with it was hell and i wouldn't be a ble to recreate that. contrast that with when i did the freecodecamp javascript data structures projects and everything was clear from the tests to the expected outcomes , it took me a while to finish them but i was so proud in the end and felt like i learned something

@@femi_danjuma this C fundamentals are worth it , some of the python stuff is okey but the most value is the DevOps stuff . You can keep self teaching something else on the side but if you have the time just finish it . Things are now tricky because you need to be in one of the cities with a physical location because some of the classes have to be in a physical class and ChatGPT will help you out when you're stuck

i just started learning how to code on june 28th and im hooked. im 22 and work at a walmart warehouse for almost 3yrs now but never really learned anythin that helped me. Hey my suggestion are: If you go to gym or any other place Where they give out paper form take that form and turn it into a webpage it's best because it's a real world application and I have made my own gym membership form (the gym where I workout). But didn't tell a soul about that webpage. Because it's not perfect. In short you get the idea. Forms are easy and they are everywhere in real world. So just look around and just copy paste it on a webpage using HTML elements and CSS.

Which of these would you say are needed for a front end and mid end development job? I use a mix of both of those and a udemy course called the full stack web developer course…mainly because it’s nice to have videos to follow and watch, bouncing between those 3 may not sound productive to some but I find it helps to not only solidify some of the knowledge I’ve gained but also each one has just a little something to teach that the others don’t…..now once I can get the hang of if and for and switch statements everything will be easier

Back when I started learning coding for web-development (in my middle school days), Codecademy used to be "free" for their whole curriculum. However, after several years coming back into it, I was upset to see that only a part of the curriculum was "free". 0 ~ 0 I don't use it anymore since I finished their JavaScript, HTML, and CSS course, but still a bit of a bummer.

On top of everything you mentioned it's good to get into these free options anyway: because 1 you may need to test the waters to see if the industry is for you, 2 to test if you have the propensity for the curriculum, 3 if you are going to a boot camp anyway why not prep ahead, 4 save money and donate once you get a job, etc.

Personally I don't think W3Schools is that good for learning. It will teach you syntax but not teach you to really build anything or understanding beyond it. I used it for HTML and some CSS, but either FCC or TOP are much better for actually learning.

I’m really bummed. I tried starting Odin Project but I was hit with a roadblock right away. You have to have a mac or have Linux. However, my laptop doesn’t support having another OS or even the virtualbox. Makes me sad since I can’t afford a newer laptop 😢

Well if you are already experienced it would make sense to make a lot of projects with React. You can do React section at TOP or FCC and take it from there.

Try Full Stack Open. It's aimed at intermediate programmers and starts you off with React before getting into the back-end.

I think TOP is possibly enough to land a junior developer role, yes, esp. for web development. From there you can tailor your resources and learn on the job. My friend did TOP and got an offer half-way through as he started applying, and while he is a developer it's in another language.

The only issue with freecodecamp is the lack of repetition. You complete a single task and the next one assumes full understanding of the previous content. Personally I have found books to be a better, strong learning resource while freecodecamp a resource to test knowledge

@@wyndexman3028 I'm pretty new to coding and mainly have been focusing on JavaScript - recently just finished Head First JavaScript Programming which is from 2014, so pre-ES6. This isn't really an issue so long as you're aware of the ES6 changes that replaces some of the stuff you'll see in the book. (let & const instead of var; arrow functions; classes for constructors - just the ones I can think of). If you do freecodecamp's Javascript curriculum you can learn the ES6 stuff. I will say that freecodecamp's descriptions/explanations are similar to what you'll see in MDN, which is the Holy Grail for web development. So once you develop a decent enough understanding from a real beginner's book, you can move onto "drier", syntaxically-dense sources like freecodecamp. Also been reading "You Don't Know JS Yet" and "CSS in Depth", but I haven't read enough to really comment on them. They were just books I saw that were readily recommended.

Ok for me some of the best books for complete beginners or even persons with coding knowledge are books published by Mark Myers . If your at html, CSS or even javascript there is a book for you which simplifies everything also to clear up freecodecamp lack of repetition. Freecodecamp is great so use both of them. Also Mark Myers books are outdated but the concepts behind the code remains the same so keep that In mind.

It's good because it's difficult. Some people say CS50 is not for beginners but that's not true. I was able to complete it with basically no programming knowledge. Do it, you'll learn a lot.

@@rod6722 thanks for your input! I had started TOP but running the VM for Linux was a drag. Constant issues with screen resolution every time I booted it up, etc. so it made me not want to continue with it. Started Freecodecamp and have been doing their new course so I’ll also check this out.

I don't know about the new one (with Python), but the old one (with Ruby) is really great. It's essentially a more hardcore version of The Odin Project (which, if I'm not mistaken, was created by App Academy graduates). It's a huge time investment but it's probably one of the best resources available on the Internet. You'll learn back-end, front-end, data structures, algorithms, and build many projects along the way.

Freelance has to be full stack. Doubt too many people hire front ends for short projects except maybe other back end developers but likely wont have investor type of money if they are not hiring full time.

I feel freecoecamp wastes my time alot. They intentionally word questions in a way to test you. Instead of just teaching you code and what it means. This slows you down by at least 5 times slower than learning from somewhere like 3wschools. I don't want to be constantly tested on basic stuff, I want to learn it, and write it. Than ill test myself later, when I learn projects and coding problems. It really is wasting my time. It took me 10 minutes for a question once, just because they gave no example to begin with, they fail to teach you something before testing you on it. The same thing can be taught to you in 2 minutes including typing the code out 3 times over.
