Why I am selling my Dart Flyscreen

I bought the classic flyscreen by Dart in hopes of reducing wind noise on longer trips. Sadly, it did the opposite and increased the level of noise to an unbearable level. I am 5'11'' with a 32'' inseam and ride a 2018 Triumph Bonneville T120. Based on my testing, I would need to be at least 6'3"' tall for the flyscreen not to negatively affect me.

THANK YOU! It’s very disappointing when nobody posts this REAL hands on or whatever you want to name it video, because they always get a new one, maybe sponsored and they don’t say anything about the pros and cons of the product. You have my Congratulations and again a, THANKNYOU! Because you saved me money and more important than that, you saved me TIME!

Dr Julio Voget you’re welcome! For some it may be fine because it really all depends on your height and riding position. But for an average height like mine (6 foot) on a normal / upright riding position like a Bonneville, it was unbearable. What really got my to make this video is the fact that the “reviews” you read on the dart website are 99.99% positive. When I posted my negative review there and it never showed up after many days, I realized those b@stards only publish the reviews they like.

Well done that man. I'm only here because I have been looking at a screwn for my 98 TBS. I think I will forget about a screen, I've gone 66yrs without one, a few more won't hurt.👍

They fixed this problem. Dart Marlyn Flyer with much taller height. Just got mine in today and going to reviews it.

Jose Reyna yeah I never got the marlin because I don’t like the look personally (too tall, ruining the retro look of bike). Hope yours works out for you.

Yes, both forwards and backwards -- didn't make any difference. Also looks crap as the gap over the light is not right then.

I just rcvd mine and only tired it out once. I am using a new helmet but the air seems to be hitting right in the forehead or eye area. Looks great and well made. Will have to try it a few more times; but, it was very noisy today...The curve in the shield is the problem. If it was made in a straighter configuration it might go right over me...I am 5'6"....
@CyrilHelnwein
@CyrilHelnwein 2 года назад
I don’t think the curve is the problem. I looked into it a bit more since I posted this video and tried different shields on different naked bikes. In short, depending on the bike you are riding, if the shield is not tall and wide enough and there is no fairing it will create a vacuum of air behind the shield and this creates a vortex of violent air. The only thing that really works is a shield that is tall enough to throw the wind over your head - the shield should be somewhere between the nose and chin. This makes it much better but doesn’t fully solve it yet. A deflector on top to angle the wind will make it better again, but this means the shield must now be shorter otherwise you will not see the road when it rains or gets dirty. Then you also have wind coming from underneath and the sides and this can also be very noisy / violent. So ideally you want a fairing on your bike to take care of that. In short, on a naked bike, a shield just doesn’t work or you need a big huge thing that’s going to somewhat ruin the looks of the bike. Beauty vs practicality. I got a National Cycles “plexifairing GT” for the Bonneville that does a great job now with some modifications and it makes winter riding or long motorway journeys s bliss but looks “eh”.

Thanks so much for approaching this methodically, its very common for people to just say i dont like how it looks or it didnt work for me, to get this level of information is really good. One plus for the bikini fairings that cover the speedo/tacho is that they stop any stones ect smashing them. The screens are generally much cheaper than the instruments, and also they smooth a bit better than the dials, bit i had a strangely shaped one on my duc scrambler that went around the dials and it was terrible, much better with it off. I thought it was due to the odd shape but sounds like it isnt!

Thanks for the video. This is true. I cruise around 60 to 80 kph. deflect bugs out of my body. I am keeping my screen.
@MrEye4get
@MrEye4get 8 месяцев назад
It's a small fly screen; different from a windscreen It helps redirect the wind (bugs) away from your chest. You must sit behind a wider and taller screen if you want full coverage.

A great review and I can absolutely confirm this. I had bought a Dart flyscreen for my Bonneville Bobber and experienced the same issue, sold it again after 50 km. When I bought my Scrambler 1200 I went for the original Triumph flyscreen but once again had the same issue, took it off after the ride home from the dealership since the noise and bobbing was unbearable. I do love the looks of flyscreens, but they are unbearable for me - side note: I'm about 182 cm tall, short legs and tall upper body.

I just installed the same windscreen on my Bonneville with the angle all the way against the tach/rpm gauges. Bear in mind that I wear ear plugs but I honestly dis not feel.any buffeting. I'm 5'11", medium build, etc. Not sure why but so far it's worked well for me on top of getting rid of the wind blast off my chest and shoulders.

@CyrilHelnwein
@CyrilHelnwein 4 года назад
XKSS It might work for you, and it might not... all depending on your height and riding position. But honestly: the shorter the screen, the less likely it’s going to do anything more than alter the bike looks. What really does piss me off about dart is that a) you can’t return it if you’re not happy with it (because you’ve used it), and b) their website reviews are misleading as they don’t seem to allow any critical reviews on their website (both of my attempts to do so never appeared on their website). I guess I was naive when I made the purchase and didn’t see one single bad review, I actually bought 2 at the time (one for my wife’s T100 and she had the exact same problem even though she’s a few inches shorter than me).

I agree way to much wind noise all it does is take a little bit of wind of your chest not worth the money I’m 5/11 I’m taking mine off

I had the same issue too! On my t120. Am 6’ 2”. I might have to hang on a bit more above 65mph-but most of my riding is below 70, so no wind helmet/buffet noise now in the 35-70 range.

I have the same problem. Just fitted last week and although it took the wind away from my chest which made for a more comfortable ride in regards to relaxing my arms to the handlebars the buffering of the wind bouncing off the flyscreen straight into my helmet is very noisy and uncomfortable. I'm of average size and 6ft. So I'm hoping I can exchange it for the next size up which I hope will send the wind over the top of my helmet. Stay Tuned...

Good luck with it! I found the perfect solution for mine, a National Cycles “plexifairing 3”. With an added wind deflector at the top it’s like riding in a convertible. Looks huge and unsightly but I can ride all winter long 😊

I recently bought and fitted a Dart Marlin small screen (fly screen) to my Moto Guzzi Roamer . The wind over the top of the screen hit me in the head and caused a lot of wind noise . The screen has no adjustment so nothing can be done to stop where the wind hits the helmet . Mine is for sale also .

I confirm the comment of Julio, but do you had the chance to test the lager „Marlin flyscreen“?
@CyrilHelnwein
@CyrilHelnwein 4 года назад
mike hogan no I haven’t; I heard from others that it’s a small improvement but doesn’t really solve the problem of wind buffeting to the head. I did test a much taller triumph touring long-haul screen as well as universal touring screen by MRA, and even attached a small adjustable spoiler on the top of these 2 screens. That yielded the best results but it definitely didn’t stop all the buffeting. And it certainly destroyed the look of the bike. On a naked bike the wind also comes from underneath and the sides, so there is much at play here. I have come to the personal conclusion that windscreens just don’t work well with naked bikes, at least not for my height and my riding position. On a more sporty / forward leaning bike with low handlebars it would give a different experience. And also opposite in the other direction for a cruiser or bobber where you are sitting much lower and leaning back/legs forward.

@@CyrilHelnwein Update: It does block wind. Some whistling sound is noticed but I can live with it. But it seems to affect the handling a little bit when going 100km/h (60mph), kinda giving me an unstable feel when going straight.
@CyrilHelnwein
@CyrilHelnwein Год назад
@@hanoiscrambler drive slower then 😂 jokes aside, what is happening when you ride at 100kmh? Shaking steering? I highly doubt a flyscreen will affect the handling of the bike, that can be caused by worn tyres, wrong type of tyres for the road, incorrectly set up suspension, wheel bearings worn out, etc., etc. Try riding the same road and conditions with and without the screen, then you’ll see the real difference.
