Loved seeing your full process and your honest presentation of the challenges. It gives me confidence in my own process seeing photographers I respect on RU-vid dealing with the some of the same issues.
Thanks for such an honest and balanced video. Just wondering if there are old Nikon lenses that have the same character as the expensive Leica for us less fortunate enthusiasts? Lovely relaxing video to watch and learn.
I should do some tests in the studio as I never seen any banding with HSS. With old school hyper sync for sure but not with HSS. I only have cheap Godox strobes and shoot almost 100% of my outdoor shots with strobes. I do agree, using ND filters will be less stress on the strobes. I would need at least 6 stops if I shoot f2 with my GFX.
Just did a shoot similar to this at golden hour and the wrong direction of the flash made most of the pictures look like a cheap AI collage... Lesson learned
I started in 1980 - I’ve used light meters for a lot of my career- with histograms I am good without one. I had one shot off and the rest were good. But I know many still use them very successfully for their work.
The hss comes with its problems. I’ve actually considered the Hasselblad route because of their leaf shutters. I’m hoping that the shutter tech in some the new cameras coming out will allow us to synch at higher speeds - manufacturers seem so hell bent on increasing FPS when higher synch speed would be so much more useful.
I think you're being too hard on yourself. Everyone has to take a couple of test photos at the beginning to see how things look. All of the rest of your pics after the test photos looked fine regardless of where the sun was coming from in relation to the strobe. You said it at the end (paraphrased), it doesn't matter what the technical flaws are with photos as long as the client is happy. It thus follows that happy clients are paying clients. Good job! Now, for the high-speed sync work-around, those are good notes to consider. I always find HSS a bit of a frig to set up anyway and would much rather use a different solution. Yours seems to work well.
😂 would that be what your client would like? Remember, we shoot for our clients, they right our checks. She absolutely loved the images because they showed environment.
