Why I Bought 12,000 CDs

I’m constantly asked why I buy so many CDs. Then I hear comments that I can’t possibly listen to them all. That I’m a hoarder. There must be something wrong with me. Or that no one needs to own more than a couple hundred. I will tackle all of these things and more when I explain Why I Bought 12,000 CDs.

The fact that you're able to pull out any random album and tell a story about it, shows that it is indeed a library that is well taken care of.

Funny, my grandmother (about 40 years ago) always asked me what I was going to do with all those records I bought :) I always told her "If I would be a smoker it's something that only lasts a moment" if I buy a record, it's something that keep you going a lifetime :) And for the record, I still own all the records I bought when I was a kid :)

@goopah
@goopah 7 месяцев назад
Exactly. It's nobody's business. I've been to the homes of actual hoarders, and there is a huge difference. You literally cannot walk through a room without climbing over piles of things, and there tends to be rodents and spoiled food everywhere. But even then, I'm tempted to say leave them alone if they are happy. Unless you are a relative concerned about them, or a landlord who is going to need to do a major cleaning job some day. Most collectors, on the other hand, tend to be organized. When I have guests at my house, they usually end up acting like they are at a music museum, looking for their favorite music and asking me to play it when they find it, which I am always happy to do. 🙂 For me, collecting is a joy, not a job. And I kind of hate that there are people out there that only collect because they are speculating on future dollar values. I can't imagine parting with my favorite music. And while I know that streaming is currently capable of solving most peoples' listening needs, with RU-vid it comes with ads, and with all streaming platforms, albums frequently get pulled for licensing issues, so I enjoy having a collection that I can count on always being there for me. Sorry for my little dissertation there. I got carried away because of my strong feelings in the matter.

That is a fir point too. However, many colectors do listen to everything they own or at least are aware they enjoy xperimenting listening to a vast array of music. Being a completists is something I really can't comprehend. I have had artists I have loved who then have gone down a different track and I haven't liked their new music. In these cases I stopped buying the albums. On the one hand, I agree: it's nobody's business what he buys or collects, as long as it's ethical and legal. That's for him to decide, and everyone else can go jump in a lake. The only people he might need to justify it to are his loved ones or, if he's a spiritual man, a higher power. But when you make a RU-vid channel about your huge CD collection, you're necessarily inviting all manner of comments and questions, and some of them will be negative. That's the nature of the beast. If you don't want people being negative about your hobby, keep it private.

Not sure why you're talking about people blocking people, but anyway, my point stands: if you're going to show off something about yourself that many would could consider unusual--and having thousands of CDs these days is certainly unusual--and do it on a public Internet forum that explicitly invites comment from strangers, you're going to get all kinds of remarks and questions, including ones you don't like. The hoarder accusation is ridiculous!!! Music is released gradually and anything bought before still functions and gets used repeatedly over decades. What are you supposed to do, throw out an artist's back catalogue as new stuff gets released? A library is a good word for it - it's just storage of everything that's come out over the years and physically ends up looking like a lot. I'd say anyone who calls that hoarding doesn't have a proper understanding of music appreciation. Treating it as disposable is not what the artform is about.

I can relate with you 1000%. Around the same age, got the bug from my older sister and her first Michael Jackson and Eurythmics albums, glam metal was my thing as a teenager, my first Vinyl was Foreigner Agent Provocateur and first CD was Apetite for Destruction. By early 2000s i had around 3,000 CDs, 700 Vinyls and 100 cassettes, already expanding my musical tastes from Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, several forms of Rock from 60s garage/psychedelia to Metal. Around that time and due to constant job relocations i had to slow down a bit but now that i am back to a steady place, i have resurfaced my full collection, reinstalled my sound system and enjoying every bit of it. I am not investing that much anymore but thanks to streaming i am constantly looking for good music and selectively go out to buy new records. Younger generation will not understand the connection with physical media, the images, smell, the process of putting on a record and sitting for 40 minutes listening to a full album while reading the material. Now at 51 i still gather with my high school buddies, visiting record stores and gong to concerts. And this will go on as long as possible…

Backed everything up to 2 drives and created a PLEX server. I sold or gave away all but about 200, which are collectible or that I want to pass along to my son. I love having everything right there. I can play in my car, on my TV, on bluetooth speakers. Or plug up to my rack system and play from an old phone. My collection comes with me on vacation, and to the gym and on long rides, etc. It's the best of both worlds, and I don't have a house full of stuff that somebody will have to physically discard when I am no longer here.

I am mostly a vinyl guy, but I also own a large collection of CDs as well. I have long given up on making people understand. All I know is, a download is not tangible; some of these remasters sound crummy and that includes stuff put on vinyl too. Some of my best sounding cds are from the early days before the compression wars started. The example I can think of is my Led Zep Houses of The Holy from the mid 80s; I think it runs all over the Led Zep studio box set from 1993 for the same album. Bro if you were a hoarder, we would not be able to see the carpet behind you. I think you have a very well curated collection. Enjoy your tunes, screw what others think. I spotted your original Pink Floyd Pulse on the shelf ;-). Love that one.

I Agree with everything you said. I probably have a little bit more than half of what you do. A lot of mine came from working at record stores, back in the days of promos, but have purchased a lot also. It's always a thrill going to purchase and have never been able to buy just one or two. You don’t have to justify anything to me my friend. If I add up just 2 bands that I have the most material from would be close to 80 CDs alone. 😵‍💫 It is what it is, but when I’m free to do what I like I can listen for 8 hrs a day no problem. That is 6 to 8 CDs right there. ❤

I have more art books than a lot of public libraries. I have enough art supplies to start a small store. I have thousands of albums myself although not nearly as many as you and I can truthfully say is all that's held me back from more is money, or rather the lack of it. Art and music have been the staples of my life my life. Enjoyment in these things and the enriching value they bring to one's life is what makes life worth living. This is true of any collection that brings personal satisfaction.

You make some valid points, but there is redundancy. #1 you'll have the digipak version then you'll go out and buy the jewel case version, but you will keep both. #2 You'll have the big massive box set, then you'll buy the 2 cd version which already has all the songs in the box set. #3 You have many greatest hits of an artist. Why keep buying them if they have yet again all the same songs? Just because you like the running order better on a certain one? #4 You have multiple versions of a cd. I also don't get when you have one of those 2on1 cds, yet you will go out and buy the stand alone version of both! So that's why you have OVER 12k cds! Also I'm sure I once heard you say that you hear a cd at least 3 times to let it sink in. In that regards, there's no way you will ever hear most of your collection again.
@kngkrmson2179

Well explained Brendan. It’s definitely not hoarding my collection is an important part of me . Its all in order and looked off by me . The art work was very important to me remember getting out of the blue by elo I couldnt stop looking at it and it suited the music . When i watch your videos i never think he sounds out of control you don’t buy 10 twenty copies of same cd . I know someone who was a hoarder with his vinyl he would go to same store and buy all the tge copies of one particular artist amd kept them all sealed and never played. I would go along on a Friday to this particular store if i left it too late all the copies of an new release i wanted they would sell to him . He passed away a few years ago and his complete collection got auctioned off 10 and 20 copies of each album sealed were all sold for next to nothing now he was a hoarder as it was mental heath issue. So it was sad . But i love getting new albums and discovering new artists. Take care joe

Brendon, I enjoyed your video, but it could have been much shorter. "I have over 12,000 cds." "Why?" "Because I CAN!" [mike drop.] 😇 Seriously, your point about how much others spend on bar tabs & eating out is something I brought up to various friends twenty years ago when I only had a few hundred CDs (now at about 3,200...and we won't talk about the DVD collection) and they didn't like it when I said "I still have my CDs; you literally flush your money away."

I've amassed about a 2,000 disc collection over the years myself (and in the last 5 years went back and started collecting vinyl again). And I went through a period where I started selling a lot of stuff off, too, in the mid-2000's when digital took over - a lot of which I've begun to re-buy in a measured fashion. And I've begun buying stuff, that I only had on digital for years and years. But I still really love the convenience of streaming. I've ripped my entire collection to FLAC and stream it through Plex whenever I want. My collection is mostly original masterings as newer masterings tend to sound really bad. But it's really the best of both worlds. When I'm home, I'll play the discs whenever possible but when I'm out and about, Plex turns my collection into my own private streaming service.

Another funny thing is these people who want to question why you purchased all these CDs; ask them if they smokes cigarettes the past 30 years. If they did like I know plenty of people have, they’ve spent way more on something they have nothing to show for it besides possible …….

You make a very valid point: Your hobby manifests itself as physical possessions that remains in your life, rather than something that passes through it. Each CD on your shelf is about the price of a pack of cigarettes or a 6 pack of beer. Nobody has the right to judge how you live your live. Of course, the burning question, since you have no desire to sell your collection, is what will happen to it after you die? Maybe you're leaving it to a niece or nephew, or maybe you're donating it to a museum or a favorite used record store? Let us know in a video! I would strongly encourage you to catalog the whole collection on Discogs since that will make it far easier for whoever inherits your collection.
