Hey Josh Great presentation here. DSLR all the way for me. I shoot Canon 5d mkiv and will never upgrade,why because I don’t have to. For me to change it would cost me mega dollars. At the end of the day it’s not the camera when it comes to photography,it’s the person behind it. Thanks for bringing this one to. Sniper Photography

I have been shooting with the D850 "which I still own" for years as a wildlife/bird photographer, and been shooting the Z9 for close to a year now. The D850 still excels in certain categories where the Z9 and ALL mirrorless fail at, first the OVF, there is NOTHING like a OVF, second is the battery life, the D850 with the grip "which I use, I use the Velo with wasabi batteries, same as the Nikon brand for half the price" can go for days before worrying about the battery, remember the D850 does not have to power an electronic viewfinder, and the third thing is AF, yes mirrorless have eye and animal tracking, but it does fail in certain situations where the background has more contrasts than the object in the foreground, the sensor most of the time tries to pick up the higher contrast subject, which is a no no is bird and wildlife photography. What also happens with these AF/EYE/SUBJECT tracking technologies is that most people forget how to frame their subject and rely on the tracking to do the work for them. The reason I got the Z9 was mostly for it's video capabilities, where DSLR's stink at, the bigger buffer compared to the D850 and the higher FPS, which all these features are not needed for landscape photography. If they had made a D850 DSLR with the specs of the Z9, I would have gone with the DSLR. And don't buy into the BS most of these youtuber snake oil $$$$$ salesmen try to sell people, they get angry when someone calls them out on their BS, heck every week they try to sell everyone the new and "better" camera. For them it's all about clicks $$$ and not PHOTOGRAPHY. Another reason why most of those channels, pretty much all of them have tanked in their viewership. I also owned the D500 since inception, killed it last year in a freak mishap, still miss it.
@Marko-od7eb

@gordon9177 You can't even compare these two regarding batter life. D850 blows it out of water especially with vertical grip.

Thanks for the interesting video Josh. I have recently ordered my D850 for wildlife and nature photography. Mirrorless may be the next step, though personally I want to wait a little longer until all the bugs are ironed out. I'm off to the Okavango Delta in October and am really looking forward to using it. I have chosen the 200 - 500 lens with a 24 - 120 as a back-up. I bought the battery grip to increase the frame rate to between 9 or 10 fps. I look forward to watching your other videos. Take care, David

I might have to pull the trigger in the last couple of days in this sale. Great to see this is still top dog in landscape photography.

I don’t regret buying the D850 at all. I used a 20mp camera before upgrading, and it is a very noticeable difference. Both those lenses are super sharp. For landscape photography F/4 is more than enough as usually you will shoot around F/8.

@@JoshProstejovsky I have a question that's not made very clear in spec sheets; Does the D850 shoot with the full frame coverage in the mRAW and sRAW settings? I'm assuming that medium and small RAW is implementing a pixel binning or pixel skipping process and/or self converting 14 to 12 bit but still using the whole sensor area, I hope. I'm just wondering as I have no desire to shoot "everything" at 46Mps but want it to be there if I need it.

Nice relaxing vid. You came away with some real nice photos. Living that close to Yellowstone, = LUCKY-DOG!!! D850 is a great camera in any year. If you didn’t shoot wildlife, I would say the Z7. Don’t need the 2 version for landscape. I’m in the same boat (wildlife also) but with the D810. I could use the tilt screen, focus stacking & newer AF features/button options. My only concern about the D850 is how long they will support it if need be. Enjoy your new equipment &, happy shooting.

Interesting what you say. I'm a complete amateur with not a huge amount of spare money. I've had three Nikon DSLRs in the past 16 years starting with a D80, then a D7000 and 18 months ago a D7500. I thought hard before buying the D7500 but went for it because a) it was familiar, b) I already had lenses which would all still work and c) it was still an excellent camera. I have a two lenses which use the old screw-focus system one of which is pre-D. Both are f1.8 which makes them good indoors and in the city at night. I think you made the right choice.

I have never used a D7500 but I have used a D7200. I have used the Tamron 150-600mm with both the D7200 and D850. I would say the D850 is better for a few reasons: The D850 does have more autofocus points so the auto focus is better. The D850 also has a better dynamic range, image quality and ISO performance. The D850 actually only does 7fps (Without the grip) and the D7500 does 8fps. That being said I have taken portfolio images with both cameras but I would use the D850 for wildlife over the D7200.

Hello Josh ... let me share my experience .. I will try to make a long story short :D .. It took me several years before I've managed back in 2018 to finally make it to fullframe .. until then I was using Nikon DX cameras, D7200 specifically at the time when I had switched to FX. I've bought a second hand D610 but I quickly realized that there is **no** improvement in IQ over my D7200 - literally nothing followed by no ergonomics and workflow improvement - so shortly after that I additionally bought D810, which I have since then as my current FX camera .. After four years with D810 I still find myself using D7200 more than D810 - yes, you hear good. Reason is that my landscape photography is a lot bound with hiking and D810 with "holy trinity" set (16-35 f/4 + 24-70 f/2.8 + 70-200 f/4) is incredibly heavy compared to my backpack-ready lightweight set which consists of D7200 + Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 + Nikon 18-140. Also worth to note, that Nikon's 16-35 is not the best glass in the world and especially for landscape you wanna have edge to edge sharp photo and simply 16-35 + high resolution camera (36MP on my D810) doesn't work well all the time. My Tokina 11-20 on DX body gives me significantly better results overall. Yes, that's it. *** Tokina 11-20 f/2.8 on D7200 outperforms noticeably D810 + Nikon 16-35 in whole ultra-wide range (16-28 after applying crop factor on Tokina) ***. Dynamic range on D7200 and especially ISO invariance is for a reason considered as class leading (among aps-c cameras) and difference to semi-professional beast like D810 is negligible (at least in range ISO 100-500, although with ISO 64 on D810 you get usually much more colours out of shadows in postprocessing but hey - you should in that case use bracketing anyway and use properly exposed foreground than doing shadows-necromancy). Also I've found that useing FX lenses on DX body gives me stunning IQ - if I put aside 36MP with D810 Vs 24MP with D7200 then in general the shot taken with FX lenses is noticeably better on DX body (in same focal length after applying crop factor) because of the corners and sides with inferior performance are just not in.. 24-70 glass on DX body gives after applying crop factor 35-105mm which I find really advantageous range. Currently I am considering to upgrade D810 to D850, well, I will do it sooner or later. If D850 is the latest Nikon's DSLR I want to own it. I am just DSLR guy. DSLR compared to mirrorless seems to have that little something special that makes my heart pump just a little harder - with the optical viewfinder, I am feeling the moment and mirrorless cameras seem to lack some of the immediacies of their DSLR counterparts. One important point - we're talking about landscape photography where usually the edge-to-edge sharp photo and wide DoF are required over other qualities. I don't say that what I've wrote above is 100% valid for other genres. No, just no, that would not be right. I am instant fan of your channel. Subscibed after watching this your video. Thanks for it .. I like it .. And apropos. You perhaps could consider using a circular magnetic filters. These old-school square filters are meh ... ;)
@JoshProstejovsky
@JoshProstejovsky 2 года назад
Thanks for the reply. I agree, a good DX camera with a FX lens will produce some excellent image quality. I have looked into the magnetic filters and they look awesome, I just cant justify buying a new system now as my old school filters are working just fine for me.
@sigsegv111
@sigsegv111 2 года назад
@@JoshProstejovsky I am using KASE magnetic filters (82mm diameter) .. I've been "waiting" long time for a same reason before I've bought a magnetic filters .. I also had a square filters which "worked fine" (super-expensive Breakthrough filters) but I've found a hard way how annoying and cumbersome is to use that bloody square filters system (and that I also don't need GND filters at all) so I realized, that if I wanna to use filters at all, I should get something else than that big square filter set with holder .. And I've instantly loved round magnetic filters and never ever looked back ..

The 780 is much better for video, more like a mirror less camera. It has 24 megapixels while the 850 has 45.7. So if you want to make videos with the camera, the 780 would take great shots and better videos. They are both full frame (FX).

hello dear I want to buy this camera but I heared there is problems on recording videos specially in autofocus.

Yeah the autofocus with video is almost unusable. If I record video I use manual focus and focus peaking. The quality is stunning but due to the autofocus issues I would not buy this camera for video.

Great video ! For your protection in bear country , a Glock 20 in 10 mm for bears will be a good compliment to spray . Be safe , it's a jungle out there !

Im glad you liked the video! It is always good to have a backup to the bear spray. A .44 Blackhawk would do it for me.

Il be brutally honest its 2024 i used z9s in scottish highlands (through a company mine was sponsored by) after 3 days into my 2 weeks mountain climbers shoot , i hated the camera the lenses , i realised they were second rate compared to my 24-70 fl ed vr and 70-200 fl ed vr pro lenses , it became obviously clear early on , the Z equivalents didnt crop in as close as the F versions , WHY same happened printing on high res printers over 300 dots per inch (9600 dpi printers) confirmed my suspicions , so why are my pro f lenses sharper than these all new singing danceing Z counterparts unedited ? Marketing . Suggests most new camera owners will edit their images adding what the camera and lens falls short on ! Shocking . But modern marketing isnt to be trusted , its a numbers game .. after 2 solid weeks with z9s and familiarising buttons and menus , i immediately bought another d850 + grip on returning home feb 2024 , my trust in modern gear has slumped , before buying check all reviews , ask yourself why when testing say a z 85 f1.2 against the f mount 85mm f 1.8 AND NOT the f mount 85 f 1.4 ? Because the z mount 85. 1.2 is no match for the pro f mount lens , like most other z mount counterparts , pro fast f mount lenses were just made to well ! Yet the z pushers wont tell you this , as d850s fly off the shelves , Z cameras are seemingly disposable

Why are you whispering in the middle of Yellowstone National Park? You're not Elmer Fudd hunting wabbits.

Its just habit. I am usually quiet in the backcountry when appropriate as to not scare away wildlife.
