Very cool man! I have also been wanting a RED for quite some time. I'm in the market currently for a cinema camera. similar to your conundrum! I'm waiting for the Komodo but have been looking at the Red Dragon 6K as well. And also waiting for the R5. I love the C200 but I am a sucker for high frame rates. Stoked to see what you make with the RED!
Thanks man! Yeah that R5 has some insane specs that will for sure disrupt the mirrorless market! So far I am absolutely loving my Red and have no regrets. Am learning all I possibly can at the moment though!
Mohamad Fawaz ya it is! Not sure about the Gemini 5k but I think that sensor is better in low light. BUT a big reason the price gap is this is DSMC1 brain not a DSMC2 AND it was used
Congrats. Only problem is that RED doesn't service or sell any parts for DSMC1 bodies. If anything happens you end up with a brick. I'm really pissed at RED for abandoning their customers. A 10 year old Arri Alexa EV is still serviced by ARRI and you can buy any part for it from ARRI. I hope you got the RED cheap and I hope it serves you flawlessly for many years. Cheers!
Yeah I've heard about that... hopefully I don't run into anything. Definitely got it for a steal, just under $9k - that's awesome about Arri I did not know that!
I was definitely looking at that camera. Comparing the specs vs cost compared to the Red I decided to go with the Red. Autofocus would be nice though, not gonna lie lol.
I swear by the Red Cameras - We bought our first Red Scarlet MX - in 2012. We Filmed 2 Multi-award Films with them. And earned even a Best Cinematography award. The power of red Is real
Congrats on your beast. Having shot on an Epic a couple of times, I can say that it's an awesome camera, but probably not the best choice for most indie filmmakers.
Good luck if it breaks and needs repair. RED won't touch DSMC1. I did same thing as you and ended up with a worthless paperweight. Enjoy while it lasts...
I did look at that and contemplate that camera as well! Should’ve mentioned that. Compatibility is a bit of an issue for me, along with mainly shooting only 10 bit & 12bit when you shoot raw. Red shoots 16 bit & RAW across the board
I was definitely considering it! But since that is such a highly awaited camera, I probably wouldn't be able to get ahold of it until mid-next year - a little longer than I could wait. Also, the Red Epic Dragon for $8.8k was the better deal [even though it is an older model] since the original price point was around $25k. Thanks!!
I’m rooting for you bro 😎 high end commercial work unfortunately does require higher end tools. Not to get the job done, because we all know a small mirrorless/DSLR can get the job done, but it’s more about business presentation. Walk onto the filming location with a RED vs an EOSR put clients at ease, as well as you as the Dir/DP as well. It gives you this false sense of notoriety, which sounds bad when just said openly on the surface, but for some reason people just move with more of a purpose when you look the part. Which in turn can produce a more polished end result.
Can you maybe make a video about pointers going from a hobby to starting a video prod business that works with small businesses (scaling a business) since you have experience with that ? 👋🏽👋🏽
Tip number one...social media is EVERYTHING....absolutely everything nowadays. My business was basically nowhere until I started utilizing social media studying its trends. I’m 36 so I have to deal with younger people. They just know more about this stuff and have the word on the street. If you’re 30 or older, that’s the absolute first step in scaling (after you’ve developed your skills and honed them to a professional level....but that’s a given)
Lol renting is never a waste of money! If i break a 50.000 alexa on set i can get a new one in less than an hour without worrying for a single second. The shoot can continue and everyone can go home with slme money in their pocket... that red was a sweet deal though :)
I was highly considering the Komodo, couple reasons I decided against it. Since the masses will be purchasing that camera as soon as it's released + COVD19 delays in production I'm guessing the wait time is going to be pretty long and I was looking to invest this year. Also for the price point I got the Epic Dragon 6K kit for, it was definitely the better deal (even though it is a DSMC1)
@@JustinRomeyn Komodo is shipping now. I have a friend who placed an order and will receive soon. It's only $6,000 for the body and has a much more modern design and sensor. Maybe you can sell your EPIC later and buy one if you find it to be a better camera for you! Autofocus actually works on the Komodo. I'm excited about it! Hopefully I will get one soon.
@@formerlydave agreed man! Super appealing. I have room to work with if I end up wanting the Komodo. Should be able to sell the Red epic dragon for around $8k
Justin Romeyn i know. you have 4k. subscription but why vews is not enough? im tottaly. lost my mind about youtube algorithm😏 they didnt recommand to other. if. we have good. quality of. videos
How do you feel about the Ursa 12k? Do you believe with this new release of the Ursa 12k, it will grab the attention of producers/clients; away from mid-tier Red Cameras?
nice one buddy, I'm also planning to get a RED, I'm into weddings and mostly music video and currently using a GH5, but now due to money issues I was thinking of getting a used Red Scarlet MX for around less than $5000 for a complete kit, I mean what are your thoughts on the Red Scarlet Mx for someone who wants to dive into the red eco-system?
That's awesome! Yes any RED around 5-8k if it is in good shape is a great place to start. That's what I'm doing, starting with DSMC1 brains and will eventually upgrade I'm sure.
I’m kinda in the same boat. I had the canon c100 Mark II which was an awesome all around camera, and this year I started getting way more music video gigs and I wanted to upgrade for something with more high dynamic range and more flexibility in post. My budget is also 5k but I’m just worried about reliability with the Red MX’s. I do have to say currently having a c200 on loan, the raw looks beautiful and similar to the Red Epic but I still can’t make up my mind on what I want lol.
the scarlet is kinda old crap sensor now especially the 4k, unless you got ppl who say we only want our work shot on reds then just get a BMD ursa mini pro or even a pocket 6k. if you go watch reviews vs the scarlet you will see BMD is superior image and much less problems than REDs especially old ones
@@coreyandolina5392 hahaha, trust me the RED Scarlet/Epic MX image is quite good although it's an old sensor as compared to the 6k Dragon sensor, my thoughts are maybe to hold on and save a bit for money jump on to the Red Raven, that way you will have fewer reliability issues and technical support is available, I'm also having troubles in making up my mind whether I should just drop the scarlet and move to a new camera like the raven but if I'm to dump the Red idea them a BMCC 6K will be a good one.
You have any dropped frame issues? I heard about a bunch of these issues and more hardware related ones on the MX sensor models a while ago so steared clear of RED, i'm either going way below their prices or spend a bit extra and get an older Arri.
Still no regrets and actually invested in the RED Komodo as well! Highly recommend the production models of the Komodo when they come out. Great entry price to Red with a lot of versatility considering the small size
So here’s something I haven’t found info on anywhere. Will the red dragon take my Sony g lenses? I have two a7iii and a lot of glass I’ve invested in. Hoping to be able to use it on the RED
Ayala Films so far worth it to me - I can get shots that I could never get with my dragon like flying it on my glidecam, tight spaces, etc. I did get it as my B cam to the Dragon, but might be a great place to start for you
I'm kind of surprised you didn't wait for the R5. Serious question: what can the RED do tbat your Canon can't? I know Parker Wallbeck has a red but still mostly shoots on his 1dxii
The R5 will definitely be a beast of a camera! Might even be upgrading my 1DXii to get the R5. But definitely needed to add a cinema camera in the line up to increase the quality of videos I can produce for commercials/films etc. For instance my Red can shooting up to 22 stops of Dynamic range with HDRx enabled, as well as RAW 16 bit color. Plus they are built for shooting pro video, so if I want to compete with higher-end DP's, I needed to be "playing in the same field" essentially
Parker shoots most if not all his youtube content on the canons. When its client work with the big bucks, hes using his RED. I am also waiting for the R5, but mainly for photography work.
