This is literally me too! I was not really super excited for TOTK, (though I loved BOTW) - but I got so swept up in the hype, I ended up getting the Zelda special edition just to play TOTK!
Literally same. Just picked up my switch oled Friday along with a copy of TOTK. Over the weekend I've now bought mario odyssey, and as a 42 year old gamer who's first video game was super mario bros, the nostalgia trip I'm on right now is incredible. My Ps5 and my 4070 ti and 13700k powered PC might experience a lot of down time.
Haven’t got the Oled but the original switch was worth it for Animal Crossing alone. The amount of joy that gave me in the pandemic was so so worth it. My one issue with it is the store, I find it hard to find things and they rarely put 1st party games on sale. They’re always pretty much launch price
Tooootally man. I kinda wished we had a switch during the pandemic for that exact reason. Animal crossing was such a comfort to so many during that time. Great point dude, even second hand first party Nintendo games still go for £40/50. Craaazy. Another point for the steam deck on that front ehy?
I got my switch in 2021 and bought animal crossing too, but alas I did not get to play it as much during the pandemic as I was a frontline worker. I still had a job and worked through it. Shortly after buying it, the OLED came out. That was a bummer. If I didn't buy it then I would have forked up an extra $50 for the OLED. I've always hated how dim the switch is which is why I mostly play it docked, but recently I've been taking it to work so I can play Tears of the Kingdom. I had BotW for WiiU and that console is stashed away. Didn't want to buy BotW for Switch because it's only dropped by $10 after so many years.
I was a day-one Switch owner that upgraded to the Zelda OLED as well, and I agree. It is a much more pleasant experience in handheld, including the better audio. Personally, I turned off Vivid color and it matches my LG CX nicely.
I also bought the OLED a month ago, my first Switch, and it’s helped me redefine what I expect in gaming. I’m having more fun with titles on the Switch than the PS5 (which is still great, dont get me wrong). But..its just chill…low stress games for the most part.
I also want a switch for the same reason. I had one back in 2019 but grew bored of it. I have a crazy expensive laptop and have nothing but problems with it, I'm more trying to fix it then actually having fun. I remember my switch just working and I miss that
This is what we need more. I see to much of one sided arguments (unreasonable hate or unreasonable love) when it comes to the switch and Nintendo in general. I'm really glad to see someone like you having a crucial amount of objectivity, discussing stuff that's informative. You gained a sub
Ah man thats really kind to say, thank you so much 😄 I think honestly is key right? We all have biases but it's important to look at all sides of a situation ya know? Thank you so much for the sub! 😄
I held off of getting the OLED for a while, because I already had the original switch. But I got the console (without joycons) for somewhat of a discount on eBay. The screen is just so nice to look at and I don't regret buying it at all! I happened to already have extra joycons so I got it for a really good price. I ended up giving my sister my old switch because she plays with her friends in her apartment.
That’s such a great shout! How much money did you save? I tooootally agree. The screen is absolutely stunning right? I’m currently trying to convince Hannah to let me buy a new tv as I’m hooked on Oled after buying the switch 😂
@@mike.barnes lol reading you guys makes me excited, the last console I had was a gamecube, I will try playing on console again because i wanted to play Breath of the Wild.
Yeah you're spot on, I bought myself an OLED Switch when it came out and managed to sell my old one for a decent price so it wasn't even too dear for me. Used Switches are everywhere. Hope you're enjoying Tears of the Kingdom, I know I am. As someone who plays exclusively in handheld mode, the OLED was a great purchase.
Niiiice man! That’s it, seems like if you’re buying used and selling an Oled model you and infact upgrade for pretty cheap! How are you finding TOTK so far??
@@mike.barnes It's fantastic. Distractions for days in every direction. I feel like it will probably be one of the best value for money games out there with how much content it seems to have.
The switch for me personally is a great little toy. Simple, quick and fun. All i can say is thank you Nntendo for bringing us a great little product at an affordable price. Good stuff.
I bought a Switch OLED in January 2021 and played daily a variety of Nintendo games. After watching your Steam deck reviews I took the plunge and LOVED it, played every day while my Switch looked on sadly in its dock! However BOTW is still probably my favourite game of all time so of course I’m now back on my switch for ToTK. I’m lucky, as I’m able to have both a Switch & a Steam Deck but totally agree with you sometimes the ability to just plug & play is a big draw for me.
Oh no way! That's great to hear. So glad you're enjoying your steam deck bud.😄 But I totally agree, play my steam deck all the time but the switch still hits a spot that the deck just cant. I feel exactly the same, incredibly fortunate that I'm able to afford both! Thank you for the kind comment 😊
I bought a used Oled switch this year after I had a serious injury. I couldn't walk for 6 months and therefore I had to keep myself busy somehow. The first thing I bought was Super Mario Bros and Mario Kart. Playing these games was just chill and fun. When totk was released I couldn't stop playing for a couple of months. I would even say it's the best game i've ever played. The game had me hooked! Recently I enjoy playing mario bros and overcooked with my girlfriend. My switch was probably the best purchase 2023. I could relate with all of your points.
Bro solid video, I always wanted to pick up a Switch since the 2017 launch, I played a bit of Zelda Breath of the Wild and knew it’s a game that needs to be played, the sense of adventure was amazing, I have been a PlayStation gamer with PS4 and then PS5, playing Zelda Tears of the Kingdom at a friends place made me finally pull the trigger, got the Switch OLED and man it’s such a good console! The handheld screen is so colorful and vibrant, having a blast playing both docked and handheld, really enjoying playing Zelda And Super Mario Odyssey, so happy with my Switch purchase 😊
I'm in the same boat as you, PS5, Steam Deck and a gaming PC, but I just bought a barely used OLED for 350€ or 300 GBP. The bundle included 7 games, a memory card and a pro controller. Highly recommend looking at the used market.
Having switch joycon is one of the best thing for me, since my father has only one arm working, he can play with family. It is small, comfortable and has gyro which most game support.
Ghaaaaad damn! You're making me want to upgrade my switch!! 😭 And you through in some deep cuts screen shaming the deck boiz, I barely held back the tears. Great to see some more Mikey B content. Keep iy it up. Maybe do some streaming again some time some 👍
Hahaha sorry man! It honestly does feel like more of an upgrade than I excepted. That screen is sooo clean. And sorry for the steam deck shade, I still love it I promise 🥲 Thanks so much man, so appreciate you coming back. Yesss would love to stream again soon. I think I’m going to stream Final fantasy 16 when it’s out 👀👀👀
Switch is an awesome companion to PC gaming even with having a steam deck. They are different entities and Switch has a certain charm to it. My wife loves her Switch as well and it is awesome to have something a bit more casual for your significant other to enjoy when they don't want to be bothered with the fuss of PC gaming. Great video! Also Totk is oh so good!
I'm 39. I'll always own the "latest" Nintendo console. Why? They have a proven track record of delivering QUALITY games for ALL AGES. Also the only place I can find my "little kid nostalgia" from Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Maro Kart, Super Smash Bros, Splatoon 3 (didn't play the 1st or 2nd but OMG THIS IS ADDICTIVE AF AND COMPETITIVE!), etc.
My kids just got me a Switch for Father's Day/My Birthday (same day this year). It's not an OLED, but I'm still loving it. It was really thoughtful and since they all have the same console (I have six kids...well, adult children) I can join some of the family gaming sessions (which have been somewhat limited to Jackbox Games, another life-saver during the pandemic)
TOTK made me cave and re-buy a Switch! Couldn’t agree more about emulation right now, I’ve lost so many evenings trying to get stuff to work only to keep running into issues after!
That game series has a lot of power over people right? 😂 That’s exactly it! I totally admire people that do it, but between 3 jobs I just don’t have the time and energy to deal with switch emulation
@@mike.barnes Definitely! I may have to give it another shot! I 100% Dread before I got rid of my original OLED. Highly recommend that one if you’re going to look at the Switch library.
I've had the OG Switch since launch and had an absolute blast on BOTW and loads of other games. I've had TOTK on pre-order for 4 years now and decided to go ahead and get the OLED, really just to play TOTK, but also do a refresher on older games afterwards to experience them in all their lovely OLED glory. Added benefit, I can donate my OG to my young daughter, and with a 2nd copy of Animal Crossing, we can play together :)
I bought my first console (switch oled) this year in March because I've never had one and I also got it to play Animal Crossing. Truly a unique experience.
I bought it just a month ago, December, as a gift for myself. at first I kinda regret it when I was playing solo, especially i bought it brand new. But when my niece and nephews and me got together and also my friends to play smash bros ultimate, that's when I felt that it was worth it. planning to get more local multiplayer games in the future as well, like mario party and mario kart.
i recently picked up a used OLED last week for the same reasons! used to have a regular model in 2019, it didn't really grab me. i think now the difference is that beautiful screen, the now bigger game lineup and finding out i can just use nice comfy third-party joycon :)
I'm still want to upgrade my Switch Lite to Switch OLED in coming months ❤. Already used Switch Lite more than 1,000 hours playing Fortnite, TOTK, BOTW, Hogwarts Legacy, Dragon Dogma Dark Arisen, Final Fantasy 12 Zodiac Age, Mortal Kombat 11 ❤
Picked up the Tears OLED Switch mostly because it’s beautiful but also a nice little upgrade on that stunning screen. My old switch was bought on release so a worthy upgrade. Having said that I’m unlikely to play handheld too often. Also did the same for Wind Waker HD, got the Wii U solely for it and I think I have only a couple of other games for that console.
@@mike.barnes I’m loving it, not very far in yet but the new mechanics are great fun. My big regret is not buying that special edition copy of Wind Waker HD with the Ganondorf statue, that was a very cool special edition.
Dam if you not gonna use it in handheld then that was lowkey a waste of money since the only other upgrade you're getting is battery life since you said you got your switch on release.
Got My Oled Tears of the Kingdom edition as a birthday present from my gf on the 3rd of June and well After 25 days I’m in my 50th hour in Totk,I never played BoW and I think ToTk it’s one of the most fun games i’ve played in the last 4 years.
It feels weird looking back, but the Switch with Animal Crossing definitely helped keep me sane through Lockdown. I’ve just got an Oled Switch as the battery failed in my original. Really enjoying Octopath Traveller 2 and Tears of the Kingdom.
I avoided the switch for all these years. Why did I need one with the multiple other much more powerful gaming machines sitting around already? Bought one for my kids this xmas along with mario kart and wonder. I was wrong this whole time, switch absolutely slaps and puts legitimate joy back into games, rather than the grindy engagement based chores you'll find on other platforms.
Great vid! I almost got an OLED one, my launch switch was making weird noises 😅. But luckily together with a friend I replaced the fan and it’s doing great now with totk! Enjoy the game, been loving it so far!
@@mike.barnes doing great! Having so much fun! Only did 1 of the region missions and other than that just have been exploring. Did you already start playing :)?

I love the OLED and I also have the lite. I have gone through nearly all switches since launch. I currently use the Tears of the kingdom OLED and it just looks beautiful! Love the design on the dock. I always buy my switches from the official Nintendo store
Im thinking about getting the oled or the lite. I only play handheld so im afraid the oled wont be comfortable. But im also afraid the screen of the lite will be too small. What would u recommend?😊😅
@@mayapapaya8343 so the lite is for sure more comfortable than OLED I get stuck as I like the OLED so I can play on the tv but I love the lite for its comfortable use and design. The battery life is small but I don’t have a lot
I used to own the original switch but sold it years ago. Had played breath of the wild on it. I honestly thought there would be a switch pro coming out with the new Zelda game this year. But ended up getting the totk oled edition instead. Woulda been smart to do a pro but the oled has been a wonderful upgrade to what I’m used to:) and this edition looks beautiful!
I traded in my original Switch for an OLED primarily for ToTK. I *may* have played it via emulation on my gaming PC and SD already but like you, I’m over all that faffing around and am amazed how well it runs on the Switch so far
Yeah man, it just seems like such a messy situation atm. Just wanna play Zelda without a tonne of hassle. Totally! Given how massive the map is I’m STUNNED the switch can pull it off. The developers must have done some serious magic to make it possible
Same boat here. I bought a switch lite a few months after it came out because i didnt think the switch pro would be coming out. Then i held off on the OLED for like 6 months waiting for a switch Pro 🤣 but trading up makes it not much of a big deal. No doubt ill trade up the OLED for switch 2 when it releases 🤔
@Mike Barnes for sure. And I get you on the simple nature of the switch just working. I've got a steam deck and a high end PC but recently I've had such great fun just playing Breath of The Wild and Pokemon Scarlet not worrying about FPS and tinkering with settings.
I had one with me on deployment, the screen was superb. However, once I found out about the Steam Deck, I sold my Switch OLED and haven't looked back. Zelda and Animal Crossing just were not my thing. Happy to see others enjoy it though, I just enjoy having my PC library on the go.
I almost picked up a steam deck since I have a huge back log of games to play. But after seeing the average Battery life of steam deck vs switch, I decided to go with switch. Also BotW. 😊
I 100% agree with this. I love Nintendo because of how family friendly it is. From controls to UI it makes it so accessible to people. Also I'm a huge fan of botw and playing totk as of recent has me hooked!!! I'm so excited to discover new things in that game. Steam deck is great, especially to play games that couldn't make it in the switch. Though otherwise the switch is just so comfy to me. Soon I will go travel and between carrying my clunky steam deck vs my small switch lite, the choice is pretty easy for space. Anyways loved to hear your thoughts on this!
Hey Katherine! Thank you so much for coming back 😄 100% with you. It’s by far the most chill, easy, accessible console out there. Amazing! How are you finding TOTK so far? I’m unbelievably excited to start playing. Also totally agree. If I had to pick one I’d go with steam deck but the switch fills this gap. Smaller, cheaper, easier to use, great battery life, great first party games…I love it! Thank you so much for the continued kind comments 😊
I am loving the new Zelda, currently with 90 hrs and still just made one of the four main quests, what a trully incredible game! I am sure a lot of people will buy the switch just to play it just like me in 2019 to play Breath of the wild, those 350 hrs were really a great time.
@@mike.barnes I'm absolutely loving the game so far! It's super fun and I've been enjoying every minute of it. I've already spent 105 hours playing and there are still so many areas I haven't explored yet. I'm really excited to see what else the game has in store for me!
I just bought one too, it's my third switch. My first was the launch model and sold for profit because it was soft-mod compatible. I bought another one which is the Animal Crossing Limited during the pandemic and not long ago I gave it to my brother.
I am the same as you. As much as I have tons of games emulate on my steamdeck, there are certain game such as ToTK that I rather play on the Switch. At least for the first time. I can’t be bothered to tweak it, not now.
Totally! I admire people that get it running, but the idea of spending hours getting it working when I work full time is just stress I can really do without haha
What an absolute surprise! This man right here is capable of teaching you how to make your first lo-fi hip hop song while making this joyful entertaining video, I had a blast with both things professor Mike, I hope more people get to know you. PS: I just bought the same model past sunday, can we become friends?
No waaaay! 😂 You’re on Skillshare? What a small world ehy? I actually started RU-vid with the mind to do a music channel but it’s shifted a little if you could tell 😂 Thank you so much for the kind comment. And yes we can become friends 😄
I literally just bought one, and after taxes here in the states, it ran me a cool $381. Barf, but, I am obsessed! I was never a gamer, and it was definitely Zelda Breath of the wild that called me in, and I am literally up until 6am every night. LOVE it so much! No regrets, and amazing game play. I even bought the Lite first, and then decided to get the OLED. The difference is insane, and worth every penny!
I bought a Nintendo Switch to play local multiplayer games with friends & family as well as play both the Zelda games for the first time. Playing this console in handheld mode is my favourite thing to do, feet up with a cup of tea. 🙂
I think Nintendo's best move for a potential hardware upgrade would be a "pro" dock that houses a GPU. Yes it means you only get that power boost on a TV, but hey, you can't win em all.
I think you got all the reasons right why the switch is successful and does separate itself in the ps5 pc and steam deck. Since I believe the switch is very casual friendly and family friendly compared to the others and is why it's successful as a console. I believe a lot if not most switch owners doesn't care much about frame rates. Unless you use homebrews I guess....
One thing to also consider when it comes to emulation support is that WE NEED people to buy new games they enjoy. That’s how we keep getting them. If more and more people begin emulating great new games, it will cut into company profits and May impact future games. Buy your games, folks.
switch emulation is still not in a stage where it can replace a switch console in most popular "nintendo exclusive" titles. I used to emulate here and there but never got the satisfaction nor the performance i get when playing on a real switch.Maybe thats just me but I don't think that it will cause the death of switch or something
I'm sure you've heard but look up the Nitro Deck; a pretty amazing looking grip coming out for the switch with no stick drift, direct controller input through usb-c (so no input latency).
You can have whatever system as powerful as it can be but when it comes to pure gameplay and creativity, Nintendo trump's them all and in a cellphone chip no less.
Just bought the Zelda Oled one and I’m still waiting for the games to come. But just Minecraft, a game I’ve played for years on computer, feels like a whole new experience.
I think you hit every nail on the head. Yeah, it's underpowered - but Nintendo games, for the most part (no, Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, you go and stand in the corner and think about what you've done!) run really well on it. It's like you said, it's no-faff gaming, and anyone can pick up and play. I already have a switch, and I JUST bought the new Zelda special edition OLED one. It was the ultimate in needless, frivolous purchases, and I don't regret it for one single second. Sometimes I just sit and look at it. Look at it..... Ahem. I have a steamdeck too, and while I really like it, it's not the no-faff of the Switch. It's by far the closest thing to it that there is on the PC side, but there's still a level of technical jank that's just not there on the switch. Now, excuse me as I wade through anime girl dodgy websites to figure out how to emulate definitely-not-nintendo-stuff-no-sir on my steamdeck.
My wife gifted me the TotK OLED for my birthday last week. Its nice, the screen is more vibrant and theres a clear difference in battery life. No other major differences but if i had to pick between OLED or the base switch, im picking OLED. Im mostly using it for Animal Crossing. I still cant bring myself to pay $70 for a switch game.
@@baitreview It's not like Nintendo will have a massive hit to their bottom line if some yuzu users pirate. They get enough money from bogus copyright strikes and Garry Bowser.
I bought one in 2023 to play BOTW and TOTK. I can’t wait to play all the other exclusives. I haven’t had a nintendo since Wii and wasn’t exactly all in on that console.
Absolutely love the OLED screen on the Switch OLED. To be fair, the Steam Deck screen IS much better than the original Switch screen from 2017, but pales in comparison to the OLED. Why Valve didn't include an even more premium Steam Deck option (and I have the $650 model) with reduced bezels and a nice, large OLED display is beyond me. I would have bought it in an instant. I love both the Switch OLED and the Steam Deck. I don't even care about more power for a future Steam Deck... for me wahtever upgrades they do MUST have an OLED screen as a premium option.
I could not agree more. The base switch has a noticeably more dull, fuzzy screen to my eyes. And yes steam deck 2 NEEDS a OLED screen. I would take that over a 1080p 120hz display any day. Lets pray we get it one day!
@mike.barnes Agreed. I don't understand why most are wondering about a 1080p or even a 4K screen for a Steak Deck 2 or the next Switch. They can both be 720p OLED for all I care- and prefer that, why push the screen resolution so high when 720p 60 hz OLED is a perfect medium (those needing 120hz aren't going to be playing on a handheld anyway) - boost the graphics power to fully support most games at high/ultra at 720p before even considering 1080p. Same for Switch 2.
Love my steam deck for its power but to be honest, it’s quite geeky. If got a very busy job and most of the time if I want to game it feels more effort in the deck than the switch. I just want to unwind for a bit on something
The switch is definitely more casual right? I have to admit, it’s quite nice playing games without having to tweak settings to get things running right
guys i literally bought one yesterday and i find myself sitting here justifying it but at the end of the day, i have a pc to play intense games, and realistically who’s tryna play comp on a handheld? This thing is awesome!
Hey man i just stumbled across your channel and wanted to let you know that your video style here is amazing! i really love the quality and production! keep up the good work!
I bought a used Switch OLED last month to play with my nieces and nephews and I was able to find used versions of fun titles (Animal Crossing, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros, Overcooked) easily. While I haven't pulled the trigger on a digital only game yet, I've noticed the Nintendo store has good titles on sale from time to time. I am hooked on Animal Crossing.
I traded in my original Switch for an OLED primarily for ToTK. I may have played it via emulation on my gaming PC and SD already but like you, I'm over all that faffing around and am amazed how well it runs on the Switch so far
Agree with everything you said there. As a middle aged man who's always been into gaming from the age of about 7, Nintendo and specifically the Switch is one hell of an amazing console. I'd take it over any other console including the steam deck.
I originally and still want a steam deck Oled but because i live in Australia they are difficult to obtain and are between $1300 - $1500. I decided to but a switch lite second hand which i think is great, but reading text on it is a nightmare. I then bought a second hand first geberation switch which i also thought was great, but again screen a bit to small abd i actually found the lite to have a bit more vibrancy in the screen. I sold the switch first generation for more than i bought it for. Just yesterday i got my hands on a second hand but basically brand new Oled switch. Loving it in hand held mode, lokks nuch better and clearer and the slighty larger display makes a world of difference. Plus the white stand and joycon colour looks very nice sitting next to my ps5.
Finally got a switch Oled a few weeks ago since I’ve been wanting to play botw for a while . Seeing totk gameplay footage a few weeks ago is what pushed me though . Loving botw and fire emblem , also house of the dead for nostalgia . I can’t wait to play totk but there’s so many more games I realized I’ve been missing out on since I haven’t owned a Nintendo console since game cube (been on pc ) . Im loving the switch so much and I play it handheld way more than I thought I would
I bought one just to play zelda breath of the wild back in 2020 since i loved it so much on my wiiU in 2017, but now I love all the Nintendo exclusives anything outside of nintendo made games you might as well play on a console A lot of them are mobile versions of the games or just simply don’t look as good or run as good you cant blame it for the hardware it has, we need the switch 2 soon.
