I can 100% understand and relate to your purchase! Today I pulled the trigger on the Epson 4010 from Crutchfield and I made my decision on Epson again because I currently use the Epson EMP-TW1000 from way back in 2007 and let me tell you for a 15 year old 1080p projector this thing blows me away with the brightness and image quality. It almost seems once an Epson, always an Epson. A year ago I bought a BenQ HT3550 and immediately returned it. The brightness was horrendous and my grandpa Epson continued to be my primary projector until today. I’m excited
Epson can make damn good projector. I have no regrets even with the fact that it’s second hand and I honestly rarely buy used products. I do buy refurbished quite often though.
@@Upscaled_HT it really hurt my heart to just give them $2,000 cash just to buy brand new when I could have just as easily gotten the same projector for half that on EBay. I just wanted to treat myself this time. Plus a lot of them on EBay strangely doesn’t come with a remote. I wonder why?
I did the same 2 years ago this month. 6050 with 2 brand new bulbs and the bulb in it had only 500 hours. I purchased for $2700. The 6050 has a beautiful picture and I love the black. Make sure you upgrade the firmware. I'm very happy with the picture on my 120" dedicated home theater.
Wow where did you guys buy it for those prices? Safe and sound is the cheapest I could find and those are refurb units for 2800 and do NOT come with the extra bulb
As long as 3D projectors still exist, I can understand your choice. I also like 3D, I have nearly 130 3D movies, and since I decided to change my projector I've also been asking myself the question of 3D or not. And that's when I realized that it had been over a year since I'd watched a single 3D movie, and that I didn't miss it at all. I ended up choosing between depriving myself of an excellent modern projector that doesn't have 3D like the LS12000 and being able to watch a 3D movie every 6 months that I know by heart. Personally, I can't stand those glasses that destroy brightness and contrast. I don't think Epson made a mistake, they're not going to keep investing in 3D just for a new Avatar every 10 years. 😉 Having said that, your home cinema is magnificent, well done! 👏
I guess I wanted to maintain the capability without spending JVC money. I think I have yet to see a whole 3d movie in the theater. I saw part avatar of the way of water and it looked awesome so maintaining 3d in the theater feels right for me.
If you want to continue enjoying 3D, you've made the right choice. I've treasured an old Samsung 55-inch TV, which has excellent 3D, in case of a craving crisis. 😂
Totally agree with you with the Epson 6050UB (EH-TW9400 in Asia). Bought it for for 4K and 3D, projected on a 100 inch screen. Have it for a year now. Image is sharp for a shifter (in Bright Cinema Mode). Love it!👍
I'm 100% with you on the 3d thing. If I'm spending that much on a projector it better be able to play my 3d discs. I'm a huge Epson fan, but no 3d is a deal breaker.
@@sonicchill1 The screen plays a big role but the projector can help with black levels with the auto iris. A quality projector will give a good experience in less than ideal conditions. In addition, you keep you room as dark as possible (dark paint etc.).
@@Upscaled_HT My first EPSON I bought in 2012 (model number escapes me), had 3d and I used it a lot in the beginning until all the content dried up. (3NET). I replaced it with the home cinema 4010 which also had it but in the 3+ years I had it, I never used it. It seems you have the best of everything, keeping the brightness and 3D.
When you get this set up for full screen viewing, I am curious about jitters in moving scenes or screen door effect issues when not in motion smoothing type modes.
A laser TV or laser projector is disposable after about 20,000 hours (800-1000 hours for me per year) the brightness has decreased by around 50% and after 10,000 hours by around 25% and who then buys your laser projector nobody, but if you buy a lamp projector you simply buy the lamp (only 10 minutes work without the module) replace it with a new one and the projector works as on the first day and you can also sell it, but you always get stuck with a laser-based model, that's a fact or you have a connection and the manufacturer can give you the Laser unit for/to exchange
I understand your decision, but personally, I would have went with the LS12000. I have a decent amount of 3D movies that I can rip to my NAS, and 3D glasses. I honestly can't remember the last time I watched a 3D movie on my 5050. For 2k more, the laser light engine, better resolution, 4k 120hz, reduced fan noise, and Dynamic mode which allows for full laster dimming make it worth it. The fan noise of bulb projectors along with dimming bulbs bothers me. That takes the much more expensive NP5 out of the mix. Sony 5000ES is now the same price as the LS12000. Great projector but the Epson edges it out with motorized lens, less digital picture, and the Epson is brighter. So yeah, weighing all the options as well. Ultimately get what works best for you!
I totally agree with you, I can understand those who have a very good 3D projector and want to keep it, but it's a real shame to deprive yourself of a modern, high-performance projector like the LS12000 just because it doesn't do 3D. To each his own!
The 50/50 UB actually in testing has better brightness and better black levels contrast then the 11,000 LS projector plus once the laser goes wacky it's considered a paper weight
It's a great projector. I recommend using a hdfury vertex (custom settings) with it so you can use low latency Dolby vision if you use a Sony or Panasonic Dolby vision uhd player.
I really like your statement of not wanting to spend so much on electrical equipment 😊. Just like you I considered Sony or JVC, but price for image quality wasn't there. So I got the LG HU810PW. It has 2 lasers and although it's a DLP the contrast and black level was easily rectified with a gray negative gain screen. It's a 4k projector and it's extremely crisp 👍. I totally agree with you about return on investment! I tried the JVC and Sony compared to my LG and the only thing my LG lacked was black level performance vs the big dogs.
When you can buy a nice used car for the price of a projector, you’ve spent too much unless you’re filthy rich. I don’t care how much you value image quality, it’s crazy. I think you made the right choice for sure.
The 6050 cannot perform dynamic tone mapping, it can only handle static mapping using HDR metadata. Some titles will look good on one setting but other will require manual adjustments. I've been happy with mine over the past few years but it's now on sale and being replaced with a JVC NZ7. I totally agree with your decision. Epson should have found a way to keep 3D support with the LS12000. If they had, I would gladly have bought that instead.
I know that it doesn’t tone map dynamically but I’m willing to wait until it becomes a more standard feature instead of ponying up extra money now for it.
Thanks for the vid. I'm considering the 6050 for very similar reasons. However, the throw would be 11 feet from projector to screen. Is that too short for this unit?
It would depend on how big you need project the image. Looks like you can go up to 112 inches big. Check out the projector central throw calculator. www.projectorcentral.com/Epson-Pro_Cinema_6050UB-projection-calculator-pro.htm#calc
I enjoyed your practical appraisal of the current theater projector market and I agree with your choice. I also condemn Epson's decision to abandon 3D along with a portion of their loyal customer enthusiasts.
Thanks for the video. I'm thinking of getting a new projector and after doing a lot of research, this Epson is the one that attracts me the most. I'm just wondering how the input lag is. Does anyone have any detailed info about this? I have been going through a lot of reviews, but no review for this model I've seen goes into the details of input lag. I would like to have a projector that I can use both for cinema and gaming, so input lag does play a role. I bought a gaming DLP projector about a year ago, but am quite disappointed with it, so much actually that I don't want to use it. It uses a 0.47" 1080p native DMD and employs XPR for true 4K. The screen door effect is pretty terrible at 1080p when XPR is turned off. It's not pleasant for me to look at. It does get a bit better when XPR is turned on, however it can only go up to 60 Hz when feeding it with a 4K signal, and this increases the input lag to around 16.6 ms instead of the 4.5 ms or so at 1080p 240Hz. I don't see the rainbow effect too much from the RGBW color cycling, however it rather makes me nauseous when looking at the image any more than 20 minutes or so. The "black level" is also quite bad. The terrible screen door effect along with the color cycling technology makes me want to go for a 3LCD chip projector instead. The Sony SXRD projectors and the JVCs are probably much better in this regard, but they are way too expensive and not worth the money in my opinion, especially considering the irreversible LCoS degradation that happens to all SXRD projectors after 500 hours of use or so. So I'm now instead looking at Epson's lineup of 3LCD chip projectors. According to reviews, some of their lower-end models don't have very great black levels, and that makes the image lose contrast and look washed out. Some other models like the LS11000 seem to have quite high input lag at all video modes, making it unsuitable for gaming. Also, those newer high-end models are outside my budget. The 6050UB (EH-TW9400 here in Europe) still cost a bit of money, but it could perhaps be worth it if it lives up to what I'm looking for. The "UB" stands for Ultra Black, which is very appealing to me. Also, being a 3LCD projector, I'm hoping that it displays a more smooth image compared to the pixelated look of DLP projectors. The LCD technology typically has more motion blur than DLP, but I don't mind that too much. I much prefer that than all the downsides of DLP. The only question for me now is the input lag. Is the input lag as bad on the 6050UB as it is on some other Epson models? Anyone who has tried to use the 6050UB for gaming and could provide me with some feedback on this?
What a coincidence. I just received tw9400 which is the European equivalent of 6050ub. Congratulation on the new projector. It is definitely not a mistake and good luck with the new theatre. I am also a huge fan of 3D, actually, my degree is in stereoscopy. The main reason to buy that model is the 3D option. It may be one of the last high-quality consumer 3D projectors out there. It is a shame that Epson is no longer a 3D supporter. However, I have one question, since my projector came without 3D glasses and Epson refuses to provide any glasses, /with the response "no one is interested in 3D. That format is Dead"/ do you have any recommendations for compatible 3D glasses for that projector?
What a great field to be in! I enjoy the occasional 3d movie and wasn’t prepared to give that up. As for 3d glasses, it appears the Epson ELPGS03 ones work with the 6050ub, which happen to be the same ones that came with my 5030UB (epson.com/Accessories/Projector-Accessories/Epson-3D-Glasses-(RF)-ELPGS03/p/V12H548006). I’ll be keeping the two pairs that I own.
Apparently any RF 3d glasses will work. People are reporting that these work with the 5050ub which means they’ll work with 6050. amzn.to/3Jt6Nj3. amzn.to/3Jt73P3
@@Upscaled_HT Thank you very much for the advice. I already ordered them. Both models. Just to be sure that in the next 10-15 years I will be able to watch 3D movies.
I did the same thing...can't get myself to spend stupid money on a laser projector that will become an expensive paper weight in a few years...The Epson 6050 is a really nice bright projector...bought mine at safe and sound electronics.
Hey man, got my ub6050 in last September for 2499€. We had Acer DLP before.. Didn't buy a different projector cause the better ones cost double - two and a half time the price of the 6050/TW9400 (which are 1.xw5000es: 6000€ and technical problems maybe still not be solved 2.ls12000: hasn't got better blacks than mine/ours.., 3.JVC NP5: ~7000€)..just no! Our projector is "quiet good" only lacking a bit deeper black floor and a bit Resolution (enhancement, detail level, sharpness which you can crank up in the menu to compensate a bit!) to make it good, really. Don't hesitate to ask if you got any questions. Congratulations and have fun with the Epson🎥🍿
I love your channel. I subd when you were reviewing TrueHD Atmos on Xbox and source media like ur Zappiti. I agree with most of your opinions and choices. I have an epson pj and plan to try a used JVC at some time in the future. Want to use lldv with a Zidoo and my old epson is SDR 1080. I like your new AVM70 8k but did not agree when you set your speakers to full / flat rolloff in arc. Keep up the great theater content. Looking forward to seeing videos about your new theater and some subwoofer/ amp/ MiniDSP vids.
Thanks for subscribing. I have a lot cool things that are going to keep me busy while. I have a lot videos planned but not enough time to edit and shoot everything. The whole full time job gets in the way. Hoping to move to the new house in late May. I understand the point of view of some folks with crossing over towers. Definitive says set the time to large and I have measured them to produce a lot of output up to 30hz. I may cross them over in the new theater and see how I like it. I guess my thought is why have a “full range” speaker and treat it like a bookshelf.
Great Projector. Just bought this on Safe and Sound for a great price. This project is not overly priced until Samsung Wall TVs will be affordable to the general public and these Wall TVs will make project obsolete in the future. Thanks for the recommendation.
I understand your love of 3d but personally if you are going to build a new theater from ground up I would definitely put one of the best projectors available on the market in.
Love the brown seating along with the rest of your color choices. You got a great deal on your projector. I owned the 6050 prior to my JVC NX7. The 6050 gives you about 80% of the performance of the NX7. Great value proposition.
I love the colors too! Although, it’s not the best color choices for a projector setup. I’ll be going much darker in the new theater and I’ll be getting some black chairs as well. I looked at a used nx7 but they were hovering at around $5000, which was too close to the cost of a new np5.
@@Upscaled_HT there’s a dealer on AVS forums that have a clearance sale for both NX7 and NX9. I think it’s $5499 and $8999. I am thinking about it cause I got a NX5 from Best Buy for $3200 this past summer and I was wowed but I don’t know how much better the NX7 is. I’m still debating on what processor to use 😅
That's a tough one. If the manual lens shift, focus, and zoom don't bother you, I would consider the Sony. I was close to pulling the trigger on the Sony when I saw it on sale for $5,500.
@@Upscaled_HT yeah it is still for sale at that price online. A couple of local dealers can do it for $5K. I am also considering building an HTPC to run Madvr. Do you think it is worth building one?
@@percybedford6266 do you mean a Madvr build that basically does the same as the Envy? From what I have seen, it’s complicated and you need very specific parts. Personally, it’s a lot easy to just adjust the hdr tone mapping slider a little if your picture is blown out. Maybe in a generation or 2 of projectors they will have frame by frame tone mapping as standard.
@@percybedford6266 or you could try hdfury First. It‘s a much simpler plug and Play solution and will be mich Cheaper also. Running an arcana with htpc and amzn fire tv Stick 4K Max. Tone Mapping and Dolby Vision Works really Well!
I agree with you on the 3d. I don't watch them too often but I have 50-60 3d blurays and enjoy them when I do watch them. The problem now is my Epson 3010 stopped working after about 10 yrs of service and I replaced it with an Epson 2250 because it is still 3d capable but my old 3d glasses don't work with the new projector. Some online research is looking like I need RF/bluetooth style glasses opposed to the old IR style. Unfortunately Epson has discontinued all of their 3d glasses. Come on Epson, they should at least offer the glasses for those of us that still need them! Ps.. nice projector!
