Yeah I was just messin'. I'm not worried about this being my A or B cam. I can see it being a great B cam for those who already have great A cams. I'll get there one day lol
Lol don’t feel bad You me and the rest of the world this is a A camera for sure lol Took me 6 months just to convince my self I needed. $3000 camera when I have a $1200 phone I only text and watch RU-vid on lol
On the brink - the main thing that leads me towards the A7Siii is the 4K 120p. Similarly, the thing that leads me towards the A7iv is the ability to crop in. A good few points you made in this video actually - focus mapping also could be v useful and sensor cover as well which the A7Siii does not have.
Hi Jason, You really helped me make my mind up with the purchase of the A7 IV. You brilliantly put it in layman terms so I could understand it a bit. I am now okay with the cropped mode on the A7 IV. After watching your video, I sat down and really thought about when I use slow motion and I figured I most often use it when I focus on the face for that romantic look or that dramatic gaze. That said, the 1.5 crop is perfect for these kinds of shots. You are brilliant and answered all my questions I ever had about the A7SIII and the FX3 vs the A7IV. I am definitely getting the A7 IV. Thank you for your hard work in making this...sincerely, craig
The good part about the 33mpx sensor is not only you can use APS-C lenses. You also have 2 Focal lengths with one lens (Accept for 4k60). When I get a 1.) 35mm 1.4 -> it's a 35mm (FF) + a ~50mm (s35 translated) lens. 2.) 50mm 1.4 -> is a 50mm (FF) + a ~75mm (s35) lens. and so on. And you still keep the full 4K resolution which isn't possible with a a7siii or FX6. 4k60 might annoy but with a 35mm I have a wider lens in FF and a nifty 50 not too close lens. Of cause when I have a Zoom like 24-70 2.8 I'm more flexible, but now I'm also more flexible with prime lenses. What do you think? Is that idea clear? If you would have the choice would you get a 24-70 2.8 or a 35mm 1.4 as the 1st lens (for video) with the a7iv?
We still have clear image zoom even in 4k 60 crop which will give us an extra 1.5x on top. so even a larger focal length. Depending on what you want to film will determine the lens. Do you need a wider field of view where the 24mm will be enough. Also with price you could get the 35mm and another lens for similar price to the 24-70GM
Jason what is your tought on the lack of Sony Firmware Updates ? Kinda feeling stupid investing in Sony as a videographer anymore, canon for example are updating the **** out of their cameras ?! Cant get over the fact that A1 or A7S3 dont have Focus Maping or Focus breathing and the sony A7IV has. Want new featueres, pay up ?!
Loving the sony A7iv, but does anyone know what focus setting to use when I have multiple talking heads and want to show case an item? Camera keeps focus on the talking heads and not the item in front of the lens? Thanks
a7IV is a must upgrade for me as I do need a video camera that can do 10-bit, 4K/60fps and have the S-cinetone. Since i do team up with friends and families for video shoots, majority of them have a7Siii or FX3 and I am behind. I need to be on the same ground as they are and not to mention, have that amazing video-autofocus feature for run-n-gun situation. A7IV is the hype and worth the upgrade.
Hey Jason quick question. I have 2 Sony a7iv’s to film live studio music sessions. My question is, i wanna buy another camera, should i get another a7iv or an fx3. I was thinking fx3 so i could also do other type of films and have a bit more versatility but didnt know how hard or easy it would be to match up with my a7iv’s. Plus the price point is so much more. Just was curious on your opinion.
Crop sensor lenses at F1.4 are cheaper than full frame because the true aperture you still have to multiply by the crop factor. So EF mount 1.4 is the equivalent of a 2.1 F lens
I just bought my very first camera, and went with the A7iv . I am a filmschool student and have mainly worked with the fx6 through my scho. However for a first camera the fx6 was a little out of budget for me. I had someone reccomend the ASiii, saying it's pretty much a compactor version of the fx6. But after some deliberating I decided to go with the A7 iv as it was more budget friendly (allowing me to spend it on other "accessories", such as gimbal, good quality mics etc. I also liked to have the option for better resolution stills.
@@figueroatraveladventures6463 Yes, I've still got a lot to learn as I haven't had a chance to practice as much as I would like so I'm still in the learning process a bit but despite that still able to get some really nice results.
I bought the FX3 to pair up with my A7C and ZV1. You brought up a really good point about using the apsc lens with the A74 with the high megapixel count and getting reduced somewhere what my A7C has normally. If I would’ve gave that some thought and what that means I probably would’ve considered the A74 maybe more…
I am definitely interested in the A7IV but I might pair it with an A7sIII for a nice combo. The APSC angle will be interesting to watch. The only problem I see is if you flush out your FF lens options for photography, then you will be purchasing extra APSC lenses just for video. But, I am sure there is a balance here. Great to have choices and the images I have seen form the camera do look rather amazing. Thanks for your video.
I've bought the camera after watching your video Jason. It's definitely a beast also my main camera. You have inspired and I'm looking to create more with the camera.
Heck I came from. Shootin' Galaxy 10 and a GoPro 9, stepped up to this for my YT. I am a professional eater but got into Vlogs and such as I get older. Sony A7iv is a big learnin' curve for me. Thanks for the video
Hi, congratulations for the very interesting video. I'd like to ask you a question. For me the stabilization of a camera is very important because I make all my documentaries around the world freehand, without tripods and without stadyshot. If I had to buy the Sony A7 IV and the Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS, could the two stabilizations, both of the camera and that of the lens, work together and in synergy? Do you think the Sony A7 IV with Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS might be the right camera for me or is it better that I look to another camera with better stabilization? Thank you very much
I have not tried the exact setup that you mentioned, but in my experience, you can only use the stabilisation from either the lens or the body, not both at the same time.
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema yeah I feel it might be - it’s just a lot of money for the lens, but good lenses never really go worthless, so that’s my reasoning :p
Hi Jason, out of curiosity: I only make documentaries in 4K 50p only freehand. I never use a tripod or gimbal. Do you think I can handle this SONY ALPHA 7 IV well or is it better to think of another camera like the Panasonic? Thank you
As I only record at home, is there any solid and bug free solution to connect this camera to record directly to a computer? I mean really solid solution, thank you.
Great vids 👌... is the rolling shutter in crop mode on the a7iv the same across all 4k frame rates? Have you had any issues with rolling shutter on this camera? Its the only thing putting me off.
I dont have any apsc lenses. Just one sony 20-70f4 I take video and pictures of family some time indoor and out door. Looking for cenimatic look in the video. So what camera you suggest. I have a7iii, now
Production work looks fun! I haven't done anything in years but would like to get back into independent stuff :) I pre-ordered the a7iv, I'm upgrading from the a7c -- I really want the extra MP for the pics but ALSO I love that it has Active Stable built in and no crop on 4k 30 which I use a lot for vlogging. I can't wait!
Only 2-channel sound. Cinema people don't care about in-camera sound recording. Only 120fps slow-motion. Focus-breathing comp is good. APSC crop is good for green screen.
I connected the HDMI port from my Sony A7 IV to a 4K TV, i see it well, everything all ok. But if I shoot myself eg. Vlog I have everything reversed on the TV screen. This it a big problem for me. I have to discover out how the 'mirror' + 'reverse' mode so that i can see the movements in the correct direction on the TV.
Maybe not clickbait…but possibly a topic or reasonably obvious enough that we didn’t need to know “why”? No hate here, I’m a subscriber…but anyone subbed to you likely knows about your FX6. Seems obvious to me that anyone with an FX6 would most likely choose a b cam with some different capabilities (33mp photos, crop mode, oversampled 4k) instead of buying another camera with the same sensor. In my opinion, if you own an a7siii, fx3 or FX6, your perfect second camera is the a7iv.
Thanks for this video, very informative! Any chance of you doing a video in 2024 of your thoughts on the A7IV now and whether you'd still buy it currently?
Great to hear that your company is working out :) I've been following your channel, from the start. As you know bro, I got the A7III and really enjoying it. I think early next year I will grab the MK IV :) Thanx for making the time to still pump out some vlogs, I look forward to your thoughts. When new camera's come out, your honesty about these products really help us out. Anyway all the best to you and the family.
I got the a7s3 about a month before I got my a 7iv and now I’m selling my a7s3. The only difference is the native iso and 240fps. Not sure if that worth the extra $1500. I gravitate to the a74 more just for ease of use. It’s an amazing camera.
@@ziggybasket yesterday it overheated shooting just 4k 24p 10bit but inside the car with windows up. Windows down it was fine but not sure what overheating setting I have it on.
Do you think that early 2022 there might be a high end Sony a6xxxx? Because there are many people who arent professionals or are just starting with freelance work and the Sony a7vi is too expensive. Fujifilm XT4 has 4k60fps 10 BIt for 1300€ so Sony should release a new camera. If they miss out now Panasonic gonna crush them with the GH6
I have been waiting for this camera and honestly it is time sony brought that high end APS-C camera out. I would say early 2022 or mid 2022. It may come with a price tag though I believe
Just buy a used GH5 if you're worried about price. A GH5 outside of lowlight and the annoying crop factor is very competitive with the A7SIII in terms of image quality.
@@ConnorLipke Was thinking about GH5 vs BMPCC 4k since i already have a V Mount cage setup, but the Blackmagic filesizes are so big that i dont know how much more expensive the storage would be. I will definitely wait until early 2022 to see if there is a GH6 coming and what other brands have in stock
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema The Gh5 is my favorite camera of all time, just difficult to vlog with. I recently sold my a7iii as it couldn't compare in image quality to my gh5, and picked up an a7siii. Really wish we didn't have to play this game of cat and mouse with camera companies to find what works best for our individual needs. If I didn't already have an a7siii, the A7IV would have probably been my first choice because of price.
Can you please tell I have a7iv as main cam, but thinking to buy another cam because need 120 4k which cam you suggest to buy fx3 or a7s3 and why? Thank you
Hi Jason,Sony A7iv is ultimately the camera body to buy despite the overheating issues,I have been shooting news gathering for so many years and with my A7iv work life became so much easier and hell better given the top video quality and the focus breathing speed plus of course many many pros of this hybrid.A++++
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Well, I mainly shoot 24p and the a7iv has 7K oversampled 4K24. What makes it slightly better as the one from a7Siii. So the a7iv should be the camera that I will use more than the a7Siii. That's more for slow motion then ;-)
Is it possible to desharpen the A74 to match the FX3? I've got the FX3 already, and I thought I'd use the A74 as a B-Cam every once in a while, depending on the shot list.
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema close but it’s a different formula for sensor. 34.1is the actual sensor size. Divide by crop factor squared. 34.1 / (1.5^2)=15.15
For me this would be my A cam until I progress further and then it’ll be my b cam, do you think this is a good camera to start out in the cinematography world ?
this video exactly what I was thinking about, I have a6500 with sigma primes and 3 zoom lenses and really want that 4k 60, but nobody NOBODY YET MAKE VIDEO with a7iv + apsc lenses , which should be the cheapest 4k60p on sony and huge possibilities - I wanna see a74+sel70350g in 4k 60p
I’m really agree with you and those are reasons that mentioned that I also wanted a7 iv so badly, I preordered it and couldn’t wait to have in my hand 😉👍🏽👍🏽
I bought it as a B-cam, and I'm using it more than my A7S3! Everyone taking about the rolling shutter, but it's actually not as bad as i thought. You really have to pan fast of something up close. Even if you do see it, it can be magically reversed in post. Looks exactly like the A7S3.
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema well on RF at the moment the widest you can go in FF is 14mm, can you achieve that on sony apsc mode without the vigneting getting in your way? (for video work)
@@deimees3828 Try 35 mm Focal length which is same as in Mobile phones now a days. Good enough for street photography , and Portrait as well. Good for indoors and out doors as well.
Some great alternative thoughts there mate! I've pre-ordered as an upgrade from my A7iii. It's a shame I sold my Sigma 16, APSC lens with my 6400, that could have been a good addition to the A7iv in crop.
Got my A7iv this month and already did last couple of videos on the channel using this beast! It is absolutely amazing! You get to the point when camera pushes you to grow to make better content and not other way round when you have to get all the juices from the camera to get a nice shot!
Isit true it overheats? Because I’m really keen on getting, or should I just spend a bit more and get the A7 Siii I do plan to do more videos than pics
@@4youreyez141 I have been shooting my last 10 videos on it, including 3 days in portugal with 4h+ of footage, all 4k 10bit 4:2:2 All-Intra. Never been throwing any overheating errors!
Just purchased the A7iv for the megapxl difference than the A7siii however I film a lot of weddings and still use A7siii for the ISO. Being able to go to 50,0000+ at night and dark rooms and still have exceptional quality is why I stick with it as an A cam. BUTTTT the A7iv is right there with it and I love the option of taking 33megapxl photos.
It's a tricky one. I can see myself potentially getting an fx6 so that would cover a lot of the dedicated video features. Just need a gimbal cam that can do short 4k 50p shots. A7s3 has been around quite a while now, so I feel it's probably due an update quite soon, so feels a bit late to be paying top dollar for one now.
Awesome stuff, dont compare this camera with the super sucker stupid fenomena handphone is iphone,if you compare with this handphone your expesive stuff become broken😂😂😂.
Thank you, great video, no doubt your opinion is always important to me and I agree with you when the a74 fits the nature of your work and you have a second camera as a backup, but for me and many others on a low income I see the exact opposite! I think you forgot the problem of overheating in the a74, because I already had a great camera, but I faced the problem of heat more than once despite setting the settings to high and others because my weather is very hot in the summer, so I sold it and bought the a7s3 because it is a camera that depends on it as is the case with my experience Fx3 I never had a problem with the heat with the two cameras, so I won't need a backup camera, I'm talking about an experience, thank you and your excellent channel ❤️
Thanks for the video - really helpful. We do a lot of conference filming and one thing I can't find the answer to is that if I use the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 motorized zoom with the A7iv, is there an option to use an external zoom rocker or anything with the camera to control the zoom for this and other servo zoom lenses? I know the Fx3 has a little rocker and the FX6 does too. Thanks!
Hi, just wondering, if you have a sony native aps-c lens on tat a7iv and you shoot in full-frame, would tat crop-in from the focus compensation be enough to use the lens as though you are in aps-c crop mode?
