Having owned both, I can say the Black Bay 54 is the superior product. Slimmer case, coin edge bezel, t-fit clasp, lollipop second hand, true vintage style. This watch goes full force on the ethos of what black bay wanted to be from the first release in 2012. I loved the 58, but it didn’t speak to me the way the 54 has. It is absolutely PERFECT. And this coming from a guy with a 7 inch wrist. Don’t let this video change your opinion, Black Bay 54 is the BEST Tudor release of the last 10 years. Hands down! 🙌
I got the 54 for my birthday last month, and I am absolutely in love with this watch. I have relatively thin wrists and it wears like a dream. And to be honest, I love the subtle elegance of the watch. The lack of minute indicies on the bezel, and the red triangle at 12 o'clock make it more discreet, and for a daily driver that's what I want.
Wow!! An actual alternative view point. I really appreciate you not echoing the view point of other RU-vid reviewers. The 58 is very special with its warm charm coming from the gilt bezel. I also love the elegant and refined matching coin edge bezel that matches the crown. It has a nice pop of color from the red Triangle that is also found on the classic Rolex Big Crown and it borrows design cues from Rolex/Tudors of past without being an exact replica. Also, at 39mm it sits comfortably on most wrists.
That's the amazing thing with Tudor, you have so many options to choose from and most of them are amazing. I also chose the BB58 over the 54, as I thought it had more character. The fit of the 54 was amazing, but I also thought it was a little bit too small and the dial felt a little too crowded compared to the 58. Amazing watch nonetheless!
Had the 58 since release and ordered nato later.Have just put it on for the summer having bought fancy tweezers. The tight silk weave and hardware gives it a whole new look and feel.None of the releases since the OG have sent me hotfoot to the AD but at least they are putting out pieces that can actually be bought.
As the owner of both…the BB54 is more sophisticated, classy and technically superior! Ultimately though it is down you. I am also 6”2 with 7 inch wrist, yet the 54 still looks proportionate on the wrist. If you can get your hands on a 54, go for it!!!
I recently got the Black Bay 58 GMT and absolutely love it, but after watching this video, I’m also really tempted to get the Black Bay 54, haha! I’m drawn to its simple aesthetics and the lollipop second hand. 🥰🥰
I got the 58 a few months before the 54 came out. At first I was spewing I didn't wait, until I went to see it in person. Reasons why I prefer the 58 over the 54: Gold bezel numbers matches the gold dial, red triangle, the seconds hand matches the hour (snowflake). I also don't like how the 54 has a lollipop yet still a snowflake hour, the missing 15minute markeres from 0-15, I also don't like the shiney dial as oppose to the matte of the 58. The only thing I prefer the 54 over the 58 is the clasp.
I'm hesitating between a BLACK BAY and a SEAMASTER 300M. But if I have to treat myself to a BLACK BAY it will be the BB54. Unlike you, I prefer the aesthetic of the BB54 without the red triangle and the shiny dial. I just wish they kept the gold numerals on the bezel. But apart from that, I find the BB54 more beautiful and more vintage. However, it would have been perfect in 39mm, without fake rivets and with a transparent case. Sincerely !
I picked the new red bezel Black Bay with jubilee bracelet over the 54. I tried them both on, side by side, and the 41mm was just nicer looking, and fit nicely with the jubilee. I went in wanting the 54 and left with the 41mm.
For me the 58 is a no brainer. The 54 loses some of the charm that the 58 has and it only really works for people with smaller wrists. I think the 58 works for most wrists
I get the Point With the Charakter. I own the 58 Bronze, and ordered the 54, its such a perfect watch. Fell in Love right away. Both Sites fit very good for me but the 54 ticked all the Boxes for a Clean black diver
Great video, good points, for myself, I am still going for the bb54 though.:) I love the simplicity, got the Ranger in january and for the same reason, its just so simple and pure, thats how I feel about bb54.
I think you should go and see both in person. I wanted the 54 until I saw and compared it to the 58 at my AD. I just liked the 58 so much more for whatever reason. I like small watches and I liked the dimensions of the 58 a lot more. If I would have not seen them in person I would have bought the 54 sight unseen. I usually don’t see a watch in person before I buy but now I’m considering seeing them in person from now on when possible. At the end of the day nobody else gives a shit what you have except you so buy what you like.
Picked up the 54 last month after spending two hours at the AD trying the 58 and 54 on back and forth. Tough decision!! Love the 54 but you can’t go wrong.
Had the 41mm. Too heavy and thick on my 7 in wrist. Sold it and got the 58. The 54 is nice but too small for me. Buy what suits your wrist. The Black Bay is a beautiful retro inspired diver. You can't go wrong.
I want t-fit, but just to have it as a quirk. I never have issues with fit or comfort on any watch tbh. I got a Steel Reef clip-out half link for my 58, just for fun. Still don't actually need it though.
I prefer ther finer coin edge on the 58's bezel and crown. Plays with the light better and looks classier. I also don't like how the '54 only has gilt on the bezel and handset, but then has white on the bezel. There's less continuity. And the lack of red triangle pip makes it too sterile. Also not sure why it has a lollipop secondhand.
Whilst the new BB54 is really nice with a fantastic size of 37mm, I still prefer my BB58, there’s just that vintage style charm that works for a lot of people. 👍🏼
It also has enough color pop from the bezel to keep it interesting. The little details like the snow flake seconds and refined matching coin edge bezel and crown make the 58 very special.
@@michaelbishop9157 Yes . But personally for me , it’s not my style, because I have a vintage Tudor Submariner . But the bb54 looks great. I prefer the aesthetics off the bb58. 👍🏼
i own a black, blue and silver BB58, looked at the BB54 in goldsmiths and I of the opinion the BB54 is aesthetically an inferior watch. If they gave the BB54 the Mercedes hour hand it would of made the watch more appealing.
58 with a T-Fit clasp will be perfection. The 54 is too small for my taste, the bezel insert is just ugly without the minute marks and the red triangle, the crown lost its charm and why would they replace the snowflake seconds hand with a lollipop? But those are just my opinions, of course. The truth is that I'd rather just get a Pelagos 39 instead of both of those. I mean...you get ceramic, you get titanium, you get a divers extension, the awesome "3D" indices. It just appeals more to me.
I have a 37mm diver from Davosa, which I love and use a lot (not for diving). I’d like a better diver, but this one’s hard to beat for cost/quality, not to mention the history and experiences I had with this watch on. In terms of size and quality, the Tudor 54 might be a good upgrade from the Davosa though, so I am looking forward to trying one out. The 58 is too big, and I think maybe a bit too mainstream.. I’m in no hurry though: a replacement for my Davosa is something I’m going to take a long time to get it right! I tried a Longines compressor on the other day, and discovered I actually prefer a classic external bezel on a diver: it’s just much more convenient to use. So I will replace my diver at some point, but with what, a Tudor 54 maybe…
The 58 is only mainstream or 'played out' within the bubble of the watch community. In real life, where nobody cares about watches, in a sea of Apples, how many Tudors have you seen?
Both are gorgeous watches. The 54 and 58 are too small for my wrist but, notwithstanding, the snowflake seconds hand was the dealbreaker for me stylistically on the entire BB range. At last Tudor catered for minorities like me and the new BB burgundy with the lollipop seconds hand is on order.
The 58, because it's now been discontinued and they're not making them anymore. You've got a price floor there. Also, it's a very fine daily wear all weather mechanical watch for the reasons cited in this vid.
No on the fly. Why would I pay $6,000 for a watch that lacks that when I can buy a $300 watch that has it. If they decide to include it on the 58 then I will definitely consider it.
Maybe he just likes the way the 58 looks over the 54. I find exact replicas kind of boring. At least the 58 is it’s own thing picking design cues from Tudor/Rolex past. Big crown, red triangle, but changing the seconds hand to snow flake and gilting the bezel.
@@michaelriera6277 the matte dial on the 58 is better than the 54 because it’s more historically accurate, but usually how the watch world works is the closer you get to the actual vintage design the better because vintage designs were done correctly. That’s why vintage submariners sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars and they can’t even be used as true tool watches anymore
I tried the 54 on and found it a bit dull. At least when compared with the black BB58. Besides the upgraded clasp, what is it that you liked about the 54 over the 58?
@@michaelriera6277 I have a 6.75 wrist, and I like the idea of a vintage sized diver with a modern build. But to be honest, it’s so hard to let go of the 58. It’s my Go to, with two many memories. I even engraved SMART MAN’S ROLEX on the case back. Hahaha
There is a lot of hype around the 54 right now. Let things cool off a bit, then see if you are still lusting over the 54. I bet if every review and RU-vidr said the 54 was a lesser watch you may feel differently. If you already have the 58 in black and you’ve made memories why sell it?
"Wanted to be a little bit different." But picked the 58 that is probably the most overhyped diver that floods watch social media in the past 5 years. Right.
This is insane, trying to compare a clone to original clone with a smaller clone. I am afraid Tudor will become the next Omega which produce Speedmaster in thousands variations which are basically the same!!!
Mr. Hunter I generally like your content, you give nice concise reviews of sports watches that are pretty enjoyable. I must say though that we need to move on from the Black Bay 58, before it consumes all of our souls. It is so aggressively boring and played out that it makes me genuinely numb. There are many cooler watches both cheaper and more expensive that wipe the floor with the BB58, but receive about 10% of it's publicity. You have the power to shift the balance. There's a whole horological world of watches out there. Let's explore it. Cheers!
