What you do with your bow drill sets is your business. It’s not even a question. :) Making them is part of the training and learning process. Totally agree.
Hi David! Pine is my best friend in camp. There is fatwood, which is nearly magic, but there is also the general utility of pine. Your videos demonstrate this point again and again. Thankfully, we here in the Eastern woodlands are BLESSED with plenty of pine. One thing I would warn about, to those new to foraging in the piney woods, is to be mindful of yellow jackets buzzing about low to the ground. The last thing you want is to start picking up branches and realize too late that you've disturbed a yellow jackets nest in the ground under the pine.
`Been there done that. I usually don't realise I'm being attacked until there are about a dozen of them stuck to my clothes. They don't like lawnmowers or the Dave pushing it.
LOL! I'm going to end with a flaming hobo stove as usual... especially on this one! Thank you. It helps the channel when people watch to the end, click on the links, etc.
(Stay tuned, though, and watch me make a fresh new Virginia Pine set and try it out!!!) I accumulate so many bow drill sets that they start showing up everywhere. They’ll be rolling around in the back glass of the Camry, under the seats, in the floorboards, in the trunk, center console, etc. They find their way into the house also: garage, closets, drawers, tops of the bureaus, etc. You might wonder why I don’t give them away to kids trying to learn. I’ve tried 3 times in my life to give hand and bow drill sets to friends that were struggling to learn the skill. All 3 times they immediately stopped trying to learn and quit. Giving a proven set to a beginner discourages them because many times they can’t even make the set work in the first place. I have to believe that reality comes crashing down on them about the amount of dedication and practice that it's going to take to master this skill. Watch as I Log Cabin fire lay my spindles, fire boards, and bearing blocks and set them ablaze with Fatwood. Stay tuned as I immediately started building my next bow drill set out of Virginia Pine. Come see how easily it produced an ember and fired up Pine Needles and kindling. Please follow the LINKs below and SUBSCRIBE. Thank You! The Bow Drill and flint and steel was all I had before your videos and in my world of making fire (thanks to you david ) I am not to shabby ! With that said, the hand drill fire has not happened , it is by far the hardest for me but one day I may get a coal . But out of all, the fire roll with ash and rust just amazes me..........and those on a job site now and then. .... NOTE: Not all broken arrowhead material is good for making sparks but much of it is so dont throw it back on the ground when looking for arrowheads, save it for fire making.
That reasoning reminds me of martial arts. Instant gratification is the exact opposite of friction fire path 😅 You know I make ovrrnighters videos. There's a reason I don't make handdrills in the woods... I'm not there, yet 😁
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Haha, no worries David, I hope you will enjoy the videos, and if no, no pressure 😁 All that to say I still need to make an overnighter using friction fire... Looks like a daunting task, but that's how we move forward. Be safe ! 👊
David - Thank you for another informative bow drill video (Didn’t know that fatwood makes such a good bearing block.) Would the wood segment with the running channel work well for the Fire Plow technique? Happy Trails! 🇺🇸 🏕 🌲
David, Have you ever made a pump drill for fire starting? I’ve never seen it in your videos list and would be interested to see what you think of it. I quite like the fire pump method as it’s very stable, fast, and low effort. Only downside is you need a stone weight with a central hole for the spindle and depending on how you achieve this it could take seconds or hours. A masonry bit makes quick work of it if the material is drillable.
Makes sense to me! What If someone who is a near expert in bow drilling / hand drilling after being given a set, needs to use a friction fire setup and can't make it work bc they've never made their own that worked?!
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl It's been a couple of years for me as well. I was just joking since you said people get mad when you burn your fire drill sets and so I started with this has angered me. Then proceeded to make a joke.
Or maybe it's like fixing a big meal with leftovers then just throwing it all away. Guess if give to those who are hungry, they wont learn to prepare food. So just throw it all away. Not angry. Trying to understand. Maybe similar to making furniture for self use then burn it up when no longer needed. (?).
Poor analogy friend. If peanuts were good food for me but you had an an extreme allergy to them, that you knew nothing about, I'd throw them away before giving them to you. Same thing here. I know that giving beginners a proven set is only going to hurt them. They do not know this.
giving people sets is literally the same as giving them fish instead of teaching them how to fish. a couple pieces of advice are worth more than giving somebody a set.
