I think the company rejects very good items because they intend to sell in rescue boxes. They have no accountability for what they don’t photograph and price. I noticed over a period of time when I sent in 4 very large bags. They rejected what I considered to be my best items. All four bags had expensive designer brands that I purchased in NYC. They photographed lesser items from Anthropology and FreePeople etc. and priced them higher than I expected but totally rejected things I would expect to be much higher priced. I complained through customer service and they got back to me saying items must have smelled or been dirty. Talk about adding insult to injury! The items sent were in excellent condition. In fact I was only selling them because I’ve lost significant weight. So I definitely agree with you. BTW I looked at the Better Business Bureau complaints and there were a lot.

So sorry to hear that happened to you, also, happened to me. Sent two large bags of clothing and I rec'd 12.00, and there where name brands with tags still on, never worn. I guess the " Live and Learn " really applies here. Thanks for your honesty and sharing your experience with us.

Lisa Schiavone-Melchione that is super shady. I wonder what REALLY goes on behind the scenes in that company. This is why I sell things on Facebook and can't find any online sites that I can trust. I'd rather give my items to ppl for free (not even Goodwill) so that I know they are truly going to good use and not for just profit. Argh, this drives me insane!

Aka Mommy, thanks for your video. I used to work for a company (Buffalo Exchange, and it was years ago!), they did the same as Thredup. Idk if they were online as I don’t think it was an option in those days! They were an excellent company to work for! I feel that some companies nowadays are really good to work with in the beginning when they are “starving” and when they get bigger, they just don’t care about consumers anymore. What’s up with that?! I’m with you!

I know this is an older video but I gotta say people are too afraid of "being negative" these days where it doesn't even apply -- describing a bad experience isn't negativity, especially when it's so useful to others. I was considering buying from thredup but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth that sellers aren't even getting enough back to cover their fees! I guess it will depend on how much longer I stay poor. ;) Definitely won't be selling to them like I was considering too (but my clothes are probably too worn for consignment anyway).

I understand exactly what you're saying! My payout was a little more than the amount you stated, but it wasn't anything close to what they're making after my items sold. They literally sold ONE item (among MANY others) for the same amount that they gave me for the total bag. Now I see they are charging $9.99 to mail the bag when it used to be free. I'm glad you're speaking out about this!

Thanks for being so honest! I see tons of reviews of the company from other RU-vidrs, so I thought I would give it a try as well. Before I sent my items, I checked some of the payout prices on their website and was shocked to see that my higher quality items would only be paid for with cents on the dollar, so I didn't end up using them to sell. I can put my items on a Facebook group and do the work myself to make at least a whole dollar. Sad, because the idea behind the company is genius!

I completely agree. I gave a bag of clothing definitely worth more than $350 to thredup expecting at least $20. No, for a bag of barely/never used clothing, I got $4. And honestly, I was giving the clothes away without caring about money in return, but you can't market your whole brand on consignment and then not even give enough money to buy a single item on the shop. I'm not sure what I can buy for $4, but I can't say it's a whole lot. I completely understand the feeling of being taken advantage of. I could have sold my clothing myself and made ten times that, minimum.

Hello again I just did a live chat with them about it and this is what they told me "Well we did implement a bag fee in July of 2016, however, that standard bag fee we actually got rid of as of May 26 of this year." "On the other hand, we do have an expedited bag option that would deduct $9.99 from your bag to have it processed within one week from when it arrives." "Yes, that'll be the standard bag with NO fee. And yes, as long as you are not opted into return assurance, any unaccepted items will be donated/recycled. :)" So I guess is up to us if we want to pay that 9.99 fee FYI

Ugh I had a similar experience at somewhere like Once upon a child, one if those kids resell shops, everything, lots of clothes costume, etc for like $7. Same deal, they buy it for $.50 & then resell for $5-$10 😱 I had better luck at big consignment sales like Just Between Friends where you price & tag the clothes & you get straight cut of whatever sells during y weekend sale

I've been using a company called Swap.com. I sent them about the same number of items that I sent to ThredUp and I've made well over $100. The difference with this site is that YOU price your items, not the company. They do still take a percentage of the profit, but you actually get paid. I'm planning on doing a video explaining the process as a follow up to this video, so be on the lookout for that! ;)

Hi there! I haven't had a ton of luck with sites online. So, for my kids clothing, I use a local consignment shop and generally get a decent return on things. I would definitely look into that option before trying an online source. I know that you can also sell on Facebook groups. If you go that route, I would sell as much as you can in "lots".....those seem to sell better. :)

I am very new to ThredUP. I just sent in my first clean out bag. I only made 5.97. I wasn’t super disappointed because my expectations we’re too high. My first issue is they just started charging $1.99 restock fee for return items. My second issue and the major one is I auto-purchased an item that was initially in another person’s cart (or bag). When it hadn’t been purchased the item in 24 hours the auto purchase kicked in. I attempted to apply the discount code I was entitled to use and it would not accept the code. I contacted customer service and they said their system wouldn’t allow the discount code or the item to be put in a bundle for shipping. So I ended up paying a lot more then I had anticipated, roughly 29 dollars more. The customer service agent was also not apologetic and didn’t acknowledge the computer should allow all sales to be processed with same policies or disclose it prior to the customer making the decision to buy. I was really upset. I formed very negative opinion on company.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Quick question, were you able to reach out and connect with anyone at the company about this issue? I totally agree that sometimes businesses need to be outed if they provide a bad experience for their users, but they should also be able to make amends first and try to fix the problem. I do the same thing when I get a bad product on Amazon. I always reach out to the seller first and explain the problem to see if they're willing to fix it. If not, I'll continue to post my honest review about the product and customer service.
@akaMommy

I totally agree with you. I had a similar experience and its very sad that sellers are taken advantage of. Its good that you posted this information and I see other people have had same experience. It will be hard for Thredup to make amends now and they should certainly change this UPFRONT payment system and just give sllers an agreed % of the sale price. Seem fair to me.

I thought they give you an automatic payout for items that are hot sellers, and then the rest are consignment, so you get up to 84 days to have them sold, and then you get the pricing from that. So your 7$ was just the automatic payout? or Nothing that was considered consignment sold either?

I sure wished I had found this channel before I sent my one and only bag. I sent a bag with about 40items in it all were either new or barely worn. They accepted 15 or 16 items. I had already marked that whatever they didn't accept they could donate thinking it wouldn't be many items. I was surprised that they only took that many and on top of that a couple of the items they did not "accept" had never been worn and still had tags on them. They were also fairly recent items (with in the last 2 years). I received about $6.90 before the fees. So I was only going to make $ 1.91. The gas I used to drive this to my local post office was more that. I contacted them and did not hear back for a few days. In the meantime I saw a sponsored video on them and made a remark in the comments about it. They responded to that and told me to contact customer support. I did (again) and the waived the bag fee so I would receive $6.90. One thing I did not understand why some items they pay out instantly and others you received commission on after they sold. To date I have made a total of $9.70. I bought a couple of items from them just to get something out of it and to use the credit that I had. I will never send another bag nor buy again. To me, it was really a shady deal. I have some doubts that the items that they did not accept were actually donated.

I agree, I’ve sent BIG bags similar and only gotten maximum $20. What bothers me more recently is I feel there prices are getting higher and when I receive the clothing it smells terrible and I can’t wash it out, if I’m paying for an item that’s as high as they price their items I would rather pay extra for something that is new and not damaged or stinky.

Isn't there the regular upfront payout and then the consignment earnings? I have had the upfront payout. And then the clothing that takes longer to sell is the consignment and I made a few dollars in addition to the payout on those items. I don't feel they give a respectable percentage of the consignment earnings, though.

Hi,I am a new subscriber today. I was about to start a relationship with Thredup and thankfully your comments made me continue my search into this company. Now I also try to only put out positive messages, but warnings are a positive way to save others from experiencing the negative treatment which you received. ThredUP created that, you are just warning all of us how negative ThredUP treat people who do business with them. You did that in a very positive way, and I for one am appreciative of this. Seems to me you did a service for those of us who planned on doing business with them and now know enough not to. Well good for you standing up for yourself and others. I say keep up the good work.

If it's any help at all to you, after all of this happened, I researched several companies and decided to use Swap.com. They've changed their policies so many times, I'm not sure anymore. However, at the time of this video, I had NEVER had a bad experience selling to ThredUp, so I had no idea that this outcome was even a possibility. I sent in $300 of my daughters vguc and i mean resale value. Including London Fog coat that she hardly wore, several gymboree that were bought brand new and she hardly wore (maybe wore one time each), and also several rare edition dresses that were gorgeous dressy dresses. The bag was at full capacity. I couldnt hv put one more tiny little item in it. I got $9 for the whole lot. I was ticked! Never ever again. I could’ve gotten more out of her clothes at a garage sale. I felt total disgust for the company.

What do you mean the amount they "charged you" to ship them your items? The shipping labels are free?
@akaMommy
@akaMommy 7 лет назад
There is a shipping fee that accompanies every package you send to them. It's deducted from your "profits". Ideally, it wouldn't matter because you could make enough from the sale of your items to offset this cost. However, that isn't always the case....

Thank you for the heads up! I've been trying to sell some of my high quality, somewhat expensive clothing to these online consignment stores, but I just can't trust them anymore. I tried Tradesy last. I've sold things on there in the past and I was really happy with the little amount of markup they did on my asking price, which I felt made my items more affordable to consumers. Since then, they've marked up their prices to the point where if I want something to be affordable to the consumer, I'd have to mark my item as a $3 payout to myself. $3 for something I paid over $50 for and wore once or not at all. However if I mark it as a $10 payout to myself, the item total for the consumer is far too much and I just don't think that's right.These are mall brand items, not high end brands. Its so frustrating. I apologize for the rant. I wanted to know if you have found any GOOD online consignment shops since?

Thank you for sharing your experience. My frustration, along with the pricing, is that by the time they process the bags, the seasons have changed and they accept few items. I was so upset when I got less than $2 from my last bag (after their new fees) and looked to see what they were selling my items for. They were making over $500 if they sold all my items. I will not deal with this company anymore.

I make product review videos here on RU-vid ans Honestly, this is not negativity! This is helping the sisterhood out.I'm so glad I watched this. I was just looking up Thread up and I watched their how to video, and saw yours. I have a HUGE bag of clothes I was going to send out to them. I'm thinking the shipping cost would probably kill me.I've sent electronics out to resell companies and they always pay the shipping! I'd rather donate them to a local thrift store then get swindled by threadUp! Most of the clothes were never worn...from kohls and I'd expect a decent payout.Plato Closet here...years ago offered me so little on each shirt I stopped going there too! Offerup and Letgo are apps I mainly use now for selling my stuff.I'm happy you posted this!

Hi! New sub. here and someone who was considering possibly trying thred-up as a buyer because you-tubers who I respect have been happy with them and recommended them in the past. I just recently noticed those people, and now you, have changed their mind about thred-up and some seem to be in the process of possibly dropping them. I just subscribed to your channel because I like the fact that you have been very responsible about your opinions re: this company. I agree-you once liked and recommended them, but now things have changed and you are letting your subscribers know why. I like that you did that, and I also like that you care about the sellers who now are probably not being treated fairly with what they are being given for their items. That demonstrates that you care and are a kind and morally responsible person-and I like that. Thred-up is apparently no longer taking the high road. The problem is that THEY GOT GREEDY. I've seen the same kinds of things being said by many others, and I don't believe in coincidences. So now, they will, unfortunately, have to pay the price for "going greedy". That will take them down, just as it has many other companies. They do a lot of things, in the beginning, to appear fair, well-intentioned, accommodating, etc., then the greed begins to take over and they start going down the tubes. Maybe they can redeem themselves if they heed these customer comments as both buyers and sellers, but probably not. Hopefully, similar companies will take notice of thred-up's downfall and not make the same mistakes as they begin to become successful.
@akaMommy

Thank you so much, Lauren!! I'm so happy to have you here. Yes, I was a long time loyal customer to ThredUp and LOVED their service when I first learned of it many years ago because it provided moms a way to actually save money on clothing AND feel good about sending used clothing to other moms for a fair price. So much has changed with them since they first started and I can only hope that others will take the time to do the research on their policies before sending anything their way.

As an employee of thredup i can say alot goes into the processing process. I believe alot of customers don't realize some of the effects with their clothing . becauee whther something has a new tag or not there still may have been a stain that was unrecognizable to the buyer or other defects that the customer may have not realized had defects with them

I appreciate your honesty and thank you for sharing your experience with ThredUp. I own a consignment store in CT and truly believe that supporting local stores is an all around better experience. Consigning with your local store allows for a greater percentage of the sale and as a purchaser, you get to try-on the item, feel the fabric and see the quality of the piece. If you don't have a local consignment store - many of us have consignors that ship items. I personally have consignors from all over the country. Each consignor gets an online account and can check to see what we have listed their pieces for, when they sell and what their balance is at all times. Look for a store that has this service - It creates transparency and you feel more a part of the process.

I agree with you! I used to get $50-100 credit for my clothes. The last few times the amount was a lot less! I think it was a couple of dollars. I send designer clothes, shoes, etc and in great condition. Some items unused. I think now if I send my clothes to them, I will look at it as more of a donation. And if I get money back that would be extra. I usually send donation bags to Mexico and other charities, and the only reason I used THred up was I thought that the nicer Designer items would be appreciated.
