no, he knows that he can do harm. He aware what he is douing is harmfull completly. What makes him not care is his self centeredness. "what matter is me, not someone else". He thinks he can get away with it, that's why he does not care. His empaty only turns on when the stakes on him.
@@eclighthouse Yeah, I get you. It's sucks, but here is the thing: The World is full of great people actually, just don't search in the mud, otherwise you can search forever finding nothing but garbage.
Yeah,Jerry ticked me off at that moment. Purposefully killing a snake person because he didn't want to ask Rick for help. Shows how arrogant he is He's pretty terrible
@@kobefisher12yearsago94 Yeah, Jerry's mostly shit, this is a pretty stupid reason to get mad at compared to all the other shit. He had no real reason to trust it off it's word alone, and the fact all the snake people got wiped from existence at the end should put the plane and it's passenger's fate's in question, but it's never brought up or answered.
Jerry sucks, but I honestly hate Beth more. She is more malicious and worse to her kids IMO. Plus she gets off easier than Jerry for doing terrible things like him.
I think the worst part is that they give these characters barely any redeemable qualities and keep them just as awful with no development and expect us to enjoy it
I feel like that's why Jerry is so hated compared to all of the other characters, despite other characters being arguably just as bad as people. Jerry's flaws are just so mundane and relatable, and we hate that we encounter people with those attributes (or sometimes have those attributes ourselves).
All the other characters are constantly fearless and lucky beyond any logic while Jerry is cowardly and fails miserably everytime he tries to do something. Jerry is the only relatable character.
@@STG2022 You're right. Morty is courageous. He constantly overcomes his fear and tries to behave ethically. No such acolades can be rendered onto Jerry.
I think what bothers me most about Jerry was when he tries to help Morty with his science project, but he only does it for his own ego not because he wants to see his son do well in his science project, at the end we see that's true since he publicly embarrassed him on pluto in front of aliens praising him instead of defending & listening to his own son. He doesn't care who he hurts as long as it benefits him. A good father would want the best for his child and in no way does he try to contribute to the family or his kids. At least the other fatherly figures in other shows kind of contribute by providing for their family by working, Jerry does nothing.
Yeah, PhantomStrider once said it best: "[Jerry] is so insecure about his intelligence that he threatens an entire ecosystem just to pretend that he's right."
But what bothers me is that people forget that he stop and revalues what was right later in the episode and does what’s right. Even when he could have just continued to lie.
Rick is a hypocrite because he too manipulated Beth to get back into her life and stay with the family, hell in this same season Rick once again manipulates the family and has corrupted Morty mentally after so many adventures. Rick is also a parasite, just a bigger, more tactful parasite.
I think he sees them as different because Rick is capable and brave enough to defend his family when danger arises. Except that danger wouldn't have even been there if he didn't force himself into their lives
Never mind the fact that he literally abandon her in a previous Universe just took Morty with him and got A New Beth. Then in this episode all of a sudden he gives a fuck about his daughter and her being taken away from him. Even though that's not his original beth nor was the previous one. It's Beth was taken away from a previous version of him. The other bats only get with Jerry's because Rick's need a Morty especially if there are part of the citadel. The citadel that c137 Rick Sanchez started. Going to the same process that he taught them to do. And it's even reviewed in a later episode that they are literally Dustin to come together just to make Morty all because of Rick. They literally needs an end up hooking and high school because of Rick. He put some sort of chemical in Beth to be interested in Jerry just to get a Morty. The very last thing that he's complaining about emblem injury for is his own goddamn fault. I love this show and I love the characters even for the pieces of shit that they are, but hypocrite doesn't begin to describe what Rick Sanchez is.
I'm pretty sure our main "Rick" got his family killed and went to live with another version of beth waiting for Rick prime to come back...I don't remember him manipulating his way into the family....Jerry is a completely different case
Jerry's always been my favourite for that reason. While everyone else is a true asshole, he at least thinks he's not one. For that reason, he has some really sweet, pitiful moments. Like meeting Doofus Rick, a person so stupid that he actually cares about his interests, and the friendship they form because of it
Jerry used to have more depth in season one, he still had flaws but he at least tried to be a better person. I don’t know if it happened in season two or three, but he became unlike-able even as a punching bag type character. I don’t know why the writers ran out of ideas that quickly
I actually saw someone arguing the issue was clash of interest. One writer wanted show to be episodic where previous episodes don't affect current, other wanted more story telling with character growth etc. so they ended up with weird shit that doesn't work and makes this show inconsistent
In recent seasons he slowly had a character development. It’s slow but it’s there. Plus season 1 Jerry is dead killed by the original Rick. But season 1 Jerry shows a potential in him actually growing and stronger when he has nothing left. Like literally nothing such as a dead family.
The writer of the show purposely put that in to show that it’s not a logically accurate assessment of Jerry. Jerry has an ego but unlike EVERY OTHER DEPLORABLE character in the show, he doesn’t let it control nearly all of his actions. He is only one to actually care about others feelings not for his own benefit but for theirs. PART of why he’s always complaining is because he has to deal with frustrating sociopathic people that always put his kids in dangerous or potentially life risking scenarios. Jerry is in fact, a complex character but he isn’t completely selfish like some of the other characters are.
The cope men. I can't help but assume that people that unironically like Jerry and defend him are just people coping that they might be like him or their reasoning is on the same wavelent as his. He was literally build to be an unlikeable punching bag, and there are people out there that still like him.
@@sirbruno95 There are far more Jerrys than Ricks in this world. He's not the most unlikable character on the show. That would go to Summer and Beth. Jerry is meant to be a representation of a normal person in the world of a cartoon. Think of Frank Grimes. He isn't really likable like Jerry and he's also the punching bag and shares many qualities with Jerry. With Rick in the picture, Jerry has lost/losing a lot of influence. Look at season one where he fights for his kids more, and threatens to put Rick in a home. You're judging a man who has lost most of his power. He was probably a somewhat okay father.
Y’know, it really sucks how much Jerry became such a bad character during season 3, because, to be honest. I actually thought he was a better parent than Beth in the first two seasons. Not great, but better than her, and that’s because of one simple reason. He cared about his kids. Beth would constantly let her 14-year-old go on life threatening adventures with her father that always left him traumatized just so she could have a relationship with her deadbeat father again. The finale of season 2 especially shows this. The Smith’s are stuck on a planet that’s way to small to realistically live on and the only way out of there is for them to turn Rick in for all the crimes he’s committed. Jerry, wants to do so, but Beth won’t let him, because she still wants to have a relationship with Rick! I understand her wanting to reconnect with her dad after years, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of her kids’ lives! Jerry even points this out to her and she yells and starts crying, saying that she doesn’t want Rick to leave her again! What makes it worse is that Morty and Summer take HER side! Why!? I understand that they care about Rick, but Jerry has a serious point that ever since Rick moved in, they’ve only gotten into trouble and nearly died multiple times! And, Rick chose to do all the crimes he committed! THEY shouldn’t have to deal with the consequences of HIS actions! Like, seriously is there something about that episode that I’m forgetting that would explain how Beth is the one in the right!? That’s a genuine question. Please tell me. So, yeah, that’s my two cents.
The thing is, all of them, Beth, Morty and Summer, choose to stay with Rick. No one force them, Beth didnt force them, all of them, except Jerry, choose to not let the evil alien take their gramp (the "crime" just a farcade for Galactic Federation to capture Rick, the real reason is they want to steal Rick portal juice formula) Both Summer and Morty are mature, even more than Jerry, if he really care about them, he should respect their wish (which later proven that Jerry only care about himself)
@@osirisshadoll4572But again, if anything actually serious happens to Summer and Morty, Jerry is gonna be blamed because “Hes a bad Father and shoulda been more involved”
I don’t think it’s Beth not caring about her children, but rather giving them freedom and trusting her father that they are safe. I believe Beth just thinks that it can be a good experience for the kids and that they learn stuff when going out with Rick. So for Beth’s pov at the start its: „well they don’t necessarily always like it, but it helps them just as school does“ until the kids like it themselves which then turns it into „learning and having a good time with their grandpa“ I believe so, since she was fine with those adventures WHEN they weren’t within school times
a clip you show towards the end, where rick wipes jerry’s memory, got me wondering how many times rick has prevented jerry’s growth as a person off-screen so that he remains the family punching bag.
Jerry is my favourite character in the show, cuz he is the only one who is actually capable of being happy while the rest ger absorbed into Rick's nihilism
Wait until you finish the series. I used to HATE jerry with every ounce of my being but season 6 just did something to my brain that transformed jerry from this unbearable guy into one of my favourite characters in the series. He really does get more likeable as the show goes on. He makes mistakes, but he also apologizes and admits when he's wrong. He really loves his family and Beth, even though his pettiness sometimes gets in the way of that. Jerry's the true anti-Rick of the series. It's easy for us to hate him because Rick hates him, and Jerry's flaws are so much more human and less glamorous than Rick's. I have trouble disliking Jerry now when I rewatch the old episodes because he's really just a silly dude trying his best.
Yes, i wish more people viewed him as a father that is trying to do his best with his children, despite his father in law tearing their family dynamic apart and putting them in traumatic and painful situations.
What’s really getting to me is that Rick hates and blames Jerry for everything wrong that’s happening in the family, yet when Morty looked through his MEMORIES to get the crybaby backstory it seen that Rick knew that Jerry being with Beth was not always his choose, but rather another Rick from the citadel, which he caused to be created when he went on a mass killing spree. Rick cause Beth and Jerry’s relationship yet hates on Jerry for ever having it. Make it make sense. We don’t even know it this Jerry has an actually love serum injected into him, that cause his love for Beth. The writing to me doesn’t make Jerry the bunching bag to me, but rather the tragic character 😢
"Jerry sucks because we all know a Jerry" i'll do you one better... Jerry is an exaggeration of the insecurities of the AVERAGE person, and therefore his behavior feels even closer to home and leads to second hand embarrassment (cringe) "oh but i would never go as far as he does to the point that it affects others" yeah because you got something Jerry doesn't: self awareness it's not hard to eventually become a Jerry, but it's also not hard to recognize the signs and work on yourself.. that's what makes us different from Jerry: development, our willingness to grow, our social awareness...
Dude, I agreed with everything you said about Jerry Smith. He’s a horrible person and a deplorable father. Rick said it best “You act like prey, but you're a predator! You use pity to lure in your victims! That's how you survive! I survive cause I know everything, that snake survives because children wander off, and you survive cause people think "Ooh, this poor piece of shit, he never gets a break! I can't stand the deafening silent wails of his wilting soul! I guess I'll hire him or marry him!" It was Harsh, but so true!
@@phantomlordthehiddenbeast9182i mean i understand why it was deleted since it makes no sense Rick absolutely despises Jerry there's no way he would want to hang oit with him on his own accord.
SPOILERS. S4E10. . . . In the post-credits scene, Jerry ends up driving an invisible garbage truck. He's really proficient with it even though he's never driven a garbage truck before and, you know, it's invisible. Makes you wonder why Jerry doesn't get a job as a garbage truck driver.
Rick is like…the worst person alive. The smiths were a legit normal family until Rick showed up, and each smith slowly began to become like Rick. Especially Summer, who told off Jerry in the most horrible way possible that anything he ever does in life is just a pathetic attempt to prove he’s worth anything. AND ALL HE WANTED WAS TO GO CAMPING WITH HIS KIDS. He gave Summer a s’more, and she immediately told him that his existence doesn’t matter. I mean jeez, even for Jerry, that was terrible. Jerry at this point is one of the only normal people left in the smiths, while everyone treats him like garbage. At this point, even less
I think the point of jerry is that he is supposed to be that punching bag. Kind of in a similar way Meg is in Family Guy. They use pity for these characters in a very similar way, and then show off the reasons why the other characters hate them so much.
The characterization of Jerry is a perfect example of the harmful, dangerous, most evil thing of weakness & incompetence. That's worse than active malice & sadism. In later seasons, & I have mixed feelings about it, the characterization sometimes shows he's capable of more, esp given alternate Jerrys. But that just reinforces how awful he always was. It means he always *was* capable of being better, but chooses the path of least resistance, a weak thing. He *can* be strong or capable, but he'll only ever do so when it's the only thing left to do. That makes it much worse than if this is the only thing of which he's capable. You can't *truly* blame someone who cannot be more than they are, it's tragic, it's worth hating or disdaining, but that's all they are then. Jerry is worse for the later evidence he *can* be more.
I hate jerry too, absolutely but I think you misunderstood something- the alien gf situation; he wasn’t bragging about her to morty and summer, he was projecting his own thoughts about her onto them in order to feel better about his choice. The only reason he dated/bonded with that alien was because he was desperate to not only NOT be alone, but to be seen as a person that was capable of moving on from a divorce when he couldn’t actually. Still worth hating through that whole episode. Everything other conclusion you’ve made so far seems to be spot on. This is an opinion- but the real difference between rick and jerry I think, is that rick knows exactly what kind of piece of shit he is and embraces it. Jerry? Pretends like he has has no clue what he is, its a part of what makes him shitty, part of his “I’m pitiful please love me” bit. If he admits what he is, people will stay away, he can’t have that. He has to pretend like he doesn’t know and that it hurts his feelings to hear
That's a good point-- jerry (in the earlier season especially) doesn't acknowledge or realize his flaws which makes him oblivious and pitiful. But also, I feel like later on in the show, Jerry is more and more self-aware. Like in bethic twinstinct, he throws a tantrum but he still comes out of it acknowledging that he's being petty which I don't think he would've done in season 1-3
In season 6 episode 8 "Analyze Piss", I think we really were able to get a sense of how protective he is over his family. This Piss guy was harassing the family and sexualizing Summer, and since Rick was told by his therapist to not get involved in these situations, Jerry decided to step up and defend his daughter. They had a fistfight and Jerry won. This being said he is a very very flawed character but I think he's starting to improve from the earlier seasons.
Honestly agreed, I actually really like Jerry, and I think that has a lot to do with the development he’s gone through in the past few seasons. Ever since the s3 finale, he’s really grown on me. Really, the only two thing I’ve absolutely HATED him for have been 1. when he accidentally reset Morty’s video game reset device right after surviving a plane crash and having this awesome life with the girlfriend he’d found and 2. the Gotron episode. In my opinion, both Beth and Jerry acted completely deplorably by practically abandoning Morty the way that they did, and the fact that they only came back after Summer put them through the same shit she’d put Morty through makes it even worse because they hadn’t even felt remorse for what they’d done to Morty. I can forgive the remote control incident because that had been a mistake, but the Gotron incident… Idk, it just makes me angry LOL
I agree. Jerry is a case of "bad, just for the sake of being bad," rather than other fairly common cases of "bad, but it's in a charming, funny way." He's too much of a punching bag in my opinion.
And like both, I love them but unlike those 2 Jerry is decent depiction of what would happen if you threw an everyday Joe into a world like this while having the smartest being in the universe against you for smashing their daughter
jerry isnt a bad person he just has a bad personality and grew up with parents who were too soft on him and showered him with too much love the reason why his family perceives jerry as a pathetic loser as much as they do is because rick manipulates his family into thinking so
I actually dropped this show, but I remember Jerry sometimes was actually cool, in 1 episode Jerry is actually right and tries his best to deescalate the situation but nobody listens to him. But it might be the case of writers being inconsistent as fuck
Jerry is also really cool in the comic "Rick and Morty vs Dungeon and Dragons" or in those issues of comics about Doofus Rick universe and his version of Jerry. On one hand, yeah, comics might not be canon, but on the other, as you said, at this point this show is now a inconsistent mess, so these might be canon. Also in season 1 and 3 it was shown that, without Beth, Jerries life would be far "better". Like in that episode about multidimensional cable, in one version of himself he was a super star and in season 3, when he was in seperation from Beth, he was actually going somewhere with himself. Its like Beth and her family were the true parasites. But then again, as said before, this show is a mess.
@@BaranZenon In one of more recent episodes or seasons the whole family used machine to work while they're sleeping but sleeping personas took over. Jerry was not only wholesome but the only one who tried to help and deescalate situation
At least someone understands me when I hate when people say "OmG iTs jUsT a MovIe/ShOw". There was a movie that made me hate a character, then people have a problem with me.
You’re entitled to your opinion of Jerry, but calling Rick “Likable” is a bit of a stretch, he’s superficially interesting at best being the “smartest person in any universe” but beyond that he’s a complete shitbag to everyone who isn’t him including his own “family”, if you spend more than five minutes with him that would probably run it’s course really quick as it usually does with extreme narcissists and psychopaths.
I was gonna mention something but then you say your only watch up until season 4 let's just say your boy Jerry is completely the same in ever way to the point were if you see him you feel like to skip the episode
The reason most of us can't stand Jerry Smith is because 99% of us *ARE* Jerry Smith Lets be honest if most of us where in Rick and Morty we wouldn't be the genius scientist or lucky enough to be born into his family and by our selves we wouldn't survive long in a world that brutal. The best most of us could hope for is to marry into the family and be the best "normal" person that we can be.
No one wants to admit that some way or the other we all are Jerry Smith in someone else's life and Rick in some other's life and sometimes a normal person. We find him relatable and also hate him because he carries the worst parts of our personality, all in one person. Only why one can improve is to identify those problems and Work towards being a better person..
That's great to be honest hating a toxic personality can help you see why you hate it and help you to re-evaluate your self as a person so you can change it for the better While you still can
the Jerry that was left behind in S1 E6 "Ricks Potion nr. 9" and got a redebute in the current last season is very different and id love to hear what you gonna say about him
Jerry and a few other characters I know are the type of people to piss off one of the most powerful/deadly being in the universe, then run behind his equally powerful acquaintance/friendish being. Basically wanting that person to get Jerry out of that incident he cause even though those two people have no beef with each other.
hey whatsup man i've been following your channel for a bit and i always want to see a young man thrive. i think this kind of video is "it" maybe you could explore videos of a similar style so you can find your niche
You know I was in a terrible marriage to a bitter woman for a long time and at the beginning of the show I felt really bad for Jerry and even related to him. But it's time went by I started to see him as being really weak and pathetic, which is something I didn't want to relate to LOL. And while I do think that is tough and her and Jerry might not be the best fit she seemed less insufferable as time went on as you saw how difficult it was for her to be married to somebody like Jerry. I like Jerry and Beth quite a bit but for different reasons than they did when I first started watching this show
in the episode Jerry implies that he is only dating the blue alien for his own benefit. while talking to his kids he says that they are jealous of his girlfriend for looking good and that he gets telekinetic power powers from her but is grossed out on her blue skin and big head and that they think that he want to put a bag and a wig on her head. he says that they think that when in reality he thinks that. and when it no longer benefits him he makes the alien think that his kids did not like her when it was Jerry who did not like her
So this video was pretty much entirely about Season 3, which makes sense since the guy who made it just watched Season 3. With that being said I’ll say that by far Season 3 is where Jerry is portrayed the worst, he was better before and he gets better after.
Love or hate him, they did a great job writing Jerry Smith. No other character draws out more emotions than him. You hate him, now you’re pitying him, then you feel happy for him, and now you’re irritated with him
my hatred for jerry grew so much when he mistook the remote for the "save place in time" device that has 2 BUTTONS ON IT and WASN'T EVEN SHAPED LIKE REMOTELY LIKE A REMOTE. causing Morty's perfect life and all he worked hard for perish in an instant, i know it's somehow Morty's fault too but Jerry's stupidity is to blame here. He's just so unbearably stupid.
I feel like if any of us was plopped into Jerry's shoes we would behave the exact same. Imagine living a normal life until one day a super-genius with reality warping technology crash lands in your garage and immediately usurps your role as man of the house, and has a toxic parasocial relationship with everyone in the house but you. Imagine having your son, daughter, and wife worship a man who just showed up one day because he's cooler. Jerry is a lot of things but he's a good, honest person. Nobody here is intelligent enough to content with Rick, especially people who think they are. Jerry is just a normal guy living in a sci-fi fantasy cartoon, and you hate him because he reminds you that deep down, everyone, including yourself, is Jerry.
Jerry is a punching bag because he's the only normal one left in the family. Rick has completely destroyed the Smiths' ability to feel empathy, especially for Jerry, and it has spilled over to the fanbase big time. He is absolutely not that bad.
Jerry isn't honest. He consistently and constantly lies and tries to shift blame for everything he causes and he did that way before Rick really started to mess with everyone else
Jerry is fucking hilaious and is one of the top tier characters. Hes not meant to be a good person. The whole family are pieces of shits that we love because its a cartoon.
On this topic RU-vid recommended me a bootleg dub of someone’s comic and coral (the main character’s mother) bothered the hell out of me due to the last 20 minutes and it was one of her friends who was wanting to get with her offspring and she seemed like she would say yes without considering her daughter’s thoughts at all.
in one episode is season 5 or 6 he leaves multiple versions of himself and his families to die because of something about face paint varnish so no he doesn’t really change
Jerry's not only the most realistic but we all know or will know a Jerry at dome point in our lives and that's what makes him the most infuriating and it's ashame because the Actor who voices him does really well in comedy rolls....Jerry has a few bright spots latter on but the damage is already done
The final straw for me was _The Vat of Acid_ episode. When he pushes the button on Morty’s device, knowing *obviously* it wasn’t the television remote.
I have to respectfully disagree. All your points remain valid, but in my opinion Jerry has his moments, hence why I believe he is incredible. I admit that he has mediocre and childish moments, but I love him being a polar opposite to Rick. Moments when Jerry does very non-Jerry things, like being brave, or when Jerry is genuinely pleased with pathetic everyday accomplishments. The emotions I felt when Jerry met ‘stupid’ Rick I can’t even put into words. And the Jerryboree! Watching 15 ricks trying to figure out which port the HDMI cord plugs into just makes me happy. The fact that the best day of his life was a low level simulation. I’d love to hear some other peoples opinions, but I personally think Jerry deserves a touch more respect.
I think Jerry is at his best on the very first two seasons. Sure he's portrayed as kinda mediocre, but he was also the man of the house and could very well make a living. He was doing so before Rick arrived, after all. Not only that, but he constantly took action to solve the problems that he gets himself or the family into. I mean damn, we got an entire episode showing how he was willing to do anything to save his wife when the whole Cronenberg thing started and became the main reason the family actually survived that whole ordeal. He was the leader and actually fought back against the world. And sure, one might say that this was the original Jerry and since the Cronenberg episode, we've been following a different Jerry. But it's still Jerry and the episode made it clear that the only difference this new dimension should have was that Rick actually managed to cure everyone instead of turning everyone into monsters. Either way it still ends up feeling like character regression, to the point that at the first episode of season 3, when Earth was in chaos because the economy had collapsed, he literally crawled his way back home, avoiding any conflict while cowering in fear. I mean, was it really necessary to change the character that much? Feels like he went the "flanderization" effect, with the show highlighting his most recognizable worst traits and forgetting about most of what he could be, making him more bland in the process.
thar scene where morty is on the phone with summer trying to give her a code that saves his life while Jerry starts butting in seeking attention and then acts all whiny when they dont give it to him. That scene gets under my skin so bad bro
If you get up to seasons 5-beginning of 7 he does show a lot of personal growth and acceptance of his martial situation among other insecurities that bogged him down in the earlier seasons
He sucks until he gets a better than Summer and Beth, and Summer and Beth go down hill. Jerry wants to spend time with family, Summer humilates him, and Beth and the Beth that left him cheat on him.
