Why I cant set the correct frame rate in DaVinci Resolve 18 - its LOCKED at project level? Here's how to fix it explained for beginners by broadcast colourist and editor, Darren Mostyn.

@@DarrenMostyn I was recording a family birthday party yesterday on my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra at 1080p@60fps but when I played it back and looked at the meta data information, the video said 59fps, is this a normal common problem or should I be worried, what would cause this to be rendered at 59fps even though I selected 60fps.

OMG, thank you for explaining that. I broke into edition using FCP 5x ~15yrs ago, left ~10yrs ago and am back now about a year ago using DR so I'm having to re-learn a lot (the editing I do is fairly light). The frame rate has stumped me since I began using DR b/c our local cable TV broadcast only takes very specific frame rates and I'd create my shows (we record in the local studio on their equipment so the raw footage is correct) and I'd not know why I couldn't export them the way I needed. DR is so powerful...and it's taking me a lot of trial & error to learn.

Two things . . . I LOVE how you take a topic and get right down to how to do it. I can't tell you how many RU-vid videos I've watched where whatever topic I'm looking for an answer to the presenter doesn't get into the "how" for three, four, five minutes. Completely frustrating. Second thing, would love to see your workflow on using the new proxy workflow in DR 18. Thanks, and I am taking care of myself :)

I actually had not thought of the dragging the timeline down and then decomposing ( I have always done the copy and paste way ) - you say this is for a beginner? I don't consider myself a beginner, so might be something for anyone in your tutorials. Just saying. It seems that we get busy when things change from version to version and things get missed. So I would say to other people out there - Darren's tutorials should be watched regardless of your experience. The more you know, the more one little technique is so invaluable. Thank you Darren.

Hey just saw your tutorial it was awesome. I have a problem with copy pasting from one timeline to another. When I copy from one timeline to TIMELINE 2 my audio gets messed up I mean I can only hear in one side of my headphones after copy pasting.

Creating a new timeline only works if you have not done anything in Fairlight - which you would have to setup again in your newly created timeline. A better solution: * Just duplicate the current timeline. * Open the duplicate and delete all the footage (CTRL + A to select everything). Now FPS might be still grayed out in the timeline settings. * Open the original timeline. * Open the duplicate. Now FPS can be changed in the timeline settings. * Copy back your footage from the original timeline.

Yep. The upgrade to 18 got me with this one because the default project settings are re-set to 24fps. My custom default was overwritten and they hid the location for making those defaults. Fortunately Jason found them: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MjeD-DVxwlA.html&feature=shares

I patch a lot training videos from 30 to 35 fps and adjust audiotrack with avisynth . So all videos speedup in VLC player. Can not fill in Resolve timeline setting Fps 35. ☹😮

35fps is not a recognised frame rate for delivery. that may be why.

TmpGenc Smartrender 6 (Japan) will do the job. 35 fps in and 35 fps out. It is not problem with Resolve 35 fps in and render Timeline 30 Fps out. The Smartrender in Resolve will not work

Hey guys so heres a summary. 1. Create new timeline. 2. Uncheck 'use project setting' 3. Under format tab choose desired frame rate. Save/create. 4. Browse media pool to find your old timeline. 5. Simply drag the old timeline to your new timeline. 6. Go to deliver and the frame rate should now be the the correct one. Cheers.

It may be "unlocked" but its still not unlocked. Tried exactly what you said but it still only gives me the options of 50, 59 and 60. I want 29.97 as I am working with old standard def footage. Edit: It was the check box about "Allow Interlaced Processing". With that checked you are limited to 50, 59 and 60 fps. Deselect it and then you can run at 29.97

You can change the timeline framerate if there is no footage in it. So rather than having to create a new sequence, you can select all the clips on the timeline, hit Command+X to cut it but keep it in your clipboard, then right click on the timeline in the media pool, select timelines->timeline settings, untick "use project setting" and change the framerate. The go back to your timeline and hit command+V to paste all your clips back in. this is helpful if you've added a bunch of audio effects on a track rather than clip level (Dynamics, EQ etc) so you con't have to remake all of those in a new timeline

The question i have, which has bothered me for many years, is how do i set my default frame rate to 25p when i open Resolve. I always edit in 25p, but every time i open a new project i have to set it manually from 24 to 25, or drag a clip and be aked to change frame rate, which can be confusing if I'm working with both 25p and 50p / 100p footage and i'm not sure which clips are 25p.

Hi. You can save a Project Template in the Project settings. You can then load that as default. Hope that helps.

Hello Darren, I am a 3D artist I wanted to render my animation to 30fps but didn't change the project settings of default 24fps I tried your method but it didn't work - Why it didn't- The 24fps shows 6-sec video and for 30fps it should be 5-sec it shows 30fps on the new timeline, says renders in 30fps but the rendered video is still 6-sec long Does anybody have any idea why it happened and I tried other methods too

Great video Darren, but it didn't answer the question is I was asking myself throughout haha. Why can't you just change it at any time like in Premiere? I've edited using PP for like 10 years and now recently switched to Resolve, but in my mind it doesn't make any sense why it would be locked. Premiere just conforms all edits to the new frame rate without issues and has done so for years. What gives? 🤷

PROBLEM: I was working on 50fps timeline - and this method doesn't give me that long pulldown menu with all possible framerates like @5:54 . I only get 50fps /59.9fps /60fps under Project Settings>Timeline Framerate [Playback framerate is locked to 50 btw]. So........No option for 24 or 25fps.... What went wrong here?

Hey Darren, I'm having a major issue. I need to go from 24FPS to 23.976FPS. When I follow your steps and decompose, the timeline does appear, but there's gaps between all clips. As I have about 7 video tracks and 15 audio tracks, it's impossible to delete gaps without creating any major syncing problems. Any advice?

One wrinkle I discovered with the copy and paste solution is that Davinci "forgot" that my mono audio tracks had been set to stereo. Had to reset them in the new timeline. Bug!

All good but when I export at the end it makes an error saying "Render Failed - The Fusion composition on the current frame or clip could not be processes successfully", so it wont export with a new frame rate :( The clips were at 60, timeline is 60, all ok but at the end the client wants 30... no can do... I guesss this would change the fusion effect timing.

Huge additional note! After doing this, your clips might not fit as well as they did at the lower frame rate. Additional tweaking will be needed, so go through the Timeline and look for gaps. One frame added will make all the difference. You're welcome.

I JUST bought the Studio version of DR and this was my first big test project and I had no way of changing the frame rate back to 25fps. THANK YOU SO MUCH! This will be a huge help in the future. I did loose all of my EQ settings, but it wasn't too hard to set them back correctly.

Thank you for this . This is an awful resolve behaviour. I have no Idea why this would even be locked in the first place. It should always be editable. I understand havening the project at a framerate for hardware compatibility but then it should be editable for the whole project. I would love to know the actual reason for this, not even Avid Media Composer is this rigid. I've recently switched to resolve from both premier and media composer and am really enjoying the wisdom in these video's.

Help: I need to convert from Rec709 to BT2020 or DCI P3 on LG C1. The reason is to display SDR games on HDR by using an HDMI signaling override menu on the TV that allows me to force HLG over SDR and it works amazing because HLG is backwards compatible but the colors look overly saturated. How can I do that color space conversion to get the best results?

One feature I often miss from Premiere Pro is the ability to Match Frame into a Compound clip, such that the Compound timeline opens on the same frame. The Open in Timeline feature does not respect the current playhead position.

Is there going to be any interpolation and, consequently, any frame loss if I change 60fps in clip attributes to 30fps, then put the clip on the 30fps timeline, and speed it up to 200% (to get the normal speed instead of slo-mo)?

Honestly I was hesitant to watch this tutorial because it was a whopping 9 minutes and wanted to get an answer quick and usually 10 minute videos have alot of filler, but him explaining WHY it HAPPENED and how to fix it and then how to basically get by it without making a new entire project with the timeline trick really helped alot, thanks Darren!

Thanks for the video, as I only started with Resolve 18 recently and this was giving me trouble. I had been using movie studio and I was able to set the frame rate at the time of rendering and not get locked in. This has led me to another question that I cannot find and answer to, and that is rendering slow motion videos. Explanation : - My Galaxy can film at 240fps and plays back at 30fps when downloaded onto the PC with the result that the image is showing in slow motion. Now what I want to do is edit the footage so that a portion leading up the slow motion portion is playing at "normal" speed, then the slow motion segment, and back to "normal" after. A friend showed me how to do it in Premiere Pro by re-timing the lead slow motion portion to play back at what we would term normal speed, but I cannot find any resolve tutorials showing me how. I cannot afford Premiere Pro. Edit: I can edit the video to do this in the Galaxy phone, but I don't have the finesse as I do on the PC.

If all your projects are at 25 fps why not change the default template to 25 fps? That way you would never have to remember to change it.

For anyone interested here is another work-around that I use to change the project setting entirely... @Darren Mostyn maybe you could make a short video of this to make it easier to follow? (-Back-up your project as this involves temporary deleting.) -Select everything in the media pool, copy all, delete. -Change the frame rate of your now empty project. -Next import any other clip (If it isn't the desired frame rate just hit "Don't Change) this 'locks' your frame-rate at the chosen rate. -I am on Resolve 17, on Resolve 18 you may need also drop the clip onto a timeline as this has been updated as Darren detailed above! -Then paste back in everything else - and you're all done! This updates the timeline frame rate of the re-pasted timelines automatically so if you want some to stay as they were set them as independent as Darren detailed above. Skipping the importing other clip/timeline stage will mean Resolve reverts the Frame-Rate without asking so don't skip it! I like this process instead of copying things across to a new project as it keeps all of my other project settings intact. P.s. Reminder to never delete things in your project without a back-up first!

I understand this is very helpful but this method does not bring the audio channels details maybe the color page corrections also missing. I had problems many times when I have got projects with complete edit like a music video and convert all of that from 24 to 25 just need to re-edit most of the audio effects, transitions and more. I hope this will has a better solution, but this video is really helpful, thank you Darren!

AS a little Addition to that - when copying from a 24 to 25 Timeline for ex. this will lead to single black frames between clips - is there a way to avoid this?

Need help guys... Recently got a PC instead of Mac and on iMovie, I would simply drag my gopro footage which is 120fps into the timeline and the footage would play at normal speed after taking the slow motion off in the settings... Then I could just split sections of the video and slow motion certain parts easily... Now.. When I drag in these clips to Davinci, it puts the fps to 60 but the video is sped up. I try setting it to 120fps and it goes even fast... I have tried changing the fps to 30 24 and so on but it does nothing... Why is it doing this?

Right click the clip in media page and select clip attributes > video. Here you can set the desired frame rate for playback

What if i have 60 fps abd 24 fps clips in my time line and i wat to slow some of them , when i try toslow 60 fps clip it seem it automaticaly 24 fps because of timeline setting and when i slow it 50% frame rate aotomaticaly being 12 fps , please help !!
