Living a small quiet life in Bali has been much better for me compared to big city living and chasing an exciting urban lifestyle. Urban loneliness and isolation in big cities is a very real problem experienced by more people than you think. It’s not enough just to live in close proximity to many people. We need to reach out and connect with each other in order to form meaningful relationships and feel like we really belong but this is much harder to achieve in busy city lifestyles. Uprooting and moving to an environment in Bali that suits me has improved my mental health greatly. What about you? How do you deal with such loneliness?

I don’t exactly feel lonely, but I’ve been having a hard time reconnecting with friends lately-with the pandemic it was so easy to throw myself into everything that I wanted to grow and develop inside myself and spend time with family. Branching back out has been difficult, especially when I’ve spent much of my time trying to develop myself to escape the 9-5. I’ve always felt displaced in traditional work environments-just disconnected. I’m smart, I work hard, so on paper I should “belong” but I’ve never felt like I have-too creative, too skeptical, too “outside the box”. I find your story and channel inspiring! Thank you for just being awesome!

Hey hey I love your nick!! It conjures up a very specific n appealing image in my imagination lol! Anyway thanks for the sweet msg I loved what u share. I kinda hv the same feeling. I really somewhat (n quietly) rejoiced over the pandemic period cos I was so happy alone inside home doing my own creative stuff being in my own world. Such a relief from the hustle bustle of normal life to have that extended introspective period.

I don’t think I feel the need to branch back out though. Is it something you feel u really truly need to do or is it just cos u feel it’s what’s “normal”?

Bear in mind people like u n me may be just outliers cos we crave for different things mentally that others don’t, that may explain why u always feel a lil out at the workplace, but I don’t think also u shd feel that as a disadvantage. I wouldn’t want to be like all of them really, if I asked myself honestly. I like me.

Dear Jean. I'd never commented on anyone posts like I do with yours. I feel like I have many some feelings in common. You're both have wonderful life experiences. I'm an introvert formed by the environment of childhood and family. My childhood was in a village far from crowds, but I was happy with a simple life. Now I live in an urban area that is too crowded, congested and a lot of traffic jams. But I feel lonely. I just feel comfortable with my little family at home. Sometimes, I want to go back to the village. Live simply. With a modest frequency. But here we are, life is simple but simple life isn't easy. We just have to be grateful for all that we have got. Thank you for sharing your feelings and experiences with all of us. Love you both. ❤️❤️❤️

Hi Oom, so true, and thank you for the wise words. In creating the content on this channel I’ve realised so few people understand what u just said - that life can be simple but a simple life isn’t per se easy. I think there’s a growing movement of people moving away from cities back to the rural areas, like from Jakarta to bAli for example, I’ve met quite a few of them now. Maybe u can slowly move towards this idea with your family if it’s what truly suits you. Truly meaningful changes takes time to manifest with slow and steady action. I will be rooting for you!

Living in one of the country in Europe, high salary, busy everyday hussling for money and yet feeling lonely, unhappy but not ungrateful and still longing for inner peace and simple countryside life - a place where I used to and grew back on my childhood days. Love your reflection content, thought this thoughts and feeling of mine is invalid but am not. More power to your channel❤.

the moment I find myself most lonely is when I worked in hustle bustle Jakarta and browsing Facebook to add more friends and updating my status to gain attention... it was the worst phase of my life. I ended up being a people pleaser to those who don't even care about me. one thing I learned, we all must first love ourselves first.

Love that u shared this. TOTALLY get what u went through because I went thru the exact same thing myself sadly. That particular “happening” image about myself I was manufacturing on FB in order to kinda stand out from the crowd n find connection cos I was just so lost amidst all the people. I felt drowned out. And who am I kidding? I ain’t happening I love staying in w friends n family haha

I went to Jakarta international school back in the late 80s. Bali was a gem back then. Uluwatu was our surf spot. There was literally nothing in Uluwatu. We had to make our way down thru the brush to surf all day. Epic times back then! crazy development now. Bali has forever changed. Way too many tourists now. Overdeveloped. I am forever grateful i got to experience and live in Indonesia back in the 80s and 90s. Bali Dong….Gila bule! Jakarta-Sel.

Been there done that years ago, so I feel u 😅. What ever inner peace we seek, it's already in all of us, it's not a place nor anything, we just have to know who is inside us and listen. if sadness and happiness are feelings that rightfully yours to manage, like a TV with remote control then it's up to us what we want to watch, until u wish to share it.. Smile and be grateful we are alive and still have the calling from inside of us, don't ignore it.. Cheers

wise words! But i definitely find it easier to maintain my inner peace when i'm in the mountains in Thailand or here in the rural quiet areas of Bali, and i struggled so hard when stuck in the chaos of Tokyo, or Singapore or surrounded by everyone just chasing wealth in Dubai :( must meditate more to build up the inner emotional discipline la!

Totally agree with your perspective regarding relationships in urban environment. I feel that is hard to build real and meaningful relationship because even if you are genuine, this may not be the case from the counterparty. Many people approach others for materials and/or other objective which is not really about the friendship. Some people may even hurt you to get their objective.
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova 2 года назад
yeah very true. I was very disappointed with all my friendships from work. At the end of the day most of them turned out to be circumstantial and transactional relationships when i had invested myself somewhat more sincerely. Ah well. Love this video Jean! It takes great courage and a leap of faith to do what you did where i think most people including myself is struggling in. The usual path of getting a good education, getting a good job, rising up the ranks and etc just isn’t the only way anymore. It takes awareness i guess as the first step to know what we want and then to move forward with that. Great video once again.

Hi Jean, I am 39 years old Indonesian residing in New York City. I recently discovered your videos on RU-vid, and I find them all to be really motivating and inspirational. I used to believe that having a successful life means having a wonderful career in a large city with good salary, which also means I don't need to save much money, buy whatever I want, and spend my money carelessly without further consideration of my financial situation. Until I was laid off two years ago - Thank God, I get to start over with my life now. Your videos encourage me to consider the long term plan that I need to have for myself and what I truly desire in this life. Actually, I hope to retire in Bali too someday. Thank you once again for all your wonderful videos and I wish you have a wonderful day! :)

This really resonates with me. I'm a bit of an introvert, I love quiet and simple things. I see myself living this simple lifestyle somewhere other than where I am now. I've never made friends easily so being alone is not a problem. People find me strange because I don't follow what everyone else accepts as the norm. What holds me back are family obligations and guilt. Otherwise I'd be gone in a heart beat. I can only live through others like you that took the initiative. Be genuine and live your best life.

Love your very reflective videos, Jean. Thank you. You are so right- loneliness is something we all must deal with to a greater or lesser extent. I think for some, maybe most, it's a challenge never fully conquered but rather a natural consequence of our humanity. In my struggles with loneliness I have found it helpful to avoid the common "tools" for relief such as social media, television or the many other methods to distract oneself. Instead, I acknowledge the feelings and the more intense the loneliness, the greater effort I put into recognizing it and allowing it to be felt. It's counterintuitive, as my natural reaction to any uncomfortable emotion is to avoid it in any way possible. But any form of avoidance only provides transient relief. Using the recognition approach I have found the intensity of my loneliness has become less over time, and there's some real comfort in knowing I have a tool that always works. Meditation also helps deal with any uncomfortable emotion. I think humans are just naturally burdened by loneliness, possibly due to evolution since our distant ancestors were constantly amongst others, for the most part. So, the need for social interaction is natural but these days we are being more and more socially isolated either voluntarily or because society has changed and there's less and less need to be physically close to one another. It's no wonder so many are searching for relief from the anxiety/discomfort associated with loneliness. Best wishes to you and yours on Bali! Oh, and here's a possible topic for a future video- it would be interesting to know how life has been changing over time on Bali, if at all. I know more people are moving there, for example so I am wondering if it is impacting you and the locals, for better or worse?
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova 2 года назад
hi Jeff, thank you for such a thoughtful and detailed comment that's so insightful. I too often avoid confronting my emotions head on. Its just a natural instinct for self protection maybe? but yes you are right, transient relief. it was far more difficult when i was younger, but with age i've started to lean into the loneliness and try practicing acceptance about what the situation is. but its sad to see places like Tokyo where people just shut themselves into their apartments and die in there and don't get discovered for weeks..... says a lot about our state of society today. SM like insta is just poison!

how very true, urban loneliness. have been trying to find a word for the feeling. now that i have my own family, and my oasis that is my home and gardening , i no longer feel this urban loneliness. i no longer need to be with so-called friends and people whom i try hard to fit in and pretends to be one of them. noise, they are now. ultimately, we seek a place and a few we can relates with, and this urban loneliness will disappear on its own. this is a nice and enlightening video, thanks 🙏🏻

Yes, urban loniness is real. So for me, I pray, meditate and sing spiritual songs to connect myself with God daily. It has been wonderful. Connection with people is so superficial nowadays but I am still trying to do so at work. Nice people are hard to come by, at least in my case. Recently I hired a Burmese maid to look after my aging mum. She has had previous employment with another Singaporean family who ill treated her. But I made sure she is comfortable to work for me and well provided for. After a few months, she told me, after me, she wouldn't want to work for another Singaporean family. Her own Burmese friends often shared how hard it is to work for Singapore families. Why do people have to be so mean? Then again, there are good maids and there are also bad maids. I am lucky to have a good maid. I told her, I want her to experience kindness in this world. I find people relationships in Singapore very superficial and artificial. Whether it is at work or outside. People in Singapore generally live in the mind whilst the people in Bali live in the heart. I guess it’s the mindset and the spiritual development of each country. The Singapore mind is overly developed while its spirituality is still very primitive. As for work, I just use it as a mean to provide me financially. I’d wish to be financially free but it’s not easy. I guess I can only do so at 65 when my cpf life starts. As for now, I will work with life balance and get some passive income while just waiting for that time to come. My wants are fewer than most people. Most importantly, I take good care of my health through proper diet and exercises. Mentally and spiritually, I am relying on meditation and prayer.

Hey Jean , here’s my story. I’m more or less as similar as you. I’m 22 this year and am struggling to connect to people , it’s not i can’t connect or vibe w the right ones or whatever, but it’s just i’m tired of all this small talks w ppl in work alr, all bc i know they won’t be my “ BFF “ so why waste time ? it’s like i’ll force myself to join in js bc ppl will think i’m a loner or whatsoever. There’s no prob in me talking to ppl or vibing, it’s js i feel it’s so meaningless since they won’t be w u forever base on the vibe we talk/connect. I’m happy being alone by myself and that’s what i want but my work requires me to talk to ppl which i kindda dislike ( due to my past ) and that’s why i’ve stoppped all this and j wna be alone. Like i’ll want to move to somewhr rural as well in the future. Personally, bc of my introverted nature, i wouldn’t want to talk to ppl that won’t be w me forever, u get it ahaha. Any advice u can give a young 22yo guy here ? Would love to connect more with u if possible.

Lucky you, the right person has certainly been placed on your path in life. Happily ever together! Other than that I'm glad the loneliness has been soothed by your choice of being in Bali, but its getting crowded by the day. Hopefully you'll still enjoy some little undiscovered corner. I certainly can resonate with what you feel in the whole video. Its surreal, like seeing my younger life summarized in 9 mins. I thought the owl in your garden was really cute, and in the end perched in V's hand? So tame! Got another dog huh? 😃

Haha yeah, actually before V I thought I will end up growing old alone just hopefully w good friends in my life. It felt like fate though if u knew the details of our story. Second time around kinda thing. Btw that owl is actually our neighbor’s pet Sofa! So she’s super tame. She just got confused that day about our houses so she came n hung out w us all day that day lol

Since I was a little boy. I like being alone, often imagining the life I want. Even when there are many people around me, I prefer to stay silent and daydream or just play alone. I became a loner because of the situation in my family and environment. In my family I felt isolated when my old brother was always treated special, even when I was 6 years old after the birth of my little sister, which my parents really hoped for. I feel more and more left out. So I feel like I always want to go away from home even though I have to live as a bum. But the courage to leave the house was not enough, so I always tried to survive into adulthood to leave the life I didn't want. Then when I grew up and entered married life, the reality of marriege life that I had to build, a simple and happy small family was never achieved. In the end, disappointment and failure always happen in everything, even though I always keep learning and trying to improve myself. Currently I use a lot of time to be alone and try to pay off all kinds of debts that arise from failure and disappointment, while I make a life plan and learn again to step little by little towards my life goals and hope that God will still allow me to live until my hopes come true. However. I always gratefull for everything happen in my life that GOD gave to me. I think you more lucky. And you should gratefull too. Because there other unfortuned people around us.

hi Karya, thanks for sharing your story in such detail. Sorry to hear you've spent most of your life steeped in loneliness. I don't understand the part about debts arising from failure and disappointment though. How does that link up? But despite all of life's challenges, its true that we shd all live life with an attitude of gratitude. I definitely believe in that very strongly and i give thanks everyday for all my blessings.

@Karya Mode Industri - Thanks for sharing some details of your personal situation with us. I can underdstand your situation very well. When parents treat children differently, it creates a void in the child that gets less attention and hence creates other unexpected situations and challenges for that individual in life. There are 3 siblings (myself included) in my family and I am the eldest. I was always a quiet and reserved type of person that kept to myself. My family misunderstood me often because of my quiet nature and even used it against me to hurt me. I am 54 years old and learned my lessons in life. I wish you a lot of courage and hope that your goals will become a reality soon in the future. All the very best to you! 🙏

@@JeanVoronkova human design is super interesting! I love learning about it. I totally understand and even thinking the grass is greener in a western country isn’t true. Many people are not happy there even though they have what society says they should have like a mortgage and a house! I will totally understand and its not small at all. It’s a big achievement to have the guts to move away from a career like you did to follow your dreams. Not many people will do that unfortunately and they will be angry or sad inside that they didn’t pursue their dreams. I totally admire what you have done! 😊 I live in Canggu just because of the vegan options haha. I love Uluwatu though its like my little getaway place!

I just found your channel and I must say its very enlightening and thought provoking. I would love to see a video on how you two met! and more so about the yourselves and your family ...etc. I hope that's not to invasive! On an other note, we are retiring next year end of 2023, and would like your thoughts on whether 8 weeks would be sufficient to cover the following places - Vietnam - Thailand - Bali This will be our 1st time in South-East Asia so its all new to us, we are in our early 60's active and youthful still! We have to be in Perth Australia on March 1st 2024 Would you recommend losing one of these places? If so which one? Thank you and keep up the good vibes/ spirits.
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
Hi Tony, thanks for leaving this note. Very excited for your plans! Happy to share my thoughts based on our own past decade in these 3 places. I spent 8 years in Vn (Vitaly 12) - we loved living in Mui Ne and the whole country in general but bear in mind this is largely cos we are kitesurfers. Vn is also a very acquired taste in my opinion. The first time I visited HCM city I spent 3 days there having an absolute headache from all the noise and chaos and was only too glad to leave, saying I’ll never be back! Funnily enough I ended up spending 8 years there in the end n loving it! But for long term stay, Vietnamese Language is a huge barrier cos it’s really hard to pick up, n ultimately Bali has better waves for us plus a culture we love more - it’s more spiritual, quiet, communal. Hence our final destination is here. But again, that’s from a surf+love Asian food perspective. Out of the 3 Thailand attracts me the least cos it’s not a great surf destination overall but wow the food and people are surely awesome n they got some lovely beaches too. U def shd visit all 3 to decide, but 8 weeks to cover all 3 isn’t really enough to choose one for keeps. Hopefully u can find more time and if u do, def cover these spots : Bali - Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu, Vietnam - HCM, Nha Trang, Dalat (all v diff feels), and Thailand (Bangkok, Chiangmai). This is just the basic starters to give u a bit of a sense for each country tho n they r all v different types of places! Quite honestly u cd spread ur retirement across the 3 over like 8 years and then u’ll really know which one is ur cup of tea 🤣🤣🤣
