Finally, a person of color talking about river cruises!! I am so interested in river cruising but also a solo river cruise. I'm of the age 65 but do river cruises offer solo pkgs or are there many people who take river cruises as a solo person? I live in the U.S. I have been on ocean cruises before but interested in river cruises. Thank you Sylvia

We just finished a Danube River Cruise with Avalon. Budapest to Bucharest. It was our first time out since the Pandemic and it was so liberating. Also, as a Celiac, they were very attentive to my dietary needs. The chef meets one on one with all who have dietary needs. Everyday I’d get a special menu showing what I could eat without concerns and what items they would make special accommodations so I could enjoy that item.

Avalon is excellent when it comes to food and dietary accommodations. Like you, I never had to worry during my cruise that they could cater for my gluten free dietary accommodation. . Now that you are back, are you thinking you'd do another river cruise in the future?

Another thing, how is accessibility among the different River Cruise lines? I've heard few river cruise ships have elevators so it can be hard if you can't handle stairs. Is that true? Are there lines that are better or worse for that?
Hi Maurine, The major river cruise lines like AMA, Viking, Avalon, Uniworld etc., all have ships with elevators. River Cruising in general doesn't have the same accessibility features like ocean cruises, however, I've had a client in a wheelchair (the collapsible kind) do a river cruise with Emerald Waterways and she was well taken care of, still got to do excursions and loved it. Keep in mind also that Europe is not like North America, They've got a lot of cobblestone streets, some of which are steep and not a lot of ramps like we have here. Hope that helps.
