As an architect, I took particular interest in Bjorn’s collaboration with Soen-Zoen. This landscape architect (garden maker) listens carefully to him and finds ways to add a professional, creative touch to what Bjorn has initially envisioned. With such open discussions as these two are able to have, magic can and does happen. This is what I have enjoyed most about my profession. Bjorn’s story telling and video editing are top notch. I am captured by the chronicles of the relocation to Japan and wish Bjorn and family the very best as they move forward in Kyoto.

For this design you're "growing from seed" - can't wait to see this come to life Bjorn!! I especially like the granite monkey poles, this garden will be around for a long time.

The design looks great and you are living your dream. I wish you every success. My question would be: what is the business model? Is it escorted bonsai tours, finding and curating bonsai collections for others, running workshops, working on customer bonsai trees, or commercially growing and cultivating trees, or attendance and public speaking at events? All of the above? Does the space cover everything you need or envisage for your business? Or will the business activity happen elsewhere? With the landscaped garden and house, it doesn’t seem much space is left for the business. Looking forward to you breaking ground and starting the build, and finally being able to show us the completed project.

In Australia you'd probably have to do all the designs yourself, be massively overquoted, and then have to beg them to complete the job on time & budget (still wouldn't be done on either). Sensational looking plan, love the depth of thought that you've put into it to keep the important traditional parts but also ensure the bonsai themselves are the highlight

Love the design and can’t wait to see this come together. I know your wife wants a persimmon tree, but I would highly recommend you not put one in. The fruit is insidious and if you aren’t picking them up daily, they will turn into a rotting mess, especially if you have gravel around. Best decision I made was to remove one in my yard after we moved in. Just my two cents 🍻

Wow! What an amazing journey. Seems like you have found the perfect match with Soneson ( forgive spelling errors). You are doing amazing things and I thank you for sharing them with me and the world. I’m new to bonsai but very passionate about it and am curious how one can make a living. Not my business at all so feel free to ignore this question, but how do you plan to make a living with this house/ in Japan? The running a nursery I understand as a revenue making business. The how to make money in Japan is where I’m lost. I know you’ve figured it out. Just wondering what’s the secret? It seems like budget is not an issue for you and I’m happy for you! Congratulations on the success you have found in life!

At 10:35, you talk about the neighbors looking into your bathtub, and you consider planting a large deciduous tree. Would an evergreen be better, as it would obviously block the view even in winter?

They are from the mountains. I’m guessing the nursery owns the land and can harvest the trees. Usually they root prune the season before to reduce shock when it is removed. YT “Japanese garden tv” has several videos of this.

I don't get it, I thought he would build a new nursery in Japan. This is a house garden with only few trees, surely not enough bonsai space...😢

Most municipalities have zoning laws that try to maintain commercial properties in commercial zones and residential in residential zones. Having a formal garden has everything to do with having guests in a formal setting while maintaining private residents. It's the kind of place where you can entertain formal guests (think business) and maintain a private paradise. I'm not sure about the business model Bjorn is thinking about but I don't have any doubts that going forward his videos won't disappoint.
