Hello Ronny, I love the 79 build. You have built it to suit your needs and not everybody else’s.

The four seat conversion is the best 👌 thing you did to this vehicle. I'm sure alot of other 79 owners will be thinking of doing this, after seeing yours. Your kids are going love it.

Especially that most 5 seater are rather a 4.5 seater and it's rated as a "before I'll walk I squeeze in" seat, so rarely used. In that case With the conversation you actually get more space.

Totally awesome build. Many other people throw everything on when they do a build, because they can. Anyone can do that. It's fantastic you have used your experience, preferences and discretion and included just what you need for your intended use. It's an effective and efficient application of components, accessories and money. Less is definitely more. Very clever. Again, awesome build. It's also fantastic you are attached to the car.

Ronny, love it mate. I love the fact you've not changed things for the sake of it (snorkel), haven't put a canopy on (like everyone else does) and the reason you kept your leaf springs. Awesome 79, love the 'light weight' setup you have. Keep up the good work, look forward to it featured in a trip soon, it's been a while :)

Enjoying your pragmatic approach to this rebuild. Have to respect your lived experience with some of your choices as well. 79’s always look more capable without a canopy. Probably gonna upset some of the bolt-on send-it crew out there but there’s always another 4WD 24/7 around the corner for them!

As someone who owns and daily drives a stretched vehicle, you need to know there are downsides: First is a _significant_ increase in turning radius ..My 48 Willys was stretched 24 inches. This increases the 'U-turn' capability from two lanes to _four._ To effectively pull a U-turn in traffic, I need a four lane divided highway. Period. This makes parking lots a tremendous pain in the ass. Second, this adversely affects the break-over angle of the vehicle. If you're off-roading _at all_ this is a big deal. Why? Because after stretching a vehicle, the breakover angle is significantly decreased for a given tire size. The only way to increase your breakover angle is to lift the vehicle and/or fit larger tires. In my case, I'm _very_ limited in fitting larger tires (stock is 29", currently running 32.5"). Why? Because my vehicle has a wide frame compared to its overall width. Larger tires get less turning angle and exacerbate the already heavily-impacted turning radius. Then, the design of the vehicle is such that even a 6-inch suspension lift wouldn't create any appreciable clearance for larger tires with respect to turning angle. What I'm saying is that there's a lot more to consider with stretching a vehicle than just weight distribution.

I think if I had a dedicated 4WD I'd run a manual, but when it has to be my daily too, automatic is way easier. Love the videos Ronny, can't wait to see on the East Coast sometime soon.
@SiCrewe
@SiCrewe 2 года назад
I think it's probably indisputable that a good auto' is the best choice for off-roading but I still worry about reliability and strength. If I was building an off-road toy I'd probably bung an auto box in it but, for a daily driving, I prefer the simplicity of a manual. If I was daily-driving in a place where a manual was a chore, I'd probably be driving a BMW rather than ANY kind of 4x4.
@mark2073
@mark2073 2 года назад
I think an auto is better for technical crawling. No clutch starts and you can modulate the brake and the gas. But for long trips where a break down would be bad, for sure manual. That's why I have both...

I've had two leafy cruisers and two coil setups , coil cruiser is the king different animal you won't be strutting the high sides like a ifs or leafy. Parts like coils are very easy to find not that I've broken one, you also can tune your suspension so much better with good supirior remote res shocks with coils. Bit of an outlay but so much better drive and way more capable vehicle with coils

i see nobody complained about the rear narrow axle. people spend over 100, 000 on a troopy but there is NO option for Tyre pressure pump, These days you should be able to let your tyres down while on the move to sandy tracks and start pumping them up as you come of the sandy tracks, then you dont have to stop. i have a old hj75 my forever bus. standard everything. i am 71 and i am using the 4x4 every day as i am a surfer. cheers

Just starting to watch the episode. Yeah leaf springs are good for outback. Maybe if they put rhe pack on top of the axle to increase clearence it prob would be better like a hilux. Yeah it would involve a flat spring with maybe a leaf on top to reduce the axle twisting. Coils = vic high country

Amazing job on the 79! I have a question tho, a itch that dosent go away so to speak, so, this is hipotetical, one can splurge on a vehicle, what would be the cost to building lets say a 76 into something similar be (not counting shipping to australia and back) north of 200k or lower (vehicle price included)?

top three mods on my 1948 Willys CJ2A? #1: 24" vehicle stretch adding extra cargo space and giving a 108" wheelbase #2: Engine upgrade from a L134 flathead 4cyl to 225ci/3.7L V6 Dauntless for good power that _doesn't_ over-stress the rest of the original driveline #3: four-wheel disc brakes. Honorable mention: 38 gallon / 144L frame-mounted amid-ships replacement fuel tank. Drops the center of gravity and provides about 400 mile / 644km range. I'm hoping to increase the mileage from 9mpg / 26L/100km to at least 15mpg / 15.8L/100km with fuel injection and an overdrive unit. This would increase the range to 570miles/917km with an ultimate goal of 650+ miles / 1050km on 38 gallons of fuel.

I took my 79 on it's first beach sand weekend. i came home with the chasis full, the fuel tank protection full and every other ledge and channel full of sand. is there a way that i can stop or minimise this. as it took a considerable amout of time to flush salty sand out and i still think there is more in there. If you lower your tyre pressure to the point where you can drive slow enough that the sand doesn’t flick up as much you hardly get any sand in your chassis rails etc. You should be able to putt along and not get bogged in most situations.
