I don’t know if anyone else is feeling it lately, but the atmosphere at parties has changed...and it isn’t for the better. There doesn’t seem to as much enthusiasm and passion for the music as there was say five or six years ago. :(
That's cuz everything is either psy trance or the mainstream type Coachella or techno and it really has only been tolerable cuz of the likes of the asot tent. But the mix of ur radio pop I'm in Miami bitch attitudes and then the plur community that are asot fans don't mix with the drunk vibe so much or the hype and dj has to tell u to dance n not the music's job is how we know when shit is going wromg. But I wish thr hell I were there this yr for armin 4hr set was epic! And it had the classic vibes. So did his set last yrs armin was amazing but I pretty much only pay attention to it cuz of him now tiesto used to make good tunes but went mainstream idk these new ppl like I don't like this fort night marsh mellow guy could be litetally anyone so good idea maybe but it's the music and that demographic he brings I think what's been the nail in the coffin.
Festival music is predictable. Big room has a lot of bad taste. Valentino Khan plays the same tracks he did years ago. Flosstradamus the same. Real Djing goes a long way and helps. Always be a avenue for real DJing. Drugs can only do so much so many times. I get bored at shows hearing the same shit.
You guys are right - back in the early days of big US parties, the people in the crowd were mainly true dance music fans and the music reflected that. Now there’s too many tryhards and insta-darlings more worried about getting ‘fucked up’ and ‘photo ops’ than enjoying good music. The Colonel Sanders was a new low though - even for five minutes. It’s the same in Europe: the scene is now far too commercial with radio-friendly sounds like Future House completely taking over. What I’d give to go back to the old days :’(
Thank you for always sharing you’re knowledge with us, giving tips and helping people pursue their dreams. If only the world had more people like you. Sending good vibes all the way from Chicago 😎
You are my main reason why I go to Ultra every year to be in front row and get ready for your crazy set! Hope you will be there every year now! Really want to see you back on the main stage. Of course would like to see producer tutorial soon :)
Awesome episode! Yeah! Definitely play Ultra 2020😁! I'll see you next year! Perhaps, come to Minnesota and play at the Rev Ultra Lounge soon 🙏🙏🙏. Great little venue to rally the squad 💥
I'm turning 16 on Thursday. I have been watching every live set of all the main stage DJs every single time I could since the age of 12. I've been recording mixes by learning Laidback Luke and Tchami's sets. I have learned so much. Especially from you Luke, or Uncle Luke lol. Keep it real, Like always :)
I came to leave a comment just to motivate you to keep doing this! Having this type of interaction with a DJ like yourself is the greatest thing! Keep it up! Best regards brother!
Hey Luke! This was a great episode. I’ve been going to MMW for 6 years now and this year, it felt a little different. I’ve never done Ultra but I think the change of location fractured a connection. Awesome interviews and insight. Peace from Turks and Caicos Isl!
I love the vlog! So great that you gave a shoutout to James Hype, I think that currently he is one of the best DJs out there, his technique is just amazing! Totally reminds of Laidback Luke in 2012, 2013, 2014 in DJ sounds! Keep it up Luke! Also great that you had people that are actually running shows in Miami talk about this years MMW!
Good episode! Enjoyed it - I think it would be good if you had a split screen view of the crowd's reaction and subtitles of your thoughts of what tracks to play next based on the crowd's reaction 👌 That would be really useful in helping people understanding how to read a crowd!
Hey LaidBackLuck i love mixing on the fly ..It keeps your mind challenged and its a different set everytime.. Lets weed out the real from the jukebox operators anyone can press play but a DJ searches the right spot and mixs while it plays .. Take care LBL 👆👆👈👉
What's your opinion,do you think that the overall edm scene in the mainstream is getting downwards.Does it reach its peak now?2012 to 2016 was the era of EDM
Actually I think it started around 2009 or 2010, especially when a lot of the radio hits of that time had EDM influences. Much like how many artists are trying to ride the hip-hop/rap wave today
The art of DJing is great and all and as a DJ and Producer myself I understand the technical expertise it takes when I hear something live but for the average joe in the crowd next to me who has no idea what BPM even stands for there is no motivation (for me at least) to get funky and do stuff live/on the spot. At the end of the day when the 95% in the crowd that don’t know a lick about real DJing hear a flub in a set they’re going to be like “wtf” but when Guetta plays a prerecorded and already perfect set that has no flaws, guess who the Average Joe thinks is the better DJ...
Guess you didn't watch much guetta sets cause he doesn't make pre-recorded. Maybe you're reffering a tracklist preparation. I know is not the best producer but as DJ I think he can do his shit, he also does some mistakes.
kashemiro you remember his 2012 Tomorrowland set? Lol. The man does the bare minimum when he’s up on stage DJing “live”. Even after, I’ve seen Guetta live and watched his Ultra live streams and can pick out parts of his set that are 110% prerecorded. The man dropped “Like A Bitch” to open his set a couple years ago then transitioned into house music. Takes a mad experienced and practiced DJ to make that seamless transition...especially live in front of thousands.
i really don't give a fuck if he does dj or not. if u are the "Real Deal" and u really want to prove that u are a true DJ, do what A-Track does. Nowadays it's about making money, not about craft or other shits, and i tend to agree with this mindset. Starving artist says on you if you think that u need dem "skills" to DJ. Just prepare a set for every type of crowd and ur done.
@@LorD3able to SOME people it's about making money. To others, we actually respect the artform and would gladly starve if it ment to be true to our sound. That's what the real problem is with some new DJs, greedy fame hungry Chad's who just want people to like them.
Congrats on live dj ing the top 100, I'm explaining my boss I watch your videos and I have respect for you And all he can say = his music is driving me nuts
hey luke you probably dont do this anymore but can you upload more videos like your in my mind #5! i just started djing and i came across this video! i really like seeing the method behind the magic! i find it very inspiring to see how your mind works with hot cues scratches, and all the tricks up your sleeve. i hope you dont mind but im going to take some of your tricks! hahaha keep all the content coming man love it all!
Dance music is changing. You were the first DJ I ever really enjoyed, saw you play at Amnesia for cream opening party back in 2013. It was incredible, the atmosphere was unreal and people were actually having fun. The last few festivals I have gone to have been nothing but bad vibes. The music is completely uninspired and lifeless. Everyone is only there for group pics and drugs, and as an avid dance music lover and producer, it makes me really sad. I hope that passionate guys like you will be the future of the scene someday.
Luke, once again an amazing vlog with a great insight into the DJ industry. Could you express your opinion about DJs buying views for the ULTRA sets on RU-vid?
@@coolkidwithswag Oliver Heldens Twitter: “This year again I spot (big) DJs doing it,” he says in his tweet. “What’s ur opinion on this? I refuse to participate in this, cause people r not stupid, it’s very easy to recognize the fake views (view/like/comment ratio), so why do people do this??”
Yo! I went to hs with Grut. Anyone who knew him then never would have imagined he would have got this big! He never did anything in English 4, but some how got by. It’s absolutely crazy!
When are you going to do another in my mind video? I love those videos and watching you gives me so many ideas as a beginner dj. You teach me so much in a short amount of time and they are also just so entertaining. Plus they give me hope that my dream is possible too!
From a Miami native, resident and person who is close to people who are close to Ultra...ULTRA did NOT want to move. They wanted to remain in their downtown/bayfront location, but the city of Miami would not renew their contract to use the bayfront venue. If it was their choice, it would have remained in downtown Miami.
Hey laidback Luke, I have a very serious question.. I am an aspiring DJ/Producer it's all I think about and all I have ever wanted to do since the age of 6. I work a full time position job and pretty much work 7am - 8pm what is the best way to seriously start getting into mixing, production, DJing ? I already watch your tutorials but I'm more of a hands on type of learner what should I do ?
The reason for the move was due to the residents in front of Bayfront Park complaining about the noise, eventually it came down to the City of Miami to make the final decision to kick them out.
Ultra's new location didn't ruin the festival for me, but it did ruin my friends' experiences. Ultra tried their best, but it's clear that all the amenities they have in place aren't enough to keep up with all these people going down that ONE road to Virginia Key. We had to deal with extremely long lines for rides back to the mainland of Miami and my friends (many who had never been to Ultra before) said that they didn't enjoy the festival that much because of the super long walks and the fact that the mainstage is on concrete, which was honestly very hard to dance on for 8 hours. I also went to Ultra last year when they had the Bayfront Park location and I had an amazing time! to be honest, this year was a let down because of the location (outside of resistance because Beyer and Cox killed it). In Bayfront Park there was a longer wait to get in, but the mainstage was a much shorter walk, everything was more accessible and it was VERY easy to get home, and the mainstage was on grass! so easy for your feet who wants to dance on concrete for 9 hours?
Being true that KFC uncle was funny on stage but I think that stage is very prestigious, and is a dream of DJs and producers like me. Though it was little funny but it was also an insulate. They could have bought with a new generation of DJ to ultra that would have been better I think.
I would love to go to Miami Music Week. But when it’s SO expensive to book the hotel, buy tickets for the event, and get flights from the UK, it’s just not possible to do. Especially when you’re trying to save and build a career in music.
yea what luke said is very very true about diving deep into djing technical skills, i see lots of producer that becoming a dj, they didn't dive into djing as deep as they are into producing. It is such a shame. djing is a lot of fun but when people only see it as smooth 8 bar mixing....duuh im so pissed off
Great vlog Luke! Can you do a vlog about gain staging or keeping the volume the same when going from track to track so there isn't a huge drop or increase in the volume?
Hey great channel, just wanted to know what's your take on vinyl coming back ? Record store Day with drum n bass, house etc was huge in London with vinyl just gone , I think it's coming back and djs want to spin it again Labels, art etc so could there be club festival or event with just real vinyl djs again in the future ?
Hey LL since you did mention Jeff Mills. What are your thoughts about Jeff Mills’ style of DJing where he’s more focused on the sound rather than perfection. Or rather correcting mistakes with imperfect technology (if I could say that, or human touch to an audio player). In the days of quantised beats and computer controlled players, how do you think this has affected the art form if I call it that? Like people are so scared to be imperfect that we depend on computer technology more than our own skills now (this might not go down well with most the computer technology companies). Also this is not a digital vs analog debate but when things are so perfect, every DJ now is forced to be a producer and know daws. And I don’t think any Dj would never want to make beats or produce dance music for example because why would they ever want to be a Dj in the first place. So do you think the world of computers has unknowingly shaped the DJ culture in such a way that we are forced to be producers first and then not really care about real Djing, and then be woah look at what Jeff Mills is doing. And then when someone really does something like Jeff Mills people will be like this is not real Djing, right? I’m sure a Dj would be able to tell but I’m sure there’s many DJs in the past already victim to the phenomenon. I’m sorry I couldn’t be anymore clear about what I’m trying to say. Cheers.
It’s good to have a minimalistic planed set. Have one or two track you want to play out. Everything in between should be down to you and the feel of the crowd.
Thanks for helping us boss! Would be great another Dj tutorial. What do you think is better, making the music you want no matter what people say or making something commercial to get yourself on the map?
There is people who really focus on the DJ techniques and mixing styles, but the problem is that if u don't produce any tracks u won't get booked for shit...
Miami was unforgettable again! Glad to have caught up with you. Just thought I'd take the time to let you know why Ultra left from the other grounds. The City of Miami actually voted them out after out-of-town residents moving into the expensive high rises by the old festival grounds complained about the noise. Either way, Ultra lives on. Btw, what lav mic do you use for your vlogs? Looks and sounds very clean.
Hey Laidback Luke just so you know Ultra was kicked out of Bayfront Park by the homeowners association at the condo across the street. They took them to court and Miami City Counsel agreed to kick them out.
hey, DJs cannot use these as there is still a delay between the music being sent from the mixed to the headphones. so it's not in exact time with what actually being played through the PAs. hope that make sense, got loads of dj content on my channel too :)
Admittedly when I started I was already watching lots of your vids Luke, so DJing on the fly is how I learnt...it pre planning really as big as you say it is?
Honestly I kinda don't love how Zedd is switching to CDJs. I mean I don't strongly dislike it and i'm not against him doing it, ever since years ago I always felt like it was just a matter of time until he'd make the switch. Him and his Traktor S4 at shows was one of the things that I felt made his performances inspiringly unique. He kind of silently showed that you don't need that $10,000 dollar set up to pull off a clean show. Fine that he's switching to decks now but I still feel it's important to watch his old sets and realize the greatness that can still be achieved with a less-than-$1000-dollars controller.
yes yes yes yes.......I made it.....Luke could you talk about how to balance playing what you love and what the crowd wants because mostly now if they dont know the song they aren't interested
I don't think Luke is the right person to answer that, of course he read the crowd but a crowd that attend an event with let's say Luke is going to expect twisted house and new music IDs, not Taylor Swift nor David Guetta, nor Angerfist, they are there for whatever Luke is playing and they're usually overhyped so anything seems better at the moment, you can't apply that for your classic club night unless you're super famous
That's it? You and your team choose a different route? Anyway you can explain that into more depth? Title of video was "why I didnt play ultra" and you gave us a 5 second answer in a 10 min video. Anyways.. I saw aphex twin in Brooklyn on April 11th 2019 and I know it's not EDM but that show was the #1 electronic music performance of all time in my opinion.
I was looking forward to hearing your set at Ultra this year. Can't wait until next year. Why don't you have a Podcast like Carl Cox has so we can listen to your sets at these clubs?
Luke, They had to move because Miami officials tried to kill Ultra Music Fest off... said they can not play anymore in that location.. so they had to move
Awe man the life of a superset DJ one can only imagine what it feels like to have a bunch of people come out to dance to you. I thought Colonel Sanders this year at Ultra was hilarious but weird. I never laugh so hard before.
I saw the Ultra livestream and I saw the "DJ" on the title and remembered how bad he was, I was like, "This ought a be good." Oh and I was born in Miami too!
