James walks through why he decided to swap out the original L24 2.4-liter Nissan engine from his 1972 Datsun 240Z and replace it with the iconic Toyota 2JZ powerplant.
James originally planned to build a 3.0-liter stroker engine for the L-Series. Combining a 2.8 engine block, a high-compression 2.4 head, custom pistons, and a crankshaft from a rare diesel version of the 2.8-liter.
Building that engine would yield fantastic power, an amazing soundtrack, and would get the 300 horsepower figure that he had in his head… but would also cost a small fortune (somewhere between £5-10k), and would most probably be a reliability nightmare.
Cue the legendary Toyota 2JZ. With the right modifications - larger throttle bodies, beefier cams, and a well-tuned exhaust manifold - those 300 horses would be his!
So here it is, the heart of his project - a non-turbo 2JZ-G engine sourced from a Lexus GS 300, linked to a W58 five-speed gearbox from the Toyota Supra Mk4.
Tune in for the next video in this series where James takes you through the fabrication of his engine mounts.
