Imagine all the things you can do…off of your phone. Parents be warned.
TEDxTeen opening music by BlackDoe
Ann Makosinski is an 18 year-old student, innovator and entrepreneur. Her first toy was a box of transistors. From there, her interest in science and creating arose. One of her friends in the Philippines got a failing grade because she didn't have any electricity or light to study with at night. As a potential solution, Ann invented a flashlight that ran off the heat of the human hand - the Hollow Flashlight. The invention won her age category at the 2013 Google Science Fair, as well as numerous awards at the Intel Science and Engineering Fair. She appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and was named one of TIMES 30 Under 30. Ann hopes to manufacture her flashlight, bringing the invention to developing countries and including them in emergency kits. Ann also invented the eDrink - a coffee mug that harvests the excess heat of your hot drink and converts it into electricity to charge a phone. Ann debuted the eDrink this October on her second appearance on the Tonight Show.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

You'll also notice that her sentence rhythm goes off a bit. I'm betting that the editor/director decided to edit out the part where she took her shoes off.It's all about optics man:)

I feel like it isnt so simple. The internet can be great and helps entertain you, and generally help us communicate and be social. Though there is a very fine line between watching videos, using social media, talking to friends; and spending 8 hours doing absolutely nothing for a slight amount of attention. I have seen people on Social Media like Tik Tok who shape their entire personality off of doing a dance and getting money. Thats crossing the line. Some people are insane.

@@ameerkherbawi8466 we are most "ourselves" as kids. The communities we grow up in shape our personalities by teaching us what is 'appropriate' and what is not. The childhood she describes was the norm when I was a child -55 years ago in Eastern Europe- we made things, we made up our games and plays, we interacted (argued, reasoned, empathised and laughed and dreamed together). Everything could be turned into a game, boredom did not last long. and one could always just engage with nature around : watch birds, plants, insects or the clouds and make up stories. I loved just to sit outside and sing or make up a dance and imagined I was performing on stage..... I cannot remember depressed or hyperactive children. We definitely did not have much but the world was full of wonders! Couldn't we give childhood back to our children and grandchildren????????

But it sucks because know days us children can't do any of that anymore, when I walk outside there's tons of noise no back yard with grass no land to roam and explore let alone the fact it's to dangerous to even walk outside. I wish all the time it was still that way... To be aloud to go out side and see huge grassy plains and lots of trees I would go out side every day but if I where to do that in my current situation I would be kidnapped and rapped.

I do empathise with what you are saying Ethan- are you sure you'd be kidnapped or raped??? If you have some friends in the neighbourhood, maybe you could stick together and still find a bit of nature somewhere...unless you live in a big city without any parks nearby. Any gardening community projects going around? How about starting something like that? Clearing some mess and planting a few things that you could start looking after???? Do never give up! :o) Whatever you start taking care of will start taking care of you, too....

it's been 2 years since the last time I had a smartphone, it fell off the stairs and the screen was crushed which was no longer functioning, I took that as an opportunity to disconnect from the life of a lifeless to concentrate more on my study and have more time to be creative and enjoy living, I've never been this comfortable and organized with my life, once you disconnect yourself from the virtual life and look how people use smartphones during the day you will be stunned by how far it has gone, more like watching slaves on an unknown path. I turned 18 this week and i didn't use a smartphone since i was 16, which doesn't make me a cool kid as well, i've been criticized a lot by my friends and school mates, but that makes me even more confident. Technology is amazing, but don't let it take over your life! :)

Good on ya. I too lived without a smart phone for a year and at first I did feel self conscious about it because I knew I was judged for having such a phone. But months on I got use to it and never felt so free. Catching the bus and just taking in the scenery around me and just living in the moment. That year really changed my life, and made me realize how much we miss when we are glued onto our phones. I have a smartphone now but I'm not addicted to it and only go on it when I need to. I agree with most of her points (increase in creativity due lack of toys etc.) but to complete ignore the fact that smartphones and, on a bigger scale, the internet, can educate and help so much, seems foolish. Any kids can learn how to do anything through RU-vid, wiki how; can educate themselves by looking up facts, and open their minds. They can actively open their mind, look for information and then form their own opinion. They are not limited anymore, which I think is a wonderful thing. All knowledge of this world is in your phone. So you should start to lean how to use your privilege and not completely abandon it.
@lewistherin4096
@lewistherin4096 6 лет назад
Do you still think this is true? I think lazyness and distraction kills creativity, therefore a smart phone can give you all the knowledge you seek, but you won't search for it since you can just distract yourself. There are so many things one can learn, but will you, or will the average/ordinary kid?

I can identify with her. Even though I had quite a few toys when I was young, I constantly modified them. I was never content with things that came from a store, and I spent more time modifying my possessions that using them for what they were meant for. This continued into adulthood, and became very useful for me. By that time, I was an artist, writer, and musician. I wanted Japanese drums (called okedo-daiko) for a musical band, but they were unavailable to me in California. So I researched them and built them myself. I late recreated a webpage with instructions for building the drums, and I received orders to build them for others including a stage show in eastern Canada. I later built most of my drums (African, Brazilian, Latin, Amerind) and I would walk through every aisle of Home Depot imaging how I could use the tools and materials meant for other functions in my drum-making. I 100% support what Ms. Makosinski is recommending.

Very careful, I agree they can be helpful, but I have very successfully navigated my life around not using one. I get headaches, nauseous, just an overall tired/ill feeling when I used my apple 6S, I upgraded and it didn't help. All cell phones emit some low level radio/micro waves. There are now many studies ie. the Reflex study, can google search it. Which have found low level EMF's from cell phones on many study participants damages single and double stranded DNA (a finding from the Reflex study). Low level EMFs is not as serious as xrays for example but studies are finding they are having negative impacts on our genes/DNA. Health is a blessing, I encourage people to take care of it.

She's so cool! A great talk! Creativity comes from the limitations our brain has to fight with. Like when you're bored in class, a simple pen and a piece of paper become sooo entertaining. Magic huh. Gotta remember that when I start feeling like I need this great expensive tool to get better at something or to start doing something. (a new camera to start studying photography, for instance) That expensive set of clothing to feel good and look stylish. Something I pretty often fall into. Other people just do all the creative work for us, and we simply pay money. No joy of creating. Recently I've been wanting to change things up in my room. But it costs so much - and will I be happy after investing a fortune in it? And I found great inspiration in people who buy furniture on craigslist for a few bucks and refurbish it. Gives stuff a personal touch, sparks creativity - and lets you save so much (furniture costs a lot!). Already did my table - got it for free, sanded and repainted in white and it's the cutest table ever now! Also minimalism is the way to go. Currently working on giving away and selling stuff I don't wear or use. Wow that's an essay right here haha.

I think she has a Personal Computer with access to WiFi ... The actual world can't work without Internet. If you think that Smartphones kill your creavity or your time , just use it for really important things, like make call phones, study, listen music... And forget Games, facebook, Instagram... but sometimes, it will be necessary for work or study...
