dude i went to that car show that happened on the 10th of October and got to see this awesome car in person! its still one of my favorite cars ever and the fact that everything about the car looks pristine give me mad respect for you man! i drove a silver R32 GTST over there and my uncle drove his blue 280z Datsun. one of my favorite car shows ever especially since there was and AE86 coupe even though it was run down quite a bit sadly. hope to see this car sometime in the future man
5K Video ?? My man was killing it in 4K and now he's uploading in 5k not sure about the diff though but juss shows the commitment to Quality. Unmatched. Surreal. Satisfying.
@@torrdavis6215 He's not on a ventilator anymore.. He is actually doing well according to his IG.. looks like what happened is he caught pneumonia after catching covid which is horrible.. This is how my uncle passed at 38.. He had the flu, had really bad chest cold, then caught pneumonia and passed from it. He went into the hospital too late.. Tragedy.
I've had a '93 RX7 for 25 years. I've put 180,000 miles on it (2nd engine). It's a pleasure and has been more dependable than most people are lead to believe. It isn't perfect... we need a word better than perfect. Like Matt Farrah once said, "pretty beats everything".
Lol I also roll the window down to close the door. I can see how no power steering on a street car can be un enjoyable for most cars. My old clutch was an unsprung clutch and it got old quick. I changed it out for a ACT 6 puck sprung with feed slave cylinder and now it is very enjoyable to drive. The feed slave cylinder is worth every penny. Brap on and I cant wait to see more of the car
Rob Dahmn did a series on how to make the Rotary more reliable. Perhaps make a series on making your RX7 more reliable and perhaps a bit more efficient so you can enjoy it more. Angel Motorsports is another good channel for rotary knowledge
I've had an FD for 10 years. I kept it mostly stock so it was fairly reliable until a water seal let go. But the oil usage was never bad, I'd do an oil change before I had to worry about it getting too low. I had full power steering and aircon so never had any comfort issues and it had the quiet stock exhaust (too quiet). I am rebuilding it now and as tempting as a single turbo is, I think I'll go for keeping it stock twins (high flowed) and just a bump in power to 300hp or so. I really miss driving it and this video reminds me why I love it. Beautiful shape etc.. The interior plastics did always annoy me and the aftermarket has improved interior panels / handles etc.. So all these things can be resolved. I really want a set of Advans however for mine.
If you need video ideas, a 15-20 minute video of Ben driving around recorded just like 6:41-8:45 would be absolutely glorious. No music or commentary needed. After he fixes that diff, of course.
BTW Advanced Auto also sells spill cleanup accessories 😂. Also, thanks for the sacrifice of the differential for our/your entertainment. As always, great video and content!
Can never go wrong with more rotary content :). Consider getting a "sohn" adapter (OMP adapter) for the car. I made my own but I believe rotary aviation and a couple other places sell them. This way you just have a tank full of two stroke oil and it stops pulling from the crankcase. You can even put a level sensor in it so that you don't have to pop the hood every time. I personally do not premix on top of this for a couple reasons, but you still could if you want to. Looking forward to seeing some more of the RX7! Edit: /wisper oh yeah, and having no power steering in these cars really ain't so bad :). They're nice and light, although of course big sticky tires will counteract that. Just consider it part of your exercise routine.
Yeah, the FD RX7's are very much a car that you avoid driving in any situation where it wouldn't be fun enough to enjoy, they're basically a street-legal racecar that you CAN daily IF you have to, but especially given how they literally never stay anything resembling stock, driving it for a commute is an exercise in frustration. The FB's and the low-boost or naturally-aspirated FC's are pretty alright tho, low or no boost means you can lean the mix out a bit more without worrying so much about cooking your engine, so it doesn't guzzle gas like it's water. I've got a friend who's been dailying an FB GSL for like 5 years at this point, he premixes and cleans the carb every once in a while but it kinda just... runs.
My second car years ago was a 74 coupe rx4, had a capella, series 2 rx7 and a series 5.. My dream is to own a FD one day, these things are crazy expensive.
That road you were driving on is one of my favorite in Virginia. Not sure it’s exact name but it connects VMI to Lynchburg, if I’m thinking of the right one. A ton of awesome corners and a sweet view.
HUGE IDEA Right Here. RX7 Content or not, just guarantee that you do one of these episodes every 3 months, preferably at the prime of each season, minimum 4 times a year for that sweet sweet RX7 ASMR content, thanks Ben and team you guys are the pinnacle of car content
This car seems to have a similar driving experience to my 944T except for the shortshifting, my car shakes and rattles like a nasa space shuttle when I do that.
My rotisserie built 95 mustang has a 427ci engine and a 22. 5 gallon tank. I get about 250 miles to a tank if I'm lucky... 😔i can't imagine the provisions needed for the 787b
Absolutely loved this video, just made me want to sell my kidney for an fd rx7 mire than i already want to. Cant wait to see more rx7 rotary content, also my thoughts and prayers for other Ben hope he's doing well
4:21 Bruh, I think if you don't know what gallons are then you also don't know what ci are. For those who don't know how much 20 gallons are, it's 74 liters
Your sentiment at the end about fixing things wrong with it is how I've felt about bikes I still own but don't ride hardly at all, and my end of year goal after I finish this last build of the year is to fix all those small little annoying issues that make me not want to ride certain bikes. I ride my XS650 almost every day, but everything else just sits. Guess that's the problem with owning a bunch of vehicles; there's a never ending to-do list, and if you start tackling the issues, being in the garage working on the same old bikes can feel like purgatory lol.
I feel you 100% I keep getting to the final details and getting bored and moving onto something else. Now I have a mess of bikes that ride/run but all just need annoying little stuff taken care of to be good
i had the same problem once, There was a point where i had nearly 20. at least 10 of them were sitting ducks just hanging around waiting to get fixed. So i fixed them one by one, Fixed one to sell it and moved on to the next one. After a while i was left with only 2. one of those is my daily driver now, The other one is for Sunday rides and generally mainly for me to hobby on and sometimes for a meeting here and there. But that's probably how i like to keep it, Just 2. 1 for transport and the other for the hobby
4:14 Converting gallons to cubic inches as if it makes the math easier for me, is the most cleaver way to make fun of my European ass. I have to give Ben a credit for that one 😂
@@timothyquinton2292 at the end of the day he made a joke on the imperial system, no one there knows what cubic inches are even tho it's their own system
When you said you're going to fix the things you dislike about your FD, I had a brief moment of panic followed by visions of pushrods and bald eagles flying through the air. But then you fixed the diff like a boss, and all was right in the world again because your FD was back in its natural state...broken ;)
I've driven an LS1-swapped FD, it had great power and balance and the instant torque was nice. The owner said it was expensive to swap, and also I hear his LS1 engine died from oil-related problems years later so remember piston engines aren't invincible either.
6:36 Honestly, I love this car. It sounds so good listening to it. Wish I could drive it myself. It's probably the best part about your rotary RX-7 videos, just you driving it with just the sound, no music or voice over, just a turbo, exhaust, and road noise.
Dear K- Ben. Your content is better than the juiciest, most expensive steak in the world. So get better and get back in the game. Your team needs you, and I need you. Love you brother.
With all the “challenges” of ownership,… 6:42-8:50… those two minutes make it all worth it. That was almost therapeutic. Thanks for all you do and all the content you produce.
Thank you for showing us what it is like to actually live with a classic car. A lot of the times the internet hypes up these cars and they definitely are very special cars but rarely do people actually talk about what it is like to live with and all the expenses and impracticality that comes with it.
This car needs "treatment" because its previous owner was a dudebro who thought removing the power steering would make give the car more soul or something. RX7 is a hard car to maintain and drive, but not no power steering kind of hard.
@@huleyn135 i understand what your saying but many cars without power steering are still easy to steer. Im guessing it was designed to have power steering and thats why its so heavy. My car has electronic power steering which personally i would get rid of it but for a daily driver it just wouldnt make sence.
@@JonHop1 Yeah this has its specific need because it is rotary. But other classics have there own things as well. I really like the E46 M3 and there is a really specific set of maintenance things you have to do if you want it to work well. And it is probably true of most classic cars.
@@huleyn135 All old cars are gonna come with baggage from the previous owners. Unless maybe if you buy a low mile collector grade super expensive one. Lol
Drive it. Break it. Fix it. Repeat. FD ownership in a nutshell. You basically summarised what it's like to own one of these things with the last minute of the video 😅 BURNOUUTTTT!!!! "Where's the trailer?"
You need a differential brace to be doing that. Stock FD diff and trans are really only good below for under 400 hp. Might as well get a transmission brace while you’re at it. Also if you drop your diff to fix it, relocate the fuel filter- the stock position is really hard to access, it is above the diff
You guys should do a crossover episode with Rob Dahm after he’s done with SEMA and Ben is healthy. I mean you guys are all Valvoline boys and I can only imagine the shenanigans that would ensue.
Yeah that was brilliant, so I pause the video and google '20 gallons to liters', the answer is 75.7082 liters, which is even larger than my 2003 Camry (70 liters), impressive
Can I say that I’m really happy to see a car RU-vid channel that doesn’t cut the yellow line when driving mountain roads? Cause I’m honestly pretty happy you’re showing good driving discipline.
I have been Daily driving and road tripping my FD for 3 years. Done just regular maintenance here and there, accidently skipped a couple oil changes here and there. Never had a problem, even in really bad LA traffic everyday or on 2000mi road trips. I also don't baby the car. I beat the actual shit outta the FD but she loves the punishment. 92k miles. Only actual engine work I've done was tear the motor apart and replace the coolant seals. Cleaned everything else off and put it back together, even with the OEM Apex seals. That was about 10k miles ago and I still have 110psi on both rotors. Rotaries are definitely not as fragile as people are led on to believe.
20litres/100km?!? You either floor it constantly or poorly maintain the engine. In my country I know 2 rx7 with less than 12l/100km on highway and the owners aren't top experts. Hope you've fixed it already.
