I agree with all the comments here. When I was a jump rope newbie, I recognized that I would not need to learn tricks for my goals (weight loss/fat loss). I just learned what I wanted to learn and stuck with that
I completely agree and have been jumping for years, BUT I love all forms of exercise, lifting, running, biking, swimming. I am a proud and very fit generalist at 72!!
Preach it, brother! I am in it for the exercise, learning the overly fancy stuff seems like a waste of time. It looks cool, but my efforts are better used elsewhere.
Absolutely True. I am 62 years old and started jump rope during COVID 19 in India. Till now I have made it a point to do jump rope every day. I feel relaxed and mentally strong and a jump rope session. Thanks 🎉.
Congrats. You are much better than me. Im 29 haha. I jump in alternate days and even so i feel so tired. This simples exercise consumes all of my energy. Thats why it is boxer's main exercise.
I agree with you 100% Dan. I've been jumping for nearly 3 years now and I love all the basic jumps. I sit in an office all day, so when I get home, I love listening to music and doing my jump rope. Its my time, no phone, no distractions for 30mins - 1 hour. Jump rope makes me happy.
I agree with you 100%. You do enough "tricks". I jump rope for fitness and health and in your words: total body transformation, not for show. I'm 68 and try to jump 3-4 times a week, either with your posted videos or with the Jump Rope and Dumbbell Workout Program. On alternate days, I use resistance loop bands.
Ya man! I am just a dude jumping rope to get my cardio up and sometimes it is as simple as getting me out! I am definitely not trying to be an acrobat with tricks. Good on ya, mate.
I’m 62 and jump rope religiously 5 mornings per week for years. I rarely do tricks, too. Boxer, alternate foot, ski, a few others. For me it’s about cardio and strength training. It’s all good, though. Whatever will keep you jumping!
I agree with your philosphy re jumping. I think the boxer moves and variations are enough for most people for fitness and the mental challenge. Maybe add the heel-toe move. I think you can move to the next level by making combos with your existing reptoire. You've done some with with Rush but not so much technique; that would be interesting. Definately Tori Boggs for combos.
You don’t have to explain yourself. Your niche is to the general public and is relatable and obtainable. General fitness and preparedness is where it is at for 99% of the population. Very few have the time and energy to practice those skill sets. Don’t get me wrong they are super cool. But your educational material is achievable and your story is one that is attainable for most humans. Keep doing what you are doing!
Yep, this video matches my mentality. I really only do boxer step. I would like to learn southpaws and crossovers but the time spent doing that takes away from exercising and losing weight so it's not a focus.
Way i see it, focus is fitness, and you lead by example, you have the shredded body most other jump rope youtubers dont. Another example is the Crossrope ceo, (who appeared in JRD bfore), also not big on tricks but a beast at double/quadruple unders. Different strokes different folks
Totally agree. I don't do mics, triples, mambas, etc. Fitness and weight loss is my thing. Tricks are for show. I wouod recommend squat jumps as a form of fitness and strength training routine.
I don't jump rope. The only trick I know of, by name, is double skip (or hop?) I just watch Dan because his videos encourage me to be me and focus on what I want out of my fitness journey.
I have been dancing with a rope for 14 years and i know at least a dozen tricks so far. Its called practice and consistency regardless of how difficult the trick is some tricks took me at least a month to get right. It all depends on how bad you want it but to me jump rope is all about endurance, timing, footwork, coordination, rhythm and so on tricks are just a bonus. And most people out there who do fancy tricks just love to show off i highly doubt any of them can dance with a rope for a hour or longer which is jump ropes true strength. - That is just my two cents on this subject
Yes it’s true. We do this only for burning fat and keep us healthy and fit. In a short time we burn lots of calories. It’s useful not only for our physical health but also mental health. When I am down and depressed I take a jump rope and dot 10 sets .
Like many people in the comments, I’m here for the simple fitness and encouragement! I like your straightforward approach and the mix of tricks u do; I think our community here is not into doing a million fancy tricks: we just want to Do The Thing!
Nope, no need for tricks here. Your answer was perfect- correct form and intensity for weight loss and endurance. I actually feel you lose both those elements when you're constantly working on tricks. I'd rather jump rope objectively everyday for the purposes of fitness and that can be achieved with the basics. Personally, I'd like to progress to skipping longer periods and introducing more high intensity intervals, including weighted jumps. Love this channel!!!
Please don’t do anything you aren’t inspired to do just because of comments. I have to wonder how many of those comment writers can do advanced tricks. I used to love learning new tricks and have to say I was getting good at them. But after I learned something new, then what? I just want a fun cardio workout. Good ol’ beginner moves do that just fine.
I have a request. I'm planning on getting the get strong set for my birthday at the end of July. Can you make more videos utilizing the get strong set so I have workouts to do with them? Or maybe make a Playlist of already existing get strong set? Tricks are cool but definitely not required. What youre doing is perfect.
When the gyms closed, I still had running and jump rope and kettlebells. Took my workout to my back yard and alley for sprints. Only ever cared about the basic bounce, my best achievement was eliminating the "double bounce" After that, I so no reason to do more. Mission accomplished. LOL.
I have no interest in advanced tricks like wraps, mike releases and flips/tumbles etc. I do strive for the intermediate level stuff. Crosses, EB, side-swings and footwork. I think more combos within workouts would be good. Tori Boggs would be a great person for you to collaborate with in my opinion. She has a combo with x-jacks, high-knee offstep and running man that I've been struggling with. A southpaw combo with various crosses and side-swings would be cool. Something normal people could really develop a flow with...
Which calculator do you use for your BMR? And I know you mention in many of your videos about a calorie defect. Is there a certain percentage you should aim to be under? I’m asking under the assumption that cutting them in half isn’t really a healthy thing to do? That’s me guessing, and was hoping you could elaborate more on this topic! Love the videos thanks for all you do.
1st not many people have the coordination to even do the basic stuff in skipping. 2nd people wil just give up after a while. 3rd you need specific ropes for certain tricks. 4th people wont buy extra ropes just to do tricks. 5th people that are started skipping doing it to lose weight. 6th see 2nd.
You are a big guy, all tricks that Lauren and her ilk are doing are very hard on joints. I am a male, 45-50 pounds lighter than you and have been a runner for years and yet some of the shuffle dance moves she does really make my body hurt afterwards. But it's def fun and forces your brain to work harder to coordinate all body movements that go into one cool looking trick. I think you already can do all of the stuff that really counts and makes you a proficient jump skipper. Leave the weird injury-causing moves to people half your size. 😀
Boxer Step, High Knees, Cross Over, Side Swings and Double Unders - that's all we need. Whole rest is not beneficial, better stick to the" golden five" and go to heavier ropes.
Ciao. Ciao Eva
Question for you. Should I start with the 1/4 or 1/2 lb rope. I am new to jump rope and am going to order a Crossrope. Also. Slim or the heavy handle. I am just doing this for exercise. Thanks
My trick is getting my 4,000 jumps in 6 days a week! And since I’ve been jumping my hair grows like crazy! And that’s all I need!! Bump those tricks!! LOL!
a lot of tricks are not easy on the joints hey man can you pls get in contact with crossrope? no sign of CS, no sight of the tracking code, I don't know what's happening. They're not replying to my messages either.
Given what you already do, I'd say throw in the EB. It's just a crossover with a little extra spice. No need to go all Tori Boggs with this stuff though.
The jump rope dudes branded mat is sold out currently :( you can get the crossrope jump rope mat: www.crossrope.com/jrd-crmat and still use our code DOTHETHING for a discount.
Day 22 of offering Dan to do the fastest time to do 2000 jump ropes challenge Edit: Seeing you do triple/ quadruple unders would be extremely cool, in my opinion.
You don't need to do tricks. It's the same for me with any sport. If I swim I just want to swim faster. If I Jump rope I just want to do it more efficiently
Not gonna lie, i know some basic tricks and do them. Ive tried some of the more sophisticated ones and keep failing. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I dont do more tricks. Keep it real, if you knew how to do more sophisticated tricks amd your body can execute them, youd be showing them off all the time. I know I would. No shame in that.
i do some tricks, but the main reason i followed the JRD guys is i got inspired by their passion and commitment, which is believe is very important, not just with jump rope, but with the whole fitness lifestyle. enter hashtag DOTHETHING!!! =D
Dan your the man. I’m like you. I jump rope for my fitness and lifestyle. In March I will hit my 55th birthday 🎉 and there is no way I would be so active without jumping rope. If you want to learn new tricks, there is only one person you need to collaborate with. @kathyjumps one of the OG’s of the jump rope legacy. #dothething
