I definitely find it faster to use my projector, even with the fiddling around. I printed PJ pants that were 30 paper pages which took an hour for my printer to print, just to start. I think in the Projector group they say that the writing isn't going to be legible on most projectors, I need to start doing an edit and mark the pieces somehow so I know which pieces I need instead of going back to check that I have the right one half a dozen times.

1. I have bins that I organize my cut out pieces in. Separate them with paper with the name of pattern and size. 2. In six months you'll be so fast you won't know how you did it without one before. 3. You can create your own projector files and sometimes when you contact your pattern company they will just do it for you. 4. Preferences and choose a different background colour and you can choose a different colour for the words. 5. I save so much fabric by doing it with my projector. You will find in time all of these things will sort themselves out. I could never go back to paper!

These arw valid points. I'm happy I heard this. I also really consider this when buying one. Just one question if you are using your cutting table for work and also sewing, do I need to recalibrate each time the cutting board moves?

I have a projector, really enjoy it, but…I project onto paper first. Still beats the heck out of printing taping and tracing. Grading sizes is a must for me and paper makes that easier.

Yes, the grading game definitely adds an extra level of play to using a projector. My #1 reason was to be closer to paper-free. It felt SO good to get all those paper patterns out of my house!

I have gotten into the habit of stitching just the layer(s) I need then bring it into inkscape, make the document layout the size of the fabric I have, then play pattern piece Tetris on there and save that file for projecting! This is my favourite part of using projector vs paper!

@@seasonallyproductive yes! I personally also don't find projector any quicker but I find it more fun to play on the computer rather than taping on my hands and knees. Plus Yay for no more paper clutter

Definitely downloading that pdf stitcher program!! I absolutely HATE printing off patterns online. Too many pages and I can’t just be buying ink all the time lol. But i would totally just print a whole pattern at staples or whatever. Idk if my room is clean enough for a projecter lol plus I prefer paper patterns myself though I should consider putting them on the brown paper like professional designers

I Love my projector and have the same Apeman as you but with a smaller distance between my table and the lens so have to move my pattern and fabric quite a bit. I started using Inkscape and have now moved to Affinity Designer and can set my area to be the size of my fabric and can then play pattern tetris with the pieces before I start to cut out. Yes, it is a learning curve and yes, it does take possibly a bit more time but I will now always choose a projector pattern over a paper pattern and I use PDF Stitcher if there is only an AO file option and add extra allowances around the pattern to make it easier to move around. Great video and good points to mention for anyone looking to move to projector - it will never be for everyone but for me, I'm very happy with mine and yes, my image is blurry too so I think it is an issue with the projector. Thank you for posting

Look at Inkscape (free) to do Pattern Tetris to lay out the pattern pieces on the fabric. You can unfold the pattern pieces so you can cut it all out with a single layer, then lay out all the pieces and rearrange them to get the best most efficient cutting layout. Once you learn how, it’s pretty quick. I use Affinity Design to do the same thing.

I've been looking at projectors, but how the heck would I transfer my pattern alterations?? I don't have a single adult pattern that didn't need adjustments, I'm much taller than patterns are drafted for.

There is a program that others use, but I have yet to try it. I plan to share once I'm comfortable with it!

You can always trace from the projector to Swedish tracing paper or whatever and than make all your alterations on that.

There's parts I don't like about it, but they don't outweigh the positives, so overall, I love having it.

I bought a projector but found I did not have the ceiling height to get a while pattern piece projected on my cutting table. Bought a Silhouette Cameo Pro digital cutter and have not looked back. It has a 24" square cutting mat. I use the software to fit the pattern pieces to the mat. It is easy to tile the patterns and create cut and join lines. I also add seam lines by using the internal offset function in the software. I add full grain lines and get the cutter to draw them, plus all the pattern markings, such as darts. For bodice pieces, skirts, trouser patterns I use a second sheet of paper. If you buy the rotary blade you can get the machine to cut full pattern pieces directly from the fabric. Even if you only have a small Silhouette Cameo 4 machine you can use the optional 12" x 24" may to cut paper pieces larger than A3 , so 4 pieces of paper instead of 2. Much easier if you need to make pattern alterations or layout all your pattern pieces on the fabric. In theory you could line up all the pieces in software, draw them all out with grain lines aligned and then place the complete cutting layout on the fabric, to be cut manually. I sometimes use Pattern Master Boutique from WildGinger.com to create my patterns and they have a great built in yardage calculator.

I absolutely love that you didn't just "give up" on digital pattern options!! I've thought about using my Cricut Maker for such things, but I just love not having to use paper!
