In this video, I’m going to share with you exactly why I don’t recommend Quickbooks Self-Employed. Quickbooks Self-Employed seems like the perfect choice for small business owners in need of a bookkeeping and accounting solution, but it has a few drawbacks. Watch the full video to learn what those are and the ways around those obstacles.

I've used TurboTax for years, gathering all the info myself and then feeding it into the program. Works well for me. This year I thought I upgrade, so I got QBSE and figured it would do all the work for me. WRONG. A nightmare. I spent more time, and way too much interaction with barely competent "customer service" types whose accents were thicker than thick trying to get QBSE to download properly into TurboTax than I ever spent doing all that data collection myself. Not a fan.

I fully understand your plight and have just gone through the same issue... It is infuriating that TurboTax is not paired with all the QuickBooks systems!! Let's face it - besides keeping things organized for good business oversight - we do this so that our financial exposure and accountability to the IRS is seamless! So @JamieTrull I have been using QBO for several years and have used an accountant for the tax work - but he is retiring and I have wanted to file my self...

I switched from Go Daddy Bookkeeping to Quickbooks Online and it is very complicated especially when trying to import ebay and etsy charges and use it for schedule c tax forms. I was told by QB consultant to formulate my chart of accounts according to schedule C but when I do auto imports of my ebay and etsy charges, the way they are set up is so convoluted that I can't easily put them in the schedule c categories. I understand that double entry bookkeeping is more accurate but I'm a very small proprietorship, don't make much sales so I don't know if it's worth the hassle and paying someone to help me figure it out is also very expensive. I'll be sticking to spreadsheets for now.

For example I need to give the government's Health Insurance an update on my income for 2022, this is the first year I am totally as self employed. My question is: the total amount of my income report should be before or after taxes? @@JamieTrull I just think that QuickBooks has numerous shortcomings for CPA / Bookkeepers who want to run an efficient Write-up business. For example, it does not integrate with a Fixed Asset program that automatically posts depreciation expense. It does not integrate with an Amortization Program that automatically posts Interest Income / Expense. It does not have real journal entries in the format of XX-100 and there are no standard or reversing entries. Unless they have fixed this problem, the Bank Reconciliation program does not reconcile the Bank Statement to the General Ledger, it reconciles the Bank Statement to the Bank Statement. It does not completely integrate with the client's accounting system. For example, after the CPA / Bookkeeper posts adjustments to their client's books, there is no guarantee that the client can't change these entries. Finally, there is no integrated checklist for the bookkeepers to follow step by step procedures established by their supervisor.

Do you still have a link for QBO I wonder which one you think I should consider being scorp. I am changing accountants and my current accountant has me riding off his QBO and just share in monthly cost but the other accountants say I need my own and to invite them to access
@JamieTrull
@JamieTrull Год назад
I usually recommend people have their own - that way you have no issues with transitions, etc. That said, my QBO link unfortunately only works for new clients, so you'd have to start a whole new company file to use it. Your old accountant should be able to transfer it to you for billing, but unfortunately, any preferred pricing they have will roll off and you'll be at retail price.

@JamieTrull
@JamieTrull Год назад
Hey there! Yep, all QBO levels track mileage. As far as personal expenses, I would recommend fully separating business and personal before instituting QBO, and then only linking your business account with QBO. That's also best practice and required if you are an LLC to make sure you keep your legal protections. The process won't be seamless though since QBO is on a different platform than QBSE. It may make sense to start a new year in QBO, and spend the time over the next few months getting everything separated out so you don't have to worry about you personal expenses. Hope that helps!

Does Quickbooks Online offer integration to Turbotax like Quickbooks self employed does?
@JamieTrull
@JamieTrull Год назад
Unfortunately not, but its pretty easy to enter in the info yourself from the reports that QBO provides. The reason is because QBO allows for customization of accounts, so your accounts may not directly map to turbotax in the same way self-employed does (since self-employed doesn't let you customize)
@javierv7tube
@javierv7tube Год назад
For a very small self-employed sole proprietor who only needs to track expenses for tax purposes, QB Self Employed seems adequate. I am such individual currently using QB Simple Start using your logic. After several years of using the true accounting version, I have found I never really needed a balance sheet, or unique customization, or the potential to grow bigger. I am switching to QB Self Employed, the glorified spread sheet.
@JamieTrull
@JamieTrull Год назад
I think the key is knowing whether you plan to grow or change entity types. Even a a self-employed sole prop, eventually it could make sense to become an S Corporation to save money on taxes, in which case you would need a balance sheet, customization, etc. However, if you know that isn't something you'll need any time soon, then go for it!
@4tun8nanette
@4tun8nanette Год назад
I am like Javier. It's just me, sole proprietor. I only need to track income and expenses. I will never grow, don't want to. I only got my DBA because the person I work for didn't want to 'hire' me as an employee. So I am getting the tax benefit for myself since I get no employee benefits. I know how to use Quicken but it's ridiculously expensive now. I'm really looking for a Quicken alternative that can give me expense category totals at the end of the year to make tax prep easier. I'd like to also have the ability to also have a 'cash' account to add those to the expense category totals.

I totally respect your opinion and you gave some compelling points. I actually like QBO Self-Employed for basic self-employed business, Sch C Businesses and Gig workers. I had a client who was Sole Proprietor, Sch C and he used his debit card at least 20 times a day and some of his purchases were personal and some for business. There would be 10 purchases for coffee per day. I like the feature where you can setup a bank rule and record these transactions automatically and correctly for business or personal and being able to figure out their quarterly estimated payments

So even for gig workers, I think its best for them to keep business and personal separate, though I know not all do this. However it is against banking regulations to be using a personal bank account for business transactions, and I know people who have actually had their accounts frozen by the bank for doing this. I'm in the "better to be safe than sorry" camp! Also....that's a lot of coffee...I'd be bouncing off the walls haha!

@kismet9673
@kismet9673 Год назад
I agree, @rcippa2588. I guess you could call me a "gig" worker just because I lack some traditional business structures such a separate business account but I find QBSE acceptable for what I need which is mainly to separate expenses, track mileage and do a little invoicing (for a different business) for my Accountant. I definitely think you need to be way more into accounting then I would probably ever want to be to understand even half of the reasons QBO would be better. Personally I hate that everything including graphic design programs are all cloud-based now and you don't have a choice in that. Back in the day I used to have plain old Quickbooks software on my computer - it was too complicated for what I actually needed in my past business where I incidentally didn't need any milage tracking but I learned a little more about bookkeeping every year and got better at it. I felt totally trapped and resentful having to choose between the the different current versions when I had to switch to online-only because I was well aware of how limited QBSE was but when I lost my entire business overnight during the shut-down in the first months of the pandemic and started my whole life over not even sure the new business would be sustainable I seriously could barely even afford QBSE and the milage tracking was important in my new business model so without any promo discounts it wasn't even a question. I know it will be hard to switch this business over to another version but I am now on the verge of filing for disability/retirement anyway so it's not strong enough of an incentive to switch now as if I would be expanding or dramatically changing my business again anytime soon.

It depends on you! If you can manage all the accounts in QB and are ok with manually moving balances around just on paper, that can be an option. I've found most business owners like to use bank balance accounting though where they can log in at any time and instantly see what their available cash balance to spend is. Relay also allows you to set up an actual savings account and make some interest for longer-term business savings. Personally, I prefer to track my balances in Relay and feel it allows for more automations and ease. Plus, it's free (and you get $50 after depositing your first $100 if you use my link to sign up! jamietrull.com/relay )

I've never used it but will put it on my list! One key question is whether you can generate a Balance Sheet from it. If not, it isn't using true double-entry accounting.

This information was helpful since I have to convert from the Desktop version and decide on which online version to use for my small business.

@@JamieTrull thank you! After getting a new Mac, I'm also switching from an old desktop Quickbooks version to something new. One of the things I really wanted was to be able to customize my income and expense accounts - it helps me get a better idea of what's working or not. And now I know self-employed is not for me! And thanks for providing those great quickbooks deals through your website! I appreciate it!

Converting from Desktop to online will create problems. I would do the trial version to see if u like it. Reports that u r used to will be gone. With conversion…everything will be thrown in the wrong accounts and 7yrs of what I reconciled was a mess. Desktop version was okay so I continued to use it and spent hours fixing part of the online version and then I stopped. If u have to use online I would just starting at the new year just journal entry info re-enter vendors cust info and open items and pull-up desktop to refer to previous transactions. I have decided to continue to use desktop but payroll feature /support / sync bank stops May 31st. I’m probably going to put on a desktop that I will never connect to internet…if it lets me. Please don’t blame your employees for everything being a mess it isn’t their fault and they might not be able to fix it. Good luck.
