I've been gaming since gaming started. I'm 64 now and find that MMO's and, for that matter, any head to head PVP type games have become a chore. I much prefer story based games and have rediscovered the joy of crpg's in particular. The last MMO I played was ESO. Give them credit for keeping to and explaining much lore but eventually I found myself musing over the fact that I was playing them for all sorts of reasons except gameplay. Now I very seldom bother to sign in

100% - I feel like a lot of companies now lean on PVP to be engaging enough on its own and skip right over creating good narrative content for their game.

I played WOW from ‘07 until ‘12 for 3-6 hours a day regularly. One day I realized that nothing I did mattered and I lost interest in the repetition. Now if I’m gonna spend more than 20 hours in a game, I want that story to revolve around me and the choices I make. Also I shutter now at anything that promotes online multiplayer. WOW ruined my desire to play anything other than single-player games.

I reject MMOs because: (1) Despite all promise on their mom's graves - they end up monetizing it. (2) There is no ENDGAME and it relies on 'cognative traps', were farming is the goal. (3) They penalize/punish you for taking time out.

Honestly, I got sick of MMOs, not because they're bad or anything, but after 20 years of playing this kind of game, you can see that you change the names, but the essence is the same. They are designed to trap the player, like that old expression "the more the merrier". The point is, unless you're a millionaire heir and you don't have to worry about anything, the time you have is inversely proportional to the day-to-day responsibilities, so if you have other priorities it's kind of hard to spend time with MMO's, unless you make money from it. And about the story in these games, the ones that I liked the most were ESO and SWTOR.

In a similar respect, as an older gamer I've found that most 'open world' games appeal to me less and less. As time becomes more precious to me, I prefer a game with a solid story and an end that doesn't require a hundred hours of shallow depth/side quests to complete. (Obviously not all open world games fall into this category, but I'm finding that over the last decade, a great many do indeed)
@youngedge746

For me open world isnt the issue, but the formula is. They add tons of pointless side quest, repetitive mission, etc. And the world is empty, Thats why open world are dying. It makes exploring less enjoyable

I'm most likely older than you, and to me it was the same thing. Nowadays the only "competitive PvP multiplayer game" I still enjoy online is Chess. Of course Chess is a lot different from video-games, but it still has its unique points that keep me hooked. To name just two: - after each game you can analyze your play and learn something, - and you can also spend 10 minutes on the fly here and there just solving some tactic puzzles, which require much less time and effort than playing whole games but still give you a smidge of the same "figuring it out" kind of satisfaction, while also providing a bit of general training that keeps you less rusty for when you'll actually play full games. Thanks for your videos!

Hey, my main problem with MMOs is that other people are involved. Now, sometimes that is ok. Early on ESO had a good community, LOTRO's community was ok, I found WoW's to be childish, and EVE's to be outright predatory. After all of my experiences with MMOs I decided I was the common denominator, I don't really like interacting with other people, and stopped playing them.

Ive been playing CRPG's since i was a kid in the late 80's (SSI gold box, The Bards Tale, Eye of the Beholder, Ultima... all that stuff) and was a teenager when the late 90's renaissance came (Fallout, Baldurs Gate, Planescape Torment...all that stuff) and so to find a channel that focuses on CRPG's in a modern light is awesome... Ive watched all your reviews and its what actually made me go back and get the enhanced versions of all the infinity engine games and get back into those great games... Plus you highlight new/modern CRPG's that often dont get mainstream attention which is awesome - ive found several new great CRPG's from your vids (Encased being one atm im really liking for example)... So yeah im glad you are CRPG focused as there are plenty of MMO channels already to be honest - and while i know you would do exellent coverage of MMO's as someone who preferes single player (or at most co-op) i have little interest in most MMO's (although guilty pleasure i do play ESO and quite like it lol)... Rock on and keep up the good work and dont worry about not covering MMO's at all...

There are, to me, two parts of relevance in a CRPG: the mechanics and the story. So once I learn the mechanics, if the story is not that good, I get bored unless the mechanics manage to hold my attention. I eventually move on, anyway, of course.

Quitting competitive multiplayer games and switching back to single player games reignited my love for gaming, there is just so many experiences that gaming as a medium provides and its just a waste to spend all that time on few multiplayer games when you can experience so many different games from multiple genres with unique gameplay or storytelling, i still treasure my time and memories with games like Wow classic and TBC but i simply cant go back to spending thousands of hours on a single game like i used to when i was younger.

I appreciate this so much, for the past 2 years I've been phasing out of MMO's, and I've played everything on the market extensively except for maybe Endgame WoW. I loved hunting those achievements in GW2, but even that didn't sate the appetite for "system mastery" as you say. That really hits the nail on the head of my issue with MMO's, you can never really be "great" at anything because they'll change the system when people become too good or start to master it, I've seen it happen several times over. Single player games satisfy that more or online multiplayer stuff, plus you still get to be a completionist with that stuff

You’re spot on here in this video. A good friend of mine works for Bungie and he’s always trying to get me to buy destiny which I’ve tried but I can relate with all of your comments regarding playing destiny or any of the MMOs. Aside from that, working in human resources at the end of the day I really don’t wanna have to deal with more people and cooperate. I just want to have a cathartic experience or somewhat meditative experience by unwinding with a solo game.

That's basically the same for me as well, I rarely have the time to play a mmo due to work and social obligations and in most cases the story is mediocre or decent at best. I play games for the story now and I don't want to sink 200 hours to reach the so called end game that most MMOs have but I did enjoy my time with final fantasy 14 and swtor, in the case of ff14 the story is really good and you don't really have to interact with other players and swtor is a game I just hop into once a year to play the new story content. It's the closest thing we will get to a kotor sequel and I don't recall ever having to grind or interact with another player, so I highly recommend people who enjoyed the game to give it a try. You can just buy 1 month sub to get all the story expansions and you get to keep them even when your sub runs out. I would also highly recommend you play the jedi knight for the kotor experience and a imperial agent for a great story but avoid jedi counceller and republic trooper since they are the worst.

I enjoyed it a lot, because most of what you said applies to me as well Another thing for me, in particular when I got older, was that my playstyle turned them into single player games for most of the time with only occasional dungeons and raids. Also, I was never big fun of PVP, so I usually skipped on one part of the game completely anyway.

It really is a hamster wheel, that's how I've described MMOs for a long time too. That said, I'm playing ESO for the questing and it's a nice diversion but I have no intention of raiding or anything. I'll complete the zone quests and put it away for a while . Even so I'm being drawn away more and more back to single player CRPGs. I'm finally getting into Wasteland 3.

MMOs reward you for grinding. You can sink 24 hours of your day and you still feel like you missed out on something. That's a no-no. If I play Pathfinder and I dont havetime for 2-3 days then i pick it up later. In an MMO you miss out on daily login rewards daily quests points to run later content, the grind itself... Some even have month-long login events and you lose the"final reward" if you skip even a single day. Thats way too much for a game to demand of me. It's my hobby not my life.

I understand this. I put many hours into an MMO just to find out that my progress was being hindered by the instability of player groups, and MMOs you need groups to complete end game. I ended up getting my end game armor but it wasn't fun and turned out to be a very lonely experience.

Then I'll check out Divinity, Pathfinder, and PoE. Awesome channel.

I think one thing gamers discovered over the years is that multiplayer and especially MMOs are the prerogative of teen players and students - those with most free time. Some light, instantaneous multiplayers might be fine, like Fall Guys or CSGO, but as years go on the amount of those fitting for older players goes down. Because more and more games are bogged down in live service models, continuous events, patches, extra progressions and such, and more and more devs WANT and DEMAND your PERMANENT commitment. It becomes a chore, an obligation. And players on the adult side have more than enough of their own obligation to want these in gaming. I only allow myself to play 1 "live service" game at a time, and focus on single players instead, while people I know who are unemployed or more free often play a dozen of these battlepass multiplayers, like Siege, Fortnite, DbD etc. at the same time and end up mostly hating all of them.

I have the same problem with most MMOs (the hamster wheel progression), but two MMO's that don't have that issue as much that - Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (choices have consequences and great single player stories for each class). And of course Final Fantasy XIV - just a great story to play through, easy to go at your own pace and engage in the MMO part only when you want to.
@Glenningway
@Glenningway 2 года назад
XIV is great if you just play for the story and stay away from raiding. Even crafters and gatherers have cutscene quests. Only downside that gearing up is still a treadmill and gated by weekly lockouts. They are trying to revive PVP with their own battlepass that doesn't expire so you can "level" it up to get previous Feast rewards. I'm getting Endwalker to see how the current story ends, then I might end up retiring from MMOs completely. My only wish is that companies could just do ongoing content for single player off line games, like Fallout 4 (Creation Club and free mods), Xenoverse 2 and Dying Light, rather than do one or two DLC and wash their hands of it.

@KarlWinterling
@KarlWinterling 2 года назад
The maximum amount of time I can realistically spend on a single game before losing interest is probably around 200-300 hours. I heard an estimate for completing main story content (not counting side activities) in Star Wars: The Old Republic is something like 480 hours. Mechanics are usually a very simple system with tank/support/healer/DPS roles. I might be interested in an MMO if the mechanics were more similar to a combat-focused CRPG like Icewind Dale, Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2, or Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2. It feels like Icewind Dale got the formula right but MMOs took Neverwinter Nights as an inspiration and simplified its mechanics even more.

The mmo's I play are also a massive money sink, if you want to have fun... imho. I currently no longer have liquid income due to getting old, everything being so expensive and my life imploding into a pile of meh. I just get this feeling from a lot of the game developers/companies that they are just too afraid of negative social media and only care about your money. Creating games where you have to pay to play/win, having endgame just about buying stuff (often with real cash) for a character/house, the expensive RNG based collecting (often with real cash) and lastly the uber grinding which lasts forever... so your subscription is paid to them forever. Very few mmo games are created to be great, well thought out (storylines etc) and fun games anymore. Keep up the great posts Mortismal, as you are currently one of the only "real" and clear spoken game reviews left.

funny you make this video because I'm going thru that same process... I've taken a break from GW2, nothing against it actually, it's definitely one of the most friendly MMOs but just the daily drill got me tired... I've been playing C- and A-RPGs (fell in love with Grim Dawn) for a couple months now, offline, by myself, and it feels so refreshing. Even playing some pixel-art minor games on the side brings back childhood memories on my 8-bit Master System. The story aspect though is indeed a huge gap. GW story used to be engaging but now feels so hollowed out and sugar-coated, I just can't take it anymore... compare that to something like Planescape: Torment... yeah, no.

I started playing XIV back in 1.0 back in college. I played heavily for years, but have recently backed off significantly, not playing for months at a time. I'm going to use the multi-year arc finishing after this next expansion to finally fully quit. My problem with MMOs VS Singeplayer games is on same base as RU-vid videos VS Twitch streams. I can play SP/MP game of same genre. I can watch video/stream from same author, but somehow it is just not same. I play games for gameplay and make-believe experience, I really love feeling that I am somehow special or I just achieved something in makebelieve world or I can experience story which is just mine and created "just for me". I don't like when I need to share "my" story with houndreds and thousands other players and feeling that I am "just part of community". Same for videos/streams I don't like feeling that I am "just another viewer" I don't like when author of video reacting on someone other then me, or speaking with another viewer because it rob me from experience having all attention targeted to me and for me. I got social aspect of mmo games as well as social aspect of streams and I don't want to take it from anyone else. But I get feeling of "being social" and being "part of community" from other places (D&D, LARPs, Family), therefore I don't play MMOs. Soo, thank you for this video "created just for me" :D, it made me think and I am glad for that. :)

I've just made that decision right now. The state of MMOs now is not what it used to be when I started. They make everything take longer than it should to cash in, making everything boring in the process. Why go through all that when you can just buy an account from someone who has? I genually feel like if you're just starting in some mmo now a days it's a lot more efficient to just play your account up to the point where the grind starts, then buy an account from someone who has already done it and enjoy the famed "endgame" that way untill you're bored, then sell the account for the next person who'll enjoy it.

I started playing WoW in the middle of the pandemic. The lockdown was so harsh that I’m found myself craving for social interaction. I guess I’m not the only one who thought so, because in my server I found a lot of people like me who played casually just to get a bit of social interaction. It’s fun, goofing around in the city/dungeon, complaining about the pandemic/world in general. and then the pandemic kinda recede. Lockdown lifted, people going back to office. The casuals slowly going away, leaving behind hardcore and serious player. Playing become a burden to me. Those grinding doesn’t feel the same without people who also wants to enjoy some social interaction. The only players left in game only cares about pushing raid/keys. With the release of Pathfinder, I stop deluding myself and back away from WoW to play single player games again. Tried ESO and FFXIV too, feels the same. I feel that MMO’s gameplay will always be overshadowed by a good singleplayer game. It’s the social interaction that keeps us hooked. Once that gone, well.. time to cancel that sub I guess.

I started playing mmos back when Ultima Online was going strong. Left it when EQ came out and left that when Dark Age of Camelot came out. I've tried a few different ones since then and ESO held my attention longer than the rest have since DAoC. Most modern mmos focus on loot boxes and the communities of those games are toxic and full of imbeciles with a small number of good people. I still talk to some of the friends I made back in my days in EQ and DAoC. Nowadays they just don't appeal to me at all. I even tend to avoid multiplayer games. I prefer to get lost in an epic singleplayer RPG or something, like Pathfinder WoTR. I truly hope that developers continue to make quality isometric crpgs.

Today, I had decided to stop playing ESO for many reasons and my ESO plus membership is about to lapse so that will be the day I stop playing cold Turkey. The first reason is I spending up to 4 to 6 hours a day on ESO which having a detrimental impact in Real Life and Responsibilities. Next is unusual Maintenance times which forces me to adjust my routine or even miss out on daily activities in ESO which I find extremely inconvenient. Lastly is poor player etiquette where I find my virtual space getting violated when other players clip through me or worse, run over me while they're racing their mounts in towns or cities. I will return back to single player games when I can put them on the back burner if Real Life requires me to stay off my PlayStation for a few days or weeks.

I'm also an aging gamer and the old WoW style MMO's have lost their appeal for me. I have similar sentiments to those you expressed here. If they re-invent the wheel and create an MMO that's radically different than those that came before in a lot of different ways maybe I'll give them a shot.

Getting older I find MMOs just don't sustain my interest because of the sheer time you need to spend and trying to arrange playing with friends is damn near impossible, I have a family, a full time job where I regularly do overtime, recently bought a house that needs tons of work, I've played RuneScape since I was a kid and there's still a fair bit I enjoy about it but these days I might get about an hour a day spare, and if you know OSRS at all you'll know that's not enough to get anywhere lol

It doesn't matter if you unlock games, free dental, timeshare, marriage counselling and a cheap escrow. Business practice means they have to make it profitable for them in the end. The equation ends with a net positive to their side. I don't mind paying for what I want - but MMOs never deliver in the long run.

I used to like mmos when you have to go on an actual adventure just to find people to join your group because you couldn’t take on most things unless you had a group. Like FF11. Now they have AI party members and made things way easier but the thrill is gone now. The thrill of fighting a monster with a chance to loose everything and to loose a level gave you such a strong feeling. You were scared cautious and needed people to stay with you. Ransoms weren’t really a thing at least in your own group. Mmos were something special back then.

Only MMOs I ever enjoyed, the more traditional ones(Vindictus was the online game I sunk the most of my time into I think, apart from Warframe) are The Secret World and Guild Wars 2. Mostly because you can play in these mostly on your own and they have good(Secret World) or just a nice story(GW2). MMOs annoy me because even if I wanted to tackle a certain dungeon it usually means waiting a long time for any party to be gathered or not being able to experience that content at all. Hell till to this day I can't experience fighting the jungle dragon in GW2 because when I have time and it happens there are barely any people doing it or we fail at something.

I started playing WoW when I was introduced to it by IRL friends, and we played together. But as time went on, and we went our separate ways, it just stopped being the same, though I still played. Then Cata came out for WoW and the game become too simple, and too focussed on endgame content. I loved the PvE part of WoW, it was a challenge, and the character building was a strong aspect for me. That's all gone now, and now in middle age that which appealed to me in my late 20s/early 30s, bores me, even with WoW Classic. Plus I now take issue with paying a sub plus paying a high price for an xpac where I'll never see 90% of the content. I gave GW2 a go, and though I'm glad it has no sub, it too is endgame focussed and boring after a while, especially since you can defeat most enemies with the same combo. Even worse are when items and fear are locked behind PvP tiers, since I've never had an interest in PvP. I used to enjoy the social aspect of WoW as well, even the trolls in chat, when you could really chat to folk, even just stop somewhere and just chat for a while, perhaps whilst farming mats, something that's died in the modern era.

Too many players are toxic for my tastes. This coming from World of Warcraft primarily, but I found even when I transitioned over to FF14 this year, I still got some toxic behavior from people. I was still learning the game, and maybe I wasn't as good as I should have been, I was still a sprout after all. I fell of a ledge in one area because I assumed there would be an invisible wall like there is in nearly every other area of the game. I got shit for that. I just quit the game. Yeah I know I messed up, doesn't mean I want to be criticized by other players for it. Do they think I don't know that I messed up? If a game isn't enjoyable in that aspect, I'm just going to quit.

The bane of MMO and online games in general. Took ages for me to find good non toxic server and guild in WoW. Same with ESO and FFXIV. At least most MMO are locked behind subs so I found it not as toxic as free to play games like Valorant and the like. But well, now that countries start lifting lockdown, I see less and less people in game, leaving only the hardcore and toxic people in server. Time to cut the losses and go back to good ol’ singleplayer games

Don't give me an excuse to hate on MMO's xD I have never really enjoyed MMO's. I spent a little bit of time casually playing ESO but I think that was mainly because anything is fun with friends. So while I will proceed to trash MMO's I completely understand why people play them and accept they enjoy it. The main problem with them is the combat always sucks in my experience. You have what would seem like interesting abilities on paper but when actually used in game it's just push button to do X and the enemy just sits there do the same to you... There's no feedback or interesting decisions other than use abilities in the right order if necessary and manage your cooldowns. This is apparently the main draw to these games, simplicity, but to me that's just boring... and quite frankly everything else about an MMO is far from simple. Games are time sinks there is no disputing that, but MMO's are a waste of time for me, completion for completion's sake.

I don't like playing mmorpg in general, they aren't interactives enough for most of them, my opinion doesn't matters, i can't make any choices, i don't have the impressions that my character is part of the universe. It's just go from quest to quest endlessly, the boss you just kill will repop some times later so no matter whay, you have no impact. I like the Old Republic though, at least there, you can make decisions that, even if it's small, have a impact.
