I busted an IFR ride 50 years ago. The examiner was an FAA inspector (that was a possible "free" choice back then). Everything went well until until he put the covers over the gyros and started making rather brisk changes in requests ending in a no gyro vor approach. You said the magic word: task saturation. I went into meltdown and got a pink slip. Got a bit of extra dual and took another ride with a designated examiner 3 weeks later and passed. The DPE said as he handed me the temporary certificate: "This is a license to learn, you still have a lot to learn". IFR rides can be very challenging.

Very challenging, but if you pass the first time you deserve it? And if you fail and then pass later on, it makes you a better pilot. Thank you so much for sharing your expense, really appreciate it!

ex military and airline pilot here. I'm disturbed that you only want familiar approaches for your check ride. A good examiner will give you ALL unfamiliar approaches and procedures, to see how you handle it. He's there to see how you'd handle weather and malfunction-related diversions in adverse conditions. Learn your stuff cold and don't ever rely on getting conditions you expect.

Commenting this 3 years later as I’m soon to take my instrument checkride. I also failed my first checkride on private not doing the right input for unusual attitudes, everything else was sat. I already have the understanding that if it was a discontinuance, it’s more so for the safety of the pilot, not that you are a terrible pilot at all. All of us are here in their own journey to become a better pilot regardless of what their final outcome is to be. Don’t let these failures hold you down rather take them as an experience to continue to be the best pilot no matter the situation as anything can happen in the air. Use the knowledge you’ve prepared for any flight :)

Damn, it's been 4 years since I've done my IFR checkride (and has been my only fail since CFI). I got the same approaches, Oceanside VOR-A, RNAV, then ILS back into KMYF. I was literally almost done with my checkride, then ATC was giving me the approach clearance "fly heading ___, maintain _____ till established". Then everything looked REALLY good, then I realized I was too high on my glideslope. I was like ????. Then I realized that when I was maintaining the altitude that ATC gave me, I was 1000 feet over the altitude because I misread the altitude. I tried to correct for it by descending really fast, then I was failed for basically not having a steady approach. It was a stupid mistake all because I misread the analog gauges. I was so used to flying glass panels where the altitudes were in plain numbers, that when I was trying to do approaches on steam gauges I misread the altimeter. Such a sucky feeling when you fail a checkride in flight. I was so nervous for the oral, only to find out that I failed the flight instead. Thankfully all I had to do to pass was refly the ILS, which I did the next day. Won't ever make that mistake again since we all learn from our mistakes.

Just failed instrument checkride today the feeling I had in my stomach during the debrief was unexplainable and I felt like I let down my instructor, my parents, some of my other pilot freinds and especially me. I have learned to trust myself more than the Garmin when dealing with published holds and determing entry heading. As well as not being scared to ask ATC if they wanted be to intercept the localizer

Thank you for your sharing, failure during the flight is very normal, no matter how excellent you are. If you know a little of aviation history, you could know lots of very good pilots who did bad decision or did totally badly in some flight. What you learn from your mistakes or failures makes more sense in the long run.

I will add my two cents. I took my checkride April 1st. My first advise is to go 120% prepared for the oral. Many DPEs will judge your checkride from that point on. Study, study, and study some more. As for the approaches, it is very likely you are flying and doing your checkride at a near airport. Go to all of them. I had 8 airports that my instructor and I thought was within checkride distance and I went to all of them and did all of the approaches. I even memorized most of the plates. Now, here is where I could have failed, in my personal case. I had an airport that had Rnav A and B. One runway was closed and the one opened was a right pattern uncontrolled airport. I marked all my plates with this information. The DPE was simulating being ATC and he gave me vectors to final and the approach was circling. My gps went wrong. Everything I loaded was wrong and I was 3 miles from the FAF. The best advise my instructor gave me was to stay calm. This things happen in real life. I actually told my DPE (ATC simulated) to vector me out from the approach while I troubleshoot my GPS. He gladly did it. When I was all ready to do a safe approach again I told him I was ready to get back to the airport, so I did. Now the tricky part was the right hand pattern. Bcs you had to overfly a runway to do the circle to land. I was fully prepared for this scenario bcs I knew was something different from this airport. Guess that the pattern had 4 other airplanes doing touch and goes so in advance I told him what was my plan. At 1.3 I told him I was at minimums and ready to circle BUT I was going to circle a wider pattern do to traffic. He instead told me go miss and advised I did good. On my way back to the home airport and doing my final approach which was an ILS approach, ATC drove me crazy bcs there was a solo student who was messing everything in the pattern. I had to report a lot if points on the approach which complicated things. Gladly, again I kept calm and everything went as I planned it other than atc being very annoying. However it was my home airport so I knew exactly where I was. The DPE was very pleased I kept him fully awared of why I was doing things the way I did it. They are judging a lot of safety. So please study for your oral and memorize and study plates for as many airports you have that are good candidates for the DPE to take you. Practice published holds and published missed approaches. Don't let anything be a "new" thing other that ATC and remember, ask ATC if in doubt. Tell them to spell the fixes. Don't let them overwhelm you If they talk to fast tell them to slow down. Those are my two cents and I hope it helps.

Had to ask the examiner if there was any ice on my wings. Pass but it was very nerve racking and hard. Be safe in flying and dont take any short cuts.
