One of my favorite tools when grafting is parafilm. In this video I break down the reasons I like to use it and cover some of the issues you may run into while using it.

DUDE Just discovered your channel. I moved to the Rockies at 8,500 FT elevation fully off grid having to haul in all of my own water.... The first day I broke ground I started planting shit. Grabbed all the wild medicinals and edibles from around the area and replant them on my property. Kept all of the wild berries on my land Saskatoon bushes chokecherry trees.... Planted 5 rootstock apple trees and a pear tree. Turns out I thought I was growing apple trees but apparently I either grabbed suckers or rootstock from an orchard and for the last 4 years I've been watering them and lugging water in here for them they've never flowered or produced apples and it's my understanding they would never have so this year I did honey crisp and honey crisp red Scion modified cleft graphs on all of them. I don't know if I put too much parafilm tape on them or if the buds will be able to pop through or not but I do see at least one is budding and it's been 2 weeks. This is a whole learning process for me but I started a food Forest early as early as I could. I just keep planting stuff in the ground every day! Learning more everyday 10 years up here fully off-grid a mile snowshoe back into the woods. I look forward to looking more into your channel it's how I built my house RU-vid tutorials😂 Keep up the great work man thanks for the info! 😁✌️

I have also had good luck using two layers of the different tapes. First wrap the graft and the scion in parafilm to make it watertight so nothing dries out. Then wrap just the graft contact section with electrical tape, pulling as tight as possible to really clamp down on the cut to make sure the cambium layers can transfer the sap between them. Some people use rubber bands to do the clamping action and tie it off. But with electrical tape I do not have to fiddle around trying to tie anything with my big fat fingers. :)

I need to add something here. Never apply electrical tape directly to the tree bark. The glue/sticky stuff of the tape will somehow destroy and damage the layers of the bark, injuring the tree. So, make sure to only apply electrical(or duct tape) over the parafilm so the bark does not get damaged. I still have nasty scars on some mulberry trees where I tried using only electrical tape.

I've never been one to have rubber bands on hand, but I'm pretty sure I'd just get frustrated keeping the graft in place while trying to tie it tight enough. With some of the bud grafting I did this year, I used electrical tape over the parafilm to help hold the buds in with some extra pressure. I'm still waiting to see how it turns out, but I'm sure it can't hurt. I absolutely agree about not applying it directly to bark! I've seen the same results you described on grafts I did where my tape contacted the bark - especially on the first grafts I did years ago, before I knew that would happen. Thanks for sharing!

Good old days when starting this stuff and i bought a "grafting tape" that was basically some cling film haha - parafilm is the good shyt

To aid the elasticity of the wrap put the piece in direct sunlight for about 15 min

my big question is will wrapping parafilm alone cause scion to overheat in full sun? 🤔 I have a feeling although it will act like a greenhouse first.but then "steam" will escape by punching thru parafilm thus cooling down the scion? 🤔🤔

Thank you for the video! Do you think, I can also use to seal the wounds of my bonsai when I cut bigger branches?
@HonestHomesteading
@HonestHomesteading Год назад
You could, but I don't think you need to. The intention behind the parafilm is to keep moisture from the stock directed to a scion that would otherwise dry out. The pruning wound shouldn't dry out since it is connected to the trunk/root system that provides it with moisture. The natural mechanisms in the bonsai should heal it over just fine, or if you really want to use something, get a tree wound sealer and apply it immediately after pruning.

can you cut tape by length, like if i buy 4 inch wide one, can i cut it into 4 pieces of 1 inch ? Will it start tearing? will it be useable? hopefully u understand me :D
@HonestHomesteading
@HonestHomesteading 2 года назад
Yup! You can cut it however you like, but you should cut it before stretching it. My roll is 2 inches wide and I find that works well. I leave it 2 inches wide, but usually cut it maybe 6 inches long. You will have to experiment with it to see what works best for you.

Not breaking tip, fold it once and you'll have double layer of Parafilm and will not be so easy to break.

@@HonestHomesteading You know, I made that comment right before I bought a 250 ft roll myself? I could not believe how awesome that tape is. I use about 1.5 inches of it each time I graft an avocado because that's all you need once it stretches and wraps the entire scion. I think that roll will allow me to graft about 2000 trees... easily. One of the best purchases I've ever made and it pays itself back within ONE successful grafted avocado tree that can cost me $50 here in Florida. Now I have 150 mango seedlings ready to graft in my backyard. Thanks for the video! The plastic tape that comes with the kit is especially bad because the buds cannot break through it and you have to remove it when you notice them taking, and that forces you to watch your graft daily! And you can totally screw up your graft by removing that plastic from it and exposing it to air and also damaging the union. With parafilm you don't have to do any of that. It's worth gold.
