I actually like the idea of a parkour style obstacle course base for the zombies. But using, like, an entire small town. Set up opportunities to hold a position for a short time, recover, and take out some of the zombies chasing you before moving on to the next area. It would also be interesting seeing what you could come up with, but might need a playthrough dedicated to just that concept as i dont think it would be something to come up on the fly. Maybe a map with more than the average number of small towns so that you can move from town to town for each horde, having to clear and prep each new town for the horde. Probably a bit far fetched as a concept. Edit: The more i think about it, the more i like the idea. Seeing what you came up with Ive thought of a few things. Ive never really used land mines, but i can see them as being very effective paired with this style. Pre setting up barbed wire and spike traps on your path. Pit traps with Molotov/pipe bomb opportunities, etc.

Yup been doing this since the start in 7 days. It's a lot of fun and it works well on any difficulty because of how broken the parkour perk is. Pretty nice hitting level 300 with no deaths because you can bunny hop 15 feet in the air away from any danger

Ya gotta do whatever is fun, no shame in that. Personally, I enjoy converting random POIs into a full combo horde and crafting base. Including aesthetics and decorations. Each one is a different challenge in terms of layout, especially when you incorporate a garage with powered doors and such. Basically, 7 Days house flipper. I’m sure I’ll burn out at some point and either switch games or try new mods or something. Whatever works, works. 👍

Have you thought about doing a series with no horde nights? You could have big wandering hordes that grow in size as your game stage increases. They appear randomly as well. It would make doing poi's pretty interesting with the option to be trapped in there with a giant horde trying to smash their way in. Might be pretty interesting and gives you a break from the horde base building loop.

I feel like the problem is that the zombie AI in early alphas was crude and players found the flaws in it rather quickly. Now they seem to be reacting to what the players do rather than designing a zombie that behaves like a zombie should. Players made underground bases the zombies couldn't deal with, make them dig like gophers on crack. Players made fall bases that could instantly kill zombies, ok make the zombies never die from falls. Players made loop bases, make the zombies break stuff till the loop breaks. The spider zombie is a prime example of this type of reactionary behavior. Not only does it jump a bit higher then most people build base walls, it can jump horizontally in a straight line thru a one block opening. I would like to see more creative mechanics, for example a zombie falling from a ledge, catching it and hanging from it, and another zombie stepping on that one to leap forward towards your base. A frenzy mode similar to destroy area that makes the zombie do more damage to blocks, but also damages the zombie and anything around it, including other zombies. It has always struck me as a bit odd that a blood moon crazed mindless zombie will run in your direction, then stop and turn around to take the stairs behind it to get to you, after doing some quick math on exactly how much concrete you used to reinforce your pillars. Sorry for the long comment, I just felt it needed to be said.

I won't lie, your thumbnails are really good - go well with the rants. And I do get your "aversion" to horde base building. I suffer from the same. Therefore, I will usually use a sturdy building as is for night 7 and potentially 14. And I may make a base for night 21 usually.

I do a bit of a cop out that lasts till day 28 at least, depending on difficulty. Clear the Dead Rooser, chop out three blocks worth of the upstairs floor and railing and replace with a three block long thin beam in the centre, roughly above the main entrance. Build a usual fighting position on the other side of the beam and take the side wall two or three blocks back to protect from cop spit. If you have Molotovs or pipe bombs, you can move back till you clear this wall and thrown them at the base of the stairs. Close up any holes in the roof and windows. Half and hour and almost no resources. I build a ladder up the back wall to get me to the roof and then down through a hatch I built in there.

It became clear years back, that TFP had absolutely no idea what would make a good zombie game. Every version after 5 just got worse and more ridiculous. The game has become way too much of a mess due to them stretching out development far too long. They should have released a limited scope game that was fun for what it was, and moved on to a sequel if they wanted to go deeper.

I honestly deactivate blood moons in my solo-playthroughts, but I get normal zombies to be stronger / more in cities, so when I have to "scavenge" or just to do quests I get A LOT of guys trying to take me down, it might sound "easy" but sometimes, having 4 feral guys or some military bozos at day 6 is not that easy xD EDIT: I obviously play in the highest difficulty, idk the name in english, in Italian it is "Folle"

I also have always wondered what is it exactly the devs expect you to do on horde night. Like using real world logic build a house with shooting/melee holes on all sides on ground level? The base is gone in a few minutes. Set up hundreds of spikes traps? They don't last. Just hide behind 4 walls and a ceiling with no holes? They still know exactly where you are and break through easily. I feel like to a new player playing solo theres no real solution besides to go to the internet and look up the meta. On multiplayer you can cover multiple points of a regular building from a roof and do okay-ish at least early on. You said it perfectly the devs have been trying to make it harder by directly countering meta's but it has evolved so beyond to a point where it just doesn't make any sense to inexperienced players or people not following video game logic like zombies being blocked by trapdoors in open state and to make them path over thin poles so the trickle in properly. Also zombies should not be able to do anything to top tier blocks outside of constant attacks for days to weeks if we follow traditional zombie rules and exploding zombies doing massive block damage should be like a final boss not a common enemy on horde night.

I know this is a little behind, but my pals and I don't build any of those types of "meta" bases out of principle. We routinely build a fortess surrounded by all sorts of traps in between layers of fences. And honestly its fun as hell, because it feels like actual stakes are involved. And when we finally get overwhelmed its back to day 1 with a new design

The "spawn in rage mode" is supposed to be a "way to conserve memory" on horde night allowing the ai to only process/control a few zombies at a time. This nerfs bedrock bases because the "dumber" zombies will dig, that creates a hole, breaking the path, and soon you have them snaking through the earth. Guns Nerds and Steel found out about this out in his bedrock series when A21 started. Unless you start out with a giant pad of 3 thick steel they will not path correctly.

For my dad who i only ever play with its building and altho i hate collecting resources ill do it for him so he can enjoy it as well.. however he used to make perfect hoarde night bases but lately they've all been failing which has lead to me as soon as it falls ill just parkour my way through the hoard! There was one time he died 10 times and i didnt die once granted it was only like day 21 but i honestly had more fun that way and thats all that matters.. we used to play with zombies could only ever walk just because thats how we preferred it but now they only walk at night and thats just fun for us

I Agree with you that for the most part all TFP's do now is try to break your bases that work. I recall back durring like A16 you could make a horde base walls out of "Wooden Chairs" facing backwards and Zombies just "Walked" at them. So then TFP's made it so Zeds attack chairs. Then there was the "Toothy pole" base. TFP's then nerfed poles to take 4x damage. Upside down spikes...gone. Barb wire slow down....gone. door traps....gone. High slope walls Zeds cant walk on but you can...gone. Killing corridor...(Tried to get rid of it but made it better by accident), Zombie forcefields.... gone. Scaffolding ladders....They plan to fix this. Its just a never ending game of "Haa that works"....TFP "Haa. now it dont."

it's very frustrating. I'm going to just turn off blood night and go wandering horde route instead. Rather have random Z spawning out of the blue than horde nights. they're just a waste of time, sit there and kill Z, repair the base so that they dont break it, a few traps... it's just... tedious. And building them is tedious. Not fun.

it really does feel like fun pimps are basically being party poppers for the player base sometimes.. by removing things that are fun or having very questionable things in the game.. like removing bedrock bases, by having zombies start randomly digging if they are an certain distance away.. or just the very Very Questionable Design choices of the Navezgane Map... Or the thing you pointed out in this video, about how Zombies just randomly start destroying the base like one random block on the pathway to the killing zone... And lets not forget the infamous Stubble forward attack/The Speed boost.

I've been doing play throughs using increased wandering hordes instead of horde nights because blood moon hordes don't feel that threatening but getting caught out in the wild by 30 or so ferals at any time can get you wrecked or at least make your mining trips and questing a little more challenging.

The huge dog or bear hordes that spawn are absolutely terrifying and lethal if they spawn early game though
@shadowalkerwho

@@Jane-Doh it's one of the things I like about Darkness Falls, their default wandering hordes are MUCH meaner and a far bigger threat. I just switch up the frequency so that I can't reasonably predict when they're due (like Min 8hrs, Max 36hrs) gives me a chance for 2-3 in the same day but I also can't do the "oh, I should just wait a bit to do X because we're over due for a horde. Sounds to me like FunPimps have a problematic case of Oppositional Defiance Disorder. Aside from never updating the console version of 7dtd, that's the thing that pisses me off most about them. They've lost sight of letting us have a satisfying hordenight where the zeds get chawn up on the walls and have become obsessed with opposing everything we think of - it's the 2A/ATF rivalry all over again. Someone needs to have a very, very firm talk with FunPimps. Because this is not the way forward.

I'm almost an OG in 7dtd and still come back from time to time. Years ago in the earliest bases it was more like being kids again building our fortresses together. One friend was determined to be a sniper in an overlook high tower, another was strictly an archer, and so on. Yes, you can still do those things, but we all know that the vanilla game progression could do much better at rewarding those who stray from a limited META. I'm not saying it's easy for TFP to make choices to please everyone, but base building is the single biggest reason that I don't expect many friends to stay deeply interested in the game. When a recent friend began enjoying getting the hang of 7 Days I stayed out of the way for the most part as he was having childlike FUN with his first serious base as he explained how this idea and that might work. I sighed, realizing that he would have to learn why most of his cool ideas were pointless. Ah well, a learning curve is also part of the fun, and 7dtd is still a great open world sandbox with great potential, but I welcome changes.

Do a base that shoots darts up ladders. You could have multiple tiers of 10 block high ladders, with 1,500 darts per dart trap - that would be allot. You could build a pyramid with a base 10x10x10, the next tier would be 8x8x10, and the next tier would be 6x6x10, and the next tier would be 4x4x10. That could be 88 traps (132,000 darts).

I remember back in the day when building a wall around your main loot base with a mote filled with spikes was the META, but guess what, the anti fun pimps decided they didn't like motes, walls and spikes, so they made stacking gore blocks, when players figured out how to counter the stacking gore they went and completely removed the log spikes. I quit playing 7 days to die almost 3 years ago, and I swear I will never waste my time with the fucking game again. Nor will I purchase any games or projects developed by TFP in the future. This game use to be fun 5-6 years ago, but with every new patch/update, they find ways more and more to make you die quickly or struggle to stay fed and hydrated. Fuck them, and fuck their game. I know I havent watched every 7DTD video youve made but Ive watched at least the last 6 series I think? Have you ever done a massive undergound base? Like maybe an underground bedrock rate maze style base? See if they will run the maze or just dig straight down to you? Maybe even put in multiple entrances but them have them all feed to the same killing point you are at? I think that would be cool to see your take on that.

This is why I've resorted to "minimalist" horde bases that have electric fences that connect from the front of the horde base to right under my shooting position, parallel to the direction the zombies come from. I can easily repair the fences throughout the night and it's so easy to set up compared to the large, multi-trapped horde bases I used to make.

I hear you! It's now 21.2 (b30) and day 21 they almost tore my completely cement base to the ground and let me tell you, that base was SOLID. Why would they take the most entertaining part of the game and intentionally try to destroy it. The part us players (not creators that build all day every day) love about the game! I get that you're sick of it, I really do. But it's the part a lot of us love and they just want to take that from us. I just don't understand why developers always do that. I know, I know. If they destroy what makes us successful then we play more to figure out how to win... but that gets old after a while and then they'll just kill their entire player base altogether. is that what they want?

I once had a variable horde night mod where your horde nights could be either 6, 7, or 8 days after the previous one. I had planned on making my horde base on day 7, but my first horde showed up on night 6, so I had a lovely night of running around the streets killing zombies. It was the most fun horde night I had that playthrough.

Watching you handle horde nights without a base convinced me to try the same. Now I never use horde bases when I'm playing Fortitude. I can do the whole thing with a stretch of road, and maybe a little place to hide for 10 seconds while I use medical stuff if needed. Now I build parkour obstacle courses for horde nights when playing Agility. For Perception, Strength, and Intellect builds I still use a horde base... but even then I no longer make "the formula" bases. I make them quirky and catered to the build & playstyle I'm working on. So... thanks for the inspiration.

Guns, Nerds, & Steel was big on building underground bases. He built one on his first run of A21, and swore he'd never do it again due to increased digging by zombies. Also, he discovered the "dumb" zombies that sort of get lost when they spawn in on hoard night, and automatically just attack the base. That probably isn't the right way to describe it, but yeah, it's a thing.

Only allowed to use craft stations I am lucky enough to find. Can only craft from menu what is allowed. Everything else is found, looted or purchased. I love this playstyle. BTW thanks for entertaining, straight to the point videos and your honesty. 👍

Something I do to have more fun on hordes is building a base where the zombies actually destroy blocks to get to you instead of just a corridor base. It actually feels more like a horde coming at you from all angles. So forget all your skill and knowledge and just build the base of your dreams and try to defend it.
@Novocane23
@Novocane23 8 месяцев назад
It's always irked me that horde bases are preferable to using your home because I love to build, constantly having ideas. The problem is that my builds are often larger than 50x50 - which means my walls are basically pointless. Moving to one side to defend makes them spawn inside my walls on the opposite side. So...I have to build a base specifically for horde night - it's not even hyper efficient because I despise building stuff that looks awful simply because it's the 'best' horde base design. If I build something, it's going to look like it actually belongs in the world - almost like it was a prefab. Yet their changes actively discourage this.

Fun pimps really need better AI. A mix of dumb A15/16 zombies and A21 get to your level engineering zombies. I am getting bored of 7 days unfortunately because of this lack of challenge. It has gotten to the point where I don't die on a horde night... it's the POI I dont know that catches me off guard that catches me.
@va_str
@va_str 10 месяцев назад
I think the entire concept of horde nights just doesn't really work on higher difficulties. It essentially requires you to cheese it, because every zombie spawns with an engineering degree and that sixth player-sense. I'd like to build a cool base like the traders, and somehow defend that against the hordes, but that simply isn't how horde nights or the zombie AI in general works. What's needed is a good horde control/spawner/AI mod and just disabling that boring vanilla horde night nonsense entirely. It's a fun gimmick when you're starting out but after thousands of hours of playing the game, horde night defenses just bore me to death. Personally I use juiced up wandering hordes and have horde nights disabled and that's generally more fun, especially when 20 extra zombies wander into the POI you're clearing, but it's still a far cry from what this game could be.

As someone who is really new to the game, I don’t understand why anyone would want to build a “horde base”. Why would you want guaranteed safety in a game like this where progression is already rather fast. In my limited experience, I have the most fun on the horde nights that bring me as close to death as possible without being oppressive. If I don’t use 75% of my ammo and meds on horde night, why did I bother spending the last 6 hours looking for them?

When I saw horde bases that exploited AI to make conga lines of zombies, I just wasn't interested. My friends and I just build a square bunker-the kind of thing you'd build as a defensible location in real life anyway. We've experimented with pyramids and such, but ultimately the bunker is just a solid classic to defend.

It’s funny how you talk about fun pimps ruining base designs, because I stumbled upon this video trying to figure out why my base design stopped working. I like building a normal box “turtle” base that has all my crafting stuff in, and then I surround that box with stairs and extra walls and have my horse base on top of my real base. It normally works great as a 2 in 1 design, but recently zombies for no reason would rather tear through 3 layers of walls and run through my basement instead of walking around and attack my doors. I hope my design didn’t get banned by fun pimps 😅

I'm so disillusioned with horde bases that I just simply turn the horde off now. Usually, I play either Darkness Falls or Romero with the difficulty turned up. I got tired of gather resources, build/expand horde base, and repairing after whatever day the horde would fall on (got bored with knowing when the horde would come so changed that setting). I want to explore and wander the apocalypse, not constantly have to expand and repair something only used for the horde. The wandering hordes you run into while exploring feel more fun to me so I go for settings/mods that expand those.

So stop making bases..... and make systems instead.... I have a section around a certain blding.... with sky walkways... between bldings , flip & stop, then build areas of ambush.... Surely u all have seen the number one rule in zombie films.... don't get trapped in the open or in a blding... and yet people are trapping themselves in buldings. Always go for block destroy..in skills, that way you can bypass many of the intricate traps built by funpimps... lootpimp the low levels with books.

what they are trying to get rid of is AI mechanic abuse. A base shouldn't be "impossible to defeat" because of an exploit; it should be "impossible to defeat" because of wise base design. For example, they've never done anything against bases that use pressure plates and hatch drops because you are using a legitimate idea and running with it. (though you can't use hatches to defend yourself anymore since cops target them like the plague) The community is rather split on it, but them increasing the difficulty of horde nights, what makes 7 days to die unique, can only make sense. On the other hand, most of what they are doing can be cured, not by increasing the AI intelligence, but by making a zombie type that counters such base designs. A tougher flying zombie that comes at you head on or one that hovers over paths (thus not getting stuck on blocks) would be a good example. gun traps and turrets could still eat them alive, but relying on difficult pathing in later hordes will lead to a game over.

A21 doesn't feel like a survival game anymore. It feels more like a mobile game with loot boxes instead. I'm just opening (mail)boxes to get lucky. And doing some quests to get some random loot, which is either garbo or completely OP. With a perk you can get rid of the reloading slowing effect(whatever its called) and I have 0 deaths at total. But because of I don't have a good pc and some good equipments to record, I am just playing alone and having a 0 death world just feels both good and a little boring.

I build horde bases just for the sheer fun of it, lol. I even purposely made them a lot weaker, and refuse to use any cheese methods...so it feels more like I'm a genuine survivor under harsh conditions and serious threats from zombies. Building horde bases are like a roleplaying stuff to me, and it's fun! I'm of those that enjoy zombies crushing my entire base down. That's the entire essence of 7 days to die. You are simply delaying the inevitable...your own final death. If you can have a base and become invincible for the rest of the game, then to me the fun is gone.

I dislike the whole concept of horde bases because it reminds me of the hyper optimized meta try harding from MMOs. If you dont crank up the bloodmoon zombie count to insane numbers you can really just build a wall, dig a moat, put in some spikes and traps, turrets, its fine. And you can play with friends, man the walls, have fun. Imagine calling up your mates and ask them to sit in a concrete box shooting through a 1x1 for half an hour.

Concerning Zeds and bases, I agree; TFP seem to be tweaking them to attack structures outside of the rage mode. Seen other creator's bases getting usually hammered since 21 recent updates and its rather random. Also doubt it is a 'bug' but TFP doing the usual screwing with the player base. This may of provided the blue prints for a new 7d2d series however, the no base or nomad challenge; get say a truck at the start and use that as your base and increase loot to just keep going from city to city; may need to tone down horde nights or remove them all together but bump up zeds in the world? (upside, no horde base or even normal base building)

Anti hordebase idea: Hold down POIs, but you are not allowed to build, upgrade or repair the bottom 2-3 layers. Defend as long as possible, until everything collapsed, then run away (maybe to the next one you prepared). Let them devastate the whole city - you hate it anyway, don't you?
