Thank you! someone finally speaking out about this. GoPro has the action camera scene so monopolized they just don't seem to care at all about quality anymore. Their company has been on such a heavy downward spiral over the years and they do nothing besides take notes from apple limit you and make things worse. Something DRASTICALLY needs to be done. I miss the old days when GoPros were strong as a tank, they didn't glitch constantly, the software systems were simple and easy, everything was compatible with 3rd party accessories and you didn't need to constantly connect your camera to your phone for weird reasons. GoPro please figure it out
I own two GoPro 9s and I have upgraded to the 11. I couldnt DISAGREE more with the critiques in this video more. First off the Gopro 11 has 10-bit color. Which completely clowns the 9's color and went totally unmentioned in this video. Like the dude didnt even know about it. Then he puts it into a funky hyperview or whatever and then complains it looks distorted. Well duh! You are trying to cram more field of view in to the same size frame, of course its gonna look effed up. If you want it to look normal, use the linear mode. And lastly, the Enduro batteries are completely superior to the old ones. I can get an hour per battery turning it off and on and when leaving it on continuously I gave gotten 1 hour and 16 mins.. I might have gotten 30 minutes off one of those old blue batteries. Plus, I do go out in the snow. With the old batteries the camera was basically a paperweight at temps under 55 degrees. It would last 6 or 7 seconds and shut off. With the Enduro batteries I have yet to encounter that issue once.. honestly, its sad this video has so many views when the content creator is giving such an inaccurate review of the product.
@@nicksangetta8874 I looked back and forth like twice and could see a night and day difference between the two. details and colours most notably. I just got my 11 and admitedly at least in darker scenes there does appear to be a stuttering of footage but only in certain environments using superview, something that should be easily fixed. The battery seems fine to me, I went on a 3.5/4 hour hike taking clips every 5 or so minutes in 4k 60fps and it died just at the end. a neat feature that seems gimmicky but I liked was the voice commands and when the cameras powered down you can still press record and it will start, when finished it will turn itself off. not sure if its been around a while but I liked it. I'd say if you have the previous two, don't bother as there isn't enough difference to invest.
@@zytoses9223 I love the voice commands. Although on the 11 they removed the ability to turn the camera ON with voice commands. Pretty stupid.. but it still works for the rest of the commands. I hardly ever press the actual buttons. But the color upgrade was worth it for me to upgrade from the 9 to 11. It looks so much better in my opinion.. plus I no longer have to film in flat and add the color later. The vivid setting on the 9 is absolute garbage. It was unusable.
cant wait to have the bike swapped with the ko kit. heard its extremely powerful and the motor doesnt actually overheat as easily as the stock sur ron motor
I like the max lens look. It's not as oversharpened, the distortion is much more acceptable and I do in fact think the FOV is bigger. It may just not look like it because of the very extreme distortion in HyperView. Just look at your comparison at 8:11. With max lens you can see the plant and leaves on the right, while you cannot in HyperView.
superview and hyperview give you an increase in vertical FOV but at the cost of the distortion. It's kind of like stretching a 4:3 image into a 16:9, but gopro does this a little different by keeping the center normal and it moves all the stretching to the sides to give it a warped look.
It looks like the Max Lens increases horizontal fov at the expense of vertical fov compared to hyperview, while also reducing distortion, so it boils down to use case and preference
If you want to preserve the original video quality but still have a telemetry overlay, I have a workflow that, I think, does a really good job. I use Race Render to create the data overlay and I export it as a video file with just the data overlay on top of a blue screen, not the gopro video. Then I import the data overlay video file and the gopro video files into my video editor. I chroma key out the blue background on the data overlay video track. This way you end up with a data overlay but don't have to run your gopro video through an extra processing step that could degrade the quality of the video.
Sounds like a good idea I’ve always been wondering why even after following all the instructions from my camera to RU-vid my videos always come out looking like shit while everyone else’s is like a cinematic film
@@slapshotjack9806 do not export HEVC. RU-vid cannot handle h265 compression well and always outputs shit results. Always export H264 then go to RU-vid.
I use the Hero9 with the Max Lens. Haven’t upgraded to the 11 but the hyperview distortion would make me feel “sea sick” in a way if I watch it back. I’m okay with staying at 2.7k with the Max lens on the 9. At least until they fix the issue
@@DanDennedy my point is that he bought an upgrade that is meant for the camera he's moving away from. The Max lens mod was built for the Hero 9, but still helped the Hero 10. The Hero 11 is compatible with the mod, but it won't improve it.
Hey Man, hate to be that guy but it seems like you didn't actually know what you were buying when you bought the max lens mod haha it's only purpose is to create better stabilisation in a wide FOV. so you can have the horizon locked with it on and the lens is still wide and not linear like the camera does without the mod. that's literally it, it's niche product for sure but is amazing when used for certain things. Honestly I think what you need is a 360 camera like the GoPro MAX or Insta360
Hmm, not sure I agree with most of this. Remember, the Max Lens Mod was brought out for the HERO9. It's an older product, and yes, it can still be used with the HERO11, but I feel that it's a legacy product. The good news is that the taller sensor on the 11 would open up the ability to create a new Max Lens Mod that focusses its imaging circle on the same sensor area that is used in the new Linear + Horizon lock mode. If GoPro did that, then it should be possible to get an ultra-wide field of view in 4K with full horizon lock. Whether they will do it or not is another matter, but it's technically possible. Regards to editing, yeah, it's not great if there is that problem with telemetry, although GoPro hasn't discontinued the desktop app. It's now the GoPro Player and incorporates ReelStead. Maybe they'll add telemetry again to it in the future. One thing I will say is that although the colours on the DJI Action 3 are not quite as good as GoPro, the Ultra-wide mode on it is, well, truly ultra-wide. I'm hoping GoPro increases the FOV on future cameras to compete, since the Action 3 does so with comparatively little distortion. But it's all good for competition.
As a GoPro Fusion user, who bought the device when it was a year after being discontinued -- I feel your pain. They have even removed the resource pages from their website, so we must fully rely on Facebook Groups for info. Then come to find out, one of the issues with a specific app not allowing users to import/export and edit footage, is an expiration date on the music library -- which many of us will never use!
I liked hyperview at first. but when i watch it on a big screen it gives me a headache. I think the 8:7 Wide works better. and then just crop some of the top and bottom off to make it 16:9
I think the only reason to have the max lens mod is if you're doing flips and whatnot and need the horizon level all the time. .other than that, image will def. look like shhhh. But it's nice to see someone else out there totally skipped hero 10 and went to 11. That's what I did. Hero 9 to Hero 11. For the most part, I'm satisfied with the upgrade. Can't hate on it. .and the more coloring with the 10 bit color. I notice the difference in my playback footage. But I really like the higher frame rate with higher resolution for recording my dog in motion. His slo mo is great. Had to update my external hard drive capacity [to 20tb] to keep all the footage. These videos of my dog will be cherished for all time in the future. Love that little guy. . .
For max lens mod: rec in 2.7k 4:3 then squish it in post to 16:9 This will get you the fov you want. Idk how it compares to HyperView but its wider than superview (I have a hero 10)
Great review indeed. I am glad I kept my GoPro 9 and never upgraded to the 11. Also, man I SUPER agree with you about the crappy phone app, while not having any real desktop computer application to use. Even Insta360 who offers phone editing app for their 360 cameras, have also a desktop app available to use (which is the only one I use). I don't understand how people can make professional editing using their phone, which is not made for this at all. 🤔 PS: Non related to GoPro but had to add this; Be careful out there with your bike. I saw you ride in a "wild" way sometimes, which looks pretty cool on camera, until you get hit by a distracted driver, and then it will look less cool from the hospital's bed (talking from experience).
The HERO11 will record uncropped 5.3K 8:7 aspect ratio. Hyperview is just taking that and stretching it to 16:9. I’m a big fan of 16:9 but I’d prefer watching the unstretched 8:7 for your riding content. Also, when using the Max Lens Mod, you can keep the GoPro in normal mode (I.e., not enabling Max Lens Mode) and it will record a fisheye circle view. This will get you a much wider angle. Especially if you use the full 8x7 aspect ratio. Loved the video! I never considered some of your needs for a GoPro. It’s a huge bummer they haven’t kept the desktop software up-to-date!
@@danvinogradov138 You can upload the 4:3 or 8:7 to youtube. You can check that if you download the video, but when you go full screen on youtube, it will ofc have bezels on the side if you have 16:9 monitor, or am i missing something? I was using 4:3 monitor on youtube and if i play 4:3 video, it is full screen
TL;DR: Max lens is poop, rest is ok. Telemetry problems, but was fixed in an annoying way. Sur Ronster very angry and waving arms. There, saved you 15 minutes.
Glad to see videos where people are talking about it. I have stopped using GoPro completely. It freezes and hangs and very unpredictable. Moved to Insta 360. And super happy
I've never had a gopro but I got the DJI Action 2 and love it. It's much more of a blend of a mini-cam or vlogging cam in comparison to the Action 1, Action 3, or GoPro, but the imagine quality is great and it's really a very wonderful product.
the Action 4 is more than likely the one you'll want now, kind of depends for use case. Some quirks with the Action 2 but it's also in a league of it's own as a small camera. The Pocket 1 + 3 are also great. Even DJI had the Pocket 1 refurbished for 99 or 109 recently, I forget. Lot of camera for the price, and the stabilization is better on the pocket than any mainstream digital stabilization, such as whatever newest GoPro.@@TheOriginalMarimoChan
Actually I find the opposite to be true. Heros 10 and 11 are vastly improved in reliability and speed of start/stop rec. I upgraded to the 11 from the 9, night and day difference. I don't even use the 9 anymore and will sell it.
These are good points you raise with the GoPro. If anything, I feel that GoPro should be getting better. Especially that more RU-vidrs are coming onto the scene and using this company's products. I recommend sending them an email with THIS video in a link. Good luck to you my dude.
You seriously need to do voice overs for Disney with that voice of yours. One of the youtubers I worked with to make famous, her aunt used to make 400k per episode voicing Bart Simpson. Could be worth you getting into. Part of your channel growth is that your voice is the voice of the Sur Ronster character. You're not (I won't mention your real name) any more. You're Sur Ronster. Your voice makes you that fun, 15 yr old, ebike, wheely kid.
To have telemetry overlaid, then the video has to rerender, so yes, it's going to look shit because it's running on mobile phone app designed for any kind of phone. You could use racerender for free overlay without quality loss
This is my first time seeing your channel and I enjoyed the video. I have used the gopro 5,7,8,10, Max and now the 11. I definitely agree with your review. The mobile and desktop app need the upgrades more than the cameras now. I am selling two of my 8’s and the max to get the X3.
Basically I had this problem with hero 9 and after going in depth review about different SD cards I bought a Samsung pro plus 128gb SD card on Amazon 19$ on sale and it’s been a month my go pro has zero issue now. If anyone reading this and having problem of camera freezing, SD card error, battery drain, etc. I would recommend you to use Samsung pro plus SD card and enduro battery, I hope it helps.
My man casually riding it like he stole it while chatting with himself on the internet. Gotta love it. P.S. Performance in the cold is important for us snow mexicans. Six minute battery life on cold winter days does get annoying eventually. Thank you.
I have the Hero 8 Black and the Hero 10 Black. Unless I'm shooting myself, where I can see the front lens of the 10, I find I'm using the 8 the most, because all the features I really need are there. There was a definite improvement from the 8 to the 10 with that front screen. I never had a 9, so I don't know if that was already there or not. I do NOT see enough difference in the 11 to justify an "upgrade".
Good camera and quality. Love it. But the only problem is the audio I could here the wind a lot and it was kind of drowning out your voice. Other than that love it!
Get an Osmo Action 3, You"ll love the connectivity with the Mimo app, magnetic mounts, ease of use, double screen with front screen fully operational to change settings from the front, the PQ and colors, the FOV, Linear, wide , extra wide, no heating, no freezing, charge to 80% in 18 min on the batteries and they fixed the focus with the FW upgrade also cheaper by $100.00 all around a solid buy for what you use and want. Thank You, Luis
The youtube algorithm thought I would like your video. It was right. After watching, I've eliminated the Hero 11 from my list of cameras I want to acquire. I like your style. Well done.
I bought my 2nd GoPro Hero 11 black yesterday and my first GoPro was around 2016 . Gopro's have completely changed from just being a action camera to cool looking gadgets now . Also if you guys notice earlier they would market it GoPro "be a hero" now you don't find it on their packages . It's sad , how the company just keep marketting what their cams can do now rather how a GoPro was initially
I definitely agree!!!!!! They have been slacking hard lately! I am very disappointed with my 10 and 11, seams like they are getting worse rather then better with quality and stabilization. I'll be going with DJI
Max mod gives a wider shot but not a taller shot. If you shoot 4:3 with the max and then stretch it to 16:9 in software you can get some really interesting results that way. The main purpose of the max is to get horizon leveling
There is actually an desktop app, now called gopro quick, which now have built in reelsteady stabilisation (that's a plus, perhaps the only one, but with gyroflow it's now pretty useless and limited) or how functional it is, since it's win10+ only (or OS10.9.x+). Max Lens was actually quite good on H9B with the timelapses/warps (the stab was slightly better for road footage). It's kind of useful if you fly RC/para/skydive/airsoft (if you're extremely careful or hack up some protection for it). It's best is actually at regular vlogging (even held sideways), just walking/running around, but the lack of ability to control exposure with it on in both video and photo makes it rather an ocassionally useful novelty, than a fully useful feature. As for scratching, i've been hammering at gopro about it at every possible occasion since max lens mod came out via every possible media, haven't received a single response about it, seems like they just don't give a f*, and the fact that there are actually protective covers for Hero Max and they decided to make max mod incompatible with it just and the salt to the wounds. The secret bonus is if you run MLM on a regular settings in wide/sv, you'll get that old school fish eye effect that was used back in the day in skateboarding videos and you can shoot some quite neat "planet" like photos. The fact that H11 is still locked at 2.7k60 like h9 was is ridiculous. You're already highly limited with ability to take long exposures since h9, no clue how much h11 changes that with it's "light painting" modes, but by the way changes are occurring within gopro i'd bet the ability to adjust them is rather limited, as they keep on trying to make it "easier" in use for ordinary people at the cost of any more serious tweaking of the settings for people that even barely scratched the surface of photo/video-graphy, so the whole meaning of pro mode settings went down the drain from h8 and up. Every touch screen responsivity since h6b is like going back to first touch screen smartphones - you smash it ten times, then it detects you pressed on the other side of the screen and i'd be surprised if it's any better than h9b, altho that's a really low hanging fruit, and even if it is, it doesn't mean sht if it's not at the very least h6b responsive (protective hardened glass included). On top of that, gopro app now requires access to your phone and contacts for some reason (totally not stealing any info - they even say that in a notice, so it must be true) in order to let you connect with the camera, making h11mini a complete garbage with no ability to change the setting at all (unless you don't mind companies collecting your data in exchange for ability to change even the most basic settings). But hey, you can now make videos for instagram and tiktok with it (like you couldn't just turn it sideways before... no sir, that's just insane). SO YEAH... they just keep f*ing things up, and as much as i hate DJI and Insta, i'll highly reconsider getting any other gopro ever again. Just way too many red flags popping up all the time, and it's ridiculous that chinese companies start to look more user friendly than an american one. The only worthy mod is Skyreat anamorphic lens, but only for gimballed/drone footage (since the built in stabilization messes up the image by shifting the crop value for some f*in reason making whole video wavy n floaty) it'll give you more natural, cinematic feel to videos and fix the fish eye to a degree, however you'll need to run it in linear mode and despite it being an extra wide lens, you'll end up with slightly lower FOV than regular wide setting (at least for best performance; still better looking than gp in wide tho, similarly to gopro video run through reelsteady or gyroflow, but wider and less distorted, cause the edges are not stretched in post so there's no loss in quality). You can run it in wide and remove the vignette in post, resulting in slightly higher fov than regular wide but it's kinda strange at the edges. It basically allows you to make 16:9 go to 21:9 or 4:3 to 16:9 giving you some "extra" sides or headspace and removing the fish eye, but then again - it's reduced fov due to linear mode and no stabilization, so i don't know how useful it would be for your type of content, but i assume not much, if at all.
I think the hero 11 was a great upgrade. There is almost no wind noises (which there are on the hero 9), the colors and the more fps makes a big difference for the video, and the hyperview is a great upgrade from the superview. i dont see why to hate it except for the max lens which doesnt make a big difference except the distortion. anyways great video with good comparisons :)
I think it's more about how everything gopro puts out comes with issues right out the box. Yes it works as stated, but it still overheats, still gets screen if death, has super view but super distorted... it's not ideal. I can't tell you how often the gopro fails on me the moment I really need it, it's not a consistent workhorse at all. It is a temperamental drama queen and we are calling them out
@@PoseidonProductions definelty if you’re living in a “warm” country the Gopro is not ideal. But for fx Denmark and Norway its fine cause it isnt too hot up here.
Back when you only used the GP7 the videos were excellent.. I love the horizon view on the GP10 but nothing else since the 7black makes much difference except for increased glitches.
I use the Hero7 for mainly BMX clips, and I've gotta say it's pretty good. The battery life is also good for a 2 year old camera. I haven't replaced it once since I bought the camera to. It's battery life lasts for a good session (Around 2-3 hours). It's quality is up to around 1280p and 60fps so it also gives a pretty good clean edge to it. I haven't really seen the point of upgrading to a better camera cause there's really no point currently
This is why I still use hero 8 black and battery life is better no extra silly front screens..just a good camera that works and hero 8 got several software upgrade it is good worth buying save alot of money and just have a hero 8 wait maybe for hero 15 to upgrade 😅
Hi! As a D.I.T do understand the struggle with your pick there. Personally I would do use hyperview and zoom in a bit before export. The Max version is just a gimmick for them to sell more shit to the customer. 60 FPS is so much better then 30 FPS so it was good buy for sure.
There are two ways to eliminate distortion of a wide angle image. You can make all lines straight, that is what hyper view tries. Or you can make all angles correct and all areas about the right size. That's what the max lens tries. Both modes do a good job. If you really want the bricks straight and your bike always the same size, you need a curved screen. There is mathematically no way to do such a projection on a flat video file.
You should try mountain the camera on the chin of the helmet. It still allows you to see the handlebars very well while now being able to see the sky much better
First time I used my Go Pro Hero 10 on a motorcycle ride it over heated and shut down then after I got it back on the battery died in 18 mins. After that I just had issues on top of issues. Never had that issue on my DJI Osmo Action 1. Im gonna get the DJI Osmo Action 3 cause it doesn’t over heat and the battery is massive.
Yes, yes, and yes! I've never been able to use the Max Lens Mod on GPH9 without it overheating either. For people that shoot 15 seconds of action at a time, or of flora in the mountains it's fine, but the additional processing generates more heat than the unit can dissipate. Too bad, the GPH11 does have some nice upgrades otherwise, like 10-bit color, but if you have requirements for the things Sur Ronster speaks to in this video, it's just not a good camera. I LOL when people toss in non sequitur objections like "it has 10-bit color!!!1111one". Yeah, that's great if this was the primary requirement for the user.
Well the Max lens mod was designed for the Hero 9 and to be compatible with later models. With this being said the Hero 11 doesn't need the Max lens mod because the camera itself essentially has a Max lens mod built into it.
You are hilarious.... Keep up the good spirit. As for the Telemetry setup for videos, I was bummed out when GoPro removed it from the desktop app. Not sure why, but it sucks to do it on the Quick App. 😭😡
This is the problem with companies just dumping a "new" product every year just for profits instead of releasing something when it's actually improved. Huge bummer to see this.
The funny part is that they think they’re making things “more accessible” lol. They want you to use the footage straight off your camera and edit it in your phone, which is fine for gramdma and gramdpa, but the other %99.999999 of us want in post work flow….
"I dont even have enough memory in my phone to take a picture of the shit i just took!!! And if i did it would look better than anything that came from the MAX LENSE MOD!!!" SUBBED...
Gopro cams are getting more buggy and repetitive every gen, I switched to insta360 a while back and never regretted, what a change...!

Max Lens mod is not for wider field. It's for GoPro 10 and makes GoPro record always horizontal video even if GoPro is upside down. GoPro 11 can't use max Lens mod because it has this mode build-in
I have a brand new go pro 11, it worked fine in the beginning but for some reason, the video footage has this "stop/continue" thing, so it freezes for a 1/10 of a second and then continues, and this happens 2/3 times a second. its all brand new, the sd card is a 256 gb samsumg evo ( so not the best, but it should be good enough), do you have any idea?
There is a way around problem with low resolition. Just put one green frame and upload this video with telemetry, video has to be exact length of original movie. Generate overlay graphics on green screen video than add it in secound line in editing video keying green color and export it in 4K :)
I hope GoPro is seeing this and listen to what have happen. do you think they are going down in quality and their R&D department is slacking or just sabotaging their product? Great Video bro! when are you coming back to the Bay area? take care and be safe!
i have the max-lence for the Hero10 i use it to counteract the croping that GoPro does in every setting exept NORMAL!!! GoPro crops automaticly. So in normal mode u get better view. So set it in normal settings without any correction or hyper this or horizon that... There is where u see the difference! AND in postproduction you use the GoPro app and the distortions get fixed.
Re: max lens. Imagine if you’re hiking, with the gopro mounted on your rucksack. There’s going to be less wobble, especially if you’re recording your hike with ‘Timelapse’ on. Nice work. I’d be wearing gloves, tho😟
the max mod is like the 360 cams. it gets rid of distortion by cropping that's why its only 2.7k. Thanks for the review I didn't know it would be that bad. I have the insta 360x3 now thinking of sending it back and getting the GoPro hero11
You should use HyperView and buy reelsteady and just turn off the stabilization to use the lens correction. Then HyperView will look better, and it will only crop just a bit.
Sorry bro, I can really feel your frustration and I respect that you demand quality for what you produce. Your not asking for much or anything at all, asking for what they took away and so many prominent creators rely on GoPro, I hope they're listening and get it fixed. Yea get your money back on that lens and they should cut you a $150 check for forcing you to buy that 3rd party app. With that said I thought the hero11 with the hyperview was some of the best motovlog footage I've seen.
Did you read the specs before you bought the lens? GoPro are pretty clear about this on the specs page. The entire purpose of the lens is to remove the distortion, and the resolution you get is the maximum possible with no distortion. No where does it say it gives you a wider field of view than HyperView.
The max lens mod honestly looks better. The cars you are passing look less crushed and much more proportional. I thought it looked like crap until you put that one.
