Right off the bat, let me say that my opinion here is not the end all. I am simply explaining why I don't like selling magazines, why others might not like it, and what you should consider before diving into them.
I'm an antique book seller and magazines just don't do it for me. They might for you!

Magazines can be annoying for sure but I've collected thousands of them just from Craigs free ads so calculate time+gas to pick them up, haul and store them. When I buy them I buy huge lots and never pay more than .25 no matter what. Sometimes sellers believe their magazines are worth more so they want $1 each but just tell them you aren't in hurry so if they don't sell (and they won't) to contact you down the road for .10 each. You are correct about the crazy amount of low ballers buying magazines but you have to understand most buyers are buying magazine back issues for nostalgia or for just 1 article or even 1 photo...I automatically decline any offer less than $5. My last thought and my biggest headache for magazine sales is USPS. Not supposed ship magazines via media mail but often mags weight too much for First Class so now your options begin to cost too much just to ship the item. Also USPS will often fold and bend magazines to fit into PO boxes so buyers who are collectors will expect much more out of your packaging which can take time and cost more money. I don't recommend anyone to enter reselling venture to start with magazines BUT if you can get them for free and take time to buy proper storage boxes, shipping supplies and have a good method of organization so you don't lose any issues then there is profit to be made often 30-50x ROi

Wow, thanks for the thorough comment! :) I couldn't agree more about what you said, and I'm all sorts of impressed with how you've got things dialed in so well! Sounds like your business model is awesome, so congrats! I'm glad you've got it figured out for magazines, I'm still trying to find my way there--the 25 cent or less rule of thumb is interesting though, definitely will be trying that out. Glad you're on board with me and the "Ugh. low balls!" struggles too! Lol Thought I might be the only one! Hahaha Again, thanks for sharing, this is sure to help a ton of people! :)

comic book type magazines are BIG MONEY in high grade. Marvel magazines, horror magazines, old pulp magazines, 1960's mags with sexy women in dangerous situations, etc.

I've seen some super big scores like that! Too many duds for me though. Hope you can find some of the really good ones though! :)

Hi, Magazines. Are NOT media mail! Anything with advertising does not qualify
@antiquebookcollective
@antiquebookcollective 2 года назад
Yep, yet another reason why I hate them. I've sent them as media mail a few times (on accident) since eBay defaulted to that though. Since learning that they can't be shipped media mail, I've grown to hate magazines even more.

Having collected and sold many magazines, I can relate to the shipping and carrying the weight. I would store my magazines in large boxes where they would weigh 50 lbs and having lifted too many in one day, I almost gave myself a hernia. Also, I was worried I was putting too much weight on the upper floor and it would collapse, so I moved many to the basement, which is bad because the humidity is much higher down there. Lots are better for buying and selling because of the shipping but you end up with many duplicates that way. You need a good way to catalog and organize.

I don't envy you! Hahaha Sounds like you've got things figured out though, so congrats there! :)

Yep! :) There are plenty of people who still make money doing magazines, but sheesh, the amount of work makes it a hard no-go for me!

I've just started experimenting with magazines in NZ- selling individually. I worked out I can offer free shipping and still make 500-600% margin. Postage here is approx 2.75 USD for up to 2 mags in a Kraft mailer. Sold my first recent issue motorcycle mag this week for a margin of 2500%. Offering free shipping becomes more cost effective the more you send, and the customer thinks they are getting a good deal although the magazine price is slightly inflated to take free shipping into consideration.

With Magazine if you don't pay really cheap for it , do not make sense to sell them on eBay.

Absolutely. A lesson I've figured out and a reason why I don't plan on doing anything else with magazines. The juice isn't worth the squeeze for me.

I was just thinking of getting rid of my own magazines but don't know if it's worth the time and effort. They are programming mags and I have old issues of National Geographic but have learned that because there are ads in the mags you can't use media mail. I never used that ebay feature before that shows sold items in a category. There does seem to be a market for my mags but I'm not sure if it's worth the time and shipping cost.

Yeah, I'm no fan of it, but there are a lot of people who do it. Several folks shared some cool info on doing it in the comments down here too. By the sound of things, I guess selling smaller lots or individual mags is supposed to be better. (Obviously shipping would be a ton easier as well! Hahaha)

I know of a lot of eBay resellers who hate selling magazines. I know of even more who hate other random items that they sell/have sold. So, what's your most hated item? Or, at the very least, what are your top ten of things you don't like selling?
@antiquebookcollective

Here's my top ten of things I don't like selling! 1. Magazines. 2. Books under $15 (I have a video coming out on that one.) 3. Antiques that have no covers. (It just makes me sad, but they're still cool and worth it!) 4. Comic books. (Same issues as magazines for me.) 5. Textbooks that aren't in use anymore but were when I picked them up. 6. Inapropro books. (I'm a Christian, so I don't like nor do I sell those.) 7. Non-book items. (Yes, I do sell them from time to time when they're worth it, but it's always such a distraction for me. I don't need any more distractions! Lol) 8. VERY damaged books. (I do it from time to time, but I don't like it. It's a lot of work and slows me down. I've got other reasons beyond that too (video coming in the future on that).) 9. Books that need repairing. (It's a time suck and, honestly, I'm not a professional repairer so I don't like thinking that I might be doing more damage than good!) 10. REALLY SMELLY BOOKS. (They make my other books smell and buyers don't like it. Also, I'm not talking old book smell, I mean all the other ones.) Alright, that list was pretty hard to come up with! Maybe you all need to challenge yourselves and make this list as well so you stop doing what you hate! It might help you and your business in the long run! (You won't get as burned out!)
