I make a case for why eurorack modules are so compelling with musical examples , not that anyone of us need any goading really.

Everything you said is 100% on point. It took me to get 2-3 skiffs deep just to start feeling it all coming together....for the varied richness I was looking for anyway. I have seen some folks open portals with 4-5 modules and it sounded beautiful. Now I find myself turning into a gear snob! Thumbing my nose at anything without patch points. My family and friends come into my studio and they basically think I'm transmitting signals to aliens.

Queen of Pentacles with a good sequencer like Winter Eloquencer and mixer for ultimate techno house dance modular rig in small setup works amazing and not that expensive. Having an all in one drum module with sequencer and mixer is all that you need for dance music. Well maybe add in a bass type oscillator/synth voice with filter and good to go!

okay... firstly... I am kind of obsessed with augmented triads--&, of course, adding 7ths, 9ths & so on.... also, I love the idea of the modular work environment offering a collaborator with a kind of mind if its own... not an additional personality, of course, but another source of ideas that spring out of & affect our ideas. I love that!!

Good advice. I’d add that starting with a semi-modular synth is a good intro and saves money. Then think about what could add to that. Maybe another VCO or a VCF. Taking it slow and thinking carefully is definitely the way to go. Having said that, I think modules such as the Distng mk4 and Maths would be useful in almost every modular setup. Thanks for the channel. Really enjoying it and learning a lot.

When you say "The skiff is so much cooler", I think you mean it's tactile! I'm a saxophonist/clarinetist firstly, and a computer musician/programmer also - since a very long time in both cases. However, I also more recently decided, "enough of computer screens to work on", everything 'is' possible (even more really), but like playing an instrument, it's not the same tactile control and completed my modular system - from stand alone pieces I already had. In my opinion, you can indeed do all this and more on a DAW/Max/Supercollider/Pure Data , etc. But working with your hands, like a conductor is way more relaxing and creative. Lastly, one should not forget that already, playing a modular system live isn't so visually interesting for the public, however, sitting behind a computer is even less so for your audience (naturally you can have animations etc, but that's another story). Thanks for your videos, always entertaining and informative.

@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE Yes, a few really important Discords popped up during the early days of lockdown. I'm a moderator for Modular Mayhem which sprung up when Colin Benders daily streams were in full on mode. I'm also an admin for Left Coast Lights which is a West Coast focused server and also EMS which is a great space for people who want to learn the streaming ropes. I started with this format of synthesis around 2016 just before it really took off and it has been a blast watching the scene develop and to explore all of the unique contributions from makers and the artists that use this stuff. An interesting aspect of the scene is the role that gear plays in getting people to interact in order to demystify some of the deeper modules and techniques as well as just beginner exploration. I see a lot of these conversations develop into full on collaboration and friendship in many cases. I don't see that in other music scenes where the gear actually drives the growth of the community and where the makers of the gear are just as much a part of it. Add quarantine to the mix and the community just exploded. Come say hi anytime, I have the same handle on discord. Cheers!

@@Alphastare23 What a fantastic community! I suspected as much. Thank you for the feedback and I will definitely say hello! My intro was a colleague who was a synth head. I was totally a in-the-box guy. I saw his OP1 and he showed me his system he was putting together on Modulargrid and I got completely hooked. But it wasn't until recently I sort of came to peace with how to make modular work for me and the things I love all the while trying to learn and absorb the format and modular concepts! I found that it's a tool and you need practice but a shared community to bounce ideas off of, which is probably even more important. This channel was just a way to put a bunch of things I love (writing, film-making, music, tech) into one sort of place.

My take with synths and modular: always record or be ready to record. Sometime magic happens and it passes quick. I’m new to synths and there’s some things that may never happen again in a patch, you think you are going to do one thing and kinda go there but also go in a totally new path. So do record.

I had not thought about this until hearing those orchestral samples. I grew up with John Williams orchestrated movies. I am very influenced by the fantastical worlds in all those movies and then add in wonderful emotional melodies and soundtracks. Fast forward decades and Im influenced by Hans Zimmer. And probably my biggest band influences are the from bands that are very cinematic and emotional. All that said, why wouldnt I want to be a conductor and create compositions like the ones that are so integral to my growing up?

Hey man, .. thanks much, for this. I'm hoping to get a Bitbox myself, soon, maybe. And then feeding it (or the other way around?) with MI Beads. I've have had Beads for awhile now, .. ooo, and would hesitate even now, to claim that I'm getting the hang of it, .. which is part of the fun, of it, not? Not completely understanding, or grasping it's sonic powers. I'm sort of convinced that taking photos, of Bead's dial arrangement, .. at least, for now, .. to assist in recreating a future session, based on a past success session, is necessary. I so agree with your real/analog instrument basis for kicking off a modded sound, in the end.
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE 2 года назад
The bitbox+beads is a pretty cool combo. Definitely for sample based modules, starting with a simple but rich acoustic source is super fun. I just scratched the surface of Beads myself but I try not to put too much pressure to get something out of it since I know it’s a good module for me. But yeah, if you’ve bought a module and it’s just not working for you, there no shame in selling it i think? Good luck with your discoveries! :)
@kenswanson1093
@kenswanson1093 2 года назад
@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE Indeed, .. there's no shame. At this point, .. I certainly don't feel like moving Beads, .. unless, I can get a super-duper replacement to Beads. The original intention was to scuff up my synthesizer sounds, with Beads .. which, it does a pretty job of that, .. plus, there seems to quite alot of opportunity with CV, too. Thanks for getting back to me.

@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE I think the "Alien" sound through that delay is somehow perfectly adding the original waveform with its echo so that one part is cancelling itself out (so you get the silence) and the other is doubling up in dynamics, and you get that jittery awesome effect. That's the best way I can explain it.

I’m going to make some people unhappy by saying this, but I have had the Morphagene for some time and cannot get what I need out of it. (Please don’t say RTFM……I understand, and I have read it). Would you recommend Arbhar or Nebulae instead of Morphagene for me? (Nothing against Make Noise of course……It’s me, not you MakeNoise)
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE 2 года назад
Haha! I hear ya. I love Make Noise and their unapologetic UX methods, but it’s a fine line between “mystery magical box” and just straight up obfuscation. Even their “font” choice I question sometimes for straight up readability on such small real estate. Morphagene, Arbhar, Nebulae, they are all essentially the same “tech” so they try to differentiate themselves - which I think IS awesome! I say for the easiest of use, Nebulae maybe the way to go. (most all of QU-BIT products are very straight forward. But sounds great! But you could also say they are the most “vanilla” and “boring”? ) Arbhar is quirky and the most “sexy” but it’s got its own issues and it’s not true stereo with setting and programmability issues. Beads could be something you could consider but it’s got it’s own issues too. /sigh Sampling time is very low - like 4 second or something with no SD card. Noise engineering has their own granular synth mod (which is on order for me and I will be reviewing it at some point) Yeah that’s the issue generally with the current state of modular products. It’s like they are all these small craft “beer” breweries trying to out do each other with weird bells and whistles that make it difficult for products that are already not the most intuitive.
@wheniwaswater-2903
@wheniwaswater-2903 2 года назад
@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE Thank you for responding. Beads is already in my rack, as well as Clouds. I didn’t like Beads initially but it has grown on me over time. Clouds is still a welcomed granular synth, it’s kind of an enigma. One of the first modules I purchased, and I still find new ways to use it regularly. I was just hoping to get more “playability” out of the samples I recorded into Morphagene. Perhaps I’m not using the right gate signals or modulation with it. Well, back to the drawing board as they say. Thanks!!

@MRTM-kl5dd
@MRTM-kl5dd 8 месяцев назад
@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE This is because the fifth degree is already occupied. What is consensus in the theory of harmony is that the I-III-V-VII degrees have priority in the definition of harmony, which, by the way, goes hand in hand with the definition of scales. The rest, the so-called "upper structure" (II, IV, VI) is optional and is defined subsequently. Since you establish or define F major as the harmony musically, the D flat is indeed a D flat and not a C sharp. However, it remains open how you construct the rest of the scale, e.g., which seventh, second. Hope it makes sense :)

In my opinion buying modules is super expensive but recreating similar things in software is not even close to the same. The work flow and stuff you come up with jamming on a modular rig is always so much more creative, usually very different then what I would put together on a computer. I just don’t see myself coming up with the stuff I do on software. Even my hardware synths like my matriarch or super 6 I come up with vastly different sounds than say serum.
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE 2 года назад
Yes! It's so odd but I've also experienced this first hand. There are many examples, but perhaps we are all a bit "burnt" out creatively starting at the computer and we need a new look. And modular workflow is so conducive for that "new look" because it's every evolving, ever changing. None of is is pre-wired so it challenges your brain the moment you sit down. It engages your hands and it's deliberately, like it forces you to slow down. Wonderful! thanks for the feedback! :)
