As someone who's been at IBM for 40 years I know that it isn't for everyone. It is especially difficult to come into the company as a new hire fresh from school. And I'd suggest paying attention to the job description of the role for which you are applying. You can use a first job as a "foot in the door", establish yourself as a high performer in whatever that role is, then start poking around for an alternative. I promise, I am not in the same job I was in when I joined in June, 1979, ;-) On the other hand, if you do a cost/benefit analysis and you feel the cost of holding the job is greater than the benefit from holding it, then yes you made the right decision.

I joined IBM 2 years ago and although I'm still very new to the company i totally agree with most of the comments raised here. Burnout culture is very real, pay is really great but you constantly work after hours and weekends.

Evolution of the jobs , in the past you get fired, now you quit your job. Internet is full of stories of the sort "Why I left Google/facebook etc". Maybe most of the people will have better working environment in a small but friendly company.

I got my first developer job back in October 2018. I left that job for 1 with the exact same pay but REALLY crappy benefits but it's %100 remote and I have more opportunity to grow as a developer plus I get to pursue other ventures.

I left IBM just for the following reason - I was on a temporary contract, and relocation of the job to Eastern Europe was announced... and I returned to my previous employer.

What were the opportunity costs you experienced? I think I heard that you had to move as one of them. I work in the federal government and willing to leave and take a pay cut to take on more technically challenging roles (transition in the works). Yes, I'm also told I'm crazy thinking about leaving a six figure job. It isn't all about money for me just need enough to pay for my house.

I don't have personal issue with IBM. I applied ibm 3 month ago.my 3 (position )applications are selected and i gave interview. It was positive. They asked me for relocation and all.After few days i asked for interview decision bz my visa will be expired. But after mail they rejected. I surprised bz 1of my frd who is not studying IT field don't have knowledge. Where i had studed and knowledge. I believe that i creak my interview but bz of visa i sent mail and nxt day morning 8 am they rejected. I don't understand their attitude. Same thing happened with my frd just 1week ago .He mailed and as i told u he is not it guy.but he get job and I rejected. Why? Is it resizum?

I work in IBM since April 2008. I even play a very important role in the company. Everyone who works in IBM can surely confirm how IBM can give you the best work-life balance and how important it is when you have a family with 3 childs. @@albertB215 due to the inadequacy of the Italian government, most the companies, IBM included, are dolocalizing services and production to east Europe, where they can find a better tax policy and a smarter, lighter bureaucratic obligations. What is left in Italy is just a state of uncertainty and increasing unemployment rate

I admire anyone who puts themselves out there...however your video was more about promoting a product than anything to do with why you left IBM. Unfortunately, the two reasons you gave didn't really stack up. If you said to me you left IBM to explore new opportunities and become a entrepreneur that would have made more sense than to denigrate IBM as this behemoth. Here is some free advise...you drive your own career...whether inside a Corp or outside...its that simple. Good Luck with you future endevours!!

70% of people at IBM are barely qualified to operate a vacuum cleaner or an airline push cart. If you want to be successful at this company you either must be a brown nosed sycophant or be determined to develop hard skills (on your own time). MVS, DB2, IMS or CICS, MQ, Web, at least one, otherwise you might as well be illiterate and will become miserable at IBM unless you find a manager that likes your nose up their ass and shit in your mouth. IBM will not do anything to develop your skills. This sucks, but that’s the way it is. With a good skillset, there are great opportunities at the company.

Reminds me of an old saying, "Morality is a luxury for the well fed." That being established, glad you've decided to do your own thing - IBM will survive comfortably with or without you - we're all cogs, either in our own endeavors, or for "the man", either or, it's all good. My bro decided to quit the world 8 years ago and has been homeless in SF since - his choice, like yours, it won't make any difference, but unto you. Note: once you get a wife and kids, you would be forced to grind yourself for IBM as you couldn't be thinking for yourself anymore, so remember MGTOW - live free, think free, be free.
