As a dude that only wants to provide for his family in a terrible position I truly envy you John. I really want to get into coding I’m currently enrolled in classes and I’m nervous. I always hear how intense it can be but the field is something I truly feel I would be happy in but I’m sure it has its fair share of ups and downs. I’m so tired of delivering boxes to people’s front doors John. But dude from the bottom of my heart congrats dude I know it wasn’t easy getting to where you’re at and mad props.
Hey man! You got this. Anything you want to achieve in life you can get. Surround yourself with people who you look up to and work hard. You’ll get there in no time!
We’ll be monitoring and responding to comments closely the first 24 ish hours of posting this video, soooo drop a comment! Happy to answer any questions-interview, recruiting, coding, marriage, life, Twitter, Robinhood etc. Q&A is open!
Found your channel with the 'Day in the Life' video, so I clicked as soon as I got the notification. Congratulations on the dream job, and all the best! :) PS, Theyhadusinthefirsthalf.jpeg
All the best to both of yall! Visited Stanford Uni and Palo Alto in December, amazing area for sure. Also changing companies is definitely a good call if you’re passionate about it and there’s a good opportunity! Will probably also switch jobs now and be part of something amazing
Great video; really well-explained. Sounds like a great move for Josh! Is Katie working remotely or switching jobs? I'd love to hear more iOS discussion: - What is Josh's opinion on specialization, particularly for iOS? In other words, "tying your career to Apple"? - What does Josh recommend for iOS learning progression? Swift & SwiftUI are the future of iOS, but most established companies still have lots of Objective-C. - What additional skills does Josh use frequently beyond iOS development? Any backend development, scripting, or DevOps?
Hey 👋 Katie is going to work remote for the next few months. And she’ll be able to commute up to the city pretty easily once offices open back up. Specialization: I don’t think tying your career to Apple is bad at all. There’s so much more money in iOS apps compared to Android or web (at least on platforms that span all three ecosystems like Twitter or Robinhood), and it’s not that hard to learn new frameworks if Apple’s goes extinct. I think every dev should know the basics for every platform, and then pick one to really specialize in. It’s good to be like “entry level” in several platforms and then really specialize in one. And it only takes a weekend of making random personal projects to learn a whole new platform enough to be “entry level” Progression: Swift is definitely the future. Kind of a dead end to only know Objective-C. Buuut you’re right, Objective-C is still important in big established apps. The best devs right now are really good at porting Obj-C to Swift and working in both systems. But it’s a long transition. Don’t code your personal projects in Obj-C, you can learn it once you need to port stuff over for a big company. Any company that uses one will hire ppl that work in the other. Skills: tons of Python scripting. You use it a lot at big companies to run the build & CI systems and random analytics type stuff. I use a lot of Bash too, but it’s mostly just looking up every command in Stack Overflow 😂. I know enough backend dev to be able to build my own node servers for my personal projects that I can throw on AWS EC2 instances. I don’t really know SQL directly, just know how to use Sequelize ORM in JavaScript and I know how to spin up my own db instances. I did lots of DevOps work at Twitter trying to get XCode to build faster and making python scripts that help with CI. Most front end devs are involved in DevOps! Honestly you can do anything as long as you know how to use Stack Overflow 😅 Hope that helps!
Randomly ran into this video, and I just realized I had a meeting with you a few quarters ago on iOS deeplink issues. Congrats, and good luck on your switch!
The minute you said "hyper-growth" and "pre-IPO", I was like Robinhood? And then drum roll please... ROBINHOOD! Congrats and just wanted to say I love this channel and the advice y'all give is the best I've seen!! Have you both thought about making a video about new grad advice for applying to jobs during COVID-19? Because that would be great!!
Hey thanks so much! Yeah that would be tough to be graduating right now with Covid 19. I would say to try and do tons of personal projects and leetcode. Most interviews are 100% remote right now so you don't need to be as good at writing on a whiteboard, which is nice. Just do like 2 leetcodes a day for 2 months straight and you'll be able to work almost anywhere! Good luck!
Loved this video! Very impressive background and completely relate to how you left Twitter when I left IBM. I'm a huge fan of Robinhood and can imagine it being full of fun & exciting problems to solve. Wishing you & Katie the best with the new position!
Congrats for the new job at Robinhood! We know how big Twitter is and you answer all my curiosity already. Thanks Katie and Josh, always support your channel.
Hey Josh! My name is Luqman and I’m a high school senior in Utah wanting some advice. I’m planning on applying to colleges in California and majoring in Computer Science and will hopefully land some kind of Software Engineering job in a big company. I’ve done one programming internship and Northrop Grumman and multiple coding clubs/boot camps. I’m wanting to do a science project on programming of some sort and I know you’ve done a project on Python Scripting. I was wondering if we could schedule a time on where I could ask you some questions on the project and how I could move forward on doing a similar project; Also some questions on the internships you’ve done in and out of college. Anyways, congratulations on the Robinhood offer! I’m excited to see what great things you’ll do there 🎉🎊
Hey, congrats on your offer:) I have one question: I got an offer as junior dev at Mercedes Benz RDNA in Sunnyvale, what do you guys think about this company? I am a little concerned because it's not a traditional tech company, so yeah, I do not know if I should make that decision and move from Germany to Sunnyvale:D it would be my first job after my bachelor's
Mercedes would be awesome! It’s great to just get out here in a role you are excited about. It is really easy to switch around once you have a role. Any discounts on the G Wagon? 😂
Yes I did first know you from that "a day in a life" video and now, seeing this, I just subscribed! Gonna be an amazing journey for you and I will be keeping an eye! Or two!
Robinhood.. Noice! I wish you well moving into Silicon Valley! I hope to meet you guys someday! Thanks a lot for being transparent & honest, it helps a lot!
Me:Starts watching the video with day in the life of a twitter engineer and again me:ends watching the video with why i left my job at twitter RU-vid:what happens to you Me:it drives me crazy 😃😃 Edit:sorry forgot to say congratulations 🥳
Another awesome video, can’t wait to follow you guys on your new journey! All the best on your new job Josh! I’m waiting for Robinhood to come to the UK 👍
So glad to hear this news. I'm very happy you got a job at a place you are invested in (Pun intended)! Also, you got me good with the fake out intro, I gasped a bit. Good one though. I am looking forward to what comes next from you folks.
Congratulations ! I'm happy to see you keep moving and try new things. Enjoy your first days at Robinhood. Look forward to see your next adventures ! See ya. From France, tech journalist ;)
Robinhood owes me like $2k. I bought some way otm tesla calls expiring in like a week for like $50 for shits and giggles but I still placed a sell order after hours and it was set to be executed the following day. The next day comes and tesla is blowing up pre-market and when the markets opened robinhood executed the sell from yesterday’s price. Even though it said that the sell price would be executed at the best possible price AND my screen showed the profit but then it started glitching out and ultimately showed what robinhood really did and had 0 profit. Got cheated out of +$2k. That happened back in jan-feb. I have reached out to RB like 4 times but my emails go unanswered. Can you help me???
Interesting! We live in San Jose and I got "pulled" in because of your budget/spending video! Look forward to seeing more videos from you guys! Good luck at Robinhood and the move down!
@@JoshandKatie sir means in general I have an interest in IOS development but I asked my seniors in college they said that the salary packages of iOS development are quite less and sir is iOS development a dying career choice? Thanks
good luck with everything. I don't work in software (yet), but I'd like to end up at twitter one day. landing those types of roles is tough as a self-taught programmer though!
Great video, two questions if you have time 1. How long is the notice period 2. How do you guys do project hand-off (knowledge transfer) to your replacement in Twitter
There is no notice period. But people usually give 2-3 week notice. You don’t want to leave on bad terms! And yes we do knowledge transfer handoffs. That’s the most important and time consuming part of the last few weeks of a job like Twitter.
Josh... Hearty Congratulations on joining Robinhood... If possible could you please create a video on careers in iOS, Tips on how to get started with iOS application development.
Awesome job on the Robinhood offer!!! I was just convincing my boyfriend to apply for a role there as well since we live 5 mins away from their Menlo Park office LMAO. I hope to see you in the area soon!!
Very happy to know about you getting your dream job , best of luck , and hope so you will go through many different experiences in robinhood .......ofcourse before leaving it like Twitter 😋😋😋
Hey guys! Great video. I'm working as a software engineer intern currently, and I'd love for Josh to drop some knowledge on us regarding how he went about the job switch. When did he start looking? Was he actively preparing for interviews while working, and if so, what were the best strategies? Negotiation breakdown? Factors that went into accepting the offer? Things like that. Anyways, best of luck on the new gig, keep us updated!
Hey! Thank you! I started interviewing at Robinhood back in February when one of their recruiters reached out. I didn’t apply or interview anywhere else- genuinely liked Twitter and only 2-3 places I’d work over it-Robinhood just happened to be one of them! I did interview while being employed but all of my interviews were remote due to coronavirus, so super easy to schedule. Robinhood made it easy on me as they came in higher than my Twitter Salary right off the bat. I did negotiate with them and ended up getting a higher signing bonus, stock package, and slight salary bump from their first offer. Always always negotiate- even if you’re happy with the original figures.
As far as prepping- Tons of LeetCode! Maybe 40 LeetCode questions over the span of a month. Plus reading tons of style guides, watching RU-vid videos on the types of interviews, programming tutorials to learn more UIKit stuff, and sample projects. There were ~8 interviews because I interviewed for both iOS and web so I had to know my stuff!!
