I would say this after I'm living in the US for 42 years, Cambodia is much safer as far as the gun violence deaths. My first return trip was back in 1995 trying to find my surviving family members. The country was still in total ruins then and it was officially ended the prolonged civil war in 1998. Can't compare Cambodia to it's neighbors as the Khmer Rouge had destroyed all country's infrastructures and human resources. Cambodia has lost a whole generation. Cambodia is like a new kid in the block and still has a long way to go slowly but surely. Poor leadership leads to war, suffering, and dead. Good leadership leads to prosperity and happiness. A genocide survivor under Khmer Rouge era!
As a vietnamese, I don't like the fact you said "even though they are not as smart as vietnamese". I mean each people had different situation and adversity, I don't think it's right to jump to conclusion like this.
I just came back from Vietnam and Cambodia and I definitely think Cambodia needs more help. It was very sad how desperate people were to sale things and make a living. I went to Siem Reap. Such a beautiful country but they deserve help as well.
We love u Cambodia and Vietnam from USA I work at a candy manufacturing company in USA called American licorice and we donated backpacks full of school supplies for back to school I hope we get to help u more after all your candy company works with our company Cambodia is suffering very badly
You talk about life expectancy in Vietnam and China. We clashed in the past of language learning and you thaught Chinese is a better language to learn for chau ahn. I thaught English was better. The life expectancy is much higher in UK for poor people they are all treated well sometimes foreigners better than British people. If chau ahn went to China she’s another poor girl. In UK she’s a person who is able to grow to be more than a poor girl. So this comment is nothing to do with the video but you actually made my point in English or Chinese language.
English language is superior not just in the world, but for tourism jobs. Chau Ahn could work in a shop, hotel, or tours with foreign clientele. There are Chinese tourists too, but they come in their own tour groups and are herded into Chinese hotels, shops, restaurants.
I'm Vietnamese, so, of course I'm bias, and Vietnam is always #1. But I think it would be beneficial to create a Southeast Asian block similar to EU, going beyond what ASEAN is doing right now. Fast trains, open borders, free trades, things of that sort.
The US bombed the jungle of northern Cambodia where the Viet Kong and Khmer Rouge had jungle camps. North Vietnam and China were the primary backers of the Khmer Rouge. Even if the US had not bombed the jungles of Cambodia, it would not have changed the fate of Cambodia being taken over by the Khmer Rouge. They simply weren't prepared for a well-funded, well-armed communist onslaught. While I'm no fan of US military adventurism, they did confront communist/Soviet/Chinese military adventurism head-on. They were 90% of the allied troops in Korea and had partial success there and it looked like they were going to have partial success in Vietnam too, with talks of negotiating a North and South Vietnam scheduled with the Viet Kong prior to the Tet offensive.
US and RVN overthrew the Kingdom in 1970 to 1975 to set up a puppet government (similar to RVN itself.) They also tried in Laos but failed, thankfully. So really the "democratic" coaltion are to blame for the rise in popularity of the Khmer Rouge in the early 70s, since the puppet Republic was awful for everyone. Plus after 1979, the US, China, and most of the "free world" recognized the Khmer Rouge-led coalition as the "real" Cambodia throughout the 80s and early 90s. So it's not as black and white as you make it seem.
@@uncleho1945 the NVA and China support Pol Pot already in the 1960s. Its inevitable that cpk would take over cambodia by force after the america left SEA. Communist vietnam only regret this once Pol Pot start losing trust with vietnamese communist and started killing them. After the Vietnam war, China is still in support of Pol Pot and the Kmer Rouge and that is why China war with Vietnam. It's not black and white because Communist Vietnam always try to twist the truth. US only agree with China because they want to keep relationship with China and they don't really care after their withdrawal crom SEA which is typical in politics and which is the same reason why they didn't listen to your uncle immature request against the French. The French who was a super power.
@@uncleho1945 Yeah, I'm not saying the US got it right in Vietnam. I'm saying they were there playing defense, as was the case in Korea, responding to offense backed by China and to a lesser extent, the Soviets. Sure RVN was a puppet government but were the Viet Kong and Khmer Rouge legitimate governments themselves? No. They were China's puppets. As far as recognizing a government goes, that happens all the time and is just acceptance of reality and not a endorsement of a government. As far as Laos goes, it's telling that you think their communist government which has kept almost all Laotians in extreme poverty (except for top government officials of course), was somehow a better outcome than a puppet democracy potentially succeeding. Some say Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan were also puppet democracies and they have done far better than their communist counterparts in the region. It's also a little disingenuous to paint with a broad brush and call the people in a county who want democracy instead of communism puppets of the democracy-pushing USA.
I think traveling mark had a bad experience and is simply whinning about. I've never been to Cambodia but I've been living in Lao almost a year now and the only dangerous things around here are the insects.
I've been to lots of countries. In the big cities you have lots of people. That many people in one place and you'll get some that aren't great. I've found people in the countryside to be much better. Get out of the big city is my advice. I've had the greatest time visiting the countryside. I liked the Cambodia trip. I thought it was great. Mostly giving stuff to the kids which is always my favorite thing to watch.
I think you hit the nail on the head in your assessment of Cambodia. I was there some 10 years ago and there was an underlying feeling of desperation. However, I only went to Siem Reap, so that may be ignorance on my part. I certainly would return to Cambodia when I eventually move to SE Asia. The heat idex was off the charts....I felt like I was being microwaved daily. I don't like to use broad strokes to describe nationalities but that was my general feeling at the time I went and area.
@@wetluv4 funny you mention that 😁...the last time I was in Thailand was April as well and seriously it was so hot the glue melted on my sneakers. But, I put a towel or shirt over my head when in Cambodia it was so hot...so I'm gonna say Cambodia was still hotter than Thailand in April but it was close.
@@keithd1219 I took 3 showers a day and changed clothes each time. Just to walk outside my hotel and burst into flames again! 🔥 I remember walking out my hotel at 10am one morning. 10 minutes down beach road I met a beautiful young woman wanting to cone back to my hotel. She had just got into town. I was sweating so bad I just turned around and went back to my hotel alone. I wasn't exactly in the mood. That was a sad day. I still kick myself in the butt each time I think of her.
Thanks Troy I start watching you because the Chopper rides around the countryside but stay because of the People. Would like to visit all. Thanks Again A+++++++++++++
I’m a Vietnamese American. I traveled to China on business trips on a number of occasions before Covid I often stopped by my hometown, Saigon, but never visited Phnom Penh due to a number of reasons: 1. I noticed that the Khmers always had riots claiming that South Vietnam is their land. I laughed discretely thinking that my ancestors lost so much blood defending this land. Where were the Khmers then? The Khmers claim that South Vietnam belongs to them. It might have been in ancient time but for the last 1000 years the Vietnamese have lived there and developed South Vietnam. My ancestors lived and buried there. All Vietnamese considered S. Vietnam including Phu Quoc Island is half of their country, no dispute. 2. The thinking of traveling throughout the empty Cambodian streets at night scare the … out of me. I thought about the stories that my cousin who fought a war against the Khmer Rouge in trying to free the Khmers from extermination by their own people, the Khmer Rouge. The killing fields, the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge to their own people. the remnants of human remains there…etc. one day I will visit this war torn country and hope to change my opinion.
The genesis would have been the communists invading South Vietnam which precipitated the US entering the war to defend their South Vietnamese allies....no? And, of course the communists invading Cambodia to move troops South, which obviously needed to be countered by the US. Your knowledge of history is rather limited, especially considering you talk about that war so often.
The way you feel about contributing to the community in Cambodia is the same I feel about Vietnam. When I visit Vietnam in January everyone was so nice to me, everyone seemed geniuenly interested of trivial things like where I'm from, whats it like there etc. Meanwhile in my home country strangers don't talk on the streets or cafes... Its really sad and a reason I kind of socially isolate a lot, while when I'm in Vietnam I'm very social. Currently studying the vietnamese language so I can talk to the older generation vietnamese that don't know english
The bad stories are probably from people who prefer to drink and the bar scene. If you drink and go to bars in Thailand, its a lot safer than in Cambodia. If you are the type to seeks that type of entertainment, its definitely safer in Thailand or Vietnam as compared to Cambodia.
I went to Cambodia in 2000. I needed to understand what happened there. I was the only 6ft tall, blond man in country. Something to remember- Cambodia is a fertile spot that's coveted by all its neighbors - Vietnam, Thailand, China and Myanmar. All want to own that place and it's resources (Mekong River). It's been that way for ever. Right now China is paying for a multi billion dollar civilian Airport in Phnom Phen (sp?) Why? Did you in your travels see any immediate need for that over helping the people recover from their tragedy?

Oh ,one more. You know that Vietnam came from the China region called yuenam back in the days...and do notice that Vietnamese, Chinese,Korean names always have 3 syllables?are they related???wot?sadly
what did you mean in 0:55 when you said the cambodians are not as smart as vietnamese ? im genuinely asking. Is it their lack of an education system you were referring to or just the people ?
Cambodia currently has serous issues with human trafficking and the Cambodian government is quite incompetent doing nothing to help solve the problems. Even the US government don't recommend traveling to Cambodia.
No, incorrect. Here are the US State Dept travel advisories, you could easily google. Maybe you were thinking about France, Mexico, Burma, Philippines. They all have far worse warnings! Travel Advisory for Cambodia: "Exercise normal precautions in Cambodia. Some areas have increased risks." 1. Phnom Penh: "Street crime, particularly phone and bag snatchings, occurs frequently in areas where foreigners gather; resistance can result in injury. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and to be extra vigilant when displaying items like jewelry, bags and cell phones in public. Violent crime, such as sexual assault and homicide, is common, sometimes against foreigners." 2. Landmines persist in very remote areas. Travel Advisory for Vietnam: "Exercise normal precautions in Vietnam."

@@louisalong7019 Sad about how the Cambodian government sold out to China, and what they have done to Sihanoukville. Made the politicians rich I am sure. Slavery conditions are not new, must be lots of Chinese gangsters now. But I don't think these things make Cambodia dangerous for tourists. The State Dept would certainly mention tourist kidnapping if that was happening, like in Mexico. Cambodia needs tourists! Tourists bring much needed income for hotels, restaurants, tour companies, street vendors, taxis, shop owners, and the thousands of people employed by them. I think I will visit later this year, now that I think about it!
Troy this vid was great I learnt a bit about the history of what caused cambodia to be where it is now, I could say Fu cing americans, I dont blame the americans, to be honest I think they have no idea of what happened, it only posts like your can we learn from, keep up the good work, I surport an orphanage on the thai burma boarder and my work is very simular hope we can meet up one day, in asia or aus Take care Johnny
