Why I Listen to Vinyl Records Instead of Streaming Music as a Minimalist

I never thought I'd become the vinyl guy. It's expensive, impractical, fragile, requires lots of space, and extremely not minimalist on the surface. But after listening almost exclusively to vinyl records for the past three months and ditching my Spotify subscription, for what vinyl records lack in convenience, they more than make up for in quality. I no longer stream music, and I don't miss it at all. Here's why I listen to vinyl records instead of streaming music as a minimalist.
My turntable (not sponsored, I just like it):

My speakers:

My amp (not necessary with my setup, I just use it for headphones):

I never had spotify or any streaming subscription, been playing vinyl and cassette tapes since the 70’s together with cds since the 90’s and haven’t stopped ever since :)

I am also FLOORED that your mom knew who DGD was. We have the same taste in music! Great vinyls, I’d buy a lot of the same ones for sure.

Agreed. I'm not on board because I've started and had to leave or sell my vinyl collection several times over so, if you can, go for it.

I wouldn't discount streaming completely as there are some artists that only have the means to upload digitally, youtube has thrown some gems my way, but I agree with most of what you said here. Spotify's algorithm has gotten worse for me discovering new music every year. The music taking up limited physical space in my home also forces me to be more intentional and consider what's worth keeping or passing along. Glad I found your new channel and hope to see you link up with PLP for more podcasts/streams again!

Many moons ago, my cousin and I had memberships to RCA and Columbia record clubs. I was grabbing 5-10 vinyl records a month for years. They were all played once. I would play them once and record them onto a Maxell UR-90 tape (because it made them portable and I could get 2 albums on a tape). I have been hauling those records and the corresponding tapes around for a long time. Then one day I sat down and realized that my taste in music was absolutely horrible back in the day. It was mostly 80's hair bands. When my son got into vinyl, I gave him my whole collection because I didn't even have a record player and I'm in the streaming boat now. The point of all this is if you are going to get into collecting anything, make sure you are grabbing something that's actual quality. Also, getting into streaming has actually helped me to expand my horizons on musical artists that I would have never listened to without it. I actually take the time to rate my music and once a month go into my streaming services "recommended music" category and listen for new songs. If I find a song I like, I'll go back and listen to more of that artist's catalog and see if there's other music I might like. I love firing up my playlist now and having people look at me and ask "what the f**k are you listening to?" when they have been listening to whatever the local music station pumps out, which is usually the same music rotated every 4 hours.

If you wanna go for vinyl...take the speakers AWAY from the turntable...your sound will improve with less vibration.

I recently got my vinyl set up, and it's kind of nice to just set aside 30 minutes a day, or more on the weekends, to commit to just spinning a couple of vinyls, and forgetting about everything else. Edit - I got to party with Dance Gavin Dance here in Texas once, and can't wait for some of their vinyls to arrive soon!

Just make sure you don’t leave your records on the turntable when you go out and then the sun creeps in through the window and warps them, like it did to me a few times during the 70s-80’s😢😢

Bro the cowboy bebop and my chemical romance vinyl records are good choices especially the art and lyrics that are in them.

I find new music on Spotify. If I find something I really like, I purchase it on vinyl.

Also, if you've ever seen a video of people playing music for cows, they have the same kind of mentality and reverence about music: they stop everything they are doing, and pay full attention to the otherworldly sounds.
