Marcy Wu quickly became one of my favorite female characters. She was at her best when she was trying to connect with the citizens of Wartwood. It was a joy to watch.
I would describe Amphibia as a snowball. It starts off small, but as it keeps rolling, it gets bigger, bolder, and better, until you have this massive, magnificent ball of snow. By the end, it’s one of the greatest cartoons I’ve ever watched. Bravo, writing team! Never stop doing what you’re doing! Edit; I come back here 3 months later only to find out I this got over a thousand likes. The internet is a wild place, huh? Anyway, fixed a typo. Also, try to be nice to each other and respect each other’s opinions. Let’s keep things civil, shall we?
@@boio3133 I’ll tell you what it means. It means that it ironically lost its momentum and spark. It stopped being interesting and derailed into a predictable and lackluster story that chooses shock value and contrived asspulls rather than faster paced and consistent story telling. Opting to flesh out unnecessary aspects rather than doubling down on its good ones. What you’re left with is Season 3.
@@infinityheart_tm9270 I’m mostly upset with how the ending happened, I get the theme of accepting change, but forcing the girls to leave right away because the multiversal god decided the gems **needed a time limit** left us with a little bit of time to say goodbye and go, no final days in amphibia or anything, they had to go, or stay. Furthermore, the characters I think just lost actual brain function when fighting the core moon, Marcy is a nerd and would absolutely try and aim for the thrusters or whatever, but we needed X Y and Z to happen, so we don’t get that either
Andrias is probably my favorite example of voice acting. When he saw the letter from Leif and broke down, I could just hear the regret and anger at himself through his words. Keith David did an amazing job. Definitely my favorite Disney villain.
@@ultimatepotato713 I think they're trying to say that stating that he is a cheat code is a backhanded compliment. It compliments Keith David while back handing the writing and downplaying its involvement. I understand what you meant but you have to see how it came off too.
agreed i only rly liked olivia and yunan in 3a wish they showed anne grieving over marcy more, luckily they did in marcys journal but it would’ve been better in the show
Season 3 A is kinda why I'm secretly happy The Owl House wasn't allowed more episodes in the final season. Luz teaching her friends about the human world for 12 episodes despite everything going on in the Boiling Isles would be very jarring.
One thing I like about Season 1 that you mentioned in the video, that even though some episodes feel filler-y, no episode really is. A lot of the episodes establish important things and I especially love how Anne wasn’t just able to fight from the beginning, the reason she was able to hold up against Sasha is because of that one episode where she got taught in that day care, and that episode didn’t really move the main plot forward iirc. Matt Braly really was right.
The ending was my favorite part, but I felt the rest of the series was a bit weaker than Gravity Falls or TOH. There are certain things it does better, like Marcy deciding to leave her fantasy on her own. Just wish her fantasy wasn't a Jerry Simulation and the realization of "this fantasy is kind of lame" was slower. I would've cried hard if it was as strong as those two shows and had the same ending.
I got into Amphibia much later into the run (season 2 as it was almost over), but I absolutely adored it. I still prefer Owl House in retrospect (not to pit the two against each other it’s more just my own personal tastes), but Amphibia was something truly special too me. I connected with Anne in a way I haven’t much with other characters outside of Amity Blight before her. I won’t get too personal but let’s just say her journey of self love touched me so deeply and personally. And just watching the series finale as it aired was something magical I hope to never forget. I’m gonna miss this flawed but wonderful show that meant a lot to me and managed to stick the landing so beautifully.
Owl house has the better story and amphibia has the best characters but oh my God the characters so so dang good that it makes me injoy it better than owl house
I love Owl House for it’s story and good characters but I also Adore Amphibia for it’s fun interesting world, Story that turns epic with some dark twists. And it’s Characters OMG the characters are definitely what drove me to watch it to the bitter end.
@iHunt mf I did watch Gravity falls lol the guy who made Amphibia was on Gravity Falls that's how I found out about it. And yes Gravity falls season 2 is great but season 1 is kinda meh.
Amphibia, when it comes to quality, can be pretty inconsistent. But when it has it's highs, damn, are they high. Despite originally binging the show in 2-3 days I grew attached to the characters like in no other cartoon. It will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you for the retrospective.
Honestly even though that The Owl House exists, Amphibia is my favourite disney show and a show in general. The girls were excellent, Anne was a marbelous protagonist, Sasha's redemption was top nuch, Marcy and Hunter still didn't get a therapy what the fuck- the episodes were enjoyable at the most part, Andrias is one of the best characters I have ever seen and he is way too misunderstood in my opinion. Also how come All In and The Hardest Thing don't have any warnings but True Colors does- like- someone literally got disarmed Disney what the hell-
@@sethsheridan3488 Well, true he did almost kill a child (not even one) but theres just this little thing no one notices in the core and the King. Darcy was in the middle of a memory wipe, so naturally, Marcy would forget everything, but she didn't. Before the memory wipe completed Andrias pulled the switch. Or I'm just dumb and he was suposed to do I dunno 💀 As for being excused too much, yeah bringing killer frog bots to earth just to kill one a 13 year old is very fucked up, his actions were in fact evil because he had no problem with throwing a 10 year old out of a flying castle, stabbing Marcy, destroying Wartwood etc. However, like you said, daddy issues, it may not excuse all of Andrias's actions, but atleast it kinda does. His father was manipulative to him since day 1, and all Andrias ever wanted was for all of this to finally end. In episodes like Olivia and Yunan or All In (during Marcy's possesion and the scene after Marcy and Andrias's first meeting), it was shown and even said that he does care and did care for Marcy since day one. Also about the hate- how come you never saw him get hate- ever since true colors the hate was pretty huge-
All In and True Colors had some scary and violent things happen in them, but they were not the final scenes that would make the story extra scary when it is almost over and they shock us at the last minute.
Yeah Amphibia is the unexpected gem that I just grew OBSESSED WITH and consumed my brain, even now after watching it’s ending that made me cry I can’t get enough of this amazing Cartoon! Yes it’s had it fair share of flaws, and several episodes that I find boring or even skippable, especially around Season 3 and it feels like two different types of shows, specifically Big City Greens or Gravity Falls and doesn’t really know it’s own identity but it’s still a truly great show, warts and all. While Luz is one of my favorite protagonists Anne Boonchuy definitely wins as one of the most human protagonists Disney has ever produced. In my opinion I found something I could relate upon myself from the girls. Anne I could certainly relate to her journey of self love and confidence, and Marcy was like looking in a mirror of myself (albeit more energetic mirror) but a mirror character of myself nonetheless. Even Sasha has enthralled me the most with her journey of slowly learning she’s been a control freak to her friends. Amphibia has been one of the few shows that genuinely got into my brain deep that I will never forget. From Danganronpa (Visual Novels) to Helluva Boss, Owl House and now Amphibia. Also Polyamory Sapphics.
This show started from the bottom, but overtime after the season 1 finale and with seasons 2 and 3, this will forever main in my heart as one of my all time favorite Disney animated show.
Definitely my favorite Disney show of all time. Amphibia and owl house had something special that put them on par with gravity falls and the other greats. It’s a shame we probably won’t get anything close to these masterpieces in the future *coughdisneyidiotscough*
I watched the first five minutes of this review as someone who has never seen Amphibia before. But this single handedly decided to make me watch it. I'll be sure to return to the full video once I have completed it 👌
First Schaffrillas now you have your retrospective take with this hoppity fun time of a frog show! Nice to have you back in the swing of things with lengthy yet passionate vids like these! Despite some slow moments (and some of the crew's questionable actions, not Matt himself thankfully), it was an overall tremendously charming, funny and even heartfelt series that carried on the legacy of former Gravity Falls crew members pretty well, just like The Owl House (another show that money hungry Disney execs sadly gave the axe, knowing that it was popular, yet "didn't fit their brand."
I enjoyed the entire series of Amphibia from start to finish. I enjoyed all of the seasons, even though some episodes and seasons were better than others. I loved the calamity trio and their relationships with their Amphibia counterparts; Anne Boonchuy with the Plantar family, Sasha Waybright with Grime, and Marcy Wu with Andrias, Olivia, and Yunan. I honestly believe that Sasha is my favorite of the calamity trio, even though I love Anne and Marcy. For all of the problems that their friendship had, Anne, Sasha, and Marcy still cared about each other, and ultimately their friendship is in a better place than it was at the start of the series, in spite of the changes in their lives leading them in different directions. I also like how Amphibia leads to the possibility of a Disney multiverse with Owl house and gravity falls possibly being in the same universe as Amphibia.
Yes he did. And personally Sasha Elizabeth Waybright is my favorite character in the series second to Marcy Wu, Anne’s great as well but the other two girls just have more interesting stories that I wanted to see explored more especially Marcy
I adore the outro, when watching the first episode I wasn't so sure about the series, didn't feel right but goddamn when those chill vibes hit, I got hooked. Somehow they perfectly captured the feeling I search for in the media I consume, foreign yet so familiar. A casual adventure, as contraintuitive as that sounds. Of course, when Marcy showed up, that was just cheating, how could I not love a fellow ND dumbass?
You wanna know what sold me on Amphibia? The roommates episode. Most of it was a pretty standard "main characters become roommates and they don't click!". But the morale.... I was ready for Hop Pop to tell them "yeah, maybe you aren't as good friends as you thought, but there are other things that make great friends!". Did he do that? NOPE! He said thet they're just different, they have different needs and things that make them comfortable in a safe space that your room should be and that doesn't jeopardize their friendship. It's such a small thing, yet for me it was MASSIVE. It made me stop in my tracks and realize that the show I was watching was treating their characters with love and emotional intelligence and I was not dissapointed. It became my favourite show and second piece of media that touched me so deeply that I've decided to have a tatoo from it :D
Very well made retrospective, and one that gave me more perspective around some criticisms that I previously kinda brushed off. I still don't necessarily agree with all of them, like - and please pardon me if I'm misinterpreting your position - I personally believe the moral-based nature of season 1, while it can indeed get a little heavy-handed, is kinda part of the point given that its main priority is Anne developing as a person so it was a bit of a necessary evil to some degree. And, to get somewhat more controversial, I don't think the 11-minute runtime is a disadvantage even as late as season 3 because it means the show is constantly on the move and makes the longer stories we do get feel more special and significant. That said, every bit of praise you gave the show was incredibly well deserved and the fact this all came from a place of passion is something that always hits hard for me. Great going!
Me personally, amphibia is THE BEST Disney animated show I've seen. Gravity falls is good but this show just hits different for me. For one thing I heavily underestimated it from the jump and when I finally watched it, and got to true colors, I was shocked at what this frog show was capable of and. And for another it's themes of change and personal are something kids and adults NEED to hear especially young adults like myself in this transition from high school to the real world. Props to you Matt and your crew for pulling a show like this off.
This was an astounding retrospective of Amphibia, and thank you so much for doing it. While there was some points I would have expanded on, I think this is a fantastic overview of what makes the show truly special. It has become one of my all time favorite shows even with most of the same negatives you had on it. This funny frog show has changed me and many others for the better, and I am so amazed at what Matt and the crew were able to pull off in all the difficulties they faced with the network. P.S. the plantar family dynamic was amazing and makes S1 so much better on rewatch for me
Amphibia is one of my favorite shows it's like a snowball slow start but gets great over time and the ending is just perfect the show deserved the love that it gets
I’ll admit when I first watched Amphibia I was kinda bored. The first season wasn’t bad but some of the episodes were a hit or miss (IMO) but season 2 caught my interest and I kept watching all the way to the season finale True Colors. I’ll never forget my first time watching that episode it was so good. It’s still one of my favorite finales of the show. And then season three had some episodes were it felt like a drag but were good nonetheless and the final episode ever made me bawl my eyes out. The last time I ever cried at a cartoon finale was Gravity Falls and Ok K.O Let’s Be Heroes so it’s been a while since I did.
Amphibia: “What if… they all said goodbye… and moved on with just the memory of their adventures and the people they grew to love. 🤨” Star vs: “NaH, iT’Ll bE FiNE, LOL!!!😂”
I didn't hate the ending of star vs, I just think it fumbled a lot of plot points and made the ending worse over all. But yeah, deleting all magic from the known universe, and effectively killing all creatures that were made of magic was fine but not letting go of your short lived crush was hard. And I get cleave can mean the opposite of what we think it means but I just kinda hasvto suspend my belief because I was emotionally invested.
Star vs. is the poster child of "fanfic can do better than canon" and nowhere is that more obvious than Queens of Mewni after season 3 fumbled the bag running.
Amphibia was the one show in years that I connected to so fast in it's first season. It was funny, entertaining, and I just always smiled while watching it. I never had an issue for me at least when it came to what some called filler episodes. Because they all did seem to come around and actually follow up at least in a cause and effect manner towards later episodes. Like her always helping townies which lead to them throwing her a party in the pre finale and just how character interactions and stuff really matter in the show. I just really loved how season one was able to draw me in when it came to cartoons I've watched in a while Season 2 was just WAY too much fun and I absolutely love and adore it so much. So many emotions and so much revealing things that went down. Hopping mall lives in my head rent free. That finale was just... man that was something else. Actually had me surprised and shocked. Season 3. It was cool, not as hit as Season 2 but I'm at least glad that ending was good.
I was sobbing during the ending scene with Anne and Sprig. I've had to let go of my everything as well. The goodbyes were done perfectly. This show reminded me that I can always treasure the memories I have even though I've had to move on. Spranne against the world!
@@DrawciaGleam02 Yes he did. And personally Sasha Elizabeth Waybright is my favorite character in the series second to Marcy Wu, Anne’s great as well but the other two girls just have more interesting stories that I wanted to see explored more especially Marcy.
Amphibia is one of the best cartoon series I’ve seen in a while, I’m just so glad that we have it. Thank you for bringing it up. I feel like a lot of people missed out on it (especially with all the Owl House hype cough cough) But yeah, as a person who dropped it on the first season and continued much later, I agree - first season has problems with its pacing
I just finished it. What an Isekai masterpiece. Now one of my favorite shows ever. Oh yeah, Anne is one of the most well-written and best protags ever. Super likable, and I do like me that grounded character development.
This was incredible, well written, incredibly voice acted. In my honest (right) opinion this was the second if not the best video Mr.Shi ever posted, up there with his more emotion filled (but more "offensive" in the words of Twitter) Videos (Like SVTFOE and decline of Loud House) Along with that, having Cartoonshi actually cover a show he liked from the start is an incredible expirience seeing where, as someone who enjoyed the show from the beggining reacts to the Mediocre and Incredible parts of a show Every time this man uploads I will either lose my shit laughing (i have the humor of a child) or be struck RIGHT in the feels.
Amphibia is a triumph and will be remembered fondly, what a wonderfully amazing, memorable and powerful show. Good job Matt Braly and the Amphibia team for pulling it all off 👏
Bro, just watching the scene of Andrias stabbing Marcy gave me chills and made me tear up. I was stunne for a moment and had to pause the video. Thats how impactful it was, at least to me.
27:21: This scene replays in my mind over, and over again... I mean, so does Marcy falling down the stairs, but that's for an entirely different reason.
This was a genuinely great retrospective! You really do justice on just what I love about Amphibia. One thing I do want to add is that the ending to the Christmas episode gives the detail that Sasha's parents are implied to be divorced which gives more explanation to how she changed compared to when she first met Anne and Marcy
As someone who have seen Amphibia from beginning to end months ago, this video made me appreciate the show more. The core theme and message is something I really adore and I love the implementation of the Thai representation in this show in certain episodes. This comment is a year late, but great job with this retrospective
Man I love this show this along with the owl house,Hilda, primal, and primeval are my favorite shows of all time this is also one of the shows that inspired me to make my own dinosaur series comic and fanfiction I am working on I really hope it is successful like these shows :) Also your video was amazing and amphibia is once again a truly great show. :)
Just want you to know at the 33:00 minute mark I realised, "Oh fuck I need to watch this show" and I went and watched the whole thing before coming back to this video. Brilliant ending, loved it so much. Anyway, for you to immediately say "Mr X overstays his welcome" made me absolutely howl with laughter. It was really a punch to my Queer-Coded-Villain-loving gut, he is just so fun for me in such a silly way but at the same time I can totally see how what I find endearing others could find grating. Cheers for bringing this show to my attention.
if i had a nickle for every time Keith David voice a villain in a Disney production involving frogs, id have 2 nickels. which isn't a lot but its weird that it happened twice
This show has fr altered the way my brain functions. Say what you will about the execution of the plot Amphibia's characters and their arcs are written so wonderfully that its hard not to feel deeply connected to them. I don't usually cry for movies/tv shows unless the dog dies,, but amphibia is the big exception the hardest thing had me sobbing-
When I first saw Owl House and Amphibia I first moved to The Owl House as I'm a sucker for subverting fantasy tropes in an odd way. After the Owl House went on hiatus I watched some of Amphibia and it definitely had its charm and watched it from time to time. By Season 2 I had a general understanding of Amphibia and its story and this is where I fell in love with Amphibia. I saw so much of myself in Anne and Marcy and it went into directions that made my question myself. I personally found Season 3a pretty good as it pushed how things have changed between Anne and her parents which is something we really don't get too often so I quite enjoyed it.
Same. I could really relate to Anne and Marcy as well. This is one of the things that really drew me in. The characters could have been us. And I really loved the way Anne's parents were portrayed.
honestly when i first saw amphibia, i was bored at the start, but as i kept watching this show i saw myself being wanting more and more from it, the story was simply amazing, and at some point i missed the episodes where you could just watch those silly frogs live their lives with anne. When i watched some episodes again after finishing the show, i noticed a LOT of details that i never realized that were there, like anne's eyes glowing blue at the very first episode. But my favorite thing about this show was surely the end, because they didnt try to make the impossible like in star vs evil, it was a sad, but obvious ending, you cant expect that they will be together forever or that two worlds can simply merge together, at some point she would have to let go, and that was something i rarely see in cartoons like that.
Amphibia is a good show and definently has great parts which if anything I wanted more of but my biggest problem is that the plots of many episodes are waaaayyy on the nose and beat you over the head with what it wants to tell or teach the viewer
It’s really funny how amphibias biggest problem in season 3 is how slow the pacing is where as the owl houses pacing is way too fast but both still result in great episodes.
I don't want to be too emotional nor personal there but my biggest dream is to create a great animated show... And these positive feedbacks from these shows (kinda like my style) from you some time to time makes me so hopeful ! But your critic videos too are good because I can relate to some tropes I would probably do in these stories... So thank you for making good content !
Man, I haven't watched this show since it ended, and watching this video brought back a lot of great memories, and even opened some more insight about the show to me.
Watched the show several times. I love it so much. Just watched a few clips here on Yyoutube. Had me cryingg like a little baby. This show is just amazing!
Ayyy I heard Sam and Max music in the background. Glad you're also a man of culture. A cool fun fact is that Hop Pop has the same voice actor as Sam in the video game Hit the Road. Maybe for a future video you could talk about something Sam and Max related? Like the video games or TV show. Also great retrospective. Imo the ending didn't feel like a big climax as most show finales are, but it did stick with me, especially with how Anne had to say goodbye to the Planters and Amphibia. It was good closure.. Also stan bi Sasha.
I love amphibia so much. It does so much other shows cant, IN JUST 3 SEASONS. However as much as I love it season 3 B lost me when i first watched it. I felt it could've been like a season that kept on moving the plot while telling us information of spring's parents, but its still a great show. ♡
While I love and appreciate both, I always personally preferred Amphibia over The Owl House. I just find the character interpersonal relationships to be far better and layered.
Best Disney animated series with not that many bad episodes. In fact, I can't even think one bad episode. Hope Matt does another series on par to this in the future. He's one the best creators out there.
