I replace them once a year when the pins get bent or ground down. If your flats are getting slippery and losing traction, it might be time for new pedals, shoes, or both.

That's funny I just ordered a set of the cheap Fookers (what a name, is that what they do to an Englishmans shin?) and a sack of pedal washers from Amazon. I remember Tess mentioning those pedals in her Orbea Laufey unboxing video, I didn't notice that you had also posted a link to them. Anyway, I can't wait to try them on the narrow boards. Should add an element of excitement to the ride...

As a 50 year old who loves flats clippless had their time and place. Like on a Friday night back in the 90's riding toasted and just falling over at stop sign. That was great.

Another benefit of flats... you can easily move and reposition foot for different situations. When I ride flats and I'm riding the ascent, I'll put the spindle just in front of the ball of my feet. This allows me to better utilise toes down for climbing and maximise my climbing ability. Then when I'm traversing/descending, I can move spindle rearward - so foot position is secure. The above is the biggest drawback imho of riding clipless. You can't shift the position of the foot to better suit the different situations out on the trail. I ride flats and clipless. Majority of my rides are clipless b/c I feel my skill set is good enough for my local trails... that I want the efficiency benefits of being clipped in. Conversely, if I'm riding unfamiliar, really technical trails (for me, I prefer technical) I'll shift back to flats (some of the time). Other times I'll just change things up b/c the wind has shifted and I wanna ride the other for a bit. Last one.... when I ride my AM HT (Nukeproof Scout 290), flat pedals become part of the dampening system i.e. think braking bumps or large section of roots. Flats whilst on my HT will remove some of the jarring coming through my feet.

Yes, Yes, Yes! Great info. I switched from clipless to flats in November and here's why. Most of my painful crashes occur when I am climbing low speed tech. The last painful crash on clipless hurt so bad that I was afraid I broke my leg. Then Keff Kendall Weed broke his pelvis for the second or third time and he switched to flats. At the same time a friend crashed and blew his knee out because he was attached to his bike. It was a bit of a challenge and I agree with you about changing your techniques for pumping, jumping, and turns. Now I have no fear when it comes to uphill tech since I can pop right off the bike. And I like cornering better too. The Chester's seem to support my foot better than my xt and egg beater clipless.

Very well said! I completely agree with your experience in riding flats. I only ride clipless for my road bike. I will have to try the spindle behind balls of feet technique though, I currently ride with the spindle only slightly behind so I will try changing my foot position. Great video!

Another very worthwhile to listen to Vid! After 15 years of clipped riding I wanted to be better at MTB skills so I switched for a while to flats for a year. I was able during that year to enhance my skills by being able to more safely try things and push my limits more. Now I ride both..... 70% Clipped as I do like riding long on my Chromag....

Another solid video. I grew up on BMX and moto and you’d never dream of clipless on either. For some reason I went clipless when I started mtb. It does feel secure but I also feel a lot of what you’re talking about with riding “light” and holding back a little. I’m also convinced clipless contributed to my fibula spiral fracture in February when I washed out into a side hill and my foot wouldn’t release. Fully recovered now and still riding clipless 🤦🏻‍♂️. Think I’m going to take the plunge soon.

I had got my flat shoes completely soaked in the rain a couple weeks ago, so switched to clipless on my next ride and kept them for a couple weeks. Noticed your comment on cornering with flats in your previous video and switched back to flats today since my shoes were dry and wanted to see if I could notice a difference. They felt so much better on the corners and I road faster. Not quite sure what the difference was, but it was definitely noticeable.

Hey Steve, I also ride both clips and flats, I like the One up components aluminum flats because they have long pins that grip really well and for clips I like the Crank Brother’s candy 1 super light and they now make three different cleats so you can customize your float and release.

I ride clipless on my gravel bike and you are absolutely right in that it’s not confidence inspiring when wanting to try new things. Anytime I want to practice bike handling or try something different I always find myself putting the flat pedals back on. For my normal rides where I just want to get some good cardio in and go for endurance I still use my clipless pedals.

I've never felt natural with clipless pedals no matter the use. When I started using flatties again I instantly just felt free. It was the most obvious thing to me. I've run the OneUp aluminum pedals for a long time and I love them. The other thing I love is that a full rebuild takes 5 minutes, and a rebuild kit is fairly inexpensive. I'm so glad you don't need special tools and nothing to adjust and so on. You just swop out the parts, regrease it and put them back together. I've had no issues with these so quite frankly they just work.

I agree 100%. For me it was on very techie uphills with tight switchbacks that made me ditch the clippless

great video. I ride flats 90% of the time. The only time I don't like riding flats is in steep, uphill rocky tech here in New England. I tend to get bounced off at times. That being said, I still prefer flats. Especially for manuals & wheelies!

Flat pedals are what we used as a kid. Cycling as an adult is mostly about feeling like a kid! It feels free.

I also ride both pedals depending on my mood. I've been riding flats more recently, just for a change of pace. I do have good shoes - Five Ten Impacts, both low and mid-top versions.

Wow. I ride both, but can descend and turn way better in flats. I too find I can get lower and looser in turns. I still ride clips when trying to keep up with faster riders on XC trails, but always switch back to flats when I’m just having fun. Thanks for your great content!!

I'm glad to see that I'm doing something right that's exactly how I ride with the spindle just in back of the ball of my foot I have size 12 feet and even using my Chester's works fine for me plus I have wide chainstays I had to use pedal washers so my ankles wouldn't hit the chain stays but now it's perfect

That's great to hear. I have a lot of people comment how Chester's are "too small" for their big feet, but I feel like proper pedal position would really help them. Thanks for posting this.

Good stuff, but I personally have no option but clipless as nerve damage in my foot requires clipless to keep my foot on the pedal. To get a faster release, I run the Shimano multi-release cleats and they have been fantastic! I'd recommend die hard clipless users who want immediate bail out without the usual heel twist to consider those.

Love my MacAskills as well! They need a little shoe goo but still have some life left. Don't know what I will replace them with yet, maybe I will try the new Leatt shoes. Great stuff Steve!

Coming from a 35 year BMX background I cant even think of using clipless pedals. I even some times have like modern looking but composite shimano DX style pedals on my bike by odyssey. Unless you are like a pro racer most studies ive actually seen show watts lost are basically nill for the average person...

I ride clipless in my road bike and flats on my mountain bike. I will NEVER ride clipless in my MB. I am no pro nor a very experienced technical rider but i really appreciate the freedom of movement i get in the flats. I want to be able to change the position and pressure i can give depending of the terrain and the obstacles. And obviously... I am quicker taking my feet to the ground when trying to avoid a crash.

Hey. I know this is an old video so I’m not sure if you’ll see this comment. I haven’t seen a video from you comparing various flat pedals. For example smaller vs larger platforms or concave vs flat or even various materials. Think it’d make for a good comparison. I love my smaller stamp 1 pedals but there are so many options out there. Probably enough to confuse a lot of people.

I do more XC type riding, so it's clipless for me. I've been riding clipless for nearly 15 years and I definitely feel more secure and connected to the bike, however if I was doing more gnarly trail riding, I'd go for flats for when I need to ditch the bike in a hurry

I'm converting back to flats but still ride both. For some reason when I ride flats, my knees hurt. My seat post seems the right height. I think my footing is not straight, where as in clip less my feet are always in the right position. One thing I hate about clip less is clipping in when I start my descent from a stop at the top of a climb. I often find myself riding into chunk without being able to clip in my second foot and this sometimes would do half or full descent with only one foot clipped.

I keep thinking about going back to flat pedals. On techy trails I feel less confident I can foot plant in case I'm about to tumble over. That happened once and I tore my labrum in my left shoulder. What keeps me clipped in is how much better I can climb on long inclines compared to flat. Definitely need to figure out what's more important to me, confidence or efficiency.

Both have their merits. That's why I ride both. I recently injured myself trying to dismount a techy climb in clips.

Thannks for vid on 90’a styling MTB. I have rode clipless for a long time but I purchased a new bike, FS and also got some Chester Flats and love them. But can’t afford the right shoes. 5-10’s are very expensive

Been on flats for a few years and just used cheap shoes. They "worked" fine. I got a pair of 5 10 shoes and a huge difference. Shoes "stick" to the flats very well. More confidence with them.

Washers space your pedals out ever so slightly. Some cranks require washers, but most don't.

I like concepts becouse there not as tacky as some others ,my foot never slips but i can move my foot easily. flat pedals make you work on your suspension tune more.

Vulcanized skate shoes! If you've ridden 5-10s, and want more pedal feel, try vulcanized skate shoes. Might not be comfortable for heavier riders... but I don't think I'll ever go back to 5-10's after switching to my vulc's. (I weigh 180 lbs). Even riding heavy rock gardens on double black trails, I continue to grab my vulc's when I ride. Stiff shoes feel like I'm putting a blindfold on my feet.

@@hardtailparty currently I'm using Emericas, and I like them. The styling of "vulcanized" refers to a more flexible bottom skate shoe, so just find a brand that has a good pattern for pedal pins! I've done 4,000 feet elevation gain days in them with no foot fatigue. I can see heavier riders having issues with them, though.

I have a question about "dropping your heals" when descending. My heels are so flexible that I pretty much have the spindle of the peddle right before my ankle otherwise my heel drops so much that I can slip of the pins on my 5-10 shoes. When you drop your heal, are you supposed to still use some of your calf muscle, or drop the heal so that it doesn't use any calf muscle?

I don't always drop my heels when I descend. I often drop my toes. It depends on the situation. Body position should be dynamic and always moving from one position to the next. We shouldn't ever just hold one position static. I try to position my knee so it's directly over the pedal spindle. Sometimes that requires dipping my toes, other times it requires dipping me heels. I never just dip my heels for an extended period of time on descents.

Gotta get a good shoe/pedal combo just like clipless. FiveTens with some chesters. It feels like you're attached to your flats. I even fell over once because I couldn't get my feet off.

Shame five-ten discontinued support for a lot of countries since being bought by Adidas. No way I'm buying a brand of shoe I don't know from overseas, and dealing with sizing issues and international returns. I picked up some Race Concepts and they seem pretty good, could be stickier but much better than the random shoes I was running before.

Hey Steve why do you recommend a MTB specific brand shoes i.e (Five Ten, Ride Concepts, Giro etc...)over a Skateboard or even a Nike running shoe that is sticky? Just curious if its just a fashion/MTB culture thing or do MTB specific shoes provide better support, grip that perform better than those I mentioned. Am i wrong that when it comes to comparing flats to clips is like comparing apples to oranges, and not in the aspect of performances but i am assuming that if i was gonna ride clips, that all the shoes ride pretty much the same and that in purchasing a pair, it would basically be based on looks. Been wanting to order some Five Tens but just curious if the juice is worth the squeeze. Thanks

It's not fashion, I do nothing for fashion. Haha. The shoes I mention truly have a significant performance advantage. No, not all clip shoes ride the same. See my video about why i love clips. The juice is worth the squeeze, provided you get the right ones. My video of why I love flats lists the models I recommend. I'd stay far away from giro, bontrager, and pearl izumi flat shoes, they're awful. Get the five ten models i mentioned.

Sure, if you're hitting your shins a lot more than shin guards, I recommend stocky fiveten shoes. I also recommend ryan leech's free flat pedals course. Link in my description.

Yes, I've tried them. I have small feet, so there's not a huge advantage for me, but I have friends who love them.

I talk about it in this video. They're sleuths. They feel planted, but they're not sticky so my feet slip off the pedals.

@@A.Akbar1983 that makes sense! Sorry about that. The sleuth dlx has the sticky rubber sole, but the regular sleuth doesn't. Im not really interested in the sleuth dlx either because they're so narrow and long (but that might be good for people with narrow feet)

Not yet. The closest I've come is about 70 feet, and I can't do them consistently yet. For this reason, a few of my bikes still have flat pedals and others have clips.

There is no way I would consider clips. I avoid a head on collision at about 20mph have to Indo up a hill and dumping my feet.

If you distance ride into far places and you wreck our your bike breaks down to where you can't ride it back will they hike out well? You forgot if you do slip out of them they will swing around and give the back of your leg a kiss. New mountain bike slang pedal kisses.
