Why I Love The Ibanez SRH500F

I LOVE this bass and the road to finding it was long and confusing so I thought I'd share it all with you in hopes that it helps you decide to buy it - or not.
Strings:
Ibanez: D’Addario Black Nylon strings.
Washburn: LaBella Deep Talking Black Nylon Tape Wound regular gauge strings.
The path is cable - MOTU 828x - Digital Performer 10. Zero EQ or compression or limiting.
*If you use EQ with this bass you can get a MUCH deeper sound, plus if you boost around 700 or 800 Hz on fretless bass, you get more growl. The 300 Hz range is also nice. There are many videos online showing how good this bass can sound through an amp. I wanted to do something different.
I've got some more bass videos coming so please do subscribe.

When I record with mine, i use an amp and mic it with a figure-8 ribbon mic about 3 feet away. I sit near the back of the mic to get string and fretboard sound. Also i have black nylon strings, foam near the bridge and play over the fretboard. It sounds REALLY close to an upright that way. I mean, REALLY close. And recording jazz with it, in the mix, MOST people would never question it.

Hey! Those are all awesome ideas!! You should do a video on it! And if you used a separate mic for the string noise you could control the volumes separately. Thanks for sharing!!

I have been in and out of quite a few basses over the years. I prefer Jazz basses, and wanted something to replace the upright I had sold. All the different basses I tried and this one won hands down (Jan. 2019). When EQ'd the right way and plucked the right way it's hard to tell them apart! I agree also, the neck is simply fantastic. It's so easy to get up near the body and stay in tune and not get lost. It is a super fast neck also. Thanks for taking the time to do a great review!

Wow Stewart! Glad you liked my take on it. We seem to think the exactly same way about it. My review was no EQ at all, so yeah, people can perhaps imagine (or check out other reviews) that when EQed it sounds fantastic. I think I still like my Washburn AB20 a little better but when I compare them, the Ibanez holds up which is amazing for such a small thin body. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to communicate! Peace!

Excellent demonstration! I have owned one for over 3 years and I love playing it. I also put nylon wrapped strings on. To get a more upright sound I use a Zoom AC-2 Acoustic preamp before the amplifier. While no small electric bass can ever match an upright, when playing with a jazz band this makes a fairly good approximation

the best acoustic preamp/simulator is the old Boss AD-3. I am serious: The new AC-series sucks, and even the "better" and much more expensive AD-5. AD-8 and AD-10 did not reach the "acoustic" feeling of the AD-3. I tried them all, and in the end I bought my AD-3 back over ebay.

For a while I've been curious about this bass. I'm not exactly a jazz bassist, I'm more on the fuzzy psych rock side of things, but I'm curious to know if this would fit decently well in a less acoustic environment. Especially if I were to roundwounds on - likely TI Jazz Rounds. Do you think it could pull off a more 'electric' tone if I set it up correctly?
@brentinjapan
@brentinjapan Год назад
I think for rock, psych rock, and with round wound strings, you're better off going for the SRF 700 (which is an awesome bass), but this bass would also work. I'd just worry that at high volumes it might feed back unless you block the sound hole.

Thanks for watching. The A4 is a better made bass. It better be for the price tag, right? I only listened to sound samples online and I personally liked this Ibanez better so it’s just a matter of taste. My opinion may be the minority because those Godin are more popular I think. If this Ibanez were as expensive as the A4 I’d still prefer the Ibanez. One of the beauties of music is different flavors.

@brentinjapan 2 года назад
Hey! Glad you're enjoying fretless. It's been a lifelong love/hate relationship for me! My intonation is OK, but if I don't play for a while it gets worse. As for the strings, nylon wound strings have a much "softer" touch. I mean they're a little slinkier. steel strings are harder like wires and don't give so much. Also the nylon has kind of a guy string sound to it. You won't regret putting nylon strings on a(n) (semi) acoustic bass. In my review the volume is cranked up and the treble knob is almost all the way up. I didn't add any other EQ because 1) I wanted to show the completely flat sound because 2) there are already a bunch of videos with this bass played through amps with lots of EQ on them.

May I ask how do I do the intonation? On dots or the unfret lines?
@BrentInClass
@BrentInClass 8 месяцев назад
Yeah! Great question! The dot positioning is the one thing I don't like about this bass. It's a little confusing. If you look closely there are little black lines in the fretboard. Those are for intonation. I guess the dots are to signify where the 3rd, 5th, 7th etc. frets are.

@brentinjapan
@brentinjapan 2 года назад
Sorry, but one of the basses is in a box ready to be sold so I didn’t take it out. Even if I did, they’re different basses so it would be difficult to compare. One thing everyone seems to agree on: the tension is low on the LaBella so they’re floppier. Some people even need to change the action on the bass. I’ve always used LaBella on the Washburn acoustic bass I’ve had for years. If I changed the strings now I’d probably use LaBella again. Why? I think they have a slightly more open sound and they feel a little drier while D’Addario feel a little stickier. Not sticky, but more like electrical wire. Also, I like the low tension: easier to play for me. These might be the exact reasons someone else chooses D’Addario. To each their own.

Could you please explain why people shouldn't use their fingertips?
@brentinjapan
@brentinjapan Год назад
Gladly! The tip of the finger presses the string down hard and definitely so the sound is almost like a fret. (Of course on fretless there is still some mwah. The pad of the finger on the other hand is softer and gives the string more room to vibrate so it’ll create more mwah.
@drewz116
@drewz116 Год назад
@@brentinjapan Thanks for explaining. I was confused because I thought you might've been suggesting that for the purpose of better intonation.
@brentinjapan
@brentinjapan Год назад
@@drewz116 Technically it could make your intonation worse using the pad because there's so much more flesh touching the keyboard, but in the end intonation will be better because it's very easy to make a slight adjustment and to use vibrato when using the pad. Plus it's easier playing across strings because you can bar 2 or more strings at the same time.
@drewz116

It makes absolutely no sense to have an acoustic bass and not miking it. Your old WASHBURN sounds so much better than the IBANEZ. Slap a piezo pick up in any electric bass and you’ll get the same lame plugged in tone. Miking an acoustic bass is the only way to get “that acoustic” sound.
