High quality video, and superb demo song. Very tasteful man! I genuinely enjoy the depth of your explanations and function demos. Thank you 🙏🏼 My super noob question is: are you recording all of the tracks wet with “perfect settings”, or do you have them all dry, and re-track them with the reverb afterwards? Or is there a separate track that only captures the reverb / and you also have all-dry instruments tracks? I’m curious how you track things and fit it all together (with maximum flexibility?)
Thanks so much! Good question, you can do either, but how I like to do it is using the Kill Dry mode I mentioned. All the demo song stuff was tracked like that, so I record the parts dry, send them to the Big Sky that is only outputting reverb, then once I like how it sounds (ie I’ve eq’d the guitar and picked a reverb I like), then I record the reverb only from the big sky into a new stereo track. That’s the most detailed way to do it, so if you want you can always change out or mix the reverb differently. Printing reverb in directly is fine too but I like this way for max control!
Great sounding demo. I really enjoy your content and your demos of the 3rd Wave helped convince me to purchase one (spoiler: I love it!). Just a point of clarification: you mention that one of the IR's is a capture of the Taj Mahal. It is actually an IR capture of the Lexicon 960L...which had a preset called...you guessed it...."Taj Mahal". 👍

Reverb comparison coming ! And thanks man! It would be very hard to pick right now, I probably use the big sky more since it works so well as a workhorse send/return master verb , but I think the creative sound design power of the Meris makes it my slight preference

I will do a reverb comparison this summer, just waiting on the bigger power supply I ordered! Stay tuned! I think they are both amazing sounding, if I had to pick one gun to my head I'd choose Meris (it's my all time fave reverb), but I think the preamps are nicer on the BSMX. If you are using it mostly as a send and return, the Big Sky MX is just a joy to use, its basically a high end rack unit in pedal form and its silly how easy it is to get your verb mixes sitting right. The Meris is like a super deep custom reverb creator and makes just jaw dropping sounds that the BS can't do though, its a sound designers dream.
my only gripe(if that) on the Big Sky MX is i wish they would've used either white or blue lettering on the display screen, instead of the green. it's highly superficial, but i think white or blue would've looked better.
I liked your effect reviews very much and i have the original and always wanted to trade it against a bam or empress. I think its a pitty that you just use this patch with release. Especially the new algos i wish i could hear with different drum sounds. To evaluate the tail. I miss that in your demo. Most reviewers miss that part and you did it so well in your old videos. Do you have no interest in the oto bam? I think it is still the most beautiful reverb.
I know you showed different sound at the beginning but it was a bit short. Algos like room weren't so nice on the original. Ps: I don't know if you know that: You can switch the firmware on your empress reverb. Reverb can be a echosystem and echosystem a reverb. Its on the official website.
do you prefer this/other reverb pedals to vsts? I feel like *some* reverb pedals are inferior studio tools vs plugins, but at the same time, i often find it cumbersome to dial in ITB reverbs and some hardware sounds effortlessly good (e.g reverb on the peak synth). Everyone raves about Valhalla, but you can make it sound REALLY terrible very easily.
Late reply but reverb and delay I almost always prefer pedals if its going to be a main effect. I find it so much easier to dial in sounds with knobs! For VST reverb I usually just use it more subtly as a mix send on something like UAD Capital Chambers or an Impulse Response
@@Gap-td7lr Compared to what? Maybe compared to what you would be willing to pay for a reverb, but if you look at the market the price isn't so strange. There are good reverbs at around 300 like the Meris Mercury 7, the universal audio golden reverberator or the strymon blue sky, but they're not comparable to the big sky mx feature wise. Then if you go up in price to around 500 there's the empress reverb, the original big sky and death by audio Rooms. Those are all gorgeous, but again feature wise it's clear the MX is a step up. The only comparable one to the MX is the Meris Mercury X, which has a similar price. So maybe it's not price gouging, maybe this is just what it costs if you want to make some money in this business. That's not price gouging. It's just expensive gjear. And that's not for everyone, but that's OK.
@@MilesAwayOfficial I prefer Empress for the more transparent sound, which is excelent for recording. I find Strymon to have a very distinctive sound of its own.
@@jumpingman8160 yea that was my old reasoning why I preferred it over the original big sky in a lot of cases, but the MX new algorithms like Chamber I feel really have that transparent realistic sound that I felt the Empress used to do better. So many good options for reverb these days!
Totally fair! VST reverb is great too. What are your favourites? Personally I have yet to find a vst that can go toe to toe with Meris and Strymon's algorithms but I'm always interested
@@MilesAwayOfficial Valhalla suite of tools and Raum from NI, also eventide black hole vst is good to. Adam szabo has a free one called Solaris that is one of best .
@@wesleyforman8391 we have similar taste! I love Raum and Valhalla, will for sure check out Solaris. With that being said I've done some pretty nerdy tests and I will say that Meris, Empress and Strymon have better algorithms than Valhalla/Raum. How much that matters is pretty much up to you though, cause listeners will never care or tell haha.
@@MilesAwayOfficial I understand the argument between software and hardware you can literally use diva and serum and probably get 90% close to everything out there however there's something about just owning hardware and touching knobs and sliders that makes it more inspiring to get started with the track. Like if I buy a piece of hardware that's so expensive I'm going to want to use it and if it doesn't fit my style sure I can resell it maybe at a loss maybe at a profit or break even. However I am not in a position to spend almost as much on a hardware effects than I am on a actual synth. Someone would have to convince me that the hardware for that much money is that much better than the software version of it or competitors. Are you being the big sky VST is $200 and is I lock protected but I've heard it doesn't sound anything like the hardware so I'm not sure.
