I have been looking forward to Victober so much this year. I often find Victorian literature to be comforting -- even though the period and novels were anything but. I think its because though the problems described in the books were quite serious and real they are often problems in which we have seen advances if not solutions. This gives me hope that we can overcome the seemingly intractable problems of today.
@katiejlumsden

Thanks! I find it comforting too - I wonder if it's because I read lots of it as a teenager so I find it nostalgic like other people find their old childhood favourites :)

All your loves for Victorian literature I’m seeing as I read Trollope’s Can You Forgive Her? From other videos I get the impression that, while you love the Victorians, you’re very modern and contemporary in your reading tastes. Keep up the fine work, Katie! Thank you for affirming some of the countless reasons Victorian literature is the BEST. And I'm American, lol. Another huge reason I adore Vic lit is that there is often an underlying positive, spiritual current that counters the rigid religious morals and stereotypes. For example, Thomas Hardy consistently demonstrates a mystic, universal, dare I say yogic?, force that just fills my soul. ❤❤❤ Even dark, gothic lit has some beautiful spiritual insight that transcend the confines of religion, imo. Thank you for your wonderful insight!

I haven't had a chance to pick up a book yet today but this video has me SO excited to get stuck into my TBR! I really enjoy the way some Victorian novels really take their time to get into the plot too, and I don't think I would have realised this if I hadn't read a lot of Victorian literature last October as I don't think I would have picked up on that style without reading a lot at once to see the pattern. I love the writing too and find it very funny, though I am not sure how much of that is intended and how much is reading it through a 21st Century lens but I enjoy it either way! Great video 😊

This will be my first Victober as a Booktuber , I began with "The Star" by H G Wells on audiobook... which seems a rather unVictorian way of accessing it...maybe I should have found it on a wax cylinder or something... "Little Dorritt" is waiting on my shelf for me to finish the wonderful "Dombey and Son". I also hope to read some of the writings of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, even if Dickens was critical of their work (interestingly his daughter Kate Dickens, a painter herself, posed for John Everett Millais on a number of occasions). I need to read Elizabeth Gaskell sometime. Thanks for the inspiration, now I have to go and take Diogenes for a walk...

The 19th century was the century where the novel came into its own, largely driven by rising literacy rates and a growing middleclass who could afford to buy them. Also improved printing and publishing technology I assume helped. You get some of the very first children's books too like Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island and the Jungle Book.

Wells and I'm sure a few others. But the many popular books on booktube I do not think I've read. I think I'm more familiar with American authors of this time period.
